Screen tint discrepancies probably comes down to how the individual unit was calibrated, in her recent video Erica Griffin bought two units of the new Mariko version and there was quite a noticeable difference between their screens.

Basically, they already been making 4 variants for years for low, medium, high and ultra settings for PC. Current consoles chipsets are similar to PC now, unlike in the past. So it's not as difficult as it was in the past. You basically make a switch port and then you just test which of the 4 settings do best on each skew
Well, maybe switch dock mode might be equal to switch pro portable mode. Also, we could extrapolate to a home only switch, with pro dock mode. It would be 4 product in the switch family (og, lite, pro, home only) with 3 switch profiles. Doesnt seem that bad..
@@Deliveredmean42 The Switch Lite has identical performance to the full-sized Switch, though. It just stays permanently in portable mode. The only differences would be in terms of input support. A "Pro" switch need only add one additional performance profile, because its portable mode could use the same performance profiles as the docked OG Switch. Unless it was a non-mobile device (the counterpart to the Lite), in which case it would only have the one new performance state.
With the Switch the games run dynamically so any faster hardware as far as I'm aware would be taken advantage of automatically, they are made that way because of how the switch works between docked and handheld mode. Some games might need to have a setting added perhaps if you wanted more graphical fidelity but as far as fps it wouldn't be a necessity. The PS4 pro boost mode also works dynamically with each game running at a higher fps. Think of it like a PC game, the game will run as fast as the hardware permits, graphical settings can be changed via a menu which could also be added if required to a switch game if you wanted to give the option to use the extra horse power for graphical fidelity rather than fps. I think most would just prefer and be happy with smooth 60fps though.
Interesting that temperatures are almost the same. I think nintendo made the fans less aggressive because they could afford to do that with the new chip producing less heat, and also because the fan would pull less power from the switch the lower speed it's running. Win-win really, the switch didn't get that hot in the first place so the same temps won't matter but the fans being slower also means the battery life we're getting is partially due to that.
@I Should Change My Name Certainly will mah boi, that overclocking is what all true tinkerers strive for! @@floppyD Yes, I know. The refresh is also supposed to patch the hardware exploits that the OG Switch has afterall. It will take a while until one will be found.
With how significantly more efficient this is, they need to add a boost mode. If they are able to nearly cut the power consumption in half, there is a good bit of headroom. Give the user the option to sacrifice the extra battery for more performance
Recently upgraded from my old switch to the V2 and I will say that it performs significantly better as well. I tested it with Mortal Kombat 11. Playing with the characters Shang Tsung vs Noob Saibot on the Beast Pen level would wreck the frame rate on my previous switch. So when I upgraded I tested this level out immediately with the same character picks, and I am confident in reporting that the frame rate is super smooth on the V2 model. I really wish someone with the proper gear would test MK11 performance on both models. This game used to frustrate me due to it's performance and I can now enjoy playing in that particular level. Anyone else experiencing performance gains like this? I also want to add that I did this comparison in handheld mode. Unfortunately I did not keep my old switch so I could not do a side by side comparison.
After not 5 months I’m selling my Switch Lite to go BACK to the original Switch in grey, when I can find one.. for me I need that bigger screen and I miss the HD rumble and the odd time I dock it. When I had my OG Switch, before trading it in for the Lite, it put my PS4 Pro and Xbox One S gameplay under serious threat... it’s such a fantastic little machine.
The original vs the new oled is a hands down buy then, I'd say the extra battery life, oled screen, small boost in chip speed, better speakers, Lan cable support, I was hesitant at first but now I am all in!!
If you want to buy a new switch, please consider that this new model won't be hackable. If you want emulators, mods and make your switch a lot better, you won't be able to. The only upside of this revision is the better battery life.
@@seanmcbay True, i know they will be hackable at some point, also with a coldboot like other switchs... But having an unpatchable console is still pretty good x)
The battery life test may not be accurate. Unless the OG Switch is also new the overall battery capacity will reduce over the life of the device due to charge/discharge cycles. Although clearly power consumption is less and will have a longer battery life it just may not be as dramatic as shown in this comparison. Great video!
I understand where you're coming from, but all his times for the OG switch are in line with deep dives of Breath of the Wild that other people had done back at launch.
Can't wait to see your 'Mariko' version of the overclocking video you did a while back. I'm curious what the small gains in CPU/GPU clock speed could get if Nintendo ever unleashed them, similar to the speed ups they offer on BotW loading times and Labo VR. I know Nintendo wouldn't want to make that a thing because they don't want to split the player base but if they could find a conservative way to roll it out they might.
BTW, I traded in my v1 Switch @ GameStop for credit and then bought the v2 'Mariko' Switch for $100 and got refreshed drift-free JoyCons out of the deal so no complaints. But I've noticed ever since I got the improved battery life that I get tired of playing games on the couch or in bed or at my friend's house long before the batter gets close to being done. The new battery life is longer than my attention span!
Someone replied and said this new processor can't be hacked like the old one, which I guess would preclude the overclocking vid I'm asking for. I was afraid that might be the case but I wasn't sure and I don't think he mentioned it. Oh well, will have to wait for the hackers to do their thing or Nintendo to give MK11 an extra boosty boost-mode. No problem. I can wait after all.
In terms of the colour temperature of the screen, my Switch also had a warmer tint that I found really distracting but after 2-3 weeks I noticed that it normalized. I remember reading up at the time of many other people going through this. So it could just be that.
This is great and all but I don’t think too many hardcore fans are expecting major performance updates with this SKU of the Switch. I think a lot of us are waiting for the elusive Pro model of the Switch that Nintendo will pretty much have to make if they expect to get third party support with the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett being a thing in 2020. Anyway I think the main thing people can expect with this _Mariko_ version is more power efficiency and better thermals; hence longer gameplay time per charge. besides that I don’t think there will be any other major differences. To me this is a stop gap til we get a Pro version of the Switch.
The video already points out, thermals are largely the same as the fan just runs slower. This seems kinda silly when docked as surely the battery will handle more charges before degrading if its kept cooler.
This is the equivalent the other consoles slim variants. Only, cause the switch is already as compact as can be. You can't slim it down to reduce production costs without taking out some features, which is what the Switch Lite is.
@@scarffoxandfriends9401 Well Nintendo already made a _slim_ equivalent for the Switch through the Switch Lite. This 'updated' Switch is more like a model revision that we often get with PlayStation consoles. It's not a slim/super slim update. It's more of a model revision; revised components that are more power efficient. Smaller components that are lower cost for the company to manufacture and overall a more efficient console through thermal issues improved.
@@xxnike0629xx that's what i meant. =b the "new" switch and the switch lite both use the same new processor. I'm saying, that unlike with large home consoles, the switch doesn't have much room to decrease. The Lite is only able to do so as they removed multiple features. Such as the relatively Bulky HD rumble motors and the additional chip and board dedicated to processing electric flow between handheld and TV modes. "This is the cheap early 3rd party docks fried". But most importantly, with all other consoles they generally release more power efficient models after 2 1/2 to 3 years and sell them for $100 to $200 less. Yet people are acting like Nintendo is gimping them for selling a more power efficient console after 2 1/2 to 3 years years for the same price.
Maybe with this new revision, in the future nintendo could launch an overclock profile since the new model runs with lower temperature, so we should be able to see a bigger upgrade in performance.
Those are basically the same times that came out when people tested the OG switch at launch. They just wanted to have it side to side to give a better visual.
Most important thing to take from this video, NO NEED FOR EXISTING SWITCH OWNERS TO UPGRADE THEIR SWITCH! Battery Life can be extended through a multitude of battery packs available in the market. :) Very nice review & analysis tho. I always love the stuff Digital Foundry does.
@@nighttimestalker I don't think so. Haven't seen any issues with it still. Once its at 100%, it stops charging even if you have plugged in through the AC adapter or the Battery Pack. It just stays at a 100% until you either remove the AC adapter or the portable battery goes out of juice, after that the switch will use its own battery to draw out power.
I ended up using the local gamestop's incentive for trade in with a couple of old xbox games for an even swap. The battery life is a huge boost for me since I am mobile most of the time and it beats carrying around a larger power bank.
I got a switch on March 2017, launch model, open it until December 2018, everything works just fine and the screen is pretty decent all things considered, it's not the SAMOLED of my galaxy s10, but it is fine. No joycon drift or bluetooth disconnections. It even came with firmware version 1.0.0.
This is a massive improvement in the area that matters most in mobile hardware! Happy to have swapped out my OG Day 1 Switch for the new model. No regrets!👌🏾
On battery mode.. You can not get real compare since something battery lost a bit of power... It just the same machine.. Just buy new lite one.... It will last more and less weights....
The screen issue is a huge disappointment... It’s bad enough many switch games are optimized for low blue light (to reduce eye fatigue, at the cost of putting colours out of whack). Now there’s another layer of colour inconsistency atop of it to makes things more off then it normally is.
In the battery test, was the OG switch also newly bought? Battery wear and tear is a real thing. PS: Not sure if this was addressed in the video, but seems like it isn't.
This is the version that’ll make me finally pull the trigger, and pick up a Switch for home and quality mobile gaming. I nearly burst out in laughter when I misread the chip’s name as Marikon. 😉
Onaventea really? What are you playing? A console or even Pc needs exclusives. If you like your switch then its good for you but i cant see a generwl trend of it.
Neither are close to being thermal throttled though so it's all good. They don't have scaling clocks based on thermals. It has to hit a max temp before they downclock.
Thank you fr the analysis, the longer battery life is a very nice touch, I won't replace my old switch yet but this is good information, by the way, some people who opened up the console reported that the joystick on the joycons is different from the old model, dont know if better/worse but is not the same, maybe you can check it out if you can.
The reason why such different results are seen in that forest scene is because Breath of the Wild likely uses double-buffered Vsync - any dips that make rendering take even slightly longer than 33.3ms cause frame rate to dip to 20FPS. Even though the performance difference is slight, it may be enough to take render times below that, boosting frame rates to 30 in the process.
upgrading for me was a no brainer, since I play almost always in handheld. I also had a console from Italy, which apparently as a foreign console cannot be serviced by nintendo here in the states.
I think the screen thing is a person to person thing. Some switch models possibly have different calibrations and people also might see different colors. As you said, the switch on the right looks a little red. Other people could think that the switch on the left might look a little blue.
GreenSwede it wouldn’t of made a difference since the test was exclusively battery life. Also rotating right wouldn’t load any new assets, it would only show you the ones already loaded as you’re not moving at all.
@@blaize5436 Even though the assets are still loaded, that doesn't mean that the Switch is put at idle. Rendering the landscape for instance for every frame still takes computing power.

Hey guys as far as the screen goes apparently there are 3 different panel makers for the switch and it’s basically a dice roll if you get the good one.
Also less dust build up with less airflow
@I Should Change My Name Certainly will mah boi, that overclocking is what all true tinkerers strive for!
I'm pretty sure there will be a difference, but unfortunately the new switch is not hackable yet and looks like it won't be for a long time according to hackers themselves so it'll be a while till we know by how much the new switch will differ in OC.
Why did my switch bend in the dock if the temperatures are not too high?
@@jonathanlange1339 Bending is most probably caused by something else. 60C is not enough to bend plastic.
@@TexelGuy I always suspected it was how you hold it that bends it. I kinda feel when holding mine that I'm slightly stressing it at the sides, which over time could bend it.
When you think about how controllers have contours to shape to your fingers and the Switch barely anything, it kinds makes sense that you are holding it awkwardly.
Overclocking on the New Switch! I'm so curious!
It can't run homebrew, sadly.

Yo, v2 is the best for overclocking. Been playing totk in 60fps. Lol
This is fantastic for those who were still on the fence about getting a Switch.
the bowser / bowser and logan / mariko labels made me laugh lol
Since the switch has either a Logan or Mariko processor... does that mean the switch Pro will have a Daniel or Kumiko? .. haha
It would be great to see how Mariko runs fully overclocked.
This is going to take looooong
With how significantly more efficient this is, they need to add a boost mode.
If they are able to nearly cut the power consumption in half, there is a good bit of headroom. Give the user the option to sacrifice the extra battery for more performance
Might get trouble with the termals then.
Heat is the problem rather than anything else really.

Recently upgraded from my old switch to the V2 and I will say that it performs significantly better as well. I tested it with Mortal Kombat 11.
Playing with the characters Shang Tsung vs Noob Saibot on the Beast Pen level would wreck the frame rate on my previous switch.
So when I upgraded I tested this level out immediately with the same character picks, and I am confident in reporting that the frame rate is super smooth on the
V2 model. I really wish someone with the proper gear would test MK11 performance on both models. This game used to frustrate me due to it's performance and
I can now enjoy playing in that particular level. Anyone else experiencing performance gains like this?
I also want to add that I did this comparison in handheld mode. Unfortunately I did not keep my old switch so I could not do a side by side comparison.
What did you think of the new screen compared to your old? Is it too warm or too "green"? I am considering trading up (will be
I'm currently waiting on this model in the mail. So i keep watching reviews on it lol XD
When you overclock the new one to the max power limit, that will be good.
That may take some time.
They patch the hardware exploit. So until someone finds a way to hack the new Switch. We won't see nothing for some time.
4:03 I could have sworn it was the OG Switch that had more of a blue tint, whereas the revision is more warmer..
Thats what i had seen on other tests

3:00 - Or, you know, get the one with the red packinging.
The longer battery life is awesome!
That's exactly what the eye comfort mode on my Huawei. I've improved battery by at least 20%.
Tegra was such a power hog that a light 20-->16nm update made almost 50% in power reduction.
In terms of the colour temperature of the screen, my Switch also had a warmer tint that I found really distracting but after 2-3 weeks I noticed that it normalized. I remember reading up at the time of many other people going through this. So it could just be that.
That blurry clock on the windows desktop in the background really fscks with my ocd.
The way you spell fsck fucks with my ocd
Wow, guys, you never fail to impress me. Amazing video, you work really hard on these tests. Congrats!
How do you account for your OG-Switch's older, more degraded battery? Your watt-meter may tell a more accurate story than your Zelda test.
I'm assuming they used a pretty new Switch device
Those are basically the same times that came out when people tested the OG switch at launch. They just wanted to have it side to side to give a better visual.
Finally! some research in which you put some effort
Thanks soo much DF , been waiting for this video 👍🏻
Should be interesting when CFW can be installed and clocks can be pushed. Wonder if higher clock speeds can be achieved now.
Most important thing to take from this video, NO NEED FOR EXISTING SWITCH OWNERS TO UPGRADE THEIR SWITCH!
Battery Life can be extended through a multitude of battery packs available in the market. :)
Very nice review & analysis tho. I always love the stuff Digital Foundry does.
Playing with it charging is bad.
It will shorten the life of the battery and can lead to excessive heat.

Fantastic Review! An OC test would be a great addition. Thank You, DF!
Can't be done though unless it gets exploited and considering that's the main reason this revision exists, it could be a while.
The screen issue is a huge disappointment...
It’s bad enough many switch games are optimized for low blue light (to reduce eye fatigue, at the cost of putting colours out of whack).
Now there’s another layer of colour inconsistency atop of it to makes things more off then it normally is.
blue light strains your eyes, most of the new switches that are redish are actually more accurate color wise.
thank you for all your testing! love videos like these
In the battery test, was the OG switch also newly bought? Battery wear and tear is a real thing.

that way you had the switches positioned has me concerned lol. Vents look blocked and bottom switch may be venting hot air into the top one.
I can live with my Switch having weaker battery life, but hearing that performance is better makes me sad.
I'm surprised they haven't patched it to remove the double buffer or at least implement another type of vsync
0:07 - Isn't it the best Switch, though? It has better battery life than the Lite, and it does the same things as the original. Lol.
They patched out the exploit so you can't hack it.
upgrading for me was a no brainer, since I play almost always in handheld. I also had a console from Italy, which apparently as a foreign console cannot be serviced by nintendo here in the states.
You should be able to overclock this new chip and still get better better life then the OG model.
I think the screen thing is a person to person thing. Some switch models possibly have different calibrations and people also might see different colors. As you said, the switch on the right looks a little red. Other people could think that the switch on the left might look a little blue.
You do know there’s an option in settings that turns sleep mode off right? No need to tape the sticks lol.
I think taping the sticks was done more to put the Switch under load since it has to continuously render assets.
Rendering the landscape for instance for every frame still takes computing power.
the red tint color on the v2 really ease my eyes a bit. so thats a plus for me
Why do I suspect a downgrade in display quality?
Because its Nintendo and they ALWAYS do that to cut costs after launch?

I’m conflicted, you all are super knowledgeable but on the other hand you use the light theme for the home screen
For battery testing you really should set screen brightness across both devices to be at identical luminance, such as at 200 nits. Never eyeball this.

Hey guys as far as the screen goes apparently there are 3 different panel makers for the switch and it’s basically a dice roll if you get the good one. Some have what your screen had others have a yellow green tint to them and the good panels are as expected. I would watch Erica griffins video for the best source of info I could find about the panels. Oh also you can return it in exchange for a different unit if your not satisfied with your screen.
