THE HISTORY OF THE VAUXHALL VX220 | On Board

- A detailed and up to date history of the Vauxhall VX220/Opel Speedster.
Taking you right the way through from the reason why the car was made and its coded project brief, to it's turbo charged successor and legacy.
PLEASE NOTE. In order to keep the video simple to follow I have told this story as "the story of the Vauxhall VX220" as opposed to continually mentioning the car as a General Motors, multi-brand project. I hope this makes sense.

Hi Folks, sorry it's been a while since the last video, but there's a good reason for the delay. I'm about to head off on a pretty epic roadtrip in none other than a Vauxhall VX220. I'll be touring Scotland and exploring some of its unknown and impressive automotive heritage. It's taken a while to get it organised as there's loads of activities and stops planned for the trip, so please do stick around to check it out when the first episode arrives in the coming weeks. It'll be worth the wait! Cheers.
Really enjoyed this! I am based in Stirling, Scotland and have had my VX220 for around 3 years now. Great car =)
Thank-you, really glad you enjoyed the video. It really is an awesome car, my brother has owned one for about a year now and it'll be our first time taking the car up to Scotland. I can't wait to get the VX on the Highland roads.
@@AveragetoPoor perfect roads for the VX220 =) The way to Glencoe is beautiful if you get a chance! Enjoy your trip away! Might even see you about!
@@mattmacconnell2490 Great to hear! We are heading to Glencoe on Tuesday in fact, looking forward to the route there. Thanks, keep an eye out for a yellow VX220, it'll be my brother and I.
@@AveragetoPoor best colour!! Mines is yellow and black! Enjoy =)
Here in the Netherlands i know it as the Opel Speedster
They actually made 66 VXR220's. Model 00 went to the Vauxhall museum. I was lucky enough to own the only blue VXR, Number 65 with the reg number N65 VXR. They made 61 red cars, 1 grey, 1 yellow, 1 black and my blue one. The only car I have ever owned that I regretted selling.
True, not many people know this.
You deserve more subs !!!! I will be glad when you have millions of them as I can say I was here from the start good job sir
"It'll cut your eyes if you stare at it too long"
Oh yeah, I'm definitely stealing that one.
Very good background information, would like to add the VX220 won the CAR Magazine sports car category award in 2003/2004, and a happy owner....
Thanks, Joseph. You're quite right, it's amazing the awards and critical acclaim the car had and yet how poorly it still sold.
Best video I've ever seen on youtube. - (Owning a VX220 - Opel speedster since 2005, THIS gives me so much information. Have never expected to see something like this...).
THNX 4 uploading this...
Congratulations !
It 'a real story very well done.
Thank you from Club Opel Speedster Italia.
Gilberto Artuso Thank-you, Gilberto! Really pleased you liked the video.
You have an incredible way of demonstrating and presenting historical pieces, whether automotive or not. Congratulations and good luck with the channel.
Please don't stop making videos, never, your really good eventually you gonna be famous
As an old school, former rock star, yet never made any money, I've always been in the trade. I'm now 43 years old, good lord - you literally embody the alternative side of our passion for cars. I'm fortunate enough to have enjoyed and owned a VXR220, now it's all about my FK2.
Fantastic videos my man, you should be astonishingly proud of your channel.
♥️
Having owned 10 vx220 over the years, these would include N/a turbos and a vxr220 I’ve didn’t realise about the others, thanks for keeping the VX220 alive even though I collect my brand new lotus exige 410 in the morning if it wasn’t for the vx220, I don’t think I would of ever brought a lotus.
Great upload.
Hi Mark, wow that's a whole lot of VX220's you've driven. How does the VXR220 compare to the standard turbo? Is it a hugely different driving experience? It sounds like a super exciting day for you today, congratulations and all the best with the Exige and thank-you for your kind comments!
I'm glad I discovered this channel. Looking forward to watching your content. Keep up the good work.
Really enjoyed watching this - good work!
Great video. Thanks. Love the format. Love the research that has gone in to this.
Great video, really well made and informative. I would suggest getting the best turbo model you can afford and keep hold of it. I think they will be a modern classic
Thank you for the video. I had this car for 9 years, loved it! After seeing this video, I miss this car now.
Great video, and well researched. The VX220 is one of those emotive cars that will always give you find memories, a true classic.
Brilliant informative video.A real breath of fresh air.well done.
Brilliant, I'm now on my third VX220 and have really enjoyed this, I feel like I know a lot more about the cars history now.
This is a really fantastic video !
This was fantastic! Great great video
I love my Opel Speedster 2.2! I bought it 2002 new - and still use it after 18 year. It's my dream car.
As an owner of a VX, I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Off now to watch some of your others.
Brilliant- super informative and interesting
Great video. I learnt a bit there. Vx220 turbo owner.
i love your way of explaining thing ! good job greeting from Belgium
Absolutely superb! Love my VX!
A fantastic review about a great car!
wonderful material engagingly presented . . .
Your videos are amazing! Keep going the great job :-)
Great informative video. Thank you.
What a video! Thank you
Great video👏👏👏
Great video.
great video.
how dont you have more subs
he stupid
Great Video
I love this car.
this video is an awesome story of the collaboration between lotus and vauhall, if only the vx220 was still in production today
Been looking at an Elise as a daily drive, but you say the boot is a bit bigger on the 220. Think you've made my decision - though I'm worried that an electric guitar might not fit as I often take one with me for weekends away. Plus I think the car looks fantastic.
At 16:22 you are comparing the Elise S2 with the Rover engine to the VX220. There are quite some differences (e.g. ABS system with servo assisted brakes, airbag etc.) though between the two cars.
Thank you sooo much for the Video. Well done!! I really do like the VX220 / Opel Speedster. But unfortunately you were totally right with what you said. It is still a Vauxhall / Opel and that names "do not sound like" Porsche, Audi or Lotus :-(
Oh and also; used to be the boy at Lotus in Norfolk 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻🤣❤️
I owned the Opel Speedster for 3 years.
A blue NA with 7k km when I bought it.
It was an awesome little toy but I'm glad I 'survived' it 😉
Sometimes I become emotional about selling it...
It was problematic ?
@@bekirilkyaz2368
It is a dangerous little box and always entises one to drive a little irresponsibly if you know what I 😉
@@accept_everything_ i would love to get in one if i had a chance 😄
@@bekirilkyaz2368
They're available and prices start around 15k depending on its conditions, but be aware, spare parts can be pricey.
@@accept_everything_ they are not here in my country maybe a couple of them were sold, even gt roadsters are so rare here :(
Hi dreaming about getting one of these, you mentioned about cars being taken in for extensive repairs under warranty ,any idea what sort of repairs in general.thanks ,good video by the way.
Paintwork would blister.
@@Oldamegroin thanks.👍
Nice video! But was it vauxhall that started the car collaberation or Opel. Or did they do it togheter? I allways thaught the VX220 was just a rebadge Opel speedster!?
The 2.2 engine Z22SE was designed by Lotus
I think the VX220 is better looking than the Exige, which is gorgeous too. I have found a yellow one identical to the one inyour vid for 9k. Should I go for it? I need your advice.Quick. Thanks
taketimeout2 £9000 is a fair price for a vx220 nowadays (depending on mileage and other factors of course). They’re wonderful cars to drive and if it’s in good order it’ll be money well spent as they’re going up in value. Have a good look at the fibreglass clams and sills as if they’re cracked they can be super expensive to fix/replace. Best of luck!
@@AveragetoPoor Thanks for that I have had a close look and apart from nearside front wheel arch guard missing (could be in the boot) there are only tiny cracks on the top of one door edge and some superficial rust on a lot of those fancy torque screws . Underneath is clean, no dents to the undertray and the amount of cobwebs on the rear numberplate recess tells me its been standing a while. Seats are very good.
Its a standard VX220 but the number plate is VX 02 which makes me wonder if its a demonstration car.
Anyway your film has given me a head start so fingers crossed. Ill keep kicking the tyres and see if I can push it down to 7k. Lol.
taketimeout2 That does sounds like a nice example. If you haven’t already I’d highly recommend joining the VX220 owners Facebook Group, there are loads of super knowledgeable people on there and because there are so few cars, it’s quite possible that the car you’re looking to buy may have been owned at some point by someone on the group, and they’ll be able to give you a little more information about it (whether it had any problems during their ownership etc).
interesting
Do you think it's possible to find one of these in the states?
Saturn sky
Gavin Krimmel, Saturn Sky isn’t the same car at all. Other than maybe looking a little similar, as was based on a Vauxhall concept, and being a sports car. Saturn is front engined. VX220/Opel Speedster are mid engined and were all built by Lotus in England. Europe, not UK though, did get the Saturn Sky and was the Opel GT.
Wes, as I understand it probably have to wait until passes your 25 year rule. Or perhaps the show and drive reg, or whatever it’s called.
@@sparky4878 yeah it was my favorite car in forza 3 and I've always wanted one.
I think the Pontiac Solstice is the closest thing you got at the time
Does this have an LSD?
I feel the Elise looks significantly better, The vx220 looks like a cheaper MR2 spyder
That was great video with great edits and effects...thanks for information..opels problem financial issues because of GM..GM ruined many things like saab..I wish they burn in hell.
vx220 turbo, spend a few grand on a stage 2 or 3, and you've got a right Little killer of a car that 99% of the cars you'll bump into won't be able to keep up.
I have seen it race, its damn fast
Graham : "Vauxhall isn't a name you immediately associate with fast, lightweight and impractical sportscars"
Astra GTE/GSI/VXR, Carlton Turbo, Corsa VXR : Am I a joke to you?
He meant impractical not practical
Also wouldn’t call the Carlton lightweight. Plus those aren’t full on sports cars. Sportier versions of standard cars. This launched the VXR range, along with the Monaro, it predates the Astra and Corsa VXR.
Hey.Cool video, thanks for that. The only thing... This is not Vauxhall. Vauxhall doesn't exist anymore for few decades. This is OPEL. All Vauxhalls are just OPELs. Vauxhalls just not share same designs as OPELs. They are OPELs. Idk if there's some kind of British pride or what... Just accept it.
Argh man missed opportunity when you changed the 2 into a 4 instead of adding a 2+ for 2+2
Its copy of America car
Fantastic informative video.breath of fresh air.well done.
Not as pretty as an Elise, not as exotic, exclusive or desirable as ANY other halo car.
