- Brain tumor survivor Robert Alvarez and neurosurgeon Sujit Prabhu, M.D., explain why and how Robert played the guitar during his surgery for a grade II astrocytoma. It was the first time a brain tumor patient played a musical instrument during an awake craniotomy at MD Anderson.

@@mdanderson Thank you! Mine wasn’t for cancer although I did survive end stage four cancer 13+ years ago. Mine was Deep Brain Stimulation for Essential Tremor in 2019 and it has worked remarkably well. I remember almost bursting in to tears during the surgery when I held my hand up and it was still. I had never experienced stillness before. As someone on the team said several months later in response to my absolute gratefulness, “stillness is a beautiful thing”.

it would seem weird but you have to have some trust in the people who are gonna work on your brain, would you rather be awake while doing something to indicate to the doctors that they arent screwing things up or would you go under anesthesia and most likely get paralyzed?
This is oddly beautiful. I hope this guy is doing well. The surgeons are artists and gods. God bless everyone.

@@sciencebeing6134 I know.
Theirs actually research that says the heart mimics music once it’s heard for example your heart will start to speed up to imitate the base of that sound doesn’t necessarily mean music comes from the heart but it’s something cool to think about dunno just sayin.

My dad works for a hospice so he sees a lot of old people usually with Alzheimer’s, and this one man could barely remember where he was or who his kids were but could always play his guitar and sing songs word for word
That’s actually a really good thing about dementia and Alzheimer’s is where the memory of music is stored is not in the same place where the brain gets damaged
Oftentimes alzheimer's patients' last memory is of their favorite song and late-stage dementia patients can often be heard obsessively humming a line or two from their favorite song
i’ve heard that music makes the strongest memory ties in the brain, so ppl with memory loss will often be able to remember songs really well. it’s so very interesting to me
My grandmother was the same, she couldn't remember any of her children or grandchildren at the end, but whenever I played her favorite piano pieces she came back to us for a little while. It was such a beautiful thing to see. For some reason Alzheimer's just doesn't damage the parts of our brain that process music. Years later I ran a music therapy program at a memory care hospice center; it was so amazing to see how music could temporarily alleviate the anxiety, distress, and confusion the residents had to suffer through every day in a way medication couldn't
Music is actually being studied as a way to help slow or maybe even reverse long term damage due to Alzheimer's. Very interesting stuff
Hats off to surgeon and his team who operated him with zero distraction.

A lot of surgeons play music during operations but the patient is usually NOT awake
Your telling me this dudes head is opened, and just so he doesnt lose His ability to move and muscle memory, he plays a guitar while his brain is out in the open, ok then.
Lol do ur research
Also, if the guy suddenly stops or shudders or something, anything out of the ordinary guitar playing and the doctors get to know immediately that they're doing something wrong
The brain is divided into many parts that control many functions and the doctor himself said that the patient wants to keep his dexterity function so they stayed away from that part and focused on keeping that part safe while removing the tumor.
Yes that is what they are telling you
I Commented there are no sensory neurones in the brain so usually brain surgery is done while the patient is fully conscious.
Your incredible person so strong to have went through an operation that huge awake and playing the guitar

This really hits home for me. It combines two of the most special things in my life. My Aunt was diagnosed with a brain tumor 23 years ago, and it was cancerous. She went through multiple surgeries, and I got to spend a wonderful 12 years of my life with her. She passed away in March of this year. But something that always sticks with me is how supportive she was. She showed me her guitar when I was seven, and she was the one who made me realize that this was it. Music was my passion. She was so encouraging with it.
Did she still die of cancer or did she die of other causes? Im scared

I think it’s amazing and it also is a stress relief because they’re awake but they’re comfortable doing something they are truly passionate about, which is so relaxing instead of coming out of a sleep and then all of a sudden you feel pain and then you have to ask what happened what went on and I think this is amazing thing maybe not for all things but for this type of surgery I think that’s a wonderful thing that they gave him a guitar and everything went beautifully
