13 years late to the party but glad to be here. Thanks Detectorists.
All of us are late to Beethoven!
🥲
I'm ten years too late and am totally captivated by this song.
Katerina Pich me too.
Never too late to love a song
It will be with you for the next ten years. :)
Me too, it makes me so happy
No man, you arrived right on time. But I concur this is totally, a captivating perfomance.
My sister played this song in the car the last time that I'd ever see her. Your work has been a source of comfort for me in the hardest of times. God bless you, Johnny Flynn.
WuCurdy what do you mean last time you'd see her?
I guess the poor lass has left this world.
Johnny Flynn has another song called "Raising the Dead". Hope it comforts you too.
I'm so sorry for your loss WuCurdy, that was a beautiful parting song, even though you didn't know it at the time.
I lost my brother to drowning, I can picture he and I singing this, he was an avid fisherman & a powerful singer.
Wishing you comfort & solace.
Lyrics:
All that I have is a river
The river is always my home
Lord, take me away
For I just cannot stay
Or I'll sink in my skin and my bones
The water sustains me without even trying
The water can't drown me, I'm done
With my dying
Please help me build a small boat
One that'll ride on the flow
Where the river runs deep
And the larger fish creep
I'm glad of what keeps me afloat
The water sustains me without even trying
The water can't drown me, I'm done
With my dying
Now deeper the water I sail
And faster the current I'm in
That each night brings the stars
And the song in my heart
Is a tune for the journeyman's tale
The water sustains me without even trying
The water can't drown me, I'm done
With my dying
Now the land that I knew is a dream
And the line on the distance grows faint
So wide is my river
The horizon a sliver
The artist has run out of paint
Where the blue of the sea meets the sky
And the big yellow sun leads me home
I'm everywhere now
The way is a vow
To the wind of each breath by and by
The water sustains me without even trying
The water can't drown me, I'm done
With my dying
❤
Their voices compliment each other so well. I want to curl up in a ball at their feet and listen to them forever.
and i want to curl up right beside you and laugh for an eternity longer
@Sherri, check out First aid kit for voices that compliment each other😉💚✌
@sherrijamison yes that's it exactly! I could listen to umpteen songs of Johnny and Laura together... Bliss 🌹

Truly 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌👌💕😍🥰😘
I dont think I've ever heard a more beautiful pairing of voice talent. Johnny's voice seems very grounded, while Laura's is more whimsical. They compliment each other perfectly.
She's everything an English girl should be. Just perfect.
I saw Johnny Flyn at new adaptation of Emma, and thought what a brilliant actor and singer, why I have not heard of him? I immediately started to watch all his movies and listen to all his songs. He is brilliant.
Wow I didn’t know he could sing?! Are they together and was this 10 years about? Wow
I came here to find his music after hearing him in Emma as well. I knew when I heard him sing in the movie, with that voice and range he just HAD to be a musician 🎸 So beautiful, haunting at times, bit jaunty at others - but seriously just damn good!!! 👌 Forever a fan of JF now.
@@neneyg4041 the end credits played his song my queen bee
I found him through 'Detectorists' a short series by Mackenzie Crook (of Office fame).
Totally agree! I knew nothing about him before Emma. I hope that he becomes more famous in Brazil.
Once you've heard this it becomes part of your soul.
Bloody Hell, who are these people?! I thought I’d never hear good folk music again, outside of ‘60’s folk rock. This is wonderful!
I hope you've since dived into Laura Marling's discography, because there is a lot more of that and a whole lot more in general.
Listen to a band called this is the kit. They are a really good folk band imo

My brother drowned nearly 3 years ago and listening this song filling my eyes with tears and my heart with grief, that's why this beautiful song has a very special meaning for me. 🌿
I am so sorry for your loss x
@@lucyphillips4578 I appreciate you for your kindness
I'm so sorry for your loss. I relate to it for the same reason, my brother drowned in 2003. This song brings me comfort. Wishing you consolation, comfort & peace in your broken heart. May our 2 bros R.I.P.
@@qdee6250 I am sorry for your loss too. And seeing how we can relate to each other makes me feel like I am not lonely and it gives the comfort that you wish :)
You are not alone. You might get comfort on your most difficult days from the song ‘bright blue rose’ performed by Mary Black too. Best wishes. 🍃
In my opinion this song might be as close to perfection as it's possible to get. The harmonies are truly haunting. For me this is 'the' version.
Completely agree!
me too!
this made me want to live
that escalated quickly
Wait.. You dead bro?
I don't know why or how I wrote that comment. Probably intoxicated
I’m glad. Hold onto that feeling.
Chachi Yeti either way, I feel you
there something about scars and imperfections that makes a person look so human, his scars makes him look real and that hes not invincible. such a lovely human being.
This song is a mystery for me, I came upon it while walking in the Camino of Santiago. A couple of enthusiastic girls sang it and played it in a ukulele as they walked. It felt right to be singing this tune while examining nature and oneself. Water isn't being created, nor destroyed, only transformed. The idea of change was hope while walking. To all of you out there, "Buen Camino!"
He is absolutely gorgeous
So is she
That scar under his eye...he’s dreamy for sure
@@pbelancsik I find scars very sexy as well.
It is rare that i admire the beauty of another man but he is just archetypal.
Yes, he is!!!
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever listened to and I'm 50 years old. So, thank you for so much.
This is my favourite song
What a romantic song !
I'm 47 man. French. Carpenter (dumb working class). But that's the first thought that came to my mind : How romantic is this song ! Aren't they so beautiful, so pure ! I am falling in love for Laura Marling…and for Johnny Flynn too !
Don't put yourself down
carpenters are the best kind of people
In the USA a good carpenter is rare and I view them as artist
Working class, honest sweat, calloused hands are all good. After all, Jesus did the same and it didn't hurt his reputation.😊
The Working class is not dumb, comrade.
This song has been a great support for me in the past 4 months. It has such a wise old soul, it's hard to imagine it's been around for such a short period of time. Thank you Johnny, best wishes from Ukraine.
Take care! Best wishes from Warszawa
Best wishes from Scotland 🏴 ✌️

+Abdullah Rafi thanks
+Abdullah Rafi Yes, Thanks!!
why are the most popular comments the ones that quote the lines
Abdullah Rafi thank you
The Screen Time because, contrary to what the media would have us believe, people are basically pretty nice, and like to show their gratitude that someone has gone to the effort of transcribing the lyrics.
I found this song by watching a sweet knitted frog frolicking by a creek on tiktok and now I'm a fan. What a breathtakingly sad, hopeful, beautiful song! It has the sound and the soul of a pre-war song -- in fact, I was expecting to find an artist who died decades ago.
This song is a gem. Absolutely perfect.
Why do we not hear more of this kind of stuff in the mainstream charts, and therefore on the radios etc? These two have got more natural raw talent than pretty much everyone currently in the so called top 100 charts combined!
...I agree. Pandora's Box when trying to fathom the actions of the music industry...I think we know the main factors at play though. Very sad that the most open-minded & appreciative music lovers have to forage for beautiful creations like this though.....but maybe that ultimately adds even more to its beauty once found.
Oh man, this is what I think virtually every day. It's so refreshing to hear you say the same
The good stuff like this never makes the charts
Because this stuff is very, very special, And it is reserved for special people
The reason is that the song has content. Chart music is vacuous.
I can't explain what just happened to me with this song. I heard it for the first time and found myself singing along with it like I had sung it many times before. It felt so familiar and so necessary right now as if my heart had cried out for it to be written.
The mysterious power of music! How beautiful!!
I fell in love with him at "Emma" and started googling about him. This song is the first videos of him that I watched after Emma, and I fall in love with him again everytime I listen to this song.
I've listened to this song ten times in a row, now. How is it that it gets better every time? How is that even possible?
Yes it's alive!
This is so beautiful its almost painful... I have no more words...
Christina Suarez same
Agree...
It's funny, I like the simplicity of this performance much more than the actual album version. I feel like here the lyrics resonate so much more.
Totally agree.
Yes. It's raw & real...& ripe.
I was looking for the artist who created "Queen Bee" and ended up here. To all you amazing people who were lucky enough to enjoy Johnny's music for years - 👏🙌🙏💞♥️
I've been listening to this for 10 years and it never loses it's magic
I am overwhelmed by the amount of beauty there is in this world.
The Detectorist brought me here to find this little treasure, pure gold.
Same here ... a great series for an ex-pat stuck in amerika 😱

Don't despair!
Ha was just saying the same thing, wish I didn't.
+Geoffrey Mackrill The Detectorists, a unifying force for good. Good music for sure.
+Geoffrey Mackrill Exactly. Me too
angels - singing this with my son on the guitar thanks to you both
That ‘cool’ at the end. The cutest thing ever.
This song, their voices together.. that's what I call perfection.
Laura Marling's voice is so beautiful, she's masterful in her performance
She did a good Rusalka song i think
@@parkinglotsofhell I've never heard it..
@@withoutme1918 it wasn’t Rusalka! It was Undine! I get my sirens mixed up sometimes lol
Just discovering this song, love it so much. Something as simple as a song can set the world right for a little while, thank you. One of the greatest folk songs ever to be written right here folks.
I'm just hearing this for the first time, too, and I so agree with your comments. It does seem this music can just wash over you and bring things into perspective for a moment.
This is the song that has come into my mind as I mourn all those poor souls who drowned in the Mediterranean last week.
The garden is a perfect reflection of the song; if only I were raining on that day. However on this day it is raining for you in my family's garden.
They look like two shy teenagers who secretly like each other :) Beautiful song... Listening to it third day on repeat
This song is such a part of my grief process. I miss and love you always son 6/20/18.
I feel the same about this song and about my son whose passing was June 2012. Peace to you.

So very sorry for your loss.
@@L_Martin TY. I appreciate it.
A good friend passed away on the 8th of June the same year - the song holds a similar place for me. I'm sorry for your loss
Currently listening to this in lockdown, it's so beautiful.... And it helps me sleep at night right now :)
I'm grateful because I have my family and a roof over my head but at the same time I miss my friends so much. The days seem to just be merging into one big day, hopefully this is all over soon.
Sending love and prayers to everyone
This has been my lockdown tune too, it makes rainy days soft and sunny days more brilliant, I think. Hope you're staying safe and healthy!
Big Love back to you ❤
Same, I'm listening to this alot too

this song grounds me and helps me feel genuinely able to be honest in life
This song is so lyrically rich and poignant. Thank you for this wonderful piece of art!
This will be my future child's lullaby. So melancholic, hopeful and tender.
Can just imagine this in a Wes Anderson film
ditto
yessss
Omg yes
Its actually in a movie called un anour du jeunesse, i dont think i spelled that right but im sure you’ll be able to find it if you google it, its my favorite movie
Exactly
Soooooo beautiful. The voices together with that music is just so unbelievable!!!
This song is nearly spiritual to listen to.
10 years too late but I am here crying in awe of such a beautiful song
Played this for my pups burial this morning.
Thank you jonny and Laura ❤
Sorry for your loss.
10 years ago. From here the world seemed easier then, but wasn't really.
this song is so calming. always good when music makes you feel something.
This song is about the beautiful life I have after leaving abuse
:-) these are some of the most beautiful lyrics I’ve ever heard
Xx
This song actually brought me a tear... my mom passed away and I picture her feeling like this song... It a a beautiful song sung by beautiful people
I'm sorry. She's still here in you. Stay strong.
such a beautiful sweet song. Laura brought me here, thank you.
I listen to this when I want to remember someone who was supposed to be a friend, but ended up being an accessory to the end of a marriage.
To anyone reading this, live life selflessly, and you will live without regret. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that.
Thank you.
Betrayal happens only with those you know and it is devastating. I’ve been there (under the similar circumstances you mention).
Your words of wisdom for living well resonate; it’s been my strategy all along. Sometimes bad things happen and the lessons about them and you, too, can create much sadness and despair AND growth.
I’m 7 years out now and working to balance cynicism with hope.
listened to this 9 years ago. forgot about it. remembered it tonight after watching emma. you got it johnny.
Their voices and the guitar = TRIPLE PERFECT ! ! !
Brought here by French movie, "Goodbye, First Love"... (A profound MASTERPIECE)... AND I HAD TO GOOGLE THIS!!!!! WOWOOOWW
I AM GOING TO PAINT TO THIS SONG.. IT MOVES ME THAT MUCH...
So old and still one of my favourites. I wish they would have done more together...
the combination of their voices is absolutely sublime
This song makes death feel softer.
Perfectly stated
Very good! Poetry.
this has been on repeat on my playlist since....2010. It's just that good.
Going through a rough time, family and life. Just been listening to this over and over. Here is to life. Remember it keeps flowing. No matter what. Thank you for this and I hope to see more!
❤️
Same, hope everything get's better with you
Amen to that! Just keep flowing. Here's to life.
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever. ❤
Beauty can be so simple. Two voices, one guitar, that's all.
Just watched "Song One" with Anne Hathaway and Johnny Flynn. Great movie and alot of moving music sung by Johnny. This guy is the real deal.
Johnny looks and is so much like my dad. Come back here just to watch him sing feels like a lullaby.
I've been a Marling fan since day one, but this duet is a wonderful revelation to me. Exquisite!!!
Its like a pointillism painting, contrasting colours creating a new colour
Y'all's rendition of this song gives me so much peace. I'm listening to it now right before an audition to help center myself. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the rest of us.
Hope it went well.
Was just looking for the original thinking it was a 100+ year old song.
It sounds like a song that has passed down many generations.
still my favorite song to date. something about the combination of their voices and just how beautiful this song is lyrically. just gorgeous.

This is so beautiful and your voices blend perfectly. It's taken me 13 years to find this song. Why isn't music as good as this not played on the radio? Thank goodness for UA-cam where we can find the music we love and listen to it.
I am old and can never understand present day so called music- where singers need to bare all to cover their lack of talent. This duet is what music is meant to be- gave me goosebumps. Loved his detectorist theme song too- stunning.
Just discovered this guy.....beautiful words and sound x
Absolutely mesmerizing talent and their harmony is brilliant. I wish we could hear more like this in mainstream music!
They seriously need to make a full album together.
This should be available in HD!
The most beautiful song. I keep this song close to my heart.
this is one song I'll carry to the rest of my life.
i want this played at my funeral lol
But can't promise you will hear it
That's really not funny...
Between the two voices there are some parallel fifths which are simply FANTASTIC, I loved this version since the first notes... *___*
can't stop coming back to this vid, can see 'im not alone
I remember watching this when it seemed to only have a few thousand views for a while, nice to see it's not been hidden. Lovely song.
you're soooooo cool
I love this song, and I hope to have it played at my funeral. A simple song for a simple life.
This song will never die
Used to listen to this religiously in school. Thankfully just stumbled upon it again.
The most beautiful song, exquisitely performed. Your music should be streaming to the world right now, Johnny, a ray of sunlight in these dark times.
Interesting he's playing a doblo for an English 'folk' song. just goes to show you that British (including Irish) folk songs and Bluegrass are one and the same.
One of the best duets i know
I've loved this song for years!! And today while watching Emma I went "wait a second.... That voice is sO familiar!" Funny coincidences in life. It's a great song but their voices are just so beautiful
I accidentally made my way here because I had been trying to find out who played viola in the globe theaters twelfth night ( it's Johnny Flynn) so I found he was a singer and needed to here him and I'm so happy I did!
They flipped genders?! How cool is that! Where can I find this production?
Just found Johnny Flynn - and love the material he sings. Seriously beautiful.
I’m new to Johnny Flynn and am completely obsessed. Such talent ❤️❤️
I’ve never heard anything so beautiful.
Beautiful harmony's & it's just great
I shall play this song again and again
It's soothing. It makes me feel childlike and sleepy. I like it very much.
This song means so much to me, I could cry!
No ego, just beautiful music.
Experienced this as a graceful beautiful and brought peace to the parts of my amygdala which in a constant state of alarm currently
Sheer beauty
"the artist has run out of pain" line gets me everytime
“Paint” :) though ‘pain’ works as well
