I’ve completed 7 hard track days in the heat here in Miami and my car has been amazingly reliable. My FL5 is all stock except for Castrol SRF fluid and Project MU pads. I would recommend to do the pedal dance before each session to deactivate the VSA completely, also remove the under-hood rain guard panel.
I’ve watched your vids in Miami, gives me hope the FL5 addressed the overheating issues. The FIRM is a tough track with few straightaways to cool anything down, super tough on breaking systems
Hey Elias, got your question this time. Only changing the fluid in the container and not flooding the original out may not have been the best thing, boiling point and chemistry maybe? But overall it holds out so well. Happy you found the FWD fun again.
Sweet you tracked it 👍. I have one too been doing the same. Currently have koyo rad, prl fmic, hasport mount, eibach rsb, more camber, srf, and track pads
Love the video and all your previous vids on the FK8. I own a 2017 FK8 which I got brand new in 2017 #224. I have done a few Auto Cross sessions at The FIRM and trying to muster some courage to do my first track day ever since my wife bought me a track day 😅 (She is my Daily). I have watch many of your videos on heat issues many and planning to cut my grill to a little bit more air flow. Do you think adding shims to my hood or removing rear weather strip will help also? Would you have kept your FK8 if it wasn’t for the heat issues?
Interesting video. Personally, im not seeing the issue with the factory pads not being up-to-task for tracking. I've been tracking for 20 years now and I've never ran a track pad on my car when it wasn't on a track, nor would i wamt to. The car should have a brake pad designed specifically for daily driving and another set dedicated for tracking only. It would be like expecting an All-Season tire to be excellent for daily driving and at the track. Not possible. A reliable, great performing track pad like you seem to have expected this car to have come with will never be good for daily driving. Your video proved exactly what i was expecting and why ive always employed two sets of pads. Other than that, glad to see it out at the track!
I was expecting engine overheat vs brake overheat. I suspect you'd need traction control completely off to manage pads. (Requires a button click while in custom mode in my EN while TypeR may need song and dance)... This track looks nicer than your first track day in FL8 and looking forward to you putting new Type-R through the wringer.
Appreciate your thoughts, so far the engine hasn’t had any heating issues. The FIRM is very tough on brakes, since there’s little opportunity to cool them down
Before I see, this stock FL5 isn't good on a track day, I know a lot of videos on UA-cam and all Civics heated oil and the engine is weak... let me see your experience. (I think a GR Toyota Yaris or Corolla is a better one in stock mode)
Sweet ride! I've been out of the loop. Is that your new fl5? 😮 Also long time no see! 😎 I would of been curious to see how it would of performed with the stock fluid. What does the Castro fluid do to help with the breaking? I'm not to well informed on that.
welcome back! Yes, it's my new FL5 Type R! Castro SRF is a much higher temp brake fluid, won't start boiling when it gets a little hot like factory fluid. If your brake fluid boils, you lose the ability to brake.
@@FlyinGato oh wow, thank you for the knowledge. I will definitely keep that in mind. Beautiful car and awesome choice of color! I can’t wait to see more content on your new type r! I still remember when you got your fk8…time sure flys lol
The claim was that Honda made many improvements to cooling vs. the FK8. Does your one track day say anything about this claim or is it still too early to say?
Bummer on the check engine and the crap Go Pro.... mine crashes all the time and they suck, I'll never buy another. I love the red FL5 ... looks great.
Can you please tell me which mount you’re using for your radar detector? I had mine mounted to my mirror and hard wired in my fk8 and for the life of me can’t find one for the fl5
Interesting comments on the "fun" CTR vs "serious" ZLE. Do you think it's partially a seat time and comfort level thing? Also do you think an NA V8 SS 1LE would be more of a middle ground? I'll be living the FWD lifestyle for quite some time still, but just curious! Glad you're back 🍻
The ZLE is honestly too much car for the casual track day, it’s a monster, up there with the newer Porsche GT3s, a modified GTR and the fastest corvettes. I’ve also discovered I’m a FWD guy, I prefer trail braking like mad into a corner, and using the throttle to straighten out.
So you did not do a flush with SRF? I am going to the track in a couple weeks, going to do a flush and change to SRF and then front track pads. Will probably do rears later but keep stocks in the back for now.
Lol there is a french dude who basically lives on the nurburgring and he took some dudes heavily modded fl5 and had it overheating and basically shutting down after like 2 laps of serious tracking.
I started adding what I use in the description, I’ll update all descriptions once I get home from Dominican Republic. I bought everything on Amazon, it was fairly easy.
Skills. People think they can just keep destroying the breaks and whatnot. They never watched a F1 race lmao. Things like conserve breaks, tires for launch laps. Oh well.
Why are you revving up between upshifts? Are you not lifting your foot all the way off the gas as an attempt at squeezing out more speed, or did a previous car have flat-foot upshifts (that this car doesn't have)? It's not going to help with speed much (if at all) and will absolutely kill your clutch prematurely since you're slipping it hard on every upshift under engine power. You should lift your foot all the way off the gas pedal before your clutch-in releases at the grab point, and then time your clutch-out to "catch" the revs as they drop to match the next higher gear, then back on throttle. If you time it right there should be no driveline shock, no head-bob, and no clutch slip/wear whatsoever. So much easier on the machine.
I'm glad you noticed that. I was not keeping my foot on the gas pedal at all between shifts, what you're noticing is a little bit of throttle lag, mostly there to reduce emissions.
@@FlyinGato Hmm, that doesn't look like rev hang. If you rewatch it, it's definitely revving up between upshifts (not just hanging), which definitely wouldn't be done for emissions reasons. It could be that you're lifting your foot but not all the way so the throttle is staying a little cracked. Definitely try to get your foot entirely off the throttle between shifts. Your clutch will thank you!
@@FlyinGato how would you compare the two? Track day, street driving, level of fun.. My home track is road america. Lots of straights and high speed which would definitely favor the ZLE, but the FL5 looks like so much more fun on the streets, as well as substantially cheaper consumables on track
I’m working on a comparison video, but they are very different experiences. The Type R is a riot, so much fun bouncing around and doing 4 wheel drifts. The ZLE means serious business, it doesn’t want to go slow, it needs to go as fast as possible all the time. If I had to choose one for mostly track duties and I don’t mind the increased costs I’d choose the ZLE, if I need an all rounder with lots of fun in mind, the Type R
@@FlyinGato subscribed for that. Currently have a couple of somewhat fun hondas and somewhat fun GM v8s, I can't decide which I'd like better if I had to choose. The hondas are cheap and very fun, but the simplicity and performance of a v8 is also very compelling + the sound. How much more expensive would you say a ZLE is for a track day or 2 over the FL5? Is it really that substantial?

What's the benefit of removing the rain guard? Just more air flow?

Yea I thought I could get away with it, at least it was worth a try, and we still did a bunch of laps!

I’m looking at getting more camber, and doing a spring update soon
Glad to see you back on track. Great video.
I’m glad to be back
Doing that to the brake fluid was definitely an idea that you NEVER should have had.
Gotta agree with you therr

Oh, and the SS 1LE is the performance car bargain of the century, I did a video on one, search for it on my channel

Yea don’t do what I did, do a full flush. I was lazy and stupid, only replaced the reservoir fluid, and it was a terrible idea
@@FlyinGato haha lets say you did it in the same of science :D but yeah SRF flush for me and brake pads and lets see how it do

Modern cars are simply to heavy and being Turbo really heats thing up!
I would be watching the Oil Temps!
Nice! What mount are you using for the detector? I can't find an adaptor for Blend Mount. Thanks in advance
Good question, looking for the same solution. Blend mount doesn’t make one for the CTR. Looks like he is running something similar.
I started adding what I use in the description, I’ll update all descriptions once I get home from Dominican Republic. I bought everything on Amazon, it was fairly easy.
Turn traction control off?
I’ll try that next, it’ll help the rears, but not really the fronts
Good thing you had the radar detector, could've gotten a bad ticket 😂
lol
Have had no issues with brakes on track days in hot weather - not sure what’s going on with your car

The Firm is very tough on brakes.
O fluido de freio teria a ver se houvesse fading mas nao foi isso que aconteceu. É a qualidade da pastilha stock
Yea the brake pads were definitely not up to snuff
Were you running tc on?
For the first few laps I was, I turned it off (not all the way) to try to save the brakes, it wasn’t enough
TC and VSC use the brakes. Here’s your primary problem. Turn the Nannie’s off, it’s FWD.
I put it in R mode and just hit the tc button, I’ll do the longer button press going forward
Honda civic type R 7:45 Nurburgring time.
I can't help myself but i really dislike how they integrated the hood on this car. No matter how i look at it, it always seems a bit off.

Thinking u can’t bring a stock car to a race track is crazy, definitely an fl5 type r lmao
brakes definitely needed to be replaced for sure.
Hey 👋🏿 Elias - those Brake pads didn’t do So good 😅😅👍🏿
Yea, and the FIRM is really tough on brakes, so it really shows any weakness in the braking system
don't clap this one.
No replacement for displacement
That’s why I still have my ZLE

hah! yea it's quite bouncy, I think it's overdamped in +R mode, I'll see if changing the springs does anything.
