Yes it was cause some slave who got freedom sold and brought other slaves usually members of their family or friends this is a fact and first african slave anthony Angola 16 century was freed and guess how he made money oh right he brought other slaves
The problem with that statement is it conflates slavery with being born black in America. Nobody benefits from being a slave. Let's state that as an unequivocal truth. That said, people CAN benefit from being born in the USA as opposed to say, Rwanda or Somalia or Kenya, etc... (and I say that as retired Army officer who handed out food to starving Somalians in Mogadishu in the early 90s). Getting the trip to what would become the United States and having a family which became citizens of the USA is beneficial, not the slavery. The problem is most people can't think it through to realize the two are not one and same.
two things can be true at once, you just have to have a big enough brain and not be in a cult to get your head around it. 1. slavery is bad 2. anything that introduces an entirely oppressed race into the freest nation on our planet will be a net positive in the future. since slavery existed in every single nation that had humans, and since africans were selling their own kind into global slavery anyway, then yes, if you were sold into slavery for america, you won the lottery for your progeny (COMPARED) to the available alternatives. it’s really not that hard to understand
@jessicaw9235 i heard an explanation the other day that I don't necessarily agree with and it makes you think, slavery is still going on in places like Africa as well as Africa is usually in a state of war. In the person's explanation of it was slavery wasn't a good thing and even through the bad stuff it inadvertently led to a migration that continues to keep descendants of slaves in a better place then where they came such as Africa etc. I thought it was pretty interesting, makes you think a bit. Completely different take then the usual ones you hear

Lets get the facts right the first time. YOU DO NOT BECOME GAY OR TRANS from reading a book or a teacher, adult, or parent, expressing positive views about being gay or trans. 😅😂

I think it’s like a post-modern moderator who brings his positionality to the role. I’m personally disappointed in the way he tried to correct another participant about a library book banning process. Temporarily taking a book off the shelf for review and removing it from a collection are two separate actions. To confound the two is embarrassing
They have banned books that involve the the first two subjects you mentioned. I was so shocked to find that out. I can understand not wanting books about sexual preferences in school but why ban the others. Like why ban books from Maya Angelou😅
@@angeloc7486LOL no they didn’t. And books aren’t banned. A library can only have 5000 to 10,000 books. So does that mean that 100,000,000 books are banned??? That’s how you people think.
I don’t understand what the problem is. Why can’t we include the great white writers with the great black, Asian and indigenous writers what’s the big deal?
Because according to a certain demographic the great white writers are greater than the great other writers because the great white people in the past decided that white is more superior. The fact that they are white always makes their literature greater. It’s just racism
I came here to say that. Like he insulted sooo many writers that are not white because they have not had the longevity to be put on a pedestal his passion is clouding his judgement. Like the n word is in mark twains books. if that's why is banned then, I guess, but isn't the story more than just the language used at the time. Can we edit/abbreviate that word out... I don't know.. is that what the solution is. What I do know is reading is down because books are boring to many kids... So it's important to have captivating books and even provocative books to engage curiosity. I a read books by Lois Duncan... The gift of magic. It had astral projection in it and I think it had some domestic abuse. I loved that book I read so many other of the writers works for FUN. That book would be at least temporarily banned on Florida for the domestic abuse, and rebellion themes maybe even the magic. And my love for reading as a kid would have been unfostered. I think more in library regulation, a librarian use their discernment and a parent confirms might be better. But a curriculum is established to teach fundamentals Also another reason kids can't read is the way we teach reading, the use of phonics, being minimized. There is a good PBS video on UA-cam about how the new way we teach reading is flawed.
@@maikubraxtonI would even say that books like Mark Twain are necessary now because they show the change in language and what was considered appropriate political discourse from early American history. But I pretty much disagree with you entirely, he did not say that black authors shouldn't be considered great classical literature, it's just a fact that the majority of those works are from white authors. Part of that is probably due to the way minorities were treated hundreds of years ago, but even works like Shakespeare are not comparable because the indigenous people of Africa and americas didn't even have a written language, so of course there are no books from them during that period. There are amazing authors that aren't white that are considered "classical literature" Dubois, Hughes, Douglas, Sowell. These authors are excluded from what liberal schools want because they advocate for a "color blind" approach to society. Another thing I avidly disagree with you about is why kids aren't reading. It's not like kids read for hundreds of years and then only in the last 3 decades have found reading boring just because the books are boring. We have our kids hooked on the dopamine drip that is TV, social media, and instant gratification. We need to have kids check their phones into school upon entry, if not create a culture change of flip phones for anyone under 18. The books haven't changed, society and our expectations of kids has. We have lowered the bar so far for our youth that of course they won't read. We have lowered the bar so far for our teachers that we can't even fire teachers that are bad at their jobs. According to a department of education study, 1 in 10 public school students will be victims of sexual abuse from a public school employee. The modern day teachers union is the worst thing we could do to our education system. They make it impossible to fire bad teachers, frown on showing praise to good teachers, and act as a political activism group that is more concerned with the teachers experience than the children's.
@@jamesbizs If you believe a child is going to school as a boy and coming back a girl, you are the epitome of insane. Boys In Blue This book is written as a memoir of the experience of what a therapist might consider a history of profound sexual abuse. It is also consciously written with the purpose of being “therapeutic” to a specific population of young people who struggle with their experience of sexuality in an African American culture. It is a book that in my opinion would not be recommended to survivors of sexual abuse for purposes of recovery. In fact on the contrary it could be highly triggering given the graphic depictions. It is a book that also fully embraces and advocates for a particular ideology considered by Christians or Muslims to run counter to their teaching on sexual behavior. The least of which is the need for the expression and application of the value of relational justice in the realm of healing from sexual trauma. As a psychotherapist of 35 years who has received extensive training in Complex PTSD. I would be very circumspect to suggest this book as something that the general population of high school and especially middle school students should have access to read. I would want to be very careful to whom I might recommend this book. As a therapist I would want to have intimate details of the personal experience of the individual to make that decision. Something librarians in public institutions are not equipped to evaluate. It seems that as a culture we have embraced the need to advocate for the supremacy of identity to such an extent that we have completely lost our ability to establish and maintain a moral balance.
AND it does seem like an easy choice to NOT shelve in the library of a school! that a panelist defended it (using a lens of identity as justification) shows how ridiculous it's become
@@SMDD-og2dm Exactly! They call it a 'book ban' to defend their ulterior motives. If they were honest, they would understand not all books in the public library or bookstores belong in public schools where minors have access to them without parental consent. Of course, this is the same ideology that says children should have sexual freedom, and elective medical procedures without parental consent/notification.
I respectfully disagree. I think this book may be triggering may be healing, it's subjective. I think reading you are not alone can be beneficial. I don't know if a young child but age restrictions on who could check oit the book. A high schooler might have a better grasp of the memoir. It is an imperfect example.
The fact that several of these people are on the school board and are all adults, however can't seem to have an effective debatable conversation says a lot.
The woman in the beige suit and bad hair doesn't want parents knowing about the graphic details in 'GenderQueer". Every time a parent has tried to read from that book in front of a school board meeting they were shut down because the reading was obscene. Too obscene for adult school board members, but perfectly fine for 3rd graders,.
@@JordanbobbaYou can say that if you want, but I don't see anything in that comment that was false. Did you ever watch a school board meeting where a parent reads aloud one of those pornographic books? Done for the sake of bringing it to the attention of what they have available to children in their very own libraries. Call it the "drinking the Kool-Aid" if you will, but if it's true, it's true.
The shear mention of our existence is considered "obscene" to some people. What they want is to leave us out of history because they don't want us to exist. But WE DO. Some of those kids ARE us. We have always been there and by the grace of God, we will always be. You either care about those kids or you don't.
Well at least that's consistent. But I think ignoring literature as one of the most important subjects to study is wrong. Literature, the ability to understand it, and explain that understanding is incredibly important.
It’s not just that. Literally everything has been infected by D E I. For example, instead of a math problem just saying: Two trains leave different cities heading toward each other. Train A, leaving from City X, travels at 60 mph. Train B, leaving from City Y, travels at 80 mph. Both trains are headed toward Central Station, which is located between City X and City Y. Central Station is 280 miles from City X and 320 miles from City Y. If both trains leave their respective stations at the same time, when and where do they meet? They’ll write the problem like this: Two trains leave different cities heading toward each other. Train A, leaving from City X, serves a predominantly underserved, lower-income community. It travels at 60 mph, and its route was designed to ensure the residents have access to equitable transportation. Train B, leaving from City Y, serves a wealthier, urban population and travels at 80 mph. Both trains are headed toward Central Station, which is located between City X and City Y. Central Station is 280 miles from City X and 320 miles from City Y. If both trains leave their respective stations at the same time, when and where do they meet? Additionally, how much extra time will it take for the community served by Train A to arrive at Central Station compared to Train B, and what recommendations could be made to reduce that disparity to promote transportation equity? Now instead of the teacher spending time going over actual math, the subject has been changed to talking about DEI. This is how it works. It is insidious. Those in charge of pushing these concepts are radical Marxists. Listen to the women in this video. I can only get 10:45 into it before nearly barfing. When I was a kid, in the 70s and the 80s, Judy Blum’s Forever wasn’t in our school library. A friend of mine had a paperback copy, and we passed it around among our friend group behind our parents backs, hiding it. As it should be. If your kid isn’t savvy enough to sneak dirty books behind their parents backs, then they have no business reading them. It is not a new thing for parents to want to block graphic content from schools. It’s a new thing that some parents and schools want to have graphic content available to kids. And no, molestation isn’t normal, and doesn’t “just happen.” It should not be normalized.
Exactly! When they call it a 'book ban' they are doing so to ignite their base to support their indoctrination - they know what they are doing. If they were honest, with no deceptive intentions, they would be able to accept that a book available in a public library, and for purchase in stores/online, but not in a unsupervised library for minors (meaning without parents) are two different things, and that is acceptable for a book to not be in one place, and in others.
No one is trying to normalize molestation . They're just trying to keep books with that subject in school libraries ... if the Bible can remain in school libraries so could all the other books yall want to ban .
TBH, I vaguely remember the structure of my school library as a child...but that's all thanks to a horrible memory. However, I can't help but step outside of myself, and try to imagine that kid that may find safety in the library. Reading could give them an escape, possibly from suffering the same trauma that molestation causes. Because it absolutely DOES happen, and some of those books can get that child to see that it's not normal, and give them courage to speak up about it. So again, nobody is saying it's normal, but it's important to make those resources available to those who need it, so they know they're not alone. Although, I do believe there should be reform in the process of an in-depth review of the books in their libraries, to filter VERY CLEAR and explicitly obscene content.
That's actually not true. Frankenstein has had its fair share or bans and calls to be banned, and is also not commonly recommended even if available in libraries.
a lot of great books were written by women. even uncle toms cabin was written by a woman. women authors have existed for centuries. i remember reading a ton of books in school that had women authors. it was never a big deal. we even read harry potter
If you never introduce non white authors to the public, especially in schools, they will never know who they are. Like this man that didn't know there were great non white authors, he may believe that is because he never heard of one, but that's simply because they weren't shown their work in his educational career. That is not a testament of these non white authors lack of talent, but proof we have not introduced enough diversity in our teachings. Many other countries dive deep into international works of these authors, we have a lack of knowledge of the world and are very self obsessed. We have some of the most talented authors in the world, but that does not mean we should exclude other great works that have not been taught. We, in the end, decide what measures up as a "Great piece of literature.". Being ignorant of these works is not a fair way to measure all of the worlds literature.
I am from India, and I have read 1000s books from folks all around the world over many decades. Yes, lot of them were written by white men. However, it never occurred to me that it is a factor in enjoying/learning literature. Do white men cringe using the Indian numerals or zero because they didn't invent them? I doubt it. Knowledge is useful irrespective of who invented/discovered them.
Agree and also “white people” is soo incredibly reductive, I am Danish and like reading Russian authors, culturally Denmark and Russia have almost nothing in common, except both peoples are “white”… the whole white/black/brown thing is only in America, and such a useless perspective…
Totally! If we just stuck to those that look like us we would miss out on finding valuable insight about being HUMAN. Finding these connections helps create tolerance.
It's partially about availability. Not even about just what race wrote it, but also about age, gender, etc. They stick to the same old books from a million years ago and never change it. As much as I enjoyed The Scarlet Letter, is that really the best we can offer young teens? I was lucky to have an English teacher who valued diversity even before all this "woke" stuff. It was just considered being a decent human being back then. Most of my other classes only had Olde Englishe literature and poetry.
Maybe maybe not. Is school primarily a diversity machine? Or is it an institution that attempts to provide the best examples within the respective subjects, wherein diversity exists?

Some need that little push in order to thrive, and when you're tied to getting your whole class to a certain level or lose funding....you have to adopt new ways and it's found that inclusion helps....it's why the US is a democracy. My son is a trans man and I am 100% opposed to teaching children about Gender Identity. No child under 21 should begin medical transition. It is dangerous and irreversible. I adore my son, and he made the right decision for himself (he is still attracted to men, so this was not a case of "transing away the gay"). And because he is secure in his decision he has zero need to impose Gender ID on children. It is reckless and insane. Many actual transsexual adults are opposed to teaching Gender ID to kids, not least because it fuels backlash against transsexual people.
But what's happening in schools is that kids are learning about gender id outside of school and it's being brought up at schools Nation wide . Should schools just ignore this ? Kids get bullied over their gender id should school just ignore the subject of the bullying ? OR should they work to normalize it ?
No, it wasn't 'transing away the gay' in your daughter's case. Instead, your daughter now 'identifies' as a gay man. This is happening more frequently with young women, and is doing great harm to the gay male community. Now, gay men are told they have to accept 'transmen' in their dating pool. There are literally no gay dating apps where a man can say he will only date actual biological men. This is homophobia, gaslighting, sex by deception, and could even be considered as 'corrective rape'. Your daughter is female and no matter how she identifies, she will never be a gay man.

What I find interesting about this conversation from both sides is where the line is drawn on what books should be in a classroom. Whether it be the material the book contains or even the author of said book. I feel parents should have the right to voice their child shouldn’t read books on certain materials they deem inappropriate, but I don’t think ALL books should be banned across the board, especially ones that are from authors who are not your typical Mark Twain or Shakespeare. Times have changed and the literature we read should as well and reflect what future generations may find interesting or could learn that past generations did/ could not learn.
Yep, as soon as someone says “ummm… obviously I’m a person of color” I am tuned out completely. PEOPLE ARE SO TIRED OF RACE CENTERED CONVERSATION. Race shouldn’t matter. It’s these race obsessed people that make it relevant.

Teachers, teach math, English and reading. It’s that simple. Keep your personal feelings and political opinions to yourself. We do not share the same values and beliefs so let parents raise their children with the values they choose. I don’t want glorified daycare workers with a useless in the real world degree and at the bottom end of the professional ladder, indoctrinating my children.
There is a reason all socialist/communist/authoritarian governments ban private/homeschooling. Germany and Austria still ban homeschooling today. They know that children are impressionable, and if they spend the more time with a gov. teacher they will accept the teacher's values not their parents. That is the goal of education right now, not skills. All the better if 1/3 of the kids can't read - they won't question what they are told as adults.
I agree, but I also think good public schools should be a priority. My parents came from Albania and there was zero curriculum on it. My family taught me our history, our values and beliefs. I didn't feel left out of anything. I will say I know I received a good foundation in Boston public schools. Now I'm in Florida, and having seen the curriculum of HS students that worked for me, I was shocked at how poor it was. The current arguments of diversity are a waste of time. I think more focus on basics that prepare you for life . The behavior teachers are dealing with is getting in the way of everything. The threat of a weapon wielding maniac shouldn't be happening. Meanwhile adults are arguing over BS. How important is it for a child to identify with a character in a book, as opposed to having a decent peaceful day at school.
@@dancer23918 Or maybe it's to prevent people from teaching radical education, ya know those countries were heavily influenced by Nazism at one point, right?
There great community groups and resources for homeschooling, even homeschool libraries and resource centers in many areas. It is not as scary as it once was. Also, whether you choose public/private always remember whomever your child spends the most hours with during the day - they will accept those values/traditions, so choose your school and teachers wisely.
You are correct and if you have the ability/resources I HIGHLY recommend homeschooling!! I am a college teacher and the homeschooled students I get each semester are ALWAYS the best!! They are always the most thoughtful, respectful, well rounded, developed, high quality work, amazing social skills, etc. This is why in my family, we have homsechooled everyone until college- although in 8-12 grade we do have them attend certain classes in a public school so that they still get that experience as well.
As a former teacher of 15+ years, I highly recommend homeschooling over public or private education. Your child will not only be better learned, but better socialized. These woke ideologies and activist teachers is going to take a LONG time to flush out. I’m 100% for dismantling the Federal Dept of Education and leaving education completely up to the states.
@36:58 books like that being in school libraries have helped children who have been victims of SA find the words to express what’s been happening to them
The problem is that one side is willing to listen and understand the other side's viewpoints whereas those arguing for more DEI just shout down opposing ideas. Poor moderation with two angry and rude guests just made for a difficult watch to be honest. Do better next time
A good first try. Now get some guidelines in place that promote deep listening and curiosity about each other’s points of view. (Examples: compassionate Communication and Non Violent Communication). All I see here are people talking over each other, interrupting and being defensive. Is anyone going to walk away feeling heard? Will anyone walk away feeling that was helpful? What if you built common ground first by talking more about peoples’ values? There are many good models out there for conversations that heal and restore a level of trust
yes precisely this! building common ground first would go a long way towards easing these conversations, imo. Only two of these folks had anything approaching an open mind for this conversation
"Promoting" curiosity is merely lip service. Curiosity can only come from within, with a regulated nervous system that believes it's safe. "Compassionate communication" is often spoken about but seldom seen from the very people who proclaim it
These people really believe that kids only started getting bullied for their differences after tolerance programs and teaching began? How delusional can you get?
Mary Shelley, Charlotte Bronte, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou…tell me with a straight face you don’t think the work of these women belong in a classroom
Free Press, I am thrilled you put this together.. I'm looking forward to more. "Families should have input on that.. " that's the first time I've heard someone advocate for that, I have to admit.. that would be nice. "you are an able bodied white man", "it's easy for you to say this as a white man" - we know immediately who is a follower and believer in intersectionality, which is social/political theory, not necessarily de facto truth. These people themselves are a product of this education system that is being critiqued. 11:50 hits the nail on the head - too many activists want to redefine what education means. The crux of the matter is that their version of education involves ideas from people such as Marxian educational theorists Paulo Freire, who claimed "all education is political". Essentially public schools have become a battleground for a mine vs. yours truth. I say hold on a minute, if we are going to redefine education, let's be honest and transparent about those points.. if we need to hide and dodge while we redefine what a woman is (Title IX), then that's not being honest is it? Gotta say, the critique of how public schools have become ideological indoctrination centers is warranted.
One other point I thought that could have been raised: Teaching or having students read Ibram x Kendi or Ta-Nehisi Coates will challenge previously held world views, no question. However, if those authors are included but Thomas Sowell is left out, why is that? A truly holistic approach would include Thomas Sowell, Roland Fryer or Walter Williams, let the students weigh the competing perspectives on things like race, economics, society and justice. That would be a meaningful advancement of critical thinking. I suspect those thinkers are entirely absent from the advocated curriculums that are most contentious.
@@PTucket that’s assuming we live in a culture where parties who share the worldview with first two are willing to yield and have a debate that questions their beliefs. They are too convinced of their own belief system around that issue. If it truly was like a comparative religion class, sure.. why not.

The one thing I got from this debate is that it seems to be happening too late in the process. Who are the people making the book lists that are sent to school libraries? That is where the debate needs to go. Once the books are in the schools, the educators get defensive being questioned by the parents, and it devolves into accusations of book banning.

Childhood is always so difficult. The limbic system is not fully developed until the age of 21, meaning kids can make a great decision one moment, and a terrible decision the next. Their minds are still in the developmental stage - so absolutely NO permanent decisions should be made especially surgeries! First - do no harm. Like all of us, children will struggle and grow while developing later to be able to make life altering decisions for themselves as an adult. We should teach compassion and acceptance.

Guess brother just guess lol

But a curriculum is established to teach fundamentals
Also another reason kids can't read is the way we teach reading, the use of phonics, being minimized.

This book is written as a memoir of the experience of what a therapist might consider a history of profound sexual abuse.
Update- you drank the kool-aid
It’s obvious you’re a MAGAt.
The shear mention of our existence is considered "obscene" to some people. What they want is to leave us out of history because they don't want us to exist. But WE DO. Some of those kids ARE us. We have always been there and by the grace of God, we will always be. You either care about those kids or you don't.
To the guy on the right. Tell me you're racist without telling me you're racist.
Math, science, history, language, biology, etc should be taught in in the classroom. All other books should be in a public library.
Well at least that's consistent. But I think ignoring literature as one of the most important subjects to study is wrong. Literature, the ability to understand it, and explain that understanding is incredibly important.
It’s not just that. Literally everything has been infected by D E I. For example, instead of a math problem just saying:
Two trains leave different cities heading toward each other.
They’ll write the problem like this:
Two trains leave different cities heading toward each other.
They’ve been completely brainwashed by this nonsense. It is destroying our country.
Some of the women are catty, rude and interrupted on numerous occasions. They even laughed amongst themselves as if they were in junior high. Sad but very telling. The fellows came off sounding like well grounded, intelligent and thoughtful participants. But of course since they are white men, their privileged words bounced right off of the loud mouths.
Correct!!
Agreed.....religion should not be taught in schools at all....keep to the facts, opinions should be pushed aside.
If your child wants a book not found on the library shelf, buy the book and have it at home. Share it with friends.
Some parents can barely afford food and bills.
You can rent these books free at your public library.
What's the point of a public library if some books are banned for no reason. I really don't understand how anyone can justify the government banning certain speech from appearing in public institutions.
@@Cruzzin2018 It's incredibly easy to find books for dirt cheap online. There's really no excuse why a parent can't afford the $10 to buy there kid a book.
@@Matt-yj5smand if the kid is an avid reader? Maybe reads 2 books a week? That’s $1040 a year, nevermind the fact that books actually aren’t $10.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this was hard to watch. Just because they’re not polished debaters doesn’t mean we want to listen to them talk over each other for an hour. I couldn’t finish it
When I was a kid, in the 70s and the 80s, Judy Blum’s Forever wasn’t in our school library.
The fact that you were hiding reduced your exposure! They don't want that now. They must indoctrinate their next victims to accept it.
Amen!
Frankenstein was written by a woman and is considered one for the great pieces of literature. No one calling for it to be removed.
I never had to read Frankenstein in school
What's your point?
This dude has got to be the WORST moderator ever. Like what the hell. Why is bro even there?

There's nothing wrong with books written by white men.
But there's also nothing wrong with adding more books written by more diverse people.
Or is it an institution that attempts to provide the best examples within the respective subjects, wherein diversity exists?
the guy who said that kids shouldn't be made to feel valued (i.e., treated with basic respect), should not be a parent. Like I feel bad for his kids since he believes they aren't valued.
He said “focus on good education”. What’s sad about the whole discussion is that everyone agrees with this but what is good and how to give it is in question. What’s worse to me is that they all agree on a whole lot more and can’t say it aloud out and I don’t know if they can even acknowledge it
The point is that the education systems purpose is to educate kids not make them feel special
Some need that little push in order to thrive, and when you're tied to getting your whole class to a certain level or lose funding....you have to adopt new ways and it's found that inclusion helps....it's why the US is a democracy. You feel a little special with your right to votez and your ability to feel seen is why we haven't fully devolved into chaos because we are all a bit invested. Same for kids
21:20 there is no such thing as the "school family". The school is NOT your childs family. Ever. This attempt to eradicate boundaries is disgusting and scary.
A better word would have been community, but it does take a village. I believe we have an isolation issue caused by our radical individualism.
Your child sits in a classroom for 6+ hours...5 days out of the week...with 20-30+ other little individual personalities. Making it a space that fits all of this is HARD so it's an attempt to accommodate all of this and get as many as possible to a certain threshold or lose funding...this is why adopting varying styles of inclusion is there, to welcome of this. Don't like it...keep your child home educate them yourself or pick up the slack for the failing school system
@Calleronline1-vf1eh blah blah blah. It's still not their family. I work a job for 8 hours a day. My coworkers are not my family
Shut up- we tell our students to love each other and care for others- like a family.

It is, but so is our situation. Open debate is what we need.

What if you built common ground first by talking more about peoples’ values? There are many good models out there for conversations that heal and restore a level of trust
yes precisely this! building common ground first would go a long way towards easing these conversations, imo. Only two of these folks had anything approaching an open mind for this conversation
Needs to be longer to get to any solution
"Promoting" curiosity is merely lip service. Curiosity can only come from within, with a regulated nervous system that believes it's safe.
"Compassionate communication" is often spoken about but seldom seen from the very people who proclaim it
These people really believe that kids only started getting bullied for their differences after tolerance programs and teaching began? How delusional can you get?
You know how racist you have to be not sign something saying will be anti-racist. Like make it make sense
Wild to me honestly. I really liked and enjoyed the different perspectives on education.
One other point I thought that could have been raised:
Teaching or having students read Ibram x Kendi or Ta-Nehisi Coates will challenge previously held world views, no question.
The impression I get is they are not willing to yield or to be questioned, doing so would be in their own words, “yielding to white supremacy”. They are too convinced of their own belief system around that issue. If it truly was like a comparative religion class, sure.. why not.
To me, all 3 of those authors are better for college courses, not high school unless the high school students are taking AP classes. The average high school kid is still learning the foundational information for IS History, Government , Geography, and World History.
Nice conversation that is important. Thank you
A live camera feed of what's going on in the class should be provided to the parents.
Just home school... if a parent has time to watch a school feed all day, they should just educate their kid themselves and leave everyone else alone.
@@extremelyvetted8083 Most parents either work or do not have any expertise in education. What's wrong with having a window to make sure your children are not getting abused?
@@tko8218abused... pls. Your kids don't have mouths to tell you they are being abused?
@@tko8218 paranoia much?
The one thing I got from this debate is that it seems to be happening too late in the process. Who are the people making the book lists that are sent to school libraries? That is where the debate needs to go.
Once the books are in the schools, the educators get defensive being questioned by the parents, and it devolves into accusations of book banning.
The part where they were lambasting Assassination Classroom is ridiculous I’m not super familiar with the series but I did identify that the alien legitimately cares about the children’s education in a way that is ironically kind of positive
It's so sad to see a complete lack of recognition for the suffering of the other side. It’s terrifying how identity can shape us-how it dehumanizes those outside our group until their lives seem meaningless to us.
The moderator was a FAIL ...
Is America this behind in education? I'm over 40 and my high school literature selections were still reasonably diverse and inclusive considering it was the 90s. This is so bizarre to hear.
In certain states like Florida, yes.
Completely agree, but as the one lady said....we are talking about less than 1 %....my question is: How can we fix the fact that kids are illiterate when we spend 50% of our time concentrating on 1% of the kids?
@@trevorlamberson16 Every study has shown that the number one driver of student success is having at least one adult who is consistently engaged in that student's education success. If a parent/grandparent/neighbor is not available to the kids, and we have an education model where they have a different teacher every year, and later for each class, no amount of taxpayer money can fix that. People are social creates from birth.
I was shocked that the women said '10k' is not enough. There are so many great private schools that charge much less then that and have better outcomes. Homeschool kids are flourishing and I can tell you most of those families don't spend 10k per student. It's all going to admin anyway. Duval county just voted to raise property taxes for teachers pay, and the union fought long about how to distribute it. Now the schools are closing because people are pulling their kids and the board is outraged.
@@dancer23918In South Florida everything is expensive. I know at least 2 of the panel members are from down here.
Typical private school at least 10k. I had to switch my son's school because the price went up to 26k.
Homeschooling can be cheap but many of us like to add enrichment activities/ programs
Maturation of brain and body by age 26.
can someone tell me why the moderator/facilitator is joining in on the debates...
“two sexes, zero genders and infinite personalities” - 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
the enemy of good is perfection, and this was a good starting point.
watch this debate/conversation with a group of your friends or family and then have your own discussion... we could all use some practice speaking (and listening) to people who hold differing opinions
Protect trans kids!
I live in California. At one time I voted yes for every proposition on the ballot that had something to do with giving money to schools...it tugs at your conscience right? So I voted Yes on every one. Not any more...based on something one of the women said to the effect: The amount of administrative bloat in our schools. I think that there is so much waste and misdirection and outright pilfering of money in government that I vote no on every bond measure and every initiative that sends money to schools or every other organization for that matter.
Overall the moderator did a HORRIBLE JOB of keeping conversation focused
I really wish someone would stop them from interrupting eachother . The moment they attempt to try to interrupt, they’ve already stopped listening to what that person is saying.
While not as bad as what we see on standard mainstream media discussions, this is still pretty abysmal. No one is able to give a cogent nuanced opinion or even explain their view of education in simplest terms.
There’s some cringeworthy straw manning from the school board lady, some not so thinly veiled virtue signalling from the three other ladies and the two right-leaning gentlemen just seem bored with the spectacle after half an hour has passed.
Not sure why there was even a host present.
Tell me how America is freer than let’s say Canada. What mystical rights are we missing? This idea that the US is the freest is so outdated and strange
idk i like it here even if canada so cold
