Probably known by alot of people, but Defiler Mound and Greater Spire sounds were actually swapped on accident without any of the developers noticing until after release, and then it was never fixed.
For me the shield battery will always be the scariest sound. I don't know why but the thought of immense power from a structure that recharges badly damaged protoss units and and seeing what the Zerg to them in the first mission gives me thoughts of protoss's last stand things like that.
I think you can tell something about the quality of the sound effects if you can distinctly tell which building is which just by hearing it. God these are so nostalgic.
It's a facility used to basically lobotomize criminals and reprogram them to be fighters who just take orders and don't mind using drugs that literally kill them to gain a boost. I'd say it's not a fun place :P

Control Tower uses Comsat Station's Scanner Sweep sound, but pitched a little lower and has some radio beeping in the background as well. Citadel of Adun sounds really similar to StarCraft II's Stargate.
0:43 - I had a dream one time where I heard this sound while inside a Protoss structure. One of the rooms had a large rectangular vat, spanning probably 30 feet, of cyan liquid, much like the color you see in Protoss buildings. So I did what any sane person would - I used it as a jacuzzi.

Considering the fact that Defiler Mounds have screaming mutalisks in them, I think Blizzard mixed the Defiler Mound and Spire sounds up and just didn't bother to fix it. Same thing between Spawning Pool and Evolution Chamber.
TheBrainandBrawn Pool sound's like water, the Chamber doesn't. just some errant "Zergy" sfx. Honestly, the only other structure that would actually make sense is the Robotic's bay's sound.

If you listen to the Defiler Mount carefully you can hear a Muta cry, it's not something you can hear in the game to well since you're clicking like crazy and you don't notice the details. Additionally, the greater spire has the Defiler growl

I think the Command Center sound was intended for a "Raider Factory" that would have produced the scrapped Raider unit. The filename is "trfwht0", "rf" could bean "Raider Factory", whether that was a placeholder name or a final name. I think the Stargate sound is actually unused, too, though unlike the Command Center it's named as such.
The Stargate sound is indeed unused for some reason, never understood why. and yeah there were supposed to be neutral-hostile mercenaries but the concept was dropped during development

It's reminiscent of guardians when they first hatch. I think the regular spire and defiler mound could be swapped imo. Just makes sense to match the muta noise with the structure that allows you to build mutas. Though I'm sure the other swap has been confirmed somewhere.
And I though the fleet beacon was a defensive structure similar to the Red Alert 2 Grand Cannon. Teleported a bunch of those things and not later that, lings and hydralisks are already swarming my base xD
