In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to Run To The Hills by Iron Maiden. This was their very first single release with Bruce Dickinson as lead singer back in 1982.
Reference Video: • Iron Maiden - Run To T...
"Doug Helvering plays Iron Maiden on a grand piano." I'd buy that album.
Yeah, I was thinking "a grand piano cover of Run To the Hills is the cover that I didn't know I needed until just now"
its already out there I have the cd :). not by Doug ofcourse heh
Wish he had played along w/the song a bit more.
The Iron Maiden Play Piano Tribute exists long years ago...!! is a great album from "Iron Maiden Piano Classics Songs"
@@MajorImpact and the Iron Maiden song on harp..!! too dont forget it jejeje
That "Hey Jude" killed me! Like, really, my wife was not happy putting the baby to sleep and me laughing out loud like this! Good one, Doug!
Brilliant observation by Doug
"Run to Hey Jude"!
That was a good one.
What the hell....Further proof that we all use the same 12 notes!
Things like that are why I keep coming back!
"Wasted Years"! Insanely iconic guitar riff by Maiden
Wasted years is one of my all-time favorites!
The riff is legendary!
“I’m trying to grow my hair like Bruce”...you are truly embracing metaldom.
A lot of people keep requesting Infinite Dreams and Powerslave's title track, but that's for very good reason! I think those would indeed be quite interesting for you to react to.
Do infinite dreams next or powerslave the title track. Both of those songs are musically technical 🤘🤘 thank you for remembering
Infinite Dreams!!! Yes!!!
I second that.
Yes Infinite Dreams, Aces High (official video Clip), The Trooper (also the official Video). The Trooper is the fav. Song of Steve Harris (Steve even got an tatoo of mascot “Eddie” as the Trooper on his arm.
I whatever. Infinite Dreams is the way to go.
Yep. Infinite dreams all day.
Clive Burr's drumming is so fast on that song. He was a great drummer at his peak.
not sure if this is a hot take or not, but I prefer his drumming to Nicko McBrains
@P D whoa when did he say that?
@@FusicPool Bruce said after Clive died. I think he actually said Clive had a certain swing that Nicko doesn’t have despite Nicko being the technically better drummer.
I liked Clive and Nicko. Damned shame about Clive, absolutely tragic.😢
I’ve always preferred his drumming. RIP Clive.
As a drummer i can tell you this is one of the hardest song to play live or along to and keep time without a click track.
Is this man playing Iron Maiden in Church?
AWESOME!!!
I was going to say that xD.
Religious fanatics in the past would rage so much if they saw that xD
@@emavgo And that would be, because...?
@@scopchanov Because 666, the number of the beast. Hell and fire, was spawned to be released.
@@Jonsson474 Which of these is not biblical?
@@scopchanov You're one of those, aren't you?
Definitely add Infinite Dreams and Revelations to your Maiden Monday list... both are great songs!
In interview Bruce admitted the chorus was inspired by Frank Sinatra style rising thirds in My Way. Probably the most 'commercial' Maiden song but still a classic.
Wasted Years is probably the most commercial Maiden song, but even that’s a classic.
That's probably why it's such an absolute banger in the live shows.
@@ZilchGalaxy Can I play with madness
One of the most straight-forward songs in the catalog, but that little bass solo Steve plays under the bridge is just the best.
Bruce's first album with the band and Clive's last album with the band.
I loved Clive's drumming. Purgatory, Gangland, just so powerful!
@@revylokesh1783 Yep but Nicko is a Great replacement.
ACES HIGH, best Maiden song❤️
Flight of Icarus gets my vote. Where Eagles Dare as well
great tune and another that captures a moment in history (minus social commentary)
Don't make me pick favorites when it comes to Maiden songs. That's like Sophie's Choice.
If Prince wrote Iron Maiden lyrics:
"Run 2 the hills. Run 4 your lives."
Make it more 2021. Illiteracy and such.
"Run two the hills. Run four your lives."
ur
An Iron Maiden Classic... RIP Clive Burr
I can remember my older brother mentioning that his HS english class analyzed this song's lyrics back in 1985. Another great lyrical master piece by Steve Harris!
Bruce Dickinson: "we fought them hard we fought them weeeellll"
Doug: D-Minor
I remember vividly how awesome the summer of 1982 was as a 16 year old. Run to the Hills was everywhere, radio, shirts, stores... The entire album is a classic. every song, except maybe Gangland are amazing. Also out at the time was the Scorpions Blackout and Judas Priest Screaming for Vengeance. What an amazing time to be a young metal head.
It was hilarious and awesome at the same time watching you play this on piano on the spot just by ear. Just never thought I’d hear someone play Iron Maiden on piano but it was really cool 😎
Beautiful and amazing!
Thank you!
Maiden everyday! 🤘😁
One of the most enjoyable reaction channels going around not simply because you know what you're talking about but because you so obviously enjoy every minute of it.
This song and video hooked me for life. Been a Maiden fan since. Seen them several times including in 2019. My favorite band!
Yes! Same here.
Me too. To everything you said.
I lost it when Doug started playing Hey Jude! HAHA that was great!
I want to see Doug opening a live Maiden gig with a piano intro
I think I'd fly half way around the world to see that
That has just blown my mind. Maiden and The Beatles are two of my all-time favourite bands, and I've never noticed the same chord progression between this and Hey Jude. Awesome!
The number of the beast was the 1st LP I bought in 1983. Never stopped listening to the Maiden since 🤘
Doug please, do Stranger in a strange land and make me happy 😆
LETS GO!
@@tristramcoffin926 A unnoticed mistake writing on the mobile. It is surely better to be called doughnut instead, as the corrector suggested even this word 🙃
“It seems radio friendly”…indeed it was one of the few and still is Doug. There’s a reason they’re the best live band ever IMO. 200+ shows per year globally to reach their fans because they weren’t played on the radio.
Missed Maiden Monday very much. But I hope you had some nice days off. Thanks!
I was never a fan of crowds, but when Iron Maiden and Dream Theater toured together in 2010 I had to go see them in Montreal. My two faves together. DT opened and the power went out during the first song. DT drummer played the iconic "Run" drum intro and we all sang the song in the dark with just drums!
I love the way you're now bemusedly accepting of Em tonality in Maiden's music. Much like Tank's running "EV-1" comment about Emppu's guitar in Nightwish videos.
Also, the overlay of "Hey Jude" was awesome! Keep it up, Doug, til tomorrow
"Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "Run To The Hills" are cleared, I think it's time for the title track of the album, "The Number Of The Beast" - spoiler: it's NOT on E minor.
He-he its in D major I belive….
@@KurtGAndersen I'd call it D mixolydian since it uses the flat seventh (C) chord. Still has a major sound. And it's interesting that a song talking about "the devil" is in a major/happy yet ominous sound. That's the greatness of the song in my opinion.
@@freakazoid314 played it on the bass guitar for my Pastor, First Assembly of God when i was 13 back in '84. He was amazed then asked for the name of the song.
and uhh can we get him playing that one on piano in this church? hahahahaha
It is great to see someone with a classical background analysis on a metal song. Even more from someone who seems to enjoy it. And he does it a really fair and deep fashion. Thank you, Doug.
Love seeing you enjoying yourself with Maiden and the piano. Awesome and so fun! Thanks for the special Maiden Monday Wednesday!!! What an unexpected treat.
God I love seeing this man play piano to classic metal songs lol. Just the joy in his expressions while he listens/plays makes my day. Literally ANY Iron Maiden song he checks out makes me happy, though I would love to see him check out some of their less mainstream/popular tracks.
He did a reaction to Alexander the Great and also To Tame a Land, for example.
Glad you are back. Enjoy your videos and love that you actually know music, chords, keys, etc. You make it more interesting!
This has quickly become my favorite channel good work Doug!
thank you for all you do here with all types of music.
From Iron Maiden, I want to see you analyze Aces High (my favorite from them) and Wasted Years!
The Talisman full version, for the story if nothing else. You won’t regret it.😎👍
What do you mean the full version?
@@konstantinospantazis6325 they posted the live from their concert in Santiago one with and one without the introduction. I have the short version (without intro) on my cardio playlist.
@@andrewjones588 ah thanks because i thought there was another studio version i didn't know of
@@konstantinospantazis6325 Up the Irons, mate!🤘😎🤘
Fucking En Vivo. Best Bruce vocal ever.
Great stuff Doug, really enjoy watching and hearing you explore Maiden... listening to these guys in the 80s and the reaction from parents and the PMRC (Thanks for the lyric stickers and extra album sales Tipper) i never imagined the music of Maiden being examined in this way, so it's very cool.
Definitely their most radio friendly song, it’s the only one that gets played on UK radio stations like BBC Radio 2 etc
Same here in the US, once in awhile you’ll hear The Trooper
It's amazing how they became one of the biggest and best, if not the biggest metal bands of all time without radio play.
Fantastic as always !!!
Go to the year 2000 and do Dream of Mirrors! It's so good!
I agree, it's a great song and one of my favorites.
Great to have had Maiden Monday today! Thanks for the video, look forward to more Maiden songs and reactions!
The bit where you played along and clearly enjoyed it so much filled me with joy at a time when I don't get much joy from life. This is one of my favourite Maiden songs. I much prefer their older albums.
That was a great video - keep them coming !
Love how you can pick it up and play along. Great reaction yet again.
So Awesome Metal!🎶🎵🎤🎹💯😎
I have been waiting for Iron Maiden Mondays. Finally here!
Love it when you play along!
Love seeing you riffing along to the songs Doug, I'd like to see more of that.
Blind Guardian - “Wheel of Time”
The most amazing piece of music
This is easily one of the best youtube channels
Yes! At the piano! As it always should be!!!
This one and "princess of the night" from SAXON addicted me to Heavy Metal back in '82🤘
Princess of the Night is such a fantastic song.
I'm probably the only one requesting "Journeyman", but I'll keep requesting it! It's a good song and a very different Maiden song, and one I think you'd enjoy! Of course the top requests by other people are all great songs too, so as long as you keep doing Maiden... 😛
Hello from Brazil! Love your work, man
You can always find a great musician when they can give you the root notes while just listening!
What about The Thin Line Between Love and Hate? It's kinda b-sides but so interesting.
Great song and definitely a deeper cut!
That’s a moment of real magic, which iron maiden doesn’t always capture in the studio. They are a real band.
You playing the piano made this video sooooooooo great. 💯💯💯
hahaha!!! i totally never expected that hey jude bit! that was actually brilliant and made me laugh :D
Wow.. new here, but love the playing along with it even more then the 1st video I have seen of yours.. really excited to check out the rest of your content...
Hey Doug ! That was quite an interesting comparison, and, spot on as usually. Never thought of that...
Glad to have you back, and until I saw your video from your vacation trip, I was extremely anxious not to see you on the Maiden Monday, and was truely praying that nothing bad happened to you. Don't ever do that again to your followers Doug ❤️❤️❤️.
And nice catch at the end, never realized it while listening from Iron Maiden, and when you played it on piano, I was like.... "Hum I know this music and it ain't Iron Maiden..." but couldn't connect the dots as quickly as you did.
As usual, great job, and thanks for that video once more.
Thank you for this sir.
"We ran to the hills, except we weren't running, we were driving." That sentence is poetry in itself given the context of the song...
Wasn't expecting that Hey Jude part LOL. Amazing Doug
Holy crap ! I love your piano work parallel to the reaction... this shows so much of a musicians thoughts on an song, great !
thank you for remembering Maiden Monday Doug. top banana! good choice.
This is my favorite channel right now. I love your style.
Please analyze The Wall by Kansas.
Love your piano playing. Spot on!
You got it at the end "master " comes to mind well done!!!
I recommend another band: Judas Priest. Starting songs might be Victim of Changes, Beyond the Realm of Death, The Ripper or Breaking the Law.
Honestly, they have a lot of amazing songs, can't go wrong with the Priest!
@@surfdigby Out in the Cold takes the cake for me from Turbo. Such an underrated song IMO!
blood red skies too is amazing
Breaking the law, breking the law, bzzt, bzzt, breaking the law, breaking the laaaaaw
@@gatsu8826 Blood Red Skies is probably my second favourite Priest song (after The Sentinel). It’s so good.
Hello from Brazil, Doug! Your videos are the best!
That cheeky, joyful, grin on the discovery of Hey Jude in there
i just had to scroll through all your videos to remember what video it was you changed one song into another with the chord progression! i forgot the songs but just remembered it was totally awesome and had to seek it out again! xD
I've always found it really fun to hear musicians improvise along with a piece of music I'm familiar with. I feel like I'm catching a glimpse of the activities of a secret club I'm not part of.
I love the videos where you do the analysis and play along with the song. The first video I saw you do this for was Storytime by Nightwish. I'd love to see more of these.
Really Doug “hey Jude” radio friendly. Ahh, you’re such a Doug, and how lucky we are to have you. You are the best, and by a distance, in the reaction format. I don’t know who’s second because their light years behind you and I can’t see them.
That was #Gold Doug. Loved your Beatles reaction bomb
Oh man i love this Mondays !! There is three songs i remember as first from my early child hood: kiss i was made for loving you, pink floyd time, and Iron Maiden the trooper. I love consider my self as strong Iron fan, even when I am not that in to all of their albums.
There is one song which somehow every time locking in me in some strange time and space capsule, and sending me to different dimension with 100% success and i just dont know how or why. it's got to do a lot with harmonies between two guitars and the sound of them. its just unreal , it's like when you are sure , you are witnessing the real magic, something otherwordly, something like meeting alien. The song is Where Eagles Dare. I am sure it is best Bruce's performance as well.
can you please do this one too.
keep up your great work! BTW i dont believe in god but i love the IRONy , you doing it in church .
Mr Doug, excelent reaction. Please do INFINITE DREAMS or AFRAID TO SHOOT STRANGERS
Infinite Dreams is really good, one of my favorites.
Hell yeah, I was down on Monday when I couldn't have my Maiden Monday but now I'm up again!
Doug, last week completed 2 years without Andre Matos in our realm. Andre was a huge Dickinson fan and his singing very influenced by him, although it was very unique. Andre was the lead singer and pianist of two great metal bands from Brazil, Angra and Shaman. I´ve already commented in another video, suggesting you to react/review Carry On by Angra (or Shaman´s live version) and the amazing live version of Fairy Tale by Shaman, both sang by Andre Matos. He was very cherished by his fans and a respected musician. Hope you enjoy his composition and singing sometime. Cheers from Brazil!
Blind Guardian- A night at the opera
You will lov it! Greetings from Greece
Yes we’ve been all over him for it!
And then there was silence would be great or Sacred Worlds album opener from At the Edge of Time. Think it would be cool to see what he thinks of the Legacy of the Dark Lands also since an actual Philharmonic was employed in the making.
I feel like one day he’ll get to it...
@@tmauro386 And then we can watch Doug experience Hansi playing the audience as masterfully as Freddie Mercury ever did in "Bard's Song" and "Valhalla"
@@phred23 too many great BG songs to choose from. Feel like we may need to ease him in so not to frighten him away 😆
@@tmauro386 Yeah, but those middle period albums are amazing material to choose from -- SOMEWHERE, IMAGINATIONS, NIGHTFALL and NIGHT AT THE OPERA are all fantastic
@@phred23 absolutely agree they are all great.
Just really dig the orchestra in sacred worlds wanna hear Doug pick it apart and then there was silence pretty cool too. Seems like the one most are voting for... Wonder if Doug’s a Tolkien fan?
If this is radio friendly, wait for "Can I play with madness"
Awesome piano improv and loved seeing you get giddy with the closing and then explaining how it's similar to ending structure of Hey Jude. You can't find this kind of analysis anywhere!
I'm surprised you didn't talk about the rhythm, Doug! This song really started a HUGE trend for Maiden, doing the eighth-sixteenth-sixteenth "gallop", which then they blew wide open with The Trooper and Flight of Icarus on the next album. For most of the 80s, that was a trademark rhythm for most of Maiden's heaviest tunes. Great video, man!
Heck yea! Iron Maiden on Piano!
hey my dude, fyi, youre an acoustic guitar tablature MACHINE... lol keys, chords, progressions n arrangements, n light theory n explanations... literal goldmine
Love your piano playing :) very nice, thanks !
Welcome back Doug.
I really enjoyed the way you just started to have fun as you played along. Lol
Such a good album.
Bruce said in an interview that the vocal was rising 7ths, inspired by New York by Sinatra
No, their radio-friendly single is "Can I Play With Madness", lol.
I've never seen you play along before. Loved it and finding the Beatles reference was cool.
I find myself needing the whole grand piano cover in my life
