Owner of this particular Z3M Coupé, thanks Mark and Jack for doing the excellent video! As much as I enjoy this car I just don’t fit in it well, so watch for this car on Bring A Trailer in the next few weeks, just waiting for them to finish the listing.
@Collidiscope I'm 6' 2" and I definitely don't fit in the Z3M. I can "drive" it but I definitely don't fit comfortably. I would get a Z4M. I had one of those for a year and a half and it fit me really well.

I'm a big boy... and I fit length wise barely in the z4m, my knees just barely miss the dash , but I have a great amount of head room. its hard getting in and out, but again I'm 325lbs. it was shocking going from any car to the size of Z4m . but if you have driven other small cars , the z4 will feel normal. smaller than toyota 86, almost identical in size as the C7 Corvette, bigger than new supra.
CockatooDude it screams late 90s. Ah maybe because it’s a car from the late 90s? Hilarious how people bag cars for having characteristics that are period correct. That’s a huge part of their appeal - a modern interior in a Z3? LOL!

C Macd I bought it because I loved how it looked. It was purely used for daily driver duties, along with a 98 328 at the time. Both looked near new, the 328 was a far better car to drive everyday which is why I eventually sold the M coupe. Sold the 328 not long ago, to a neighbor. He flipped it for triple the money 😡

holy i was researching this 2days ago and saw this today great help guys. and IMO this looks amazing maybe im weird but i will say the designer of ff and lusso definitely saw this
Dang, I just realized the huge difference in power between the S52 and S54 S52: 240 horsepower S54: 333 horsepower Iirc, the E36 M3 came with the S52 stateside, while having a far more powerful (300+ hp) power-plant elsewhere. Not sure the S54 was available in the E36 like it was in the E46 BMW does make great motors though. I had an E46 330i with the sport package, it was a great car. Those straight 6’s are smooth as butter, and that chassis is very solid with amazing handling characteristics. I can’t imagine how awesome an M3 version would be. I’ve owned 2 C5 Corvettes (99’ frc, 02’ Z06); the performance is similar to those. I can’t even begin to wonder how bad ass it would be having that much fun in a sedan (also had a CLS63 AMG w/ over 500hp; it was crazy powerful but not that fun in the twisties) Also had a 745i and X5, both with the 4.4L V-8. Absolutely loved the power delivery, but man were they unreliable messes. The X5 had >$60,000 in work done under warranty, including an engine and transmission replacement. The 7-series I got rid of pretty quickly.
I love my 2000 M Coupe! For me, it's the handling that's the star of the Clownshoe. Having driven an E46 M3 and supercharged E36 M3 (more powerful BMWs of the same vintage) along with 911s (993C2S and 996TT) and having also previously owned a 987 Cayman S (the latter having IMHO perfect handling characteristics), all I can say is that while the Coupe might not be as fast, and comparably has objective weaknesses in the handling department, it's precisely these qualities that make it interesting and fun to drive. It just doesn't feel like anything else. Stiffness isn't everything! And if you throw in coilovers and other suspension mods, the Coupe is basically as planted as the Cayman while retaining this weird "whip" handling quality that's hard to describe. Maybe it's body roll, maybe it's me about to be launched off the road, but it's intoxicating. I'm also 6'1" and have no real issues in the cabin - it can be a bit tight, but I like that feeling. I've driven it cross-country multiple times, it is a joy to spend time in. The Coupe is, undoubtedly, my forever car.
Glad they discuss the huge issue on these, which is the rear subframe failure. There's kits out there to fix it, but even the torque of the S52 was to much for the welds in the back of the car. BMW cut corners on reinforcement for the M models. People should look for this when shopping these.
@@maxheadroom224 ah I stand corrected, I only heard VANOS. Good on them. Its a serious issue... should have showed it while under the rear. Fixed comment.
Jesse Olsen - it was the reason we sold our 02 after eight years... just didn't want to be moving into "classic" ownership with potential frame issues.
I have to say this channel has ruined my ability to watch a fair number of other car review channels... The level of production is fantastic, both Jack and what's his name are great, the depth of knowledge AND critique are well above many other channels. You guys have a "voice", and this is a big differentiator. Well done!
You guys say it hasn't aged well, but has anyone since come up with a legit compact sports car with this level of daily drivable ergonomics? Like I daily a 6th gen Camaro but have no in-unit laundry and one parking spot that can barely fit a Yaris. I get that it's usually people on the used market but given how many riced out G35s I see every day on the road here (literally like 25 Infiniti coupes to every one Z car, there has to be some place in the industry for more practical takes on sports cars.
Nice car @J pic. Thanks for sharing it with all of us through Savagegeese, my favorite youtube car reviewers (yes, I like you too Throttle House!). Good luck on selling your car
I usually don’t like BMWs but I’ll be honest, this is one of the few BMW cars I’d buy. Z3M Hatch. E39 M5 E39 M5 is a sleeper if you don’t know anything about cars and the Z3M is so different you wouldn’t know what it is and when you did find out, you’d call it ugly. It’s quirky and ugly but cool at the same time due to the rarity of it.
Good taste in cars, I currently own both of them and reviews on my actual cars are here if you are interested ua-cam.com/video/SwVNPcWB2Z0/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/JdcaS_PGH2E/v-deo.html
Have a Z4MC now, and previously an E39 M5. That M5 is an astonishing car. Arguably the best sedan ever made. The Z4MC is totally different. Raw, unrefined in comparison, and far better connected. Totally different goals superbly met by both. Wish I still had the M5, but it was looking like an engine rebuild within the next couple of years. Replaced with a 911 996 Carrera 2 manual, which shares space with the Z4. Almost identical performance, totally different cars. My channel has videos of both.
Great video as always! This car is really unique and I've always loved it. They are quite rare and worth a lot now as well. If you guys are trying to do a few more older cars, have a look at maybe a 2007 or 2008 350z MT either a nismo (the engineering for these nismos was much different), or a roadster is also super fun in a manual for those two years. Cheers!
I traded a newer C63 AMG for a '99 M Coupe, and I don't regret it. It is a great driving experience, and the styling while strange invites a lot of random discussion.
Buy a 2001-2002 with the S54 engine from the E46 M3. It is one of the most fun cars to drive and also a great investment. It appreciated about 50 percent since I purchased it
Ah the Z3... I bought an e39 M5 and included was a weekend performance overview at the Spartanburg delivery center. The Z3’s, roadster and coupe, were there for us to explore, thrash, etc. I took the coupe to The Biltmore In Asheville from the BMW Zentrum and had a blast! While the US models were detuned, and probably needed the Euro spec setup to really shine, it was still light enough to really nail the twisties. What I remember most about this coupe was the strength of the structure. Solid, vault like, while a little claustrophobic. It was just a hoot to drive in the corners. Thanks for the throwback!
Please do more 80s, 90s and 2000s cars. The breed of cars from that era, the engineering, the design, the simplicity and the driving need to be highlighted more.
I drive one in Germany - actually a 3.0 with mostly M suspension parts - since 10 years and 90.000 km and I do not agree with several things: - I don´t know what this miata thing is in the US, but this is just something different in most ways. - seating position: It is NOT very much possibilities! NO steering adjustment. Seat rear only very limited. - It is not a short coming we will fit this engine product! You can expect that BMW had in its mind always an M version since E30 generation. - cheap development: M is always a "cheap" Version - IF you want to call it like this. Better engine and better suspension - that is what M is about (+some interior stuff) - yes it is soft and has a lot of travel - like ALL 90ies developed cars. - long gears:? I am not aware of a different gearbox for the US. Mine is: 55 km/h in 1. @6700RUM, 100km/h in 2 @ 6700 RPM and 244 km/h in 5. @ 6700 RPM, all tested with GPS 3500 RPM is 70 mph/120 km/h - I would say this is very high geared! -BUT is has character, beginning from the design to the way you sit in this car with extremely limited space in the front! - Your hand falls automatically on the gear stick - which is excellent! Never had anything close incl modern cars and 2019 Miata Coupe or 2008 JCW Mini that I had (awful gearbox) - Engine sounds great w/o exhaust terror like my 2008 JCW Mini e.g. - it turns great with a more sporty suspension - seating just in front of the rear tires is fun It is NOT all great an it revs like crazy! what you can see in mph. But the punch you get is just good for its league. My direct comparison to my 2008 JCW: 210 HP/ 1180 kg vs 231 HP/ 1350 - I "feel" waaaay more accelerated and thrilled by my Z3QP that the JCW - though they are probably even fast. Especially on Autobahn between 120 km/h and 200 km/h the Z3 feels faster. 70 to 130 mph. It is about the connection to the street. btw: I fitted an tent, a sleeping bag, cooker, cooling box, chair inside to a trip inkl. Subwoofer - all below the window area.
I am a fan of these old M cars. They drive well and sound great 👍. Of course they’re going up in value as these kinds of BMW cars are out the window. Oh and there is nothing like an inline 6 induction sound. (: Thank you for sharing this review.
I personally have always liked how the Z3M coupe looked, especially the later S54-powered version. It's one of the purest forms a "driver's car" can take. - It's only as big as it needs to be - It's not terribly heavy - it's RWD manual with an NA straight-6 - It's on a chassis lauded for its handling characteristics and personality - It's just the right combination of analog and digital, trending toward analog - It has a bit of cargo space if one absolutely MUST have that - It's all-weather capable without having to be concerned with a fabric top or a mechanism that will leak - It (probably) has better aero than the convertible version and is more rigid - It's not crazy expensive to operate (relatively speaking) It's looks are perhaps its weakest trait, but as looks go, it's hardly terrible IMO.
I prefer my S2000 over my M Coupe on the track. The M Coupe is a fun car just to cruise around in and have people stop you to conversate, something that never happens in the S2000. Good video and glad to see the schuh on review.
I saw one of these today for the first tine ever in MA. It was in immaculate condition. Very unqiue body shape. Definitely could be a fun car & but you have to own it.

I don't like how this thing looks, but I can't bring myself to hate it's weirdness either
find one out in the wild and see it in person...they look cool as shit but don't photograph well.
its the 4 wheeled version of the band camp/sonic kid. wonderfully weird and interesting. pretty much impossible to hate, but easy to casually oppose
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this is a masterpiece. Only sheep wouldn’t like the styling, Princess you probably drive a SUV
@@anthonygillesse7242 Nah SUVs are such a fuckin eye sore, I drive a '99 Prelude
Back when BMW still made BMWs
holy i was researching this 2days ago and saw this today great help guys. and IMO this looks amazing maybe im weird but i will say the designer of ff and lusso definitely saw this
You deserve way more subscribers! The quality is always top notch and the humor gets me ever time XD. Keep up the good work Mark and Jack :D
In your description it says it’s a 2002 model year But it clearly isn’t because the 2002 had an s54
I drove a few S52 prior to buying an S54. At least for me the S54 made the S52 look like a lump.
Right, but in the 'video' he clearly states in a 2000. I saw the description. You're right.
Dang, I just realized the huge difference in power between the S52 and S54
S52: 240 horsepower
S54: 333 horsepower
Iirc, the E36 M3 came with the S52 stateside, while having a far more powerful (300+ hp) power-plant elsewhere. Not sure the S54 was available in the E36 like it was in the E46
BMW does make great motors though. I can’t even begin to wonder how bad ass it would be having that much fun in a sedan (also had a CLS63 AMG w/ over 500hp; it was crazy powerful but not that fun in the twisties)
Also had a 745i and X5, both with the 4.4L V-8. Absolutely loved the power delivery, but man were they unreliable messes. The X5 had >$60,000 in work done under warranty, including an engine and transmission replacement. The 7-series I got rid of pretty quickly.
@@blauschuh at least s52 doesn't need rod bearings as a maintenance item haha
@@will21 I'll take my chances with the real M motor... I get oil analysis done every 10k miles, no issues so far.
I love it. It looks like a small, 2-door E39 Touring from a rear 3/4 angle, which I love, and the front isn't bad either.
Glad they discuss the huge issue on these, which is the rear subframe failure. There's kits out there to fix it, but even the torque of the S52 was to much for the welds in the back of the car. BMW cut corners on reinforcement for the M models. People should look for this when shopping these.
9:30 - I think he discussed it
@@maxheadroom224 ah I stand corrected, I only heard VANOS. Good on them. Its a serious issue... should have showed it while under the rear. Fixed comment.
@@jesseolsen6456 No worries, I'm sure any BMW geek willing to buy a clownshoe would find out well before purchasing one.
Jesse Olsen - it was the reason we sold our 02 after eight years... just didn't want to be moving into "classic" ownership with potential frame issues.
Love these reviews of older stuff. Especially seeing how far chassis and mechanical development have come in 20-30years.
The rear suspension was based on the E30, so was already 20yrs old in design when new.
One of my favorite cars of all time. Capable and almost practical!
I have to say this channel has ruined my ability to watch a fair number of other car review channels... The level of production is fantastic, both Jack and what's his name are great, the depth of knowledge AND critique are well above many other channels. You guys have a "voice", and this is a big differentiator. Well done!
These were made here an hour away from me in Spartanburg South Carolina and I couldn’t be more proud
Z3M Hatch.
E39 M5
E39 M5 is a sleeper if you don’t know anything about cars and the Z3M is so different you wouldn’t know what it is and when you did find out, you’d call it ugly.
I remember the first video you did on this channel, and I must say you have come a long way Jack!
I love this review - thanks for showing these cars the love they deserve
Great video as always! This car is really unique and I've always loved it. They are quite rare and worth a lot now as well.
If you guys are trying to do a few more older cars, have a look at maybe a 2007 or 2008 350z MT either a nismo (the engineering for these nismos was much different), or a roadster is also super fun in a manual for those two years. Cheers!
Very lucky to have had a coworker with one and got to get behind the wheel of a few times, the only BMW I've ever REALLY enjoyed driving
Someone at my gym had a silver one. It was wierd in the best way possible. Very unique looking
This version was sometimes nicknamed the "Bread Van" - you sure could carry a lot of streusel to Düsseldorf.
I've also heard them called the Smurf Hearse. My '00 is the twin of the one in the vid - with a few more miles.
That name belongs to the Lotus Europa S1!
Can't sell me on the exterior but that's a damn good interior
I really admire the effort, great vid man!
I traded a newer C63 AMG for a '99 M Coupe, and I don't regret it. It is a great driving experience, and the styling while strange invites a lot of random discussion.
I love when you guys do a 90's and early 2000 vehicles. In my opinion they are the best of reliability and drivability.
Probably my favorite car. BMW hatchback at its finest (and last true one)
This video is beautifully crafted! Simply superb!
S54 in Estoril blue is the holy grail.
That Z3M is in remarkable condition. Very clean and well taken care of. Amazing. #Hatchlyfe
Thanks!
Great way to start Monday.
Damn! This is gold! Was really waiting on you guys to review an M coupe one day!
Buy a 2001-2002 with the S54 engine from the E46 M3. It is one of the most fun cars to drive and also a great investment. It appreciated about 50 percent since I purchased it
And will continue to do so. Definitely the one to have! If you can find one...
you guys are nuts! these cars look incredible, especially in person.
That intro.... to another level.
God. Such a good looking car. I will own one one day
Finally they reviewed the sneaker! Thank Jesus!
Favourite UA-camr and favourite BMW... Am i in heaven?
Thanks for the throwback!
personally I love the look of the Z3M Coupe
I like how Jack kind of steered the conversation at 12:10, it felt very natural and unscripted. Good stuff.
Please do more 80s, 90s and 2000s cars. The breed of cars from that era, the engineering, the design, the simplicity and the driving need to be highlighted more.
Mark keeping it real, "No, it hasn't aged well." hahaha!
@Rod Redney He hasn't been wronger. Shooting brake body styles are timeless, and that has a lot to do with their rarity.
I drive one in Germany - actually a 3.0 with mostly M suspension parts - since 10 years and 90.000 km and I do not agree with several things:
- I don´t know what this miata thing is in the US, but this is just something different in most ways.
Better engine and better suspension - that is what M is about (+some interior stuff)
- yes it is soft and has a lot of travel - like ALL 90ies developed cars.
Never had anything close incl modern cars and 2019 Miata Coupe or 2008 JCW Mini that I had (awful gearbox)
- Engine sounds great w/o exhaust terror like my 2008 JCW Mini e.g.
- it turns great with a more sporty suspension
- seating just in front of the rear tires is fun
It is NOT all great an it revs like crazy! what you can see in mph.
Miata = MX-5
@@fortheloveofnoise MX5 RF = Coupé
I am a fan of these old M cars. They drive well and sound great 👍. Of course they’re going up in value as these kinds of BMW cars are out the window. Oh and there is nothing like an inline 6 induction sound. (:
Thank you for sharing this review.
This is one of my favorite cars. I know it has faults, but this really is something I put on a pedestal. I'd love to own one ❤️
I smell E46 M3 coming real soon.
I personally have always liked how the Z3M coupe looked, especially the later S54-powered version. It's one of the purest forms a "driver's car" can take.
- It's only as big as it needs to be
- It's not terribly heavy
- it's RWD manual with an NA straight-6
- It's on a chassis lauded for its handling characteristics and personality
- It's just the right combination of analog and digital, trending toward analog
- It has a bit of cargo space if one absolutely MUST have that
- It's all-weather capable without having to be concerned with a fabric top or a mechanism that will leak
- It (probably) has better aero than the convertible version and is more rigid
- It's not crazy expensive to operate (relatively speaking)
It's looks are perhaps its weakest trait, but as looks go, it's hardly terrible IMO.
I prefer my S2000 over my M Coupe on the track. The M Coupe is a fun car just to cruise around in and have people stop you to conversate, something that never happens in the S2000. Good video and glad to see the schuh on review.
omg! what a vintage car, always wanted to have one for years... now i am in my AMG A45S 4Matic + !!!
I saw one of these today for the first tine ever in MA. It was in immaculate condition. Very unqiue body shape. Definitely could be a fun car & but you have to own it.
One hell of a car. I’m not a fan of BMW, but this is one of the few exceptions
Nice to see Turbowski contribute to the vocals of the intro song.
I have no idea how anything thinks this is ugly. I love it.
Great video and review
Top notch as usual
Love these cars
The low key humour on this channel is second to none.
Hoovie drives his around for months and refuses to acknowledge its existence. I'll just watch it here.
Damn you tyler
He don't want to admit that BMW made functional cars.
He's cooking something up. I think we'll all be in for some sort of surprise when it's finally revealed. I know, I'm getting impatient myself.
Despite it's faults, I love it! I LIKE it's strangeness! It's different! Always wanted one.
Your intros are phenomenal
That's an aftermarket ZHP shifter.
Massive improvement.
Luv and Peace.
That s2000 in the background is stealing the thunder.
Beauty is subjective. Most of my friends think he's an eyesore, but I consider Jack to be beautiful. In consequence, it's a shame that he thinks this car is ugly, because I find it amazingly appealing. I would ride either, anytime and in a heartbeat.
