I love when the universe answers you. Just last night I decided that instead of spending money on high end dog food that I would start making my own. I recently found out that there is a toxin that is released during the process of high pressure cooking in dog food that is NOT good for dogs. And out of no where this video lands in my feed. 🙏❤🌍
My two small dogs love this homemade recipe and they both start circling the kitchen an hour before their usual mealtime waiting for it. Noticed an immediate improvement in their itchy skin problem and constant licking of their paws. Their coats are softer and shinier too. Thank you so much for this recipe. I freeze muffin tin size portions and then store frozen in freezer bags to serve as needed after a quick heat up in microwave.
I made this without the fish, and I ground up the dried egg shell into a powder and put it in as well. My dog goes crazy for this and seems so much better with her skin issues. And it is a lot cheaper than buying expensive dog food!
I discovered from a cookbook if you cook bones long enough they soften enough that you can turn them into a paste or mush to add to dog food. My dogs love it. Your idea about egg shells reminded me of this.

Yup. I make the food different every time (check my other dog food videos). I also feed raw meat and bones, fresh caught local fish, homemade jerky, and more.
@Sobe It Yes, they can. Now, white rice is digested slightly more easily. But, brown rice is also more nutritious. So, it is a trade off. Either way, I only add rice to thicken the mixture. He gets all the nutrients he needs from the other items in this meal (and the other foods I feed).
@@haniawilkowska6263 I don't weigh my food. I also don't weight my dogs food items. It doesn't have to be some exact percentages. What is important is to feed about proper amounts, and, to feed a great variety. Supplements are not needed. I don't take supplements. Wild animals don't take supplements. A proper diet is all that is needed.
😂 I've made something similar for my cats during COVID but with brown rice instead of oatmeal, no salt added canned chicken instead of hearts and gizzards, sweet potatoes and carrots instead of carrots and peas, no tuna and couple spoons of milk and totally came across a friend of mine munching on it in out the Tupperware in the fridge. He just looked at me over the fridge door and was like "It could use some salt." 😅
For centuries dogs survived off table scraps until last century when dry dog food was invented. Just look up what is toxic to dogs, and keep it out of your foods, and after that they can eat leftovers. Just be careful not to over feed
@@anjisocksCanned chicken isn’t interchangeable with hearts and gizzards; organ meat is important for obligate carnivores to have And you should not be feeding cats rice, grains, or any kind of fruit or vegetable; it’s not right for their bodies Not trying to criticize, but you really should research species appropriate nutrition before making the food
I used to give my pup a mix of canned dog food and whatever we had for dinner (people food). Then I realized that I was harming her with the people food with the onion, garlic etc. I’ve since switched over to making almost the same recipe as in the video and she’s seems to be doing better. Prince is adorable!!! He's well fed, loved and a happy, happy little dog!! I too, cook for my dogs. They're both rescue Chihuahua's and spoiled..... They don't like tuna or sardines, but love salmon, tilipia, chicken, beef and most vegetables --- Especially sweet potatoes, green beans, pumpkin and carrots. Pasta and rice, too.
I will start making my own dog food as well..already had plans on going up to Alaska and getting some salmon and other fish .....my parents have gardens at all their properties so for the time being I'll just steal some fruits and veggies from them til I get my greenhouses up and 🏃
I got my first dog (fully my responsibility) about 3 months ago. She’s 5 months old and I make her food every week. She gets scrambled eggs, brown rice, either chicken, beef, pork or turkey with peas, spinach, carrots and a smoothie made with plain non fat Greek yogurt, strawberries and blueberries. She gobbled it up every time. She loves it
@@jackt9857 you know damn well that’s not what I said. Just like people meal prep for themselves once a week, that’s what I do for my dog. She gets 2 meals a day plus treats.
@@MaryHartmanMaryHartman I’m honestly not sure, it varies week to week depending on where I shop from or what meat I buy. Probably around $30 to $40 but not all of the things I buy for her prepping is used in the week so it can be cheaper the next week or 2.
I do this all the time. They love it. I make huge batches for my 2 small pups. I mix it with dry food. I freeze it flat in small freezer bags (about 7-8 month supply for me). I have used combinations of the following foods: Sweet potatoes, any green vegetable, carrots, inexpensive boneless fish, ground beef/chix/turkey, beef hearts, chicken gizzards, any kind of dry bean (they're so much cheaper). Can beans (I cook them down in water to soften them and to get rid of as much salt/sugar as possible), rice (brown or white), oatmeal and eggs. I don't cook the veggies, just the boil the meats and save the broth to mix in. I chopped them down with a food processor. Mix everything in a big bowl and bag it. This all depends on the what's on sale and my budget at that time. It has served me very well. I give them vitamins and joint health supplements as well because they are senior dogs. It saves me so much money. So many recipes out there.
Hania Wilkowska if you aren’t feeding any raw bones, the dog needs calcium from something, so eggshells are a good idea. Even just 1/4 of an eggshell is a good idea.
Eggshell membrane is primarily composed of fibrous proteins such as collagen type I. 15 However, eggshell membranes have also been shown to contain glycosaminoglycans, such as dermatan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate16 and sulfated glycoproteins including hexosamines, such as glucosamine
no salt added only means the salt wasn't added by the product maker. It's a good step but a lot of times the sodium is in the product that they use to make their mix. Just read serving size and the amount of sodium before you use it regardless of that circle that says no salt added. that does not mean salt free. you don't need the broth. Add water. the gizzards and liver make the best stock that you can get.
It's great you bring this point up! Not everyone knows this! You would be surprised how many people are not educated or taught to read labels. This is a great reply monmixer. Good job.

I love this! Great idea for the chicken livers & hearts! I'm gunna make this for my dog next. She's a Pitt/lab mix & she will love this. Thank you, it's hard to feed her on a budget this is great!
Hi. I came back here to say that I have been feeding my dog a modified version of this recipe for several years now. Unfortunately the price of items at Walmart have gone up significantly but he still loves this food so much and I know what I am feeling him. He is maintaining a healthy weight and no more dark tear stains by the eyes ( Chihuahua and dachshund mix) thank you so much again for making this. I tell all my friends about this recipe. Making your pet’s food takes a little more time for the front end but it is so worth it in my opinion.
Make sure you are giving your dog a balanced diet with the nutrients they need. I'm not an expert but I don't see calcium in this. You'd need egg shells or yogurt or an additive at least.

This is the down to earth sensible version. Wait till you see people feeding their little loved ones stuff like organic shrimp and organic salmon. Now that's disgusting to see.
Definitely going to give this a try on my next paycheck! My dog loves the Beneful prepared meals - it’s the one with the chunks of meat, rice and veggies with a little bit of broth - but it’s $1.50+ for one little thing of it or $20 for 12 and I can’t afford to spend so much on so little. This recipe will last me at least one and a half weeks which is what I’m hoping for, maybe even two weeks if my other dog (who belongs to my mother) doesn’t try and steal his 😉 PS. My chihuahua is roughly the same chunkiness as Prince and it’s very comforting seeing another dog as thick. When we bought him he was very overweight and it’s been 6-7 years and he’s still chunky but definitely losing some of it.
Prince was only switched to my food a few months before this video. He was on kibble most his life. My dog is in my other dog food vides. Good luck on your homemade dog food journey! Remember, this is not all I feed.
I make my own dog food. Making it now, I buy the 10-pound chicken parts thigh/drumsticks. I added today barley, brown rice, tuna, kidney beans and spinach. I always add chopped sweet potato, zucchini, carrots, and peas, Then I brought from dollar general 2 cup containers and dish it out in them and freeze them. I take out two or three days' worth and put in refrigerator. I worry about it spoiling. Then heat in microwave, they love it. I use the insta pot. Cook all the meat and remove when done, then add rice and other ingred when I take it out, then all vegs, and cook it while the meat cools. Then I shred meat or chop it smaller, mix everything altogether in a large bowl and divide into the plastic rubber made type dishes, seal and freeze. Thanks for sharing. My dogs are way healthier than before and not overweight.
Im not able to always do home cooked foods for my dog. But I did wanna start adding in SOME home cooked meals for her. To make sure shes really getting good foods, since I dont trust "dog food" and this is really helping me with ideas on what to do for her :) thank you
I did not realize how easy and inexpensive it was to make your own dog food at home. I made this today and will continue to keep making it for my dogs, Thank you! I have a question though, I know raw chicken feet is good for dogs but what about cooked chicken feet? I added chicken feet to this & I’m hoping its not bad for them.

My dog used to suffer with struvite (on and off with medication) till I decided to cook for him instead. I copy some of your recipes and tips and he likes it all!
My dog gets struvite crystals too. I'm overwhelmed with cooking/raw, and the pre-made raw is so expensive:( May I ask what other recipes you use? Do you test your dog's urine PH to make sure it's in line. I'm scares to change, but with her allergies it's time.
@@stacy9694 Hi Stacy, I'm sorry to hear your dog has struvites too. It can be tricky to cook for them but after trying home cooked meals, I found that he prefers simple meals, just meat, rice, and veggies. I just boil ground meat (chicken, beef, or pork) twice, discarding the broth. I steam green leafy vegetables then mix it with the meat and plain rice. I sometimes use brown or white, whichever is available. As for the serving, I now do combination of dog food and the home cooked meals. I just wash the dog food prior to mixing it with the home cooked meal to remove the flavouring that companies usually add. I also add water to the food to increase his water intake. I hope you find what works well with you and your pup. Prayers 🤗
Well, actually I didn't feed it to my friend...I just left the kitchen for a moment and when I returned to see him eating the dog's food & enjoying it I didn't have the heart to tell him what he was eating. Boy was the dog confused/pissed!! Ha!

We have been feeding Murphy ❤️, it’ll be three years old this August and he is an intact male Cocker spaniel… We have been making his food at home and using chicken livers, gizzards and hearts, beef livers and hearts, chicken, sirloin, and pork. He loves it all everything is great. Variety of vegetables and brown rice, oatmeal, or potato. Sweet potato too! Some kale is great from the garden as well! Started out doing this and freezing it. We would get six weeks worth of food out of our mix easily at two meals a day. We started canning those ingredients a year ago. The protein. And make it from scratch every meal. Yeah, spoil just a bit. Thinking about going back to this idea; however, I was concerned about losing power in the Northeast. Peace

@Cherish It you can. My cane corso is on a raw diet. Aim for 80% muscle meat 10% bone 5% liver and 5% of another secreting organ. Check online for a raw dog feed calculator. Hope this helps
@Cherish It just make sure you have *all* the nutrients needed for a growing puppy in your homemade food. This might call for some supplements or some superfood ingredients that will be a bit more expensive than this recipe. Dried kelp is a common superfood ingredient for dogs, and can be found on amazon. Also for your pup, I highly suggest treating it with 1-2 raw bones a week. Raw bones are easier on the tummy and they don't break into shards or splinter as much. They are also fantastic for cleaning your pups teeth; tearing the muscle on the bone flosses their teeth and the bone marrow help scrape away plaque 👌
Thank you! I have 3 dogs (2 German Shepherds and 1 Elkhound mix) and have been searching for a budget-friendly way to cook homemade food for them. This looks like it'll work :)

That thing with the not letting him eat till she says so, it's a good way to assert your leadership and define yourself as Alpha, the one in charge. Dog's are sometimes fed this way for behavioural reasons, but overall it never hurts to assert yourself as Alpha, it's only going to make your dog respect you more and listen better. Just thought I'd explain the theory behind that. It's not meant to be mean or confuse, he looked like he was just overly excited. I have a feeling this is something he's pretty well versed in, it's just that they never behave on camera the way they normally would...always gotta be making fools out of their humans. Training? What training? Sit you say? Never heard of it.💁😂😂😂
Wait...Prince... so excited... Just go. ❤️😍😂 Thank you so much for the tips! So glad you popped up in my search. You’re making a difference for this community.

Peas, zucchini, summer squash, and even the weeds. I will be adding in organ meats as well for him but I am thinking about turning those into a dehydrated snack for him. Plus I save the fats from the top of soups for him as he is a hyper small breed puppy and I know he needs the extra calories. I like the balance of your recipes. I have seen some that have such lean meats and no extra fats added. I cook all of our meals from scratch and switch up our macros pretty much the same way.

I do this all the time. They love it. I make huge batches for my 2 small pups. I mix it with dry food. I freeze it flat in small freezer bags (about 7-8 month supply for me). I have used combinations of the following foods:
Sweet potatoes, any green vegetable, carrots, inexpensive boneless fish, ground beef/chix/turkey, beef hearts, chicken gizzards, any kind of dry bean (they're so much cheaper).

Nice recipe. You could also try adding in the crushed egg shells for calcium and phosphorous.
I have many dog food videos, check them out! In most my recipes I do add eggs & shells.
Shells dont really have much phosphorous! They have too much calcium
Hania Wilkowska if you aren’t feeding any raw bones, the dog needs calcium from something, so eggshells are a good idea. Even just 1/4 of an eggshell is a good idea.

no salt added only means the salt wasn't added by the product maker. It's a good step but a lot of times the sodium is in the product that they use to make their mix. Just read serving size and the amount of sodium before you use it regardless of that circle that says no salt added. that does not mean salt free. you don't need the broth. Add water. the gizzards and liver make the best stock that you can get.

This recipe will last me at least one and a half weeks which is what I’m hoping for, maybe even two weeks if my other dog (who belongs to my mother) doesn’t try and steal his 😉
PS.

Prayers 🤗

It breaks my heart for those who lost a dog by feeding them, simply because a brand valued profit over safety. Simply tragic and agree, when we make it, we know exactly what’s in it. So glad you popped up in my search. You’re making a difference for this community.
Watching this in 2024 and crying at the early 2020 prices :' Thank you for the recipe though and I am going to give this a try.
How much food and how many times a day? I have 2 dogs that are about 35 to 40lbs.
Thank you for these informative dog food videos.
I feed such a wide variety of foods. From home cooked, to raw meat and bones, fresh caught fish, homemade muscle and organ meat jerky and more. I don't measure my food, or my dogs.
how do you storage the homemade dog food? and for how long? how do you feed your dog? do you need to reheat it or room-temperature?
ABSOLUTELY. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THIS AS WELL.
I home cook as well, I feed room temperature as they don't have hot meals naturally. Its fully cooked so...
“ go just go” Ha ha ha you guys are so cute 🥰 I love the recipe I can’t wait to try it!! I never would’ve thought of sardines, giblets, and hearts. that is a good source of calcium bc the bones. Excellent video
FYI Herb Ox granulated bouillon is salt free and quite good. Walmart sells the chicken and beef. They make a box of small packets, not sure of the price, and a jar with 26 servings for around $3.50. It's worth it.
Finally trying this recipe for my doggo tonight!! Hope she likes it 😊 thanks for posting!
love this and your pup Prince is so cute
Hey Mikey! He likes it!!
I'm gonna have to try this with my picky ass dog.
Dat first comment sounds like something only a "Boomer" knows/remembers. Life! Ha!
Careful. Your pup will never want to go back to processed food haha
I so want to try this, Raven is getting older and so picky, can’t get her to hardly eat, but that would last oh 3 days. Btw, wonder at first might need to go slow so no diarrhea. I so wish I would have started making their foods from day 1. But we will start now, maybe help her with her soreness too etc. I’ll have to watch your other videos too. Thank you for sharing
I was inspired by your home made dog food videos. I tried to find broths that do not contain garlic and onion powders or juice and even many bone broths contain garlic and onion. So, I buy beef bones and make my own bone broth. Our furbabies do so much better with home made dog food. Thank you for the inspiration and wonderful videos. We have weened ours off kibble and they LOVE home made😁😊
If you add the foods to the mixture I think making broth is a waste of time. Just use water Broth is all about flavour for human food.
@@ChrisNixon13 🤔 True, but the video is about making home made dog food, not human food. Thanks anyway😂
Awww, he gobbled it up. I'm watching this with volume turned up and my dog Prince kept sitting when you told yours to sit.🥰
With those ingredients I would eat it. I could make something scrumptious with that. those lucky dogs! You're a good dad for those pups.
Beats $40 for a 10lb bag.
@Bailey Vaughan Dam you dogs eat better than me, but yeah try Gordon's if you don't have a warehouse membership card.
Love the dog food but you guys need to.understand how to communicate with prince lol I'm no purely positive but ugh I hate hearing owners machine gun commands. Ut thanks so much for the dog food recipes very useful
Love when people tell you how to live your life, fantastic.
@@lopria read a few books dog training isnt rocket science and its just as annoying to the dog as it is to any one constantly repeating themselves . been a k9 handler for years it gets annoying anyone. Its great when idiots like you rule the internet.
I don't have a pet or plan on getting one but I still watched the entire video because it was entertaining
I have been feeding our puppy what we eat mostly as we eat lots of the same things and he does not really like his kibble. I noticed that garlic was one of the ingredients in his kibble so I researched a bit and found it is not as toxic as I thought it was to dogs. I have been saving our bones to make a bone broth and grind the bones for bone meal. He loves eating raw veggies and will take them as we picked fresh from the garden. One week sweet potato and fish the next, carrot and beef, and so forth. Interestingly enough or puppy has shown an aversion to bananas and peanut butter which is one of my family's favorite snacks. I am slowly disguising it into his food with success. Thanks for the great recipes.
prince is a little bit fat :))
thank you very much for the videos
Chicken liver, kidney is high in fat.
@@khirsah666 fat is energy and important for many body functions. Too many carbs tax the liver which creates more fat. This is why alcoholics have huge stomaches.
Prince is my wife's dog. He has only been on homemade and raw foods since about a year ago. He has been slowly losing weight in a healthy manner since starting. You can see my dog in my other dog food videos.
He's not fat, he's fluffy. And adorable.
