Mitch McConnell Won't See Your Posts, But Your Disabled Friends Will | Ableism in Progressive Spaces

  • I've noticed a lot of ableist discourse in progressive spaces recently regarding Mitch McConnell's public freezing episodes. While I do not like Mitch McConnell or feel any sympathy towards him, the way we talk about public figures' mental and physical health is indicative of how we see disabled people. Every time I see a "friend" post about these things, I question if that's how they secretly view me.

As soon as there’s a chance for people to feel justified in being ableist non-disabled people will take it

I think you have an important take on this, i.e., "people can weaponize your disability the moment they have an issue with you"
Agreed, Mitch McConnell is still the worst. Thanks for sharing!

This is a good video. I do think we need term limits, but mainly because I think it would be more fair to let younger people have a chance at serving in congress and not having the same people in that position for decades and have more diverse perspectives.

The ones who frame it as him having to work at his age and disability are especially paternalistic. Besides diagnosing someone they've never met, he makes the decision to run again every 6 years. And it's not because he won't have an income otherwise.
Dragging him through the mud for being evil without being ableist isn't hard at all. It makes it easier to stay on topic, even

I read it as Post Concussion symptoms...I think he should be removed from office because he's been there long enough that his political choices have helped kill millions, not because of his age or ability... Becoming recently disabled really challenged my own ableism and showed me who my friends are and aren't. Thank you for this reminder.

He’s completely unqualified to do his job. He’s unqualified to be making the laws he’s making that negatively impact disabled ppl.

Good video Erica, you' are highlighting an important aspect of ableism that I hadn't thought of.

I asked my non-disabled girlfriend her thoughts (I’m autistic and have very black and white thinking and interpreting stuff can confuse me) and she says she thinks it’s a parody of how people remark on Biden’s age and fighting dirty and doing the same thing for the other party. But we both agree the insults (like how Biden trips or stumbles over his words or how Mitch blanks are being weaponised in an ableist way)
she said it’s a mud slinging fight

I really appreciate the nuance in your take on this. It is absolutely right to take issue with his policies, but also absolutely not right to criticise him thru the lense of ableism. It’s his policies that are the problem, not his health situation. Simarly, as much as I think de Santis is a clear and present danger, it is not helpful to critique his awkwardness. It’s not being awkward that is a problem, it’s being a fash hist!!!

"capacity" is a very nebulous concept which is wholly irrelevant to expressive language use or delay

I agree, no one deserves ableism, even if they have terrible political ideologies and you are right, it reflects all people with disabilities.
I don’t think anyone deserves prejudice and discrimination; even if they’re a shitty person.

Absence seizures are ones where someone looks like they are looking off into space or not paying attention instead of the seizure symptoms that people classically think of that are a part of grand mal seizures. If someone has absence seizures it can be missed for years because people think that they are just distracted or day dreaming.

I wish the post was framed more along the lens of - this man is having health complications that do and may disable him temporarily or permanently, and yet he gets to remain working a job where he prevents the average disabled and chronically ill American from accessing the healthcare and other resources they need to participate in society as they please. HE gets the choice, the money, the aid - and makes sure nobody else does. A bloodsucking leech. I'd rather an actual leech in office, because they're just trying to eat. lol. He and most people in the government take food off of everyone else's table. It's the same with Greg Abbott in TX. Uses his disability to get pity points while stripping basic rights from everyone else, especially disabled, elderly, and chronically ill people, because he's always had the money and privilege to pay for the healthcare he needs or have his needs subsidized by the taxpayers that can't even feed their families.

This!!! Mitch is in my top 5 least favorite people alive, and it still makes me cringe to hear people go ableist over his health problems.

I think politicians should be held to the same standards as a regular working citizen the retirement age should be 60 if not lower.

i wish i would be able to retire at 60 or sooner, oh my gosh! are you in america? pretty sure the vast majority of americans can't retire at 60, you can't even get ANY social security retirement benefits until you're 62, full retirement age is currently 67 for people born in the 60s or later

@@iamnobody2 yes, I am from America OK you made your point but I think my point still stands as I believe Mitch McConnell is like 88 years old. I don’t think people in their 80s should be running the government so that was the point that I was trying to make. and yes, that goes for Joe Biden as well.

Just asking, this seems to be a new condition if I can call it that. Shouldn't he be more closely watched or more intensely tested by his doctors before returning to work? I could be very wrong but it seems concerning just as a fellow human.

I think the point is that regardless of whether he has a disability or medical condition, it’s none of our business and we should focus on his politics and actions. By focusing on the disability, even out of concern, that’s a form of ableism. The part about wanting him to get tested or that he should do this or that is paternalism, which is like saying that he’s not capable of making those decisions or taking care of himself

I have seen a lot of “progressive” people use stigmatized disorders as insults, calling people narcissistic instead of selfish and such, it always makes me upset when I see people do this, especially if I generally like their content.

interesting video and points... i don't know disability issues much at all, but what if our president was doing the same thing mitch did and did it at a point where a spit second decision is necessary? i don't think i'm ablelist, but perhaps i'm ageist because i really am tired of all these old out of touch people like mitch, biden, trump, feinstein lording over america. also, sitting here i was just wondering if biden hadn't been able to mostly contain his stutter if it would be ableist to be concerned about his ability to communicate masterfully with his constituents, our allies, etc, we do need high level politicans to be able to effectively clearly communicate, i dunno. i don't love biden, he's exceeded my frankly very low expectations but he's still a capitalist... anyway, i try not to be terrible, and i try to be open to listening,

My best friend has a stutter and is a professor. You can have a stutter and communicate masterfully. There are cases of trauma or even age making an already existing stutter become more prominent. Yes - it's bigoted to believe someone cannot masterfully communicate because of a disability.
