I would've wanted DF to do it though, maybe they're saving it for the handheld comparison since that's the mode where xenoblade suffers.

Nintendo should add a boost mode on settings and ad a little disclaimer saying the boost mode could decrease console lifetime. And let people choose, if boost or not the switch.
The temps he reported are no where close to the level that would cause hardware issues. Hell, the there's room for an actual overclock at those temps, remember this is just running at the Tegra's intended clock speed.
Problem is, if the non-throtlled clocks were standard, developers would have overstepped them to the same degree they overstep the default Switch and we'd still be getting low frame rates and blurry graphics. Look at the Saints Row test, handheld mode running with a much higher frame rate. They could have had that in docked but pushed it too far. Most devs will push too far
>most devs will push too far I wish they'd push to 60fps. You're dead right, they love to make it pretty, and don't tend to care if it tops out at not-quite-30fps.
Even more than FPS for me *smoothness of motion* is latency from input to visible difference on the screen. All the extra rendering processes requires more time to render. So, it's possible to have 60 FPS solid but still have to wait 15 frames until your inputs are expressed on the screen or in audio.
Exactly. This is game development. People love to blame hardware and other shit but the fact of the matter is it's all down to developers. There are times where hardware makes a developers job much harder but it's still up to them to configure their game properly, on top of optimizing it to avoid severe issues and many of them don't put in the effort to do so, or they just ship the game with issues, thinking they're not too significant. And sometime they aren't I for one like it in some games when a developer sacrifices a small amount of performance issues for better visuals. In some games it simply doesn't matter. Frankly without these framerate tools that DF has, no one would give any where near as much of a shit about framerate as they do now. Framerate is not that important.
@dstns That's often not possible, for the same reason the system is struggling to maintain 30FPS. Even if the game could run at a 60FPS, that doesn't do much good if its not consistent. So what devs usually do is cap the frame rate and get as much out of the visuals as they can instead.
I thinked of that too why i pay 300 for a device and they lock me out of the potential of the device tbh its already clarified that they didnt downclock the hardware cause of heat but for battery longevity there is ways if you search youtube to run stock speeds but you need to install software like atmosphère a linux ubuntu is also possible will try it later when i buy my joy cons cause used the spares from a friend and he needed em back might try to modify it in terms of cooling too honestly 67c temp aint nothing for stock i wonder how much real oc it can take before crashing

I feel that going forward, instead of releasing a brand new system, Nintendo could just release newer iterations of the Nintendo Switch much like a smartphone. Great video, as always! I notice you guys focus the camera on the chair, rather than on Rich. This makes him looks a little blurry, while the chair is super crisp!
It's incredible to see how many of these games are limited by the CPU component of Tegra X1 rather than the GPU. I remember a bit of shock horror when the clock speeds leaked prior to the release of the console, and these were indeed justified. I wonder why Nintendo sacrificed docked CPU performance in favor of absolute parity between docked and handheld, rather than offering developers the option to set the CPU to run at handheld speeds when docked like they can with the GPU and memory - based on the figures you've given, the console seems to have enough cooling capacity to support that scenario. I look forward to part 2 of this!
The GPU is a big limiting factor in terms of games that use dynamic res though. Using a higher GPU clock def helps games like Doom and Wolf 2 in terms of resolution. Interestingly Youngblood has CPU based drops while Wolf 2 was mainly GPU.
@@VexAcer Check out Modern Vintage Gamer's video on the matter, he found similar findings with Wolf 2 - overclocking the CPU yielded massive performance gains.
Interesting to see that they are so cpu bottlenecked indeed. Sad thing is that means both cpu and gpu performance has to be increased to push the console to run games in native 720p/1080p.
@@SteelSkin667Massive performance gains compared to what exactly? The game already runs pretty consistently at 30 on the recent patch and the area he showed was never a demanding spot (ex. Demanding areas would be courtroom fight or the new orleans area with its heavy fog effects). His video does demonstrate improvement to resolution, but thats the result of upping GPU clocks, nothing to do with the CPU.
@@VexAcer If I'm honest, I do not own that game for the Switch, so I have no point of reference personally. However I'm bringing it up because that game in that video was the first time I learned about a game being CPU-limited on the Switch, and it was still pointed out as locking the frame-rate to 30, which presumably wouldn't have been the case before. That's not to say that all games are necessarily limited by the CPU, that would indeed depend not only on the game but sometimes even on the scene being played in said game.
I'd like to see XC2 and possibly more games with dynamic resolutions tested but these videos are pretty interesting coming from the pros. Can't wait for more!

I am genuinely looking forward to seeing how far Nintendo can go with the Switch concept. I would love for them to stick with the Switch line and now that they see the concept is successful, find a way to push hardware. Perfect timing! I just hacked my Switch and started looking into heavy OC Right now i'm underclocking some light games and apps to save battery. I also pushed Fire Emblem: Three Houses to next to the absolute max in docked. Currently, the CPU clocks are 1 level below max with GPU and RAM to the max and it's been pretty great.
Wow, that was really interesting! When I saw those docked OC’d numbers I was immediately thinking that the system fan wouldn’t have been up to the task, but apparently it is! So it looks like Nintendo really could uncap the docked mode frequencies to their nominal X1 specification without issue. The battery would charge slower, possibly (and maybe that would bump the temps up? I can’t imagine to more than 70C, which is a “plenty safe load temperature for Desktop x86 CPUs” at the very least). Wonder what the reason they’re holding back from implementing nominal docked clocks is-especially since (as I had theorized based on my Tegra X2 kit) it doesn’t really appear to be device design at all. Looking forward to the handheld video, DF!
It'll be to protect the battery, more heat could degrade the battery cells as well as potential risk of the battery over heating to the point it swells.

Even with both overclocks it still only increases to 67 degrees so why not? personally, I'd only want it for higher resolution in some games like Xenoblade, Doom Rocket League, and wolfenstein 2. Performance wise I'm really not bothered by anything on the switch but the blurriness really bothers me
Love how you pronounced Wolfenstein properly! Also seeing those OC videos all the time really make me think that the Switch is the most interesting console of this generation, even beyond games.
I say that if Nintendo wants to extract more performance out of a future "Switch Pro" they should go for a 6-core approach with the same clock presets. This would allow them to keep old titles the same (by running them on 4 cores only) but allow better fps on future ones, even allowing unthinkable ports to the Switch to be made. About the GPU, well the power budget would be what limits the change, being a 25% cuda cores bump not out of reach at all, along with 6GB GDDR6 (to sip power), going from a 32-bit/25GBps memory bus to a 48-bit/87GBps one.
Great video mate, cheers for taking the time out up to compare the various GPU/CPU overclock profiles. Keen to see how this works with the handheld mode (when forcing docked profile on handheld) and how it impacts battery.
Switch normally runs at 1020MHz CPU / 768MHz GPU when Docked. I think 1224MHz(OC) CPU / 691MHz(UC) GPU when Docked option is useful for CPU bound games. It won't drain the battery and generate heat. 612MHz CPU / 76MHz(!) GPU may still work perfectly in few 2D games. Power efficiency can be improved.
Great video. Very informative. Question though, Panic Button are truly wizards of the craft and iD Tech 6 running on a Switch is truly a sight to behold. But the one game I 'm playing on Switch that never ceases to amaze me is Warframe which was also ported by Panic Button. I'd like to see a overclock scenario on Switch running Warframe to see how it would improve. On most planet missions running solo or with two people, Switch in portable mode running the game holds up really well. But it's on the Plains of Eidolon with 4 people when performance takes a nose dive. Panic Button are great developers, but even they are still bound by the limitations of the technology. Bottom line for me, I love the current Switch, it has proven to be one of, if not THE greatest gaming devices I've ever purchased or used going back 35 years or so. But Switch Pro can't come soon enough.
It really makes me want the switch Pro/plus/XL or whatever it ends up being called. I want to see what the switch can do when it's given everything possible to run as good as possible. Much like the OG XBone and PS4 I'm sure it's being held back due to its CPU most of all.
Very informative. Thanks. Perhaps the wrong place to ask, but have you got any idea if the HDMI latency has been improved on the Switch 2019 version? I’ve had this nagging feeling that the latency might be a frame or so, compared to handheld mode. I might be imagining? Also, any info on improved Bluetooth range on the refreshed Switch? I’ve had so many dropouts when a leg or something is blocking the airspace between at least 4 pair of joycons and the switch, even when I’m really close.
The new Switch isn't hackable, so unfortunately some of those questions will remain unanswered for the near future. Great stuff though, I had no idea the impact to temps was that low on docked mode, I might experiment myself with this. My Switch is already banned from online anyway.
After watching this video has made me realise the Switch is weaker than I thought it was. Only 3 CPU cores are available for development and are pretty slow at that. Plus only 3GB RAM for developers. So in reality its just a minor bumped up Wii U.
The X1 have a weird CPU, two clusters but only one is visible by the OS. This is the cluster of big cores who give tasks to the small cores, the OS don't even know they are there. If these small cores are there inside of the Switch, why not using the 4th big core for games ? I don't understand. Switch does have the original Tegra X1 right ? Switch GPU is far better than Wii U though, also Wii U only have 1 GB of RAM for games. It's bandwidth is only 12,3 GB / s compared to 25,6 GB / s on Switch with at least 3 GB for games. (5 GB on PS4 ?) It's a decent evolution for a handheld.
Very cool video, thanks for this analysis- I hope that we see a 1200mh cpu performance profile soon as it really appears that it would make a difference in many scenarios.

So it's not really an over-clock, it's just turning off Nintendo's under-clock... With performance being the main problem for most of the titles, it makes you wonder why they went so conservative with clock speeds.
@@lucaspereirahmj but it seems to be doing just fine with temps in docked. Battery life in portable is probably the reason tho. Maybe they did the clocks for handheld and then adjusted the docked clocks so you get a similar experience, instead of docked being better than handheld.
If you really think about it. Most people who buy the switch are kids, I’m not saying all, but about 50-60% of them are kids. Now if they made the new switch and said “we no longer overclock the cpu so it runs better and the FPS is better”. Versus the battery is doubled. You could see how making the FPS more consistent whilst increasing battery life would me more appealing to the majority of switch owners then making the 30 FPS games run 45 FPS.
@unrepeatable raddish I know. I'm saying that they might have reduced docked so far, so it's comparable to handheld (taking into consideration the screen size differences).
The original 20nm Tegra X1 would get too hot for the Switch at stock speeds. That doesn't excuse why they didn't bump up the clock speeds for the newer chip though.
I saw a modern vintage gaming video on this and he said Nintendo could safely overclock the switch’s APU to bump the frame rates to a steady 30 or 60 on other games. It really is sad that breath of the wild dips into the teens at the master sword area. It’s a pretty game. I don’t need the best visuals but it’s unacceptable for any game to go below 30
Please include ambient temperature readings with the temp measurements! It's summer right now, so sometimes my room temperature is 15°C higher than during the rest of the year. If you get 67°C at 20°C ambient, then that would be getting dangerously close to the 83°C tj max when it's a hot day here.
Your should buy a OPOLAR labtop cooling fan I have on on my switch for dock mode and it does great job. You could also look into getting the switch cooling dock drop in mod I have that also my switch runs about 9 degree f cooler with that mod not including the fan. The fan also a model with a thermostat in it cand will read the temp of the exhaust. Trust me works great tends to run only a few degrees over room temp now. I put the stuff on my switch because it has gotten so hat it has warped the tablet.
The only thing the switch needs to succeed continuously is one very very important thing...NINTENDO. NINTENDO have seriously listened and learned hard from Wii u and previous hardware in the regards to proving one important thing for me....power is only relevant when a system has crap games or no games worth playing. Switch is my favourite system of all time for one important reason, its brought fun back into gaming for me and put technology numbers aside and got on with the most important thing for a gaming system. Games.
Ironic considering the main appeal of the Switch is that it is the most powerful handheld ever made by a wide margin and therefore is able to run full console games.
It would be cool if it had dynamic clocks instead of locked. Like, having a power limit at ~15w and let the GPU and CPU manage it's clocks so if a scene needs more CPU power and it has low GPU usage, lowers the clocks of the GPU and then up the CPU. Also a "boost mode" at ~20w would be asome (with a ton of warranty void and disclaimers ofc)
You know with Saints Row 3, it's just the devs being a little lazy then. If they implement a dynamic resolution that scales to 720p when needed but with 1080p cap, we can have a solid 30FPS cap. Hell peeps should be able to choose for a more aggressive dynamic resolution that works for 60 FPS most of the time. Dunno what they were trying to do with this port tho.
Looks like they were only focusing on making it look as pretty as possible. But at the end of the day, performance is what makes a game look its best. A locked 30fps for 900p would've been the best compromise. It wouldn't be the first to run that way, anyways.
Honestly they could just implement some cooling to the dock (just make it out of aluminium and provide some method of increasing contact between switch and dock) and they could easily make the tegra run at the higher clock speeds in docked mode.

I for one like it in some games when a developer sacrifices a small amount of performance issues for better visuals. In some games it simply doesn't matter.
Frankly without these framerate tools that DF has, no one would give any where near as much of a shit about framerate as they do now. Framerate is not that important.
@dstns
That's often not possible, for the same reason the system is struggling to maintain 30FPS.
Even if the game could run at a 60FPS, that doesn't do much good if its not consistent. So what devs usually do is cap the frame rate and get as much out of the visuals as they can instead.
@Tea Bag because they know better than anyone that framerate is not that important. You wouldn't give a shit if digital foundry didn't tell you to
I would like an official option to use the clocks of docked mode in portable, like a performance mode.

That's not to say that all games are necessarily limited by the CPU, that would indeed depend not only on the game but sometimes even on the scene being played in said game.
remember back when the switch came out there was a rumor that said the switch would get a boost to 900mhz in a update, yeah
I'd like to see XC2 and possibly more games with dynamic resolutions tested but these videos are pretty interesting coming from the pros. Can't wait for more!

Running custom firmware has zero (0) ban risks when used with an emuMMC.

I actually don't know what the background music is this time, heck.
When you find out let me know! I've heard this somewhere else and it's driving me crazy!
Basically, it’s memory bandwidth that’s limiting us not the actual performance of the CPU/GPU.
They should’ve put 6 or 8GB in.
I wonder will Nintendo target and copyright block this video, like they have for hundreds of other videos looking at Switch exploits and homebrew....

You’re right, of course. I still dream of a stronger switch haha
Even with both overclocks it still only increases to 67 degrees so why not?
personally, I'd only want it for higher resolution in some games like Xenoblade, Doom Rocket League, and wolfenstein 2. Performance wise I'm really not bothered by anything on the switch but the blurriness really bothers me
Nope that won't end well. Would love to run Crysis on switch and see how good it really is.
@@Legion849 crysis hasnt been the standard in almost a decade

Even 8 cores at 1ghz should be possible, with a 10nm chip. If they could double the CUDA cores it would be awesome (but I am dreaming here).
76mhz gpu can't run anything
I was waiting for this video for a while, so happy to finally see you guys do it! Well done as always, so much detail, but still succinct!

Battery Life and Overheating

Fantastic stuff DF. Great work :-D 👍.
@@weaverquest myself I always considered the selling point being it a successful attempt at a hybrid system.
How much higher can the new, more efficient switch be overclocked? What are the performance gains?
Are they even moddable?
They have yet to be hacked & probably won't be for a long time.
