One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. So comforting and peaceful. When I’m feeling down I watch Detectorists as it’s my happy place.
That's how I felt too, it is so gentle and understated.
Season one of the Detectorists is like a glimpse into a Winnie the Pooh world, and I mean that as a great compliment.
@@stevehazell1060 The Wind in the Willows too. English rural life ftw
I felt exactly the same feeling from watching it. Very calm and relaxing to watch .
Watching the 2022 Christmas special right now :D
Such a haunting verse with beautiful chords. Simple and lovely -- like life and death, the British countryside, and the show Detectorists.
You don't get to use this adjective in a positive way too often, but this song is Haunting. Just brilliant.
Has to be--made to measure the TV story theme
this guy is fcking LEGIT. big fan.
I love this song and the show. Started watching the show again yesterday - it's the perfect antidote to Covid anxiety. Just charming, funny and sunny.
Makes me proud to be a detectorist 😁
classy and original !
marvelous
Toby is genius!
I really wish this series could have gone on and on it was wonderful, warm, quiet unassuming English humour, all the characters were brilliantly executed by the actors and this song is so haunting, bravo.
It really was perfect. I was sad when it finished but maybe things should be admired as they are, and unspoiled
Apparently a new special out this year, possible at xmas (2022)
@@stevepettifer4896 It will be on BBC Two on Boxing Day. It will be a single 75 minute episode.
It was amazing.. better than I expected! Such a fitting end to the series
No it's perfect as it is. Less is more.
Couldn't be more perfect.
I loved the programme.
I love the song.
It evokes in me sadness, nostalgia, longing and grief for times past.
So, so beautiful
Oh god, all that
The combination of this song and the beauty of detectorists makes me feel so warm inside.
stumbled upon this show. one of my favorites in years. so sweet and heartbreaking.
You won't feel so warm inside when you know Mackenzie stole the idea from a youtuber :( Look up The Detectorist | Short Film by Jonathon Blagrove posted in 2010. The tv series was made in 2013.
you took the words right out of my mouth - best theme song ever and best show ever
same.
i couldnt articulate it as well though
Makes me tear up - have told my daughter I want this at my funeral
Excellent show. It was so beautifully English.
Perfect song for a perfect series.
Kinda makes you want to be in a quiet old English village on a warm summer day sat outside of a good real ale pub slowly downing a pint of best bitter. Bliss.
Makes me want to move back to England so badly
Totally agree
Yes, even more so now
I think that's where he recorded it, by the look of things
you are absolutely right.
It is so awesome to see so many comments with praise for The Detectorists, to know that others see what I see/saw in it. It is absolutely brilliant, the lines, the stories, the characters - Andy & Lance, Becky, Terry & Sheila, the group - Russell, Hugh, OMG - I love them with all of my heart. There will never be anything like it ever again. Mackenzie Crook is a genius.
I walked up the aisle at my wedding to this song. A joint decision with my husband to be at the time , we both love this song.
That's so lovely 💞
And it will be the last one played at my funeral bash!!
We had it as our first dance!!
Johnny is a genius. Detectorists is genius. I'm glad I've lived to hear this.
me too
Some things can't be bought... :)
me too.
It is perfect!
These guys are two a penny here in Ireland, the kind of guy your younger sister would bring back to your tent at a festival
best show ever. myself and my partner and our 3 small children bonded over this show and the music. my daughter can sing this song pitch perfect and shes 5. melts my heart. i have so much admiration for every person involved in the process of this show and this gorgeous soundtrack.
Me and my son bonded over the show as well, and at the time he was only nine. I wonder what it is about the show that does that?
See University Challenge last night?
+Michael Screen Yeah, what ya got,,,?

no, I can't turn on the TV

+Michael Screen Nah, I was down at the White Horse telling Paul to SHUT UP!
+Mo Lester 😂 that Shit was too funny how off key you where
I've really enjoyed reading other comments on this one that have also been captured by the same feelings of nostalgia, melancholy, beauty that this song and series evoke. As i described the series to a friend "it has made me feel home sick for a place ive never been." A wonderful series
I thought it was just me who felt this way….I’ve found a hone in these comments
Me too. Such lovely comments. I get choked up every single time I hear this song. The programme is such a joy. Thank you to all involved.
Nicely put. I think "fernweh" is a word for this feeling
@@crunchysaviourgreat observation……the notion of an outward longing to a faraway place ,the desire to journey somewhere and arrive perhaps at the place where we came from…..to rediscover ourself………please excuse me becoming deep and meaningless 🙏
If this song doesn't stir up something inside you and make you wanna go dig some holes you should just sell your detector right now. hoping for at least a season 3
You need to move to Scotland or Ireland! :-)
Season three confirmed
www.radiotimes.com/news/2016-12-22/toby-jones-hints-at-detectorists-series-three-plans
I live in The States, but this certainly stirs a great deal of flotsam and jetsom for me. Have you ever seen "A Field in England"?
Just watched first episode of Season 3 woo hoo!!
You don't need the degree, that will just turn you into a middle class knowall. The passion will be from communing with your ancestors, the rest is bullshit.
The most beautiful song in the world for the most beautiful show in the world. This song was the perfect song for my father’s funeral.
As a viewer from across the pond, I have to say, The Detectorists is one of the best shows I've ever watched, both on American and British tv. I do not understand why it ended after only three seasons. Can anyone in the UK enlighten me? I love it so much I rewatch it all the time. What a talent in Mackenzie Crook.
in the UK, our best comedies only ran for a few series, so they dont go stale and people begin to hate them. Look at fawlty towers (only 13 episodes i believe), the UK office (couple of series and xmas special). I much prefer it, instead of pumping out episode after episode, the show retains that special quality.
End the show with the audience wanting more, ... like George Best, Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe & Elvis .... The Detectorists have left the Building 🙁
Isn't it just , absolutely love it . Apart from the series there is a 75 minute special which was absolutely brilliant that aired on the BBC in December 2022 , just in case you never saw that one :)
I put off watching Detectorists for ages,no particular reason I just didn’t get around to it but when I did my God have I fallen in love with it,head over heels and completely besotted,Mackenzie Crook called the program a love song to the English countryside and to people and their pastimes, what beautiful words so if you haven’t seen it do yourself a massive favour and give it a watch.❤
Same here; had never heard of it and started watching it last night with my daughter. Couldn’t stop. So beautifully filmed. Definitely a tribute to the English countryside. And the theme song is just something else. I just love it all. Can’t wait to start series 3 tomorrow ❤
When I started watching The Detectorists I thought it would be just another lame unfunny modern BBC sitcom ticking all the usual boxes for diversity etc. Instead I got a bittersweet, occasionally hilarious and always amusing, well written, well acted comedy with a great theme song that somehow encapsulates the lyrical beauty of the English countryside and its history that is such a big part of the show.
It's one of the best british comedy of this generation with a glorious ending .
It's a bittersweet and pastoral series with a perfect mix of humour and pathos. Feel like it was made for me.
Absolutely 👍
Watching this show is like chatting with an old friend. Comfortable, easy, and a much welcomed break from every day life. It's beautifully, skillfully done.
it's magic - the oldest kind
From an actual detectorist viewpoint , this song perfectly portrays the emotions of being there alone , in the middle of a 40acre field/pasture , hearing that birdsong , searching through the briar and bramble , waiting for 'you' ( the magical sound of a target ) ....... 🎵 will you be my treasure?🎵.
Wow, I never actually thought of this song being from that perspective, what a wonderful revelation! Thank you
Totally agree with you there.
I have watched Detectorists several times and still love it.
Lyrics to the song
Will you search through the loamy earth for me
Climb through the briar and bramble
I'll be your treasure
I felt the touch of the kings and the breath of the wind
I knew the call of all the song birds
They sang all the wrong words
I'm waiting for you, I'm waiting for you
(Mmmmmm)
Will you swim through the briny sea for me
Roll along the ocean's floor
I'll be your treasure
I'm with the ghosts of the men who can never sing again
There's a place follow me
Where a love lost at sea
Is waiting for you
Is waiting for you
Thank you! 🙂
it's definitely "lonely" not loamy
Loved detectorists when it first came out and can I just say thank you to this gem of a show. I watched it several times during covid lockdown. Sweet, innocent, and reminds me of how beautiful life is. Johnny Flynn’s song was and is perfect.
That's how I would describe it, a gem of a show, love the 2 guys friendship ❤️
The Detectorists was a perfect encapsulation of a kinder Great British value set than the current variants. Keenly observed and subtle depiction of the essence of these islands. Beautifully underplayed and scripted with such precision. I loved it.
My brother and I were Civil War relic hunters all through the 1960s and 1970 here in North Carolina. The "Detectorists" BBC series and this song have strung a chord in my heart as nothing has in many years. Thank you, Johnny Flynn, for transporting me back through the years.
American or English civil war>?
there were battles from the Revolution and Civil wars in North Carolina.. The battle of Bentonville NC was the largest land battle in North Carolina during the Civil War. It involved around 60-80 thousand troops, the battle last 3 days. and covered an area 6,000 acres.
@@markdavis2594 Guess
@@JdowgRocco Did you ever find anything?
Hundreds of buttons... both Union and Confederate. Thousands of rounds of ammunition... almost exclusively around Goldsboro, North Carolina, which was a major rail function in the state, and also where General Sherman refitted after the Battle of Bentonville. All told, that is the reason we found so much material from both sides. My wife laughed and laughed about the boring "Button Talk" from the first episode of the series.
Just found the "Detectorists" on my Netflix. Liked this song right away and had to come find it. Thanks a lot.
The Detectorists is our favorite series ever---and this theme song is a significant part of that.
I actually had tears in my eyes when Lance found the treasure, pure magic
Lovely song on its own but also a perfect fit for the show
The best songwriter of this generation. He's a truly gifted musician, actor and poet - a true bard and absolutely gorgeous and humble to boot - what's not to love?

Johnny Flynn is a genius. Detectorists is genius.
Amen to that!! 🙌
I love everyone’s comments. Each of us had a special relationship with this show and the song captures the feeling beautifully.
Someone mentioned that when people try to cover the song they usually get some of the lyrics wrong. I noticed that the captioning gets some wrong, so that can't be helping! 😂
This song and it's execution by Johnny is nothing short of perfection
I watched season 1 and 2 for a third time and just saw season 3 on Acorn TV. It’s my favorite show ever and just got my first metal detector yesterday. I’m now a detectorist! The song is as warm as the characters.

Absolutely love this song. Had me in tears. The most beautiful song I've ever heard.
Me too. It breaks my heart but I love it so much 💕
Me too, tears in my eyes. I miss live folk music.🥰
Is this song the most beautiful ever? It's a contender, at least.
Moments like this remind me that the human race is capable of such beautiful things.
This song is bliss and happiness. Perfect lyrics and singer for a unique and wonderful and feel-good show.Thank you Mackenzie Crook and Johnny Flynn.
Just handed in my resignation letter to the boss. I'm starting metal detecting full-time. Wish me luck!
Its waiting for you...
Good luck!
A TV show like that can be life-changing for some.
Don’t forget t take your invisible dog!
How did you get on?
I too left my old self behind.
Just watched Detectorists back to back......... absolutely loved it. There was something soothing about it and just a lovely watch and this song which is also soothing fits the series like a glove 👌🏾
As i listen i get lost in this world he creates with his mesmeric voice and guitar. Not heard anything as comforting for a long time.
Absolutely love this song and the detectorists….they fit together so comfortably….I have absorbed every episode more than once and the gently comedy and the life stories intertwined are magic to watch….very cleverly written and all accolades so well deserved.
It’s a lovely and haunting song that fit perfectly with the themes of the show.
I am so happy to have discovered this singer. I love his voice and his wonderful music. I first heard him on Digging for Britain. Coins for the eyes. He is fabulous. I am addicted.
Great when he pops up at the open mic night in the first series. Nice tune.
Favorite modern folk singer. Ever.
best recent artist of all-time you could say
I keep waiting for Radio 3 to play him.@@alexandrahopkinson1748
This one makes me cry every time, makes me miss my loved ones that are no longer here with me. Yet, I love to hear it. Loved the series so much.
Perfect music for a show like this. Love it! (both the series and the music)
This song is one of my favorites. When I'm out detecting I can hear it over and over while I'm swinging. :)
You and me both. I was humming it today out in a 40 acre field.
Same here. Found nothing but canslaw all morning.
Don't tell me you missed the red arrows as well!
Dear producer, director and actor, please shoot a sequel to this fantastically beautiful and funny series "Detectorists"! It is the best series on television that I have ever seen, even if it was only shown on Arte with translated subtitles for German television and can be seen in the media library there until October. Perhaps it would also be dubbed linguistically by a German, I think it would be able to achieve a good success with us in Germany. Although I love the original English language version very much, because the voices and the actors are just wonderful. In all honesty, "Detectorists" is really great, please please shoot more of it, the audience will thank you! Especially now in the gloomy Corana times ,detectorits is simply a bright light in the television sky, and probably brings many people to start with this wonderful hobby. I've been looking for my detector myself since 2012, it helps me to understand nature better every day and has helped me a lot in coping with the grief of my wife who passed away too early. Please let this series live again, people will thank you.
God bless you, @Martinuschka Unbekannt - I hope the passing of the years is bringing you peace...
@@LittleNoiseBoyThank you - same for you too 😊🍀
Like everyone who has watched the Detectorists, I love it. It's my go to show when I need cheering up or any other reason. I was gutted when it ended and I'm still in denial. I would love to see it continue and this song really captures the essence of the show and England, especially Saxon England.
I always worry for this guy. Hope he’s ok. 🙏
merci pour ce pur moment de douceur, je ne me lasse pas de vous écouter.
Love the song, the playing, the singing. The more I hear it, the more I love it. Love the Detectorists and the way it blends the relationships, struggles and interests of the community of people with nature and history. As others say, it's perfect.
Music like this makes me feel like I have a soul
And you do.
One of my favourite series on TV. Class from every angle, cast choice, acting and of course this theme tune. Absolutely love it.
Been years since I heard this, I forgot how beautiful it is. It’s like digging up lost treasure that you had buried in your mind.
That's a perfect sentiment 👌
I'm nearly 60 and I have watched hundreds of British sit coms in my time. The Detectorists show, together with this wonderful theme tune, is my current no 1 of all time. All I will say is that it's going to take one hell of a show to beat this. With Mackenzie selling the TR7 chances are there will not be another episode made. I'm gutted beyond belief. Leave them wanting more I guess.
This song plays such a huge part in making the series what it is

Beautiful song and perfectly sung by Johnny Flynn. I wish the Detectorists series could have continued for another 10!! ❤
Found "Detectorists" on Acorn TV. Binged watched this treasure of a show..which brought me here to this treasure of a song. IMHO...Johnny Flynn is quite impressive. This song is addicting as was the show. I just saw that there is going to be a third season and I am hoping that there will be a new verse added to the song? I haven't stopped listening to it ..I want more! I also want a dectector..always have ..and now even more.
The line is actually, "loamy earth" and not, "lonely earth" as I have seen people suggest. Beautiful song!
Yes Filchmeister !
Even hums with such expression in his voice.
Loamy is a great English word.😊
This song, the series, the beautiful English countryside and real people surely make this the real treasure.
I love this song and the way he sings it. I also loved the show. I hope they do more of them.
Real talent. Great lyrics. No Auto-tune. What's not to like?

Same here, just found it. Better than any medication. Just makes life better and soul feel comforted. Enjoy 🤗
Coolest lad in the world singing the coolest song from the coolest TV series.
Cool
He's a friend of Mackenzie Crook which is how he ended up writing the theme song, this is from an interview he did with the Radio TImes:
You composed the music for the Bafta-winning Detectorists. How did you get that gig?
I was talking to my friend Mackenzie Crook, who I'd done a play with [Jerusalem], for a long time about this show he was developing and writing. He always said, "I want you to write the music for it." Detectorists is totally from his heart and his persona - it's very much him. He's kind of a little bit like his character in it, which is really sweet.
This song and the show are like a warm hug ❤️
