That was my original intent, I buy, and refurb switches all the time and i occasionally end up with v1-v2/OLEDs that the screen is either broken or dead or can dock but can't output to the LCD and i wanted a way to save the hardware without just scrapping it.

You can also just use it in the normal dock without any modifications. This really doesn't do anything to "give a second life", the only thing it has over a docked switch is the cooling.

@@Logon013d printing is great and all but there is something about injection molded plastic that feels different. If you want 3d prints to feel as smooth, you have to spend a hour or two sanding it. Plus there plenty of people who don't have places that can 3d print for them.

    • @Logon01
      @Logon01 Рік тому +5

@@RobbWes 100% that injection mold is different. I do like the option myself when it's there. I also know that 3D printing isn't always an option, but if it were, you would have much more flexibility. And given that this project is a Do it yourself idea, spending time sanding and painting just adds to the value of it for some. It gives the ability to make something like this a one of a kind thing that is specifically yours.

I have a 3D printer (anker m5 and many others before it), +1 to everyone saying injection molded is just different, cause it certainly is! 3D printing is for prototyping and small projects where the look might not matter just the function. This is a device I’ll be interacting with, divots and rough lines even with my resin printer just aren’t gonna cut it. I remember the early gba shells and stuff that was 3D printed. Look at us today, funny playing is almost OEM level quality. Trying to replicate that OEM feel but having a cool switch console is 10/10 for me

I bet you could make a simple PCB that uses a small capacitor bank to trick the system into thinking a battery is connected without having to use an actual switch battery. The reason is that batteries degrade a lot faster when constantly plugged in, and if you're trying to make this a dedicated home console you don't want an extra component that can fail just from using the system.

it's been done with a buck converter and a 10k resistor. you steal the controller board out of the original battery, attach a buck converter set to 4.25v to where the battery terminals used to connect, and solder a resistor to a pad near the battery connector to trick the battery temp sensor. suddenly no battery needed.

For some extra cooling performance you can change the thermal paste between the heat shield and the SOC. I've modded and repaired a lot of Switches and that paste is often very dry. Then what happens is it crumbles and cracks during the removal and reinstallation of the heatsink resulting in hot spots / poor performance. It's always best to replace it if you have the console torn down to that extent.

I am definitely interested, though there are a few improvements I would bring to it ideally:
    - Have different shells to accomodate for the different Switch and Dock models on the market (OG, Mariko, OLED)
    - Have a "Pro" version where we can restore or even add USB ports (in case you have multiple wired controllers plugged in), but it would probably need an external power source for a hub (Maybe it could work using a power supply that is not Nintendo's?)
    - Have a hard power switch which can turn both the Switch motherboard and the external fan off in one fell swoop
    - Ideally have a substitute for the battery in case that swells up
But overall that sounds like a fun way to salvage a console with a dead screen!

I love the idea that we can salvage consoles to give them new life (though if just the screen went out, if it doesn’t make the console not-useable, then its less of an issue really). Also like how this conversion is reversible (in the event replacement screens become more available)
That said, I could suggest some improvements.
    1. Make the screw points thicker and use Metal threads instead. They make metal threads you can heat up and inset into 3d printed plastics. (this would just take making the screw points thicker to accommodate the metal thread inserts. He wouldn’t even need to do this himself. Just make the print able to accommodate it, while still using his current method for letting you screw into the plastic if you wanted.
    2. Not sure how the lid is held in place, but making the plastic tabs abit thicker to allow for inserting magnets or something like that would be neat.
    3. Instead of including a custom modded fan (which is what im guessing is happening); include a 4-pin PC fan to USB adapter would be much more universal and allow us to include any 80mm thin PC fan we wanted (perhaps he could include that as standard, and have an option to buy the fan from him for those that wanted an “all in one” package).

It is quite difficult because the fan is controlled by voltage. In a PC, it's usually 12 volts and 0.1-0.2 amperes, while in the switch, it's 5 volts and 0.4 amperes, so it's not possible without developing an additional converter. In this case, it would also be necessary to install additional copper radiators and set up the fan for blowing, as in this configuration, a vacuum is created inside and the small fan of the switch simply has nothing to breathe.

The fan in this kit is a 2-pin fan. Not a 3-wire PWM fan.
      The power ratings are different.
You would need one signal wire coming from the board that ran to the 3-wire PWM fan that you would have to buy and install to achieve this.

I understand that you didn't talk about jailbreaking the Switch to avoid getting too much unwanted attention on your channel, however since overclocking the OLED requires a modchip and this mod removes the screen it would have been nice to see how to use a CFW without a screen.
For this mod to be perfect we would need:
    - a custom bigger heatpipe and heatsink
    - a silent fan connected to the motherboard fan connector instead of a USB port
    - accessible micro SD and USB ports
    - joycon rails for pairing and charging

Love the mod, If you want some nicer heatsinks, it's 100% possible, I use switch heatsinks to make tons of custom ones, also you could remove the shim, it adds an extra layer for thermal transmission and isn't so great; as for overclocking could probably do more by cooling the ram and using a passive copper shield heatsink for the board underside with a large thermal pad

First the SD card slot lacks easy access. If you want to replace the card you need to disassemble a part of this kit. Second thing, is that you are also losing the joycon docking function. If you don't own a compatible wireless controler there's another expense (either a seperate joycon dock or a new controler). And finally the fact that this is dedicated only for the OLED Switch is the last con I see. Overall the idea is great but with place for further improvements.
