I love how you own supercars, you have driven so many different types of dream cars but you are still having fun and appreciate this Type-R. This is a real car enthusiast
I’ve owned several Ferrari, Lambo, and Porsche GT cars, and my main daily driver is an FL5 Type R if that tells you something. It’s a fantastic drivers car and overall package.
I own a FK8 Type R and a 991.2 Porsche.
No one believes me when I tell them I prefer the Civic.
But I mean it. It is that good. And it makes a connection with my inner child.
@@diho7231 I have had or driven a decent amount of high dollar, high powered expensive cars and to this day one of my favorite cars was a Ford Focus RS, just great to drive.
I wish everyone had the capacity to buy their dream car. How I envy you, maybe in another life.
FL? Flamingo car? Never heard of that.
Honda shill
Trouble is £50'000 buys a massive amount of sports cars lightly used .
its more expensive then a low milage bmw F80 M3 in the Netherlands
@@tubejorrit sure but include warranty/motorplan, IDK if I agree - unless you are (or ur best mate is) a godly mechanic, probably not really more expensive to own over anything like 4,5,6 years + imo.
You'd get a nice second hand M2 for that
Surprises me anybody buys new cars these days, they're wildly expensive and depreciate like crazy. Think I'll be running my mk3 Focus RS I purchased new in 2017 for 32k for like another 10 years!
Everyone talking about BMW....good luck with maintenance....Honda > BMW when it comes to reliability
Everyone loves a hot hatch. We love Honda. Thank you Honda for working with Seen Through Glass to make great content. We want more of the civic type r and more collaborations. I have Always loved the type r. Hot hatch of the year award winner 2023. Yess
I have that exact car, glad you liked it as much as I do 😊
My previous car was a Golf R estate and I have to say I do miss the auto for daily driving around town, and the 4WD for winter. Means the Type R does not get used as much as the Golf did. So I can see why people are favouring that formula, especially if it’s your one and only car.
But the Type R wins hands down for fun, engagement and feeling ‘special’ when I get out of town.
I just sold a gt350 and recently drove a GTI as a rental and loved it. I'm torn between golf R and Type R right now. I'm looking for that one do it all car . What's your advice?
@@brettlarbus3970 It’s a tough call!! They can both do it all, but in different ways!!
There is no doubt the Golf R is the better all-round daily car. The automatic gearbox is better for around town, the all wheel drive is great for rain and snow, it has more compliant suspension. In real world conditions you will get from A to B faster, it’s rapid!! Space wise it’s equal, although, Golf R is a five seater, the Type R a four seater. The Golf R is also much more subtle, so you can park it anywhere and nobody will look at it twice.
However, the Golf R is NOT special, the Type R is. Test drive one, it’s unreal. Many have said it feels like a Porsche GT car. The gearbox, steering, engine, brakes are on a different level. It’s a true sports car. The interior is significantly better than the Golf MK 8. It also looks more special on the outside, it’s stunning. And it’s still practical enough, amazing front seats, loads of space in the back, massive boot, all the tech features. It’s currently my only car and I have 2 kids and a dog! It’s a big car, nearly M3 sized. The only drawbacks are that amazing manual gearbox is less suited to commuting in city traffic,…and (for me) a greater concern leaving it parked somewhere because it’s more attention grabbing. That big rear wing etc
So really do you want the ultimate daily (Golf R), but a bit dull and generic. Or make a couple of minor practical compromises for an all time great everyday sports car. Your call! Depends on what fits your own life.
Final point on the Golf R. I had the MK7.5 which is great inside and out. The MK8 has the worst infotainment and I don’t like the interior design. They kinda sorted some of it for the MK8.5. Personally I wouldn’t touch a MK8. It would have to be 7.5 or 8.5
Feel free to ask me any more questions!
Have some performance cars myself such as Aston GT8, Vantage V12S manual and I have one of these. I love it. A car doesn’t have to be an expensive performance car to be a good car. The Honda gives you emotion, feedback, excellent steering, great seats and the best manual gearbox. Get one of these and you won’t be disappointed😎
First review of the Type R that has made me want one…. Loving your enthusiasm
Never owned a Honda but loved the FL5 so much, I bought one(same color)for my wife since she was wanting to get back in a stick shift. This car lives up to expectations, and then some! The front end is razor sharp. So much bite in the corners, even with stock suspension and tires. Its amazing what kinda wizardry Honda engineers pulled off for a FWD turbo hatchback. We'll be keeping this one for a long time!
Honda are masters of making cars that give you the fizz. I've driven the newer Ferraris and McLarens, and I won't deny the performance they deliver is mind bending, but nothing I've driven puts a smile on my face like the S2000. All the horsepower and torque in the world can't replicate the sheer joy of 9000 revs, a 6 speed manual, and the wind in your hair. Honda is a truly special brand. The day they stop making cars like this will be a sad day for all driving enthusiasts.
💯👆
Had loads of hondas over the years. Preludes,S2000's, Civic type r ,etc. Great cars had lots of fun in them over the years. Motorsport heritage means alot and you can feel that little bit in every car, which make it special, different from the rest . This new era of cars which they are trying to make us buy will never have what these special honda's have. Long live the type r!!!
It's so sad that many hot hatches are no longer being made. I also like this new type-r, even if it's more a sedan than hatchback.
Focus RS is already dead, Honda the only one left doing the hot hatch drivers car, maybe Toyota also with the Yaris GR. There is a corolla GR, but that's only available in the US. You should feature more "affordable/down to earth" cars, enjoyed the review.
As I understand the GR Corolla is an amazing car from UA-camr’s and motor-/car journalists from Canada, the US and Australia where it’s available among other markets except Europe unfortunately. But where it would be priced compared to Honda Civic Type R FL5 and other hot hatches I’m it sure if it were available here. Or if would stand a chance in the competitive hot hatch market here in Europe. It maybe would compete against the GR Yaris or GR86 and eat markets from them and that’s why Toyota don’t bring it to Europe. I wouldn’t mind to see the GR Corolla in European shores though
I was out today in My R32. Hot hatch royalty! Best sounding hot hatch! 😎
Expectations are pretty high after listening to the podcast where you hyped this thing ;)
Congratulations on 600k Sam.... Thanks for keeping us entertained for a very long time!
The regular hybrid is brilliant and that car is quick and so clever, Honda are just brilliant and so innovative. I think the prices are high now a days but I think like you touched on, they don’t offer much optional extras like German brands do so when you go spec for spec the civic is better value
I am starting to feel a certain connection with Type R, I am an owner of a 2007 JDM Honda Civic FD2 Type R.
Felt the need to open up the UA-cam app and found this video posted just 33 seconds ago. Guess I’m the first to comment and one of the first few to enjoy the wonderful Type R videography put together by my favourite UA-camr which I have followed since 2015.
- Viewer from Singapore 🇸🇬
My EP3 is a tenth of the price and has the gear change on the dash. Less than a hands width from the steering wheel.
197bhp and as Chris Harris said, modern hot hatches could learn a lot from it.
He is spot on. A fantastic, little car, that would fit in the boot of most modern vehicles.
Nice that you're finally driving an every day every man car. Sometimes it's hard to connect when all you're driving are Porsches, McLarens and Ferraris. I owned a 1984 Honda Accord hatchback with a manual. Loved that car until I burned out the clutch. Don't forget Honda has been involved with Indy racing as well. Speaking of Indy racing...Indy 500 is about on.
Yes, more like this please! Thanks for the Senna tribute as well.
Awesome to hear your thoughts on the Type R. Thanks for sharing the insights at the McLaren HQ! That was a nice little bonus.
as always, love your camera work and visuals in general. you just know what looks good and how to present it accordingly. cool car as well! first civic that actually looks good to me.
Absolutely loved this Sam thanks a great homage to Ayrton . I treasure a photo with the great man and an autograph at the Adelaide Grand Prix in 1989 as a school kid ... also front wheel drive not for me but Honda has been doing great cars for ever ... also still smashing it in F1 ... big love from Radelaide Australia
Yes, FL5 will be my next daily for sure! I've been after it for a while, waiting for the price to come down a bit lol second-hand
It isn't going to come down that much unless you are waiting a couple of years. Depreciation is almost none existent on the FL5.
Worth however long you have to wait for it
This is my daily and my weekender is a GT4. Both fantastic cars and I believe the best in their respective categories.
What annoys me with hot hatches and saloons nowadays is how much they cut corners with must haves. Especially when they're supposed to be a car that can "do it all". The Civic R doesn't even have rear air vents, a small oversight but to me with my kids that would be a deal breaker. It's 2024 and cars are still being made without these small commodities...
Good timing. Just reached out to some dealers to inquire on purchase of a new type r!
Huge Honda fan and hope-to-be McLaren owner here, so perfect video. Thanks.
Thank you Sam! The new Type-R looks and sounds the part for sure 😊 Must say, also really enjoyed your 'Behind The F1' historic overview, very cool to hear you relay this impressive history.
Perhaps you can arrange a new 'Seen Through Glass meets Honda Type-R' longer term loan for the upcoming Winter? Plenty of room for your family, maybe invite Tony out with the Type-R 👍
Many thanks Sam for the excellent videos (I rewatched STG classics!).
I have the sport touring and definitely have a bit of buyers remorse for not doubling down on the type R though the mark ups were insane on the car
I've driven both this, the i30 N, Focus ST MK4, GR Yaris, Fiesta ST and i20 N. Tell you what the i20 was better than all of them for B road driving and equipment. It is also the cheapest too and weirdly with Bose had the best sound system. Only thing the Ford's have going for them is the winter heated screen.
The i20N is easily the most fun to drive hot hatch, this hype R isn't even close.
@@CTF33 It certainly had more speed though, the i20 was cheaper, just as well equipped, but it is significantly the best for B road and corners.
Cheap and fun to drive is what a hot hatch is supposed to be, the type R is not that.
Shut up
Great video as always. Even if I'm not too interested in the car, ypur presentation is always top notch 👍👍.
that video morphed unexpectedly....from a review to a Senna fest.....happy that that surprise is not in the title.....nice easter egg
I absolutely love these, would make an amazing daily (once the prices cut in half 😂)
Glad you made a point about its size, more saloon than hatch. Crying shame Ford stopped the Fiesta ST to concentrate in electric monstrosities. I was hoping for a Fiesta RS...
Man what a Great video and car! I love the good old hothatches. Hope a lot of people buy these!
In 2016 I spent the night at mtv via Hilton during the Oz GP. Watched the senna film next too the 1993 donnington winning car. That was quite a moment.
Yes I have 1 & it’s sensational congrats great review 👍
I love the Type R, had about 5 FK8’s, now have a GT4 but damn I miss the Type R…it really is that good❤
Nice to see something the average folk can afford haha
I don't think this car is within 'average' affordability.
Not average but something more possible.
50k for a honda is insane
This car ain’t no average
A used one from 2 generations ago maybe
Having normal bulbs for the indicators at the rear on a £50k car is ridiculous. Every single light should be an LED!
Agreed, but at least it's a very easy/inexpensive fix
If they put oem led in l, the replacements wouldn't be easy from a tuner standpoint. You wouldn't be able to switch led colors or intensity. Keeping it halogen, you can buy aftermarket led in all different shapes, sizes and colors.
@XOX-fs4ww the headlights are LED oem, the rear turn signals and reverse are easy to swap to LED
I can't tell you how many times I rewinded just to look at and listen to you talk about the Senna cars
Sam, what a fantastic video, both on the Type R, but also the Senna piece. Great content as always Sam!
I'm a current Honda Owner, and I have to admit, Honda defrauded their buyers and "Fans".
Initially the FL5 Type R (Production Spec, same as STG has reviewed) was the Fastest FWD around NBR, which in reality it was debunked by Misha 2 years ago (?).
Honda claimed it was the special version called the "Type R S Grade Version" which would come later that year.
The time has drived by, and no announcement made.
IMHO, Honda was pushed and forced to launch the FL5, due to lack of their own parts and supply, they pumped the prices like crazy to be able to deliver something to their customers.
Feels quite a bit of a unpolished product at first sight, with QA issues for earlier units.
And for the money of an FL5 you can pretty much buy an Alpine new.
QA issues? I thought there was only one. The issue with the driver’s seat or am I missing something?
I paint-matched my wing and mirror caps, because I thought all that gloss black was a bit of a disaster too. Much prefer it all Champ White now.
Sam you need to try an i30N and make a video on it. It gets very close to the performance and driver focused feel of the Civic Type R, but offers much better value for money.
I would say it still has slightly better tech than the Civic, a better sounding engine, better looks if you prefer a traditional hatchback shape, proven to be more durable on track. All for £15k less
Truth, the i30N is a better all around hot hatch, i20N is awesome too, and they don't overheat on track.
@@CTF33 Exactly. There’s a reason they use completely standard i30Ns as ring taxis at the Nurburgring, and rag them around all day
And the Elantra N just swept the podium at the 24hrs of Nurburgring too.
Focus rs soon to be dead?
Its been dead since 2018
Nothing accidental about that shunt in Suzuka in 1990 Sam, he admitted it years later. Everyone remembers senna with rose tinted glasses, which is fair enough, he was a legend and huge talent, even compared to guys like Prost, mansell and piquet. And I; my mind, Schumacher too. But don’t joke that it was anything other than deliberate at Suzuka.
You must try the last restyled Hyundai I30N. That's a bang for the buck...
I20N is the best hot hatch still made. Veloster N was even better.
It is definitely on my list! I love it! Honda did such a great job and I can’t wait to have it! 🤩🤩🤩 Plus anyone who talks about the Beemers, Mercs etc. ….., enjoy the running cost of those 😁
Tasteful and enjoyable as always Sam
Wow, I was enjoying the video but you went further and showcased the legend Senna. Great video , GOAT TYPE R HONDA and GOAT SENNA
As a JDM fan I'm glad you are finally opening your eyes up to them😂😂💕
09:55 because people are buying boring frumpy SUVs. I have no idea why, Life's too short for boring cars. I've got a GR Yaris and the Civic model bellow this- the Advance Hybrid, which allows me to carry my e-mtb in the boot, unfortunately the GR doesn't, Both are very fun to drive in very different ways.
Spot on. I bought a 2022 GR Yaris 4 months ago. An absolute delight. Nimble, quick, secure and Z SMALL! I LOVE IT!
Amazing review and tour!
I have a HUGE fan on a proper PDK or DSG gearbox, and admit it, they are WAY faster specially on a track. But I owned 3 Hondas and I also admit Honda's manual gearboxs are right there on top as one of the best. P.S. I have a friend getting one of those in July... and on boy, I am going to get behind the wheel for sure.
"why aren't people buying these cars?" well at least I am, have had my FL5 for a year now and LOVE it! Great content as usual Sam :)
Because the US is their biggest market and the dealers charge way over
The cost of insuring them in the UK as they are in such a high grouping.
Because i have to pay just a little south of 100.000 Euro to get one here in Holland.
Your presentation is excellent and enjoyed the history
The Type R is manufactured in very limited numbers. Only about 3300 were available in America in 2023. A much larger number than in the UK.
Feel there is more there in terms of a video on the type R! Would love to see Tony involved and behind the wheel of this! Maybe this should have been a consideration rather than the panamera 🤷♂️😂👍🏼
THe price in Norway add taxes then x 10 and baaa, cool video!
Let’s go Sam! Finally us Aussies getting the jump on an upload 💪
The proper hot hatch has to be the Yaris GR Four .
And the i20N which is slightly better but doesn't have awd.
I would definitely call the CTR a liftback and not a sedan, if not a hatchback. But yeah people don't really say liftback any longer in the US.
If you see the actual civic sedan, this doesnt look like a sedan
They are almost identical…
The sedan merely has a slight butt edge to the tail end .
And by slight , I do mean just there.
You could be forgiven for thinking the sedan might just be a lift back.
I prefer a sedan but this wins over being more practical with the hatchback .
Hi Seen through glass been watching for 2 years
Great comment you muppet
The new Type-r runs Hot on the Track, after a few laps you need to shut it down due to oil temps. I would take an 1997 Integra Type-R they were actually track ready out of the box!
True the FK8 is not track ready, gets too hot.
I remember when the FK2 was released and it was £35k, now this new one is £50k. I doubt this new one is much quicker, I don't know why people would buy one of these.
I owned a 2001 Integra Type R with the same gear knob!
I have a real soft spot for Type R's. Yes it's a bit chavvy but they're just fun and childish... And we all need a little fun!
Not really a hot hatch any more, and it definitely puts the Civic in a different class of cars compared top previous generations... Noticeably larger with more elegant premium design (and a price tag to reflect that!).
I wish they offered it with 4WD i.e. FWD with the ability to send power to the rear when it loses traction. Obviously not happening though...
Honda...have just lost it.....with the new Civic TypeR......forgotten its mojo........the Integra TypeR was their Halo.
@@Mexxx65😂 please
Gti and golf R.
Either way the new civic is excellent and I’m loving mine.
Absolutely love the new exhaust look but all and all it’s pretty expensive in Down Under dollars
Thankfully, in the US, we can still get the Golf with a manual.
You can get the golf R here manual just not the GTi
Sam this my favourite video of yours ever 👌 Ayrton Senna adoration the main contributor not the Honda Civic Type R. 🙏great video
Watching this triggers the question: is it time for another “hot hatch tour” with James and Paul?
Maybe with a somewhat more relaxed definition of ‘hatch’ (and ‘hot’ 😊).
Looking forward to the banter 👍
Are the red seats from Halfords?!
What kind of watch is that?
Great review, congrats on 600k subs! 🙌🏼🚀
Loved this video! Your opinion about the i20 N? Would love to have a video about that car
I find the pedals a bit cramped, specially the clutch pedal so maybe it would be better with an auto
The styling of the front is much better than the last gen. The back (aside from the wing and exhaust) is a snooze fest. As you say it’s more of a saloon. Good review
Underrated car
It's actually the most overrated sport compact
This is like honda's last hurray, it seems like hyundai N and Toyota GR will be dominating on road and track for the foreseeable future.
You can also buy ;
F82 M3/M4
Porsche Cayman
Porsche Boxster
M2
RS5
Lexus RC-F
Porsche 911 996
Porsche 911 997 (a clapped one)
Supra
Alpine A 110
C63 AMG
50k for a Honda is insane.
Exactly 💯
Go drive one for a few days, I guarantee you'll do a u-turn on this post. I'm fortunate enough to have some tasty cars, including the fl5..... For sheer fun I'd pick it above all those you've listed, of which I've driven most.... As a daily commuter then you've got a point with some of them, only a small point though
@@celliott16 I have driven one of these, it was a boost blue one!
I had the previous gen, from 2020. I paid €34.000 (£29.100) brand new and sold it after 3 years to change into something else. When these FL5s came out I had one on loan for a weekend and took it up to the Großglockner to try out (I live 45 mins away). I was going to buy one, but I just couldn’t justify the cost. €63.700 for a Civic. It’s just mental, absolutely mental.
Yes it’s excellent, yes it’s great on the road, probably the best FWD car out there right now. I just can’t imagine a world where I would choose one of these over a 3-4 year old M2C/M4, a Porsche Cayman or Boxster.
So much so, I bought one of the above mentioned models, for less than what I would have paid for this Civic.
Totally agree with @@celliott16
Do the test. Drive one. You will be suprised.
The FK8 was voted Car of the Year several times by several media in competition to the mentioned cars.
And the FL5 was voted car of the year last year by Top Gear.
Don't believe me. Believe Chris Harris. ;-)
Id definitely take the c63 over this Honda, completely different car but still
I bought a honda civic sedan 2022 182hp , same color blue-grey . I would like to buy a typeR . I like to use manual gear, but when it comes to sell the car, it’s hard to find buyer . Manual gear car market is slow, there are very few buyers in Turkey 🇹🇷:/
The 2024 Honda Civic Type R is not a hatchback. It's a liftback.
Last chance FYI to get😂 hot hatches with manual and sporty brakes chassis made for fun
Great video and an even better car!
I have the budget version of this car, a 2022 Civic Si. It's a pretty amazing car for what it is. The handling and gear shift are Porsche-like. The Type R addresses the shortcomings, which are mainly power and brakes. The interior is also great, especially for what is essentially an economy car.
what's the name of that paint color?
Surely Peugeot still make a hot hatch? Or these days is it more of a warm hatch?
Been waiting for this 👍
I had the OG 2002 Type R the cam change was truly special…Although only £18k back then…For me unfortunately Honda now stands for Jazz
It's now in a class of one. Manual hot hatch. Can't think of another. Hence Honda can charge pretty much what they want.
It's about 3 times the length and weight of an original hot hatch.
The original gti weighed 1800lb, 110hp. The tyle r weighs 3180lb and has 315 hp. Its not like stupid bmws that weigh 3800lb for a coupe that can only seat 2 people!
curious to learn more about this 1.5m long, 500kg hot hatch you speak of?
Honda really knocked it out of the park with this new Type - R. Shame you still can’t get one without a big markup
Yeah. Stopped being a proper Hatchback when the FK8 came out. Huge. The FK2 was borderline.
The CTR was my favorite Japanese sedan until i drove the Integra type S
Sadly Honda has lost its soul. Back when hot hatches came about, they had the right idea. Inexpensive, simple and fun as hell to drive. Now for the fun version you're looking at upwards of $45K(CAD)...yeah.......I love my 1989 Civic Si. I have an effing blast driving it anywhere. It's lightweight, agile, and fun as hell!! Yeah, I'll keep it for a while ;-) Cheers
Exactly, this is no affordable hot hatch. Wish they would bring the i20N and GR Yaris to NA.
9 gen is so beautiful ❤
The Cupra Leon VZ is not available as a manual??
Sam are you into trackdays? Id love to watch some trackday content from you
No
