I did this every week for our Doberman the last year of her life. She was old, and we found out she had bone cancer. They said if she was lucky, she had 3 months. I didn't do liver though. Each week she got a different meat added to her food. I rotated between hamburger, chicken breast, and steak. Yes steak, I did not care what it cost me. She also got two pain pills a day and whatever treats she wanted daily. It was a little over a year later when we had to put her down because she broke her leg chasing a rabbit. She acted perfectly fine until the day that happened. We took her to the vet, he checked her over, looked at her chart and said, "What did you do to her". I was shocked. He said it was good, not bad at all. He said ge had been a vet for almost 40 years and had never seen a dog in such great shape and he had never had a dog with bone cancer live longer than 6 months with chemo and 3 without. We did no treatments and used the money to give her everything she wanted as long as she seemed like she was feeling good. My vet said he was in shock by what he was seeing. If her leg would not have broken at the tumor site she probably would have lived longer. My only regret was not amputating her leg, but he sounded at the time like it would not have helped and maybe made her life much harder. I am a proponent of homemade dog food.

I feed a raw diet to my dogs and my Newfoundland also got bone cancer. She lived almost 7 months and really did not limp much or act uncomfortable until her last day, which is especially unusual for such giant dogs. All she had was some steroids and her raw food. All my dogs have eaten raw food for the last 15 years now and I will never go back, although I would consider cooking the food. I would never feed dog food though. Oh, and I was a vet tech so I used to drink the Kool-Aid about the wonders of vet food. Never again! They get minimal vaccines, no flea meds, and raw food and they are the healthiest dogs I’ve had.

We have a 135 lb Newfie. She refuses to eat dry or canned dog food! I saw a video that this man posted of him making the recipe that was sent to him by “The Farmer’s Dog” when his dog ran out of food before the next autoshipment. He used ground turkey, but our dog prefers boneless skinless chicken breast. When it goes on sale for less than $2/lb, we stock up! We also use chicken hearts and gizzards, sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, green beans, brown rice, and canned pumpkin. We cook it in the instant pot so it takes less time and makes less of a mess. It depends on sale prices sometimes, but it’s definitely under $2/lb!

Peanut is looking so good. I noticed he isn't having his loud, labored breathing like he used to, he is looking more alert and definitely is a happy doggy. Good job finding a food mixture that works for him.

My two small dogs eat homemade dog food. Our poodle is old and has very few teeth. I moved to this type of food so he would have an easier time eating. I use 3 cups brown rice, frozen boneless chicken thighs 1/2 of3 lb bag, can of green beans with the liquid, 1 bag of frozen diced sweet potatoes and 3 cups water. Put everything in my Instant Pot and cook for 22 minutes. This costs about $7 for the week, doesn’t look or smell gross like canned dog food and they love it.

I make the same in bigger batches because we have 4 dogs indoors and 4 livestock guardian dogs outdoors (these 4 are 100 pounds+). The meat I cook with the ground beef or turkey (whichever has the better price at the time of purchase)... I chop up beef heart to cook with the ground meat. With the raw liver for each dog, they also get a chicken egg from our pasture raised chickens. The livestock guardian dogs get 2 eggs each along with their crushed up egg shells. The indoor dogs, I give them a quarter teaspoon of dried ground up powdered egg shells mixed into the food. I do cook the garlic as well. No fleas. Vet says they are all very healthy, skin, coat, heart, eyes and ears are all healthy. When we are dispatching and processing quails, (we raise quail) their hearts and liver go into the dog food as well, but it will be cooked. Beef liver is given to them raw. Sometimes I use bone broth instead of water because of all the quail carcasses we save in the freezer. I make a huge batch of bone broth and freeze dry it into powder. Instant bone broth. If we have an over abundance of green beans (we grow food), the dogs will get cut up green beans too, cooked. That goes for zucchini as well. We have blueberry bushes that produce more than enough for us for the year. We freeze dry most of it. Dogs are given blueberries (reconstituted) and added to their food with the pumpkin and Greek yogurt. I haven't bought any commercial dog food since 2010, when my one dog at that time had skin allergies and there were recalls. So I started making food for her. I have a dog that is 23(she had the skin allergies) years old, the other is 17, the other is 14 and the other is 12. The LGD's are 3 years old.

So garlic is ok for dogs as long as it’s cooked? Or do you use the canned garlic? I’ve always heard it’s a big no no. But if it’s a natural flea repellent then that’s awesome.

    • @thisnthattalks1153
      @thisnthattalks1153 2 місяці тому

@t.g.7180 It's not raw and I don't use jarred garlic. I use what we grow organically. I run it through the garlic press and it gets cooked. I use about a tablespoon of if in my large batches. My pot that I make the dog food in is a 40 quart pot. I am making food for 5 dogs that are over 100lbs., a 70lb, a 24lb, and a 7lb dog. Plus we have barn cats too. I make large batches and half gets freeze dried for future meals. I also freeze dry liver treats for them.

Shannon. Do you have a meat company around you? What I mean by that is like Tyson or Purdue? Reason I ask is my neighbors have 2 large dogs and I mean they look like black bears and a couple medium size!! LOL! They have always made their food. We have a Tyson plant near us. They found out they can get "rejects" from whole turkeys to chickens for VERY cheap! They go about once a month to see what they have and often score. Of course the cooking is a bit different but they don't roast like you would at Thanksgiving. They have big stockpots and and slow cook on a simmer. Yup, the whole bird! The meat falls right off and they use the broth and all (well no bones of course). The rest is pretty much what you do but they do freeze the meat as they do get it once a month in bulk. Just an idea to help save maybe more. If not with Thanksgiving around the corner maybe grab a few extra Turkeys during the week they practically give them away if you have room in your deep freeze! I LOVE that you do this!! Great video!

My dog is 110lbs and he eats all human food no kibble fish all kinds steamed, or turkey with beef liver or giblets , he gets fresh green beans, loves summer squash, sweet potatoes, zucchini, carrots, blueberries apples watermelon with yogurt and or homemade cottage cheese instead of yogurt, garlic, he's big so he gets alot of protein with his vegetables His allergies were awful and that when I started him with the fish I have friends that bring me fresh caught for the dig and cat. It's the best way to feed. He loves a turkey stew with stock no gravy but the stock I reduce so it sticks to the meat.

I cook for our 2 dogs. It’s a must for us because our little girl is allergic to a lot of stuff. She has an allergy to all forms of poultry, Goat, Pumpkin, and Butternut squash among other environmental allergies. So, I cook ground beef, liver, rice, broccoli, green beans and a little spinach. At feeding time we add in greek yogurt and a fish oil supplement for dogs.

I started cooking for our newest dog, our older dog unfortunately grew up on store bought processed dog food. The older dog has no teeth, is overweight, even though she does not over eat and has some very bad health issues. The newest dogs teeth have stayed bright white, his coat and health is all so much better eating home cooked food than the older dog. They both eat home made only now.
I do pretty much the same as your recipe, but had not thought of the garlic, pumpkin or yogurt, so I will be adding that into his mix. I will alternate the ground turkey with fresh chicken thighs, just to change it up for them. I cook the thighs, pull them out to cool, then cook the rice, carrots and broccoli in the broth. Then I will bone the chicken thighs and mix it with the rice and veggies. The cost is way less than buying anything pre-made from the stores.
I will never buy processed food for our dogs again.

I just saved 4 dogs that were starving and chasing a truck that threw out a piece of something. I tried to get them help but no one would and I couldn't let them die. Now I need to find a less expensive way to feed them because I also have an elderly pitbull mix, 2 cats and at least 15 chickens. Thank you for the video, I'm going to research my area and see where I can get stuff less expensive.

I’ve a 7 month old Shih Tzu and I cook food for her and my niece’s own after I bought some of a certain real food for dogs and they both hated it. It was so expensive. I now cook for them weekly, I do the same as you but no liver and they’ll not eat turkey. I give them steak, stew beef, salmon and chicken, with everything you put in your dog’s meal plus spinach and bell peppers. No garlic but tumeric. Saves me money and they love it. TFS

    My recipe is very similar!
    I use:
    Ground Turkey
    Sweet potato
    Russet potato
    Carrot
    Apple
    Spinach
I use a pumpkin cranberry mix as well and a little homemade chicken broth.
Sometimes I will substitute white fish or shrimp. (It’s super cheap at Cosco).
I am definitely going to try the brown rice and Greek yogurt too.
I have also substituted green beans and broccoli
I can’t stress enough how much better she is doing on this diet. I have even started using it as a topper on our puppy’s kibble. He needs particular nutrients while his body is developing but I will definitely be feeding them both with this food when he’s grown.
    Thanks for sharing this Shannon❤😊

My daughter & I use fresh chicken thighs instead of turkey but we use what veg is cheap that week, but our dogs are small. We googled what they can have and change it up occasionally. It’s just cooks in the oven while at work and last a week. Each potion put into take-away tubs. Obviously the bones are taken out but all the juice is used. They have one small cup of biscuits to help their teeth. Basically the same. Lots cheaper xx

Great video my friend. Have about a 50 lb cocker spaniel. I have always fed him human food. His favorite fruits are pumpkin and apples. He loved sweet potatoes, carrots and green beans. He also gets cauliflower and broccoli . It all depends on what I find in the dumpster!!! I have learned that an animals organs are the best to feed a dog. In the wild, dogs and other animals go directly for a dead animals organs because they are the most nutritous part of an animal. They are so cheap! I buy chicken lovers at Walmart for $1 and a few pennies for a quart. My dog loves them. I feed them to him raw. Thank you! 🩵

I was just thinking about you earlier today, about what you said about making homeade dogfood. My dog is so picky and I end up feeling sorry for her and giving her too many treats because she will not eat any type of dry dog food. I've tried the fresh pet food from the pet stores, nope she wouldn't touch it. I thought about trying the Farmers Dog food, but it's too expensive to buy it if she snubs it. I was going to try making it myself and then started reading about all these supplements and stuff that you're supposed to buy and just got discouraged. I'm going to try your recipe and I'll let you know how it goes. 😊

I used to cook for my dogs. One lived to be 17. I think it would be beneficial to do it again. Love your videos! Have a great day!

Another thing you can use to 'bulk' up the dog food if you dont have rice, is Porridge (rolled oats) We used to make up our farm dogs food with rice or porridge and they devoured it!

When my 80 lb Golden Doodle was having stomach issues I made him hamburger and rice. He wouldn’t eat until I gave him his kibble 😏 I had also wanted to ease him into home cooking, but I’ve NEVER had a dog who ever turned down hamburger and rice🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m going to try this though and see what happens. Thanks for posting the video!

My Jack Russell Terrier, Baby (15yrs old) eats 1/3 cup of kibble, 1/3 cup rice, and a good helping of either chicken or turkey every morning. She's hardly a vegetable eater lol. At night time, she gets kibble. I am unashamedly happy to say that all of the ingredients are acquired from grocery store garbage cans and pet store dumpsters. I use very good discretion and exercise good common sense. The meat is in excellent condition! I also feed my cats cooked eggs (all obtained from garbage pails). Like Shannon, I greatly encourage those who do not dumpster dive to do so (safely). The waste in this nation is far too great not to. I still get angry nearly every time i dive.

Thank you for sharing what you feed peanut, you’re feeding him Awesome meal!!! I’ve seen the premade food and the prices omg I was fixing to buy it for my Rottie and he was a big dog! I say was until someone poisoned him.. Anyway the dog food prices were ridiculous! I’m like I’ll make it before I pay that ridiculous price.. I now have a Australian Shepherd and he’s a wild child and right now I really think it’s his food that makes him so hyper when I say hyper I mean he’s into everything and if it’s not in plain site oh you can bet on it he will make it in plain site and then it’s destroyed! I have to clean my front porch at least three times a day! We’ve never owned a dog that was this hyper! He was a Birthday gift for my husband from his granddaughter so I couldn’t say no to her. She was beyond excited for him to have Blu his eyes are crystal blue! Peanut is a beautiful dog my daughter had one and it was a girl and she was so scared she was going to get pregnant before she could get her to the vet! She got her their in time… Thanks for all that you do Shannon I have to say your work ethic is unmatched my friend!!!

I’m my husband’s dog has so many allergies, including allergies to all fowl. I follow a very similar recipe, (I use beef) but raw pack it and pressure can it in large quantities. She does so good with it and is so much happier.

Eating too much cinnamon can cause skin and digestive irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, low blood sugar, liver damage, and changes in heart rate. Inhaling cinnamon can cause coughing, choking, lung irritation, and difficulty breathing.

We have a 1 & 1/2 year old Sheltie. He eats human food because he sits and stares at everyone until they share. We had Brewers yeast with garlic tablets that we used for years. I do plan to try homemade dog food. Thank you for sharing your recipe ❤ Peanut is so cute ❤❤❤❤❤
