How to create depth when painting fur in acrylics - painting curly/frizzy/long fur tutorial

- In this video, I run through my process of creating depth when painting fur using acrylics. The fur in this video is a poodle ear and there's various different textures of fur going on from woolly tufts, long curly strands and poofy, frizzy areas. They all need slightly different applications. I also use glazing in this video which I haven't really shown previously. Glazing is a good technique for layer building to create depth.
I also talk a little about the paints and brushes I use. I hope you will find it helpful and please be sure to leave feedback in the comments as it is always welcome. I do have some limitations with regards to camera and that sort of thing. In time, I may be able to address these limitations but they aren't necessarily something I can affird to address soon but I am likely already aware of them anyway.

You are amazing. Someone said the portrait looks like a photograph. No, it looks like the real dog will jump off the page and lick your hand! Such detail and such patience.
I’m a busy portrait artist, I’m pretty good…but you have no peers, your work is sublime…I’m a massive fan x
Thank you. :)
I love your art, It is explained so clearly. I have been trying to perfect hair/fur for ages. A tutorial for beginners would be amazing. Thank you for your tutorials.
Glad you found my explanations clear as I seem to forget how to speak English when I press record lol..
Love the instruction in this video. Would love to see more videos on creating depth in fur. Thank you so much and have a wonderful day!! :)
Thanks and you're welcome...:)
Fantastic, looking forward to other videos

Wow best tutorial ever I’m a dog groomer and love to paint animals, dogs in particular I just subscribed. Fabulous thank you for sharing your amazing skills 🫶🏼✌🏼🦘🚐
Thank you and glad to be of help...xx
Very helpful video. Would love more on how to paint longer hair.
I will keep this in mind for a future video idea thank you...
Would love the beginner stages video❤❤❤
Omg this look like a photo, it is GORGEOUS! ❤️❤️❤️❤️…. Something that I would like to have is the patience of some artists. It requires a lot of layers to get a result like that but I am so anxious to do that and this is why I am never satisfied with my paintings.
No need to be anxious. Nobody else ever needs to see it anyway...just do it. Anxiety causes us to not live our lives...I know firsthand all about that lol.
@@TmHudsonArt You are right!!! Thank you again for this amazing tutorial! ❤️
Thank you so much for sharing your gift with us. Your work is phenominal, and you have such a calming way to teach. Have you given thought to producing dvds? I am always concerned about the videos becoming unavailable.. I had taken a couple of online classes...which eventually were no longer available to reference. Disappointing. Thank you again. Amazing in every way!!!
Not thought about DVDs no. I do save all my raw footage on google drive.
Glad you find my teaching helpful. I always feel like I lose the ability to speak English when i press record lol.
Wow, WOW, W O W!! The texture of those ears😮👏🏼! I wish I had had access to your videos when I attempted to paint my daughter’s dog. I gave up and did him in coloured pencil instead😅. The picture turned out very well, but I really want to be able to paint hyper-realism with acrylics, too. Your work is outstanding!
I think I'd find these a lot harder in coloured pencil personally...😂
@@TmHudsonArt coloured pencil is very, very slow but that’s what I am used to and the slow pace means I can fix a problem area before I’ve made a big mess, lol. Light over dark (ie. the fur inside cat ears and those pesky light whiskers!) is a challenge with coloured pencil, but generally fur is quite fun to draw.
Absolutely beautiful
Thank you...:)
Beautiful!!!👍😃♥️♥️
Thank you....:)
Absolutely superb!
Thanks...:)
Thanks for your awesome videos. Yes, definitely make some video that are aimed more at beginners, that would be wonderful! Thanks again! FYI, I think your English is perfect! :)
Thank you 😊 great technique 👏
Thank you..:)
In another life, my partner and I had a frame shop.
My questions have to do with your final product when it comes to framing. Is your paper fully coated with paint? Does it need to be behind glass? What kind of protective coating do you put on the final product?
I am enjoying watching your technique! Please beginner tutorials would be incredible. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and your time❤️
The paper is fully covered in paint and yes, it needs to be behind glass. As it is behind glass, I never put anything on it like varnish. This is just a personal thing as I work on paper. If I worked on canvas or panel then I would...
Thank you ma’am I’m learning a lot from you. I appreciate you sharing
@@TmHudsonArt ignore my previous question on a newer video. Now I have the answer about the framing.😊
Fabulous work
Thank you....:)
Love your videos and tips, even though I work with coloured pencils 🤣😘 new subbie here.. look forward to future videos xx
Thank you......:)
Sweet. Love that. 😎💪
You are just an amazing, amazing artist. I love to watch you paint 💕 One thing that I would hope to see is a list of the colors you use in each painting. Thank you for being so detailed in your voice-overs, as well. I think beginner tutorials would be very helpful!
Hi thanks for the feedback. I think when i start doing more dedicated tutorials, i will be better with mentioning colours. I painted this months ago but only made this tutorial this month so it's hard to remember..I just have to guess....but then the colours used would not always be the same anyway so not necessarily of use for another painting of a grey poodle.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make your videos. I just found you and subscribed. You are absolutely an amazing artist. Your work looks like a photograph. I just started painting dogs over the last year for family and friends. In just the two videos that I watched I have learned so much! You are a great teacher. You are really good and explaining things..and I just love your accent. Where are you located? I can't wait to watch more of your videos!
Hi thank you and glad that you find the videos helpful. I always worry I'm not finding the most eloquent way of explaining things when the record button is pressed LOL. My accent is Yorkshire and that is where I am in the UK. I try to tone it down slightly for the vids as it can be a bit hard to understand for people in other countries but it is known to be a friendly and warm sounding accent....we have a lot of call centres in Yorkshire haha...
The way you explained this made so much more sense yo me. Let's see if it helped!😂
i would love if you make a full lenth video so i can see the whole process...😁
I think this is something i will consider as an idea for a patreon for sure...
Amazing video - is that a Rotherham accent by any chance? My hometown!
haha it is....I get a lot of comments about my accent...
@@TmHudsonArtfantastic! You have a new fan. My parent and sister are still there. I moved to Bicester 16 years ago 😢 will be making my way through the other videos 😊
Brilliant work lass....an' a can understand every word tha sez......( from anuther Rotherham artist )
