How To Easily Remove Oil From Fabrics/Clothing

  • A great tip for mechanics. Learn the best way to remove new or used motor oil from virtually all clothing/fabrics, as well as food oils without the use of expensive laundry products which usually do not remove all the oil. ALWAYS test on an inconspicuous area first! Excessive brushing on colored fabrics can result in a faded area once the oil has been removed. Always use a VERY soft tooth brush, and blot the fabric more to avoid that problem.

    **ATTENTION: Brushing too hard on colored fabrics, or using a brush that's not soft, can create a faded spot on the colored fabric. Blotting more instead of brushing, can help prevent that. Mineral spirits & liquid dish washing detergent will not damage colored fabrics(based on my tests). You can also use "Non-Chlorinated" Brake Parts Cleaner to remove oil from clothing!

    After frantically scouring the entire internet and multiple forums, I can confidently say this is THE BEST method for getting out used motor oil from tennis shoes! I accidentally got a huge spot on the tip of my bright white shoes and thought I would never be able to wear them again.
    SO THANKFUL I FOUND YOUR VIDEO because this method worked perfectly & I will now recommend it to everyone I know!
    Side note: I did also mix a small amount of Baking Soda into the Dawn Dish Soap when scrubbing my shoe with hot water & that seemed to also help brighten up the white material after the stain was completely removed.

      If it's oil, it will come out. For extreme cases, try using brake parts cleaner. Place a paper towel behind the area where you're directing the spray. As usual, always test in an inconspicuous area first. Thanks for watching! Be sure to rate thumbs up and share.

    Great video!
    I can't argue with your results, which were of course spectacular, however... I've been using automotive hand cleaner, GoJo and the like for over 30 years for removing grease and oil stains from clothing of all types with seemingly equal results to your method. I can't say for absolute certain that hand cleaner works as well on whites, since I honestly don't wear whites while working with oils, grease, postal cancellation grade inks, etc, but I can honestly say that with colors, I have never failed to remove such stains, nor have any affected articles of clothing suffered discoloration.
    The key to success with the automotive hand cleaner is to catch and treat such stains before they enter the wash. If an article of clothing makes it through the wash still stained, finding its way in to the dryer, it's pretty much done.
    With the hand cleaner, I simply rub a generous amount into the stain from both sides of the material and let it sit for a day. I throw the article of clothing in with the wash the next day. The time it takes to treat stained clothing depends on the damage. A stain such as you demonstrated takes less than a minute of rubbing in hand cleaner. Heavily oil soaked Jeans, on the other hand, may take up to 20 minutes. I don't think there are enough hours in the day to make this mineral spirits method of cleaning worthwhile on a heavily oil soaked pair of jeans.
    I am almost tempted to stain a white T-shirt with used motor oil, then treat with hand cleaner and throw it in the wash the next day, but since I always use bleach on whites, I would expect good results all the same. If anybody has tried it on whites and had other than good results, I'd like to know.
    I like that you show an alternative method to those products designed specifically for cleaning laundry stains because to honest, not one of those products that my wife has ever tried actually works. Finally she quit buying them. She knows I have a GoJo dispenser in the basement shop area, just around the corner from the laundry area. :)
    Steve

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  4 роки тому

      I only use two methods. The one shown here, and brake parts cleaner. The brake cleaner video I have puts all other cleaning method to shame.

    • @stevefeldman6486
      @stevefeldman6486 4 роки тому +4

      @@electronicsNmore I'll have to check that one out. Brake parts cleaner is one of my most commonly used substances in the garage. I suspect it should blast stains from clothing pretty well, I've just never thought to use it in that fashion.
      I pretty much stick to cotton in those type environments, so I don't anticipate any ill affects. Have you tried it on any synthetic blends? Most brake parts cleaners, and some of the more volatile electrical contact cleaners will melt many plastics quickly.
      Your two methods and my standby are three effective methods for handling stains. I wonder how it is that products like "Spray & Wash" and "Shout", which pretty much don't work at all in most cases, remain on the market all these years.
      Steve

    • @stevefeldman6486
      @stevefeldman6486 2 роки тому +2

      @@brittanyjackson3020 I think you'll be pleased by the results, so long as you treat the stains before the affected garment goes through the wash, but more importantly, before a stained article finds it's way into the dryer. The heat of the dryer will, more or less, bake the stain into the fabric. I hope the hand cleaner does the trick for you.

      It should work on all fabrics. If the item is colored, then go easy with the brushing or you'll fade the color when the oil has been removed! Use more blotting.

    This worked. Earlier today o got a drip of used oil on my fabric desk chair. I tried to clean right away with Dawn but it left a larger, still visible stain. i agree, try and blot out any excess first instead of smearing more in. 7 hours later i saw your hack online and tried it. I used Dawn after a small amount of mineral spirits and damn its gone.
    Yes watch the hard brushing with a toothbrush or any brush. It will chew up the fabric pretty quick. Found out the hard way on shirt collars.
