Again, I'm so happy you are dedicating a month to Iron Maiden. You could do three songs a day and not get to them all. Since you are a vocal coach I highly recommend "Journeyman" - Death on the Road (HD). I think it's a real showcase of Bruce's voice in an acoustic song. Also, "Paschendale" from the same album would be great. Those two songs really contrast each other.
The video is an official one, not fan made and yes, its using parts of a Buster Keaton film. For legal reasons they were not allowed to have images of Keaton in it though.
Bruce is a pretty fascinating character. He is a world class fencer as well, being an alternate for the British fencing team. I think that his passion for that also exposed him to those subjects more than most people. He was dedicated to his swordsmanship as well as his music. They both drove him. It stands to reason that he would sing what he knows, and things like the charge of the light brigade, the basis for the trooper, were things he studied both for their amazing subject matter, but also the combat techniques that they gave lesson to. And, if that weren't enough, he is a licensed airline pilot, survived throat cancer, and still sounds amazing.
as a huge Maiden fan since the very early 80s. I strongly suggest looking at: Phantom of the Opera live at download, Alexander the great (lyrical video), Strangers in a Strange Land, Wasted Years (live from Flight 666), Paschendale (live from Death on the Road).
Adrian Smith the guitarist always does backup vocals sometimes Steve Harris also does backup depends on the song, Adrian also does lead vocals for his own projects.
Adrian Smith was already mentioned as being a very good singer, but he also just released an album together with Richie Kotzen named Smith/Kotzen on which he shares the lead vocals with Richie. Really great stuff and worth to check out!
If you are looking for some amazing vocals from Bruce’s solo work, check out Tears of the Dragon, live Bruce & Tribuzy. Some of his cleanest live vocals I think I’ve ever heard, and a really amazing track.
A meme said it best. "What if Iron Maiden was formed to teach kids history and literature" many of their songs are based on historical moments in time, (Run To The Hills, The Trooper, Aces High, 2 Minutes to Midnight)) or works of literature (Rime of the Ancient Mariner)
Iron Maiden also draws for literature a like "Murders in the Rue Morgue" or one of my favorite songs "To Tame A Land" which is inspired from the book "Dune"
Really enjoying the Iron Maiden run, Ken. I really appreciate your appreciation for the heavy metal genre and your break down of the incredible stamina and talent it takes to be a metal vocalist. I will say this, Iron Maiden is amazing live. They were the concert I went to and Ronny James Dio was before them (rest his metal god soul). Thank you so much for the great content!
Hi as a big iron maiden fan from England you need to listen too phantom of the opera on the 1st album called iron maiden it's shows off how amazing the band is behind the front man
I grew up with Iron Maiden starting with my freshman year of high school in 1980-1981. Loved the early years through the Powerslave LP then tapered off after Somewhere on Time. I subscribed.
almost 5 months later, i subscribed. I've seen a few of your videos and YT gave you back to me tonight with this song. Was really excited to get your reaction, i'm subscribed. Great different perspective for me.
The backing vocals at this time was done by Adrian (guitarist) and Steve (bassist) live, but Adrian is the one who appears in several songs recorded in studio. He was a vocalist of his own band before joining Iron Maiden. The difference in tone between the lyrics and the "movie" that intersects the video, I think, was done at the time to "lighten the mood" of the song, since this song was release as the first single of the album.
Merry month of Maiden makes me so happy! Thank you Ken! Please choose videos of live performances! They are always better live. Even in their bad days. It is the energy! 🌷🙂
Ken, I love your channel so much!!! Thank you for your Iron Maiden reviews 🙏 You and Bruce always make my day. I have worked all over the world for several years and your channel is huge part of what gets me through.
Some very good tracks from their more recent catalog, songs with some great vocal acrobatics like When the Wild Winds Blows. Of course, you have to check out The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. Some incredible live versions of that. Flight of Icarus is an older "classic" track you might enjoy. So many! Thank you for highlighting the Mighty Maiden! Up the Irons!
One of the reasons Bruce was taught to project his voice as if he was not using a microphone. And to bounce his voice clearly of the back wall of the room he is performing at. This is the offical video. MTV area.

Check out some of Adrian Smiths (one of the guitar players in maiden) stuff, like "reach out" (B-side from an Iron Maiden single) and his band A.S.A.P.
I subscribed, Ken. I always enjoy watching people react to Maiden. Your reaction to Hallowed Be Thy Name brought me to your page. Nice to see you're taking a deeper dive into Maiden and Bruce Dickinson. I saw them 5 times in the 80's; twice on Piece of Mind Tour and thrice on the World Slavery Tour ( Powerslave album). the 80's were the best!

Adrian Smith the guitarist in the band just did an album with Ritchie Kotsen another notable guitar player. I had no idea Adrian sang so we'll especially since he is older. I'm sure people have already said this but the film featured in this music video is a short film called The Uncovered wagon from 1923, a parody of The covered wagon also released in 1923
The footage is from the 1923 silent movie The Uncovered Wagon, which was a parody of the movie The Covered Wagon, also from 1923. The most notable actor in this was comedian Paul Parrot (real name James Parrot) but he where more known as a director. He directed some of the Laurel and Hardy movies.

Each album is usually written based on a specific theme. You should ✔ out The Evil That Men Do, Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter & Can I Play With Madness. Oh and almost forgot Fear Of The Dark.
You know, it is perplexing to me that metal managed to elude your radar in your youth, as the nature of your sense of humor seems so in keeping with the friends of my childhood all of us who were Lovecraft reading, D&D playing, sci-fi loving, Douglas Adams worshiping dorks... who also love musical theater juxtaposed with the newest metal albums we could manage to find monthly back in the 80s. In my experience people of this ilk just happen to love metal.
You should look at something from the Live at Donnington 1992 performance. Maybe some of the slower songs like Wasting Love or Afraid To Shoot Strangers
Yes, this is official video, and those comedy pieces are from classic "Uncovered wagon", which is parody of another movie "Covered wagon". UW is on youtube, its actually pretty funny with all those jokes and action.
They created quite a few songs from literature/novels. The Trooper comes from The Charge of the Light Brigade...English light Cavalry vs the Russians in the Crimean War, battle of Balaclava. Even Out of the Silent Planet (Science/Perlandra) trilogy from CS Lewis so much reference in their songs.
I subscribed! Love your reactions to my favorite music. Wasted Years from Iron Maiden is another good song. Plus check out Beyond the Wheel from Soundgarden live in Germany. You will not be disappointed.
Iron Madian was one of my go to bands when I was but a long haired skinny teen in the 80s. though I don't think bruce ever got the recognition he deserved for his lyricism. I mean the man not only read frank herberts complete dune saga, he also wrote two heavymetal songs about it !! As far as I concerned they deserve a spot right up there with other heady bands; rush, pink floyd, and jethro tull.. what a hell of a time to grow up 🤟
Iron Maiden is my favorite band ever but I also love Pantera. I’m curious how you respond to Cemetery Gates and Cowboys from Hell. Thank you! Btw, did you know that Bruce is also a commercial pilot and businessman, a historian, a fencer…..he’s a Sevant of talent. Once in a lifetime individual! Piece of Mind Revelations is a fav for me but this whole album is crazy good! This is a rabbit hole you can never escape!
Subscribed recently, huge maiden fan and love the reactions, great stuff and keep them coming, and definitely check out "reach out" that i see already mentioned, Adrian is on the right in this video of number of the best playing the Red guitar, well worth a listen,
Adrian Smith (guitar) is also a vocalist. He sings on an Iron Maiden B-side called “Reach Out” with Bruce doing backing vocals.
"Reach Out" is actually one of my favorite songs by "Iron Maiden" (putting that in quotes, because it's not _really_ by them)
A.S.A.P is awesome as well!
A lot of Adrian’s “non-Maiden” material showcases his vocals, including his newest project with Richie Kotzen.
