As I listen to this story I look back at all the great M cars I've owned and I realize I don't regret the thousands or hundreds of thousands of miles I've put on the cars or all the track days and burned off tires. I can't imagine all the joy these owners miss out on by never driving their cars but to each their own.

Nothing I drive has a full service history.🙈 If it's got original engine, transmission and body panels that's where my OCD shuts down and my bargaining kicks in.
You might like this story then . My grandfather only ever bought used cars . In the fifties and sixty's cars came with thick plastic covers on the seats from the factory for shipping and people would leave them on , he only bought cars with them on , then drive them home and promptly remove them and laugh " sucker never got to feel how nice this cloth seat is " Cars are meant to be driven not garage queens.

@@JK-js2td Just some more ramblings from a old mechanic . Most car failures are within the first 5 k miles under warranty .or at 25- 50 k miles then every 25 to 50 k . Small things like brakes , alternators ,starters , battery . No need to pay for a brand new car when a clean used car 3-4 years old can do the same job at 40% of the price . At 30 mph can you see the dent in the car ? Will that dent make the car bad to drive nope . I have driven 1500 dollar cars my whole life to get around . Then have toys to spend money on that get beat to shit go fast in and wreck . Come Monday I can still get to work and park it anywhere and not care 1 bit. Race cars look good from 20 ft away. Chrome won't get you home.
It never made sense to me that someone buys their 'dreamcar', for usually a lot of money too, and then never drive it...
And some can’t imagine why’d you’d drive your dream car. That is what makes us human.
Tell me about it, I got my affordable dream car, a 2018 Ford Focus RS and it has just under 65k miles already. Love driving that car, it sees redline nearly every time I drive it.
Thats usually means they are painfully autistic. So OCD the thought of rainwater hitting the wheel well liners gives them a brain anurisim.

So very true! The thrill certainly is in the hunt...however as these analog M-Cars age gracefully, you'll find way more cars with stories than EAG will find without them!

I got a 96 impala n im trying to drive it into the ground n it will probably never die cuz you drive cars that’s what cars do lol guy in my town has one with 400k lol I’ve known multiple people with ones with 225k+
Some can 100% be an investment but only the super rare/exclusive stuff

This is like me and Toyota Camry wagons. Six so far and I've almost found "The One" several times.
I live relatively close to the BMW factory in upstate S.C. and I remember seeing these all the time..One day at an SCCA event on the campus of Clemson University a German guy showed up in one and smoked every lap times by several seconds.. It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen

@@Orcawhale1 At the time I didn’t know how great these cars were. I actually preferred my moms 2008 minivan over it until years later. It was garage kept in my grandmas for 12 years. Before 2 or my uncles had owned it. I am very grateful.

Love my MCoupe. When I broke the 50,000 mile mark I parked it and there it sits for the past 10yrs in safe storage. Thank you Steve Dinan for venturing out on a limb to put a supercharger in my baby. I said I would never sell it and I haven't. ///M
I loved this car ever since I first saw it reading my Car and Driver magazine review of it riding home on my hour-long middle school bus trip. I saw one not long after and it melted my heart seeing on in my small town. These cars are so special to those of us who really know what's up.
Eric, thank you for all you've done for the BMW community. You've inspired thousands if not millions!
my dad has a M Roadster in Cosmos Black with the Imola Red interior and all of the options and it only has like 20000 miles on it. He bought it new from 1998. Its rare with the EUDM spec S50B32 engine (arguably better than the S54) and is in right hand drive. What an incredible car it is to drive!
I got an 02 M Coupe back in 2014. Wonderful cars. I had to go all the way from California to Massachusetts to get the thing! But well worth it! Unfortunately they're worth a small fortune these days. Sad to hear that Eric passed away. I've followed EAG for about 7 years. Sometimes life takes some too soon.
Finally someone that likes this car, i remember when this lunch and bmw enthusiasts that i knew they said its ugly "I'm sure is not good" and now over the years people started to love it....
Man was a legend. I always watched the Enthusiast Auto video’s in awe.
Wow what a lucky person you are to have owned not one but nine , I had a yellow one for a short stint back in the early 2000’s still miss it today , so much character only rivaled by my Alfa Romeo Gt junior i had as well
my favorite sports car of all time, just wish it was reasonable to own and reliable.
I want to know what you actually do with your car so you can say it is unreliable? I mean i own bmw car 330i since 2012 brand new and never had serious problem, just regular maintenance. A lot of ppl said bmw unreliable but i have different experience.
i just want to know are they abuse their car or just read it from forum.

@@hbudiman14 Every brand has to have a lemon or overpriced maintenance at some point. Kind of like people that constantly get let down by apple phones. I have always had tire issues with most vehicles i have driven. One motorcycle got a flat the first 100 miles brand new. One car drove over a house key. A few other random stories. They were covered by warranty.
@@ejcucinelli7695 Thats not true. The s54 is a pretty bulletproof engine if maintained properly. The only real issue was the rod bearings, which were recalled. The s54's in the m roadsters and coupes were slightly different and never got the rod bearing recall if I remember correctly, so those s54's were known to have some issues. Other than those specific s54's though, they are pretty reliable and last long. Ive seen many e46 m3's with 200k+ miles on them and still going strong.
Get a rx8 and then this car will seem so reliable.
I remember when these were new and poking around one in a showroom with my friend in HS (pretending we had rich parents and money to buy one lol).
Last Monday evening I picked my first Z3 Coupe - I have owned an E36 M and a Z3 Roadster. I told my family they can sell it when Im dead. it's that good.
I drove this wonderful vehicle as a prototype with BMW, NA.

This is how it was with my mk4 vr6 GTI....my first one was a dud, sold it and went on the hunt for one that was the closest i could get to new back in 2016 for a 16 year old car. found a one owner, dealer maintained gem. Its my baby.

It was still detuned compared to the m3. Unfortunately it tends to be the other way around now due to emissions regulations we have in Europe

I used to work valet in Phoenix, I drove a few of these at the Crowne Plaza. Go up a few floors in the parking garage, these cars would rip! I was the only one on nights that knew how to drive a stick.

I've never owned a BMW but an M Coupe is still HIGH on my list of to-own-one-day cars. And the green with the tan interior is BEAUTIFUL! I remember seeing my first Clownshoe when touring the SC plant back in the late 90's... loved them then, still love them now! Very cool story but I'd be lying if I said it didn't sadden me a little that this car has been driven so little.

During corona lockdown last year, I took my z3 1.8 to the lift, gave him prefacelift wide body, 4.3cm spacers to reach wider fenders in the back, engine from totaled e30 m3, 6 speed manual, limited slip diff, did the whole bodywork, painted in original boston green, renewed the seats, .... and much more, took me 3 months to finish
Now the car grew to my heart, doubt I will ever sell it, now its one of the kind, I don't think it has an equal on this planet, altrought it is so simple.
I really dig those older Beamers. I'm not sure why but the 9 is one of my favorites. It might be because I'm into wagons.

I owned a metallic yellow '02 for nearly 18 years. Fun to drive! Always got looks ... often had taunts to race. I typically told the taunter that I don't race x 😛. Have a couple great tickets for speeding that I was happy to pay. Z3 M Coupe deserves to be driven!
Z3 M3 coupe...I want to get a black one. Remove the back side windows, put on a vinyl roof, a landau bar on each of the new vinyl-clad panels behind the B-pillar, and make the coolest hearse for "Little people." Clown shoe my ass- how unimaginative!

Hey Ed. Great video as always. I had a question about the app for android. Is there an estimated time for when the Android version of the app will get an update? It is extremely hard to use. I'm not sure you have seen the reviews in the playstore but there are some prominent issues.
I think I talked to this guy about buying an e46 M3 a few years ago. He doesn't make you feel like you're buying a car as much as joining his car family.
Just bought a 2008 Z4M Coupe. Not quite the same car, but the rough formula is there. I get it. A RWD Hatch is a magic thing here in the States.

My uncle had one when I was a kid in that fantastic light blue colour, and I was so sad when he sold it
my absolute favorite car ever, I saw one displayed in a BMW showroom when they just came out, black on black with all options and the M color stitching and in person it was breathtaking to me. I'd take one of those over any other car, except maybe a red on tan Testarossa which is something I have also gotten up close and personal with. Some cars are just magic, the F40 is another but it would end up not being driven with me because of how much of a racecar it actually is, you don't really see it on video or pics as easily but it really jumps out and slaps you in person. A Testarossa is impractical but it's nothing like the F40.

I remember my s52 swapped 99' e36 328i walking away from a friends fully modded M coupe - with my 328s 15 inch wheels, open diff, radial tires :D
Even though the M coupe was possibly even lighter, it wasn't as aerodynamic so after about 110mph you walked away

I got a 1987 buick gnx (my grandpa worked at buick) its got 1237 miles on it I got the original oil was changed at 500 mi got the original gm washer fluid in a jug still got the valve caps in original locations its num 378 i will be parting with it soon to send my kids to college

I completely understand the need. Here in the Middle East the M Coupe is as rare as rocking horse shit, so when one came up at the right time I had to buy it, regardless of condition or mileage....I just had to have one! I personally would never buy the S52, and luckily the earlier models outside of North America came with the S50 and 316hp, and not the S52 and 240.
The only M coupe I've ever seen in person had euro license tags, pretty strange sight at a gas station in upstate NY.
My absolute favorite / dream car hopefully I can buy one before it skyrockets up

The valve stem caps part of the story is just unbeleivable,,,if I hadn't done things like that myself....
I love my 2002 BMW Z3 M roadster would love to turn it in to a coupe. Main reason I say that is as much as I love my monster I can't take it out in any rain because my top has leaked since I got it in early 2003. I just click over 100,344 miles on it and it is been great for me besides the 4 tops I have had put on it and 8 full sets of tires and only 2 sets was front.
If it makes you feel any better, my '99 M Coupe leaks from its window seals too ;) :)
@@VersanGetryx Nnnnnooooooooooo!!! Mine drips in 4 spot. Where the top first folds up and at the top front where all 3 point come together. I've been told it is just the nature of the beast by BMW when I first got it. Drive my truck or Jeep on rainy days or put my cover on when parking it. I was wanting to get a Z3M coupe or Z4M couple but the Z3M leak too I'm not so sure now.
@@fryreartechnology7611 Haha don't let it stop you.. just need to get some new door seals as a lot of bmw rubber parts kind of dry rot or get brittle if unused over time. Mine has been very reliable otherwise (I have 10 years of history in receipts). Love the roadsters too!!
@@VersanGetryx last 4 sets only kept the water out for a few weeks but in Arkansas when it rains 'not hard' it'll leak just sitting in my parking spot. I use to just put towels on my seats now I have stopped replacing them and just put the 'lube' on them Honda makes some really nice stuff on Amazon to the S2000 tops which help but just sunny day drives putting the top down for that 12 years

Bit too safe/obvious choice for me, everyone loves the clownshoe. I’d be brave & get the Z4M Coupe. Rarer, better car but less sought after and so cheaper.
Not everyone loves the clown shoe. My wife hates mine...well she hates both my toys 🤦🏻♂️. It is marmite though and certainly not everyone’s cup of tea. Z4M Coupe the better car all round, but lacks the skunkworks background and not quite as controversial looking, but a great car nonetheless.
The Z4M Coupe lost something in the process, it isn't as wild or analog. I really like both though and ended up with a '99 S52 M Coupe as it was the most different from my C63 AMG, versus previous e36 M3 and e46 M3s I had.

A friend of mine in high school was gifted a BMW clown shoe by her grandfather who drove it daily and didn’t really understand what he had at the time. That was a fun ride.
