IT WORKED!, ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 4TH, WE PUT IN THE NEW FLYWHEEL AND THE CAR DROVE! ITS STILL WORKING!...i may put up a new video soon to show you guys the car driving
Very nice of you to explain this. I am a knucklehead with automotives, but this gives me talking points to take to my service guys (my exact same model is in the ship RIGHT NOW). Thanks!
Thanks for this video, upon further research it looks like this is a common problem. I found a mechanics special for really cheap with a bad transmission. I think I am going to take a gamble on this being the problem
I have the 04 civic hybrid and it has 160k miles. Could this be my problem? The car jerks when starting out, and jerks when I take my foot off the gas and then hit the accelerator at around 40mph plus. It's always clunking and jerking so I have to baby the gas pedal.
It’s very possible that the flywheel is the issue. Start by changing your transmission fluid first. If that doesn’t help then it’s probably the flywheel
@TheKongoman yes, the cvt control unit is also another possibilty for the cause of some of these cvt issue, good info for others as it may be an even cheaper solution
At the moment I don't have any photos of the defective flywheel...I may try to put up a better quality video of it later this month so you can see if yours is in a worse shape than ours...if your doing this job on your own you will see the flywheel before you even have to open up the transmission, so either way you'll know if that is the problem...if your flywheel happens to be fine then something inside of your transmission is the problem, for us our flywheel fixed the problem on our 2nd trans
my 2003 civic hybrid will shift into every gear however reverse, drive, low and 2nd gear all are like the car is in neutral. In park it will not roll but when in any other gear my car runs but will not move. My question is...ultimately, is the problem more likely the flywheel and input shaft , cvt control unit or the transmission?
no, we didn't hear a noise on acceleration from 0-15mph...our transmission died on the hwy at about 60mph...a loud grinding noise might be a sign that you may need new transmission fluid, or that your flywheels teeth MIGHT be wearing away...just change your fluid to be safe
I came to a stop at a stoplight today. The light turned green and when I gave it gas it hesitated and wouldn't go. The RPM'S rose and fell slightly for about 5 seconds and then settled down at an idle RPM. The engine was running and I could rev it up but the car simply wouldn't go. I put it in park and back in to drive and nothing. I shut the car off and restarted it and still nothing. I had to call a tow truck while sitting in traffic with my hazards flashing to have it towed home. What would you recommend I do to start troubleshooting it?
Dan Ware this is very similar to how our civic hybrid's cvt first failed in 2009...I'd suggest to first change the cvt fluid, then check for unusual codes using and obd code reader...if that doesn't help you troubleshoot the issue the cvt ECU is what I'd change before going straight for the flywheel which may be the issue in the end
I'm a DIYer but I never done anything beyond taking out an engine or transmission. Is there a way to find out if it's the Flywheel without taking out the engine and transmission?
Hello, I have a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid, and it wont shift into gear. Do you think it could be a Flywheel problem or a Transmission problem? The car would rev but never kick into gear matter which gear I put it into.
Your cvt control unit fixed cvt slippage or just allowed the car to move in gear? The flywheel fixed our issue last year but currently our cvt slips when it warms up but drives when it's cold
Brother i driver a 2001 civic hx also with a cvt, i have no problems on high way it runs fine ,my problems is when i stop, the car shakes pretty bad, there is no check engine ligh on, some people has tell me that i probably i have a problem with the electronic clutch..which is inside of the tranny....
+44,537,955 views I used honda cvt. I'm a diy mechanic so I recently started messing with hybrids. really nice cars. if you don't understand that they r different from other car they can be an head ache$$
I already tried everything, flush the fluid and did not work, I think I swap that tranny for a manual one..I'd fix it but no body knows how to work with cvt ...
really sounds like it can be the flywheel...if ur a do it yourselfer, you'll see if it's the flywheel or not before you ever have to go into the transmission
Hey. I have an 04 Civic Hybrid. When I initially accelerate (say from parked or leaving a red light) I get this shudder or heavy vibration every time. Got the belt mechanism replaced after it shattered (3000 dollars later) and the sound went away. But now its back AGAIN. Could this be the flywheel???? I've been trying to figure this out for 2 years.
It very well may be, but before you check that I'd try checking or replacing the transmission ECU as it is cheaper and easier to change than a flywheel
I don't know why it would be moving in park but the fact that its moving shows that there isn't enough torque when the car is on the ground which could be because of the flywheel or maybe worn clutches...I'd also check the axles connection with the transmission and the tires because it may be loose
Ogla Garcia had the same issue I’m starting to think it’s the transmission because I changed the flywheel and now it don’t grind anymore but now it doesn’t dirve so imma check the transmission fluid and if thag isn’t work it probably has a bad transmission because it’s has almost 300000 miles
Hey my 2004 honda civic hybrid shifts into every gear smoothly but won't roll on park and won't work on any other gear and tryed moving the shifter up and down and now it feels loose and is now stuck on neutral but the shifter will move forward and backward

This has been the most important video, that I have ever watched. Mine problem was the flywheel as well.
So glad that I could help!

No problem! good luck getting your hybrid fixed.

ChrisBow Piloto Good luck! Comment or message me with any questions that may arise!
Thanks, you helped me to solve my problem I had, my flywheel went really bad, all dents gone. thanks again!
Awesome! I'm glad I could help
Grease on splines wouldnt cause wear. I work on machines that use special synthetic spline grease to extend life. Heat and use just wear teeth out.
@Michael check the cvt control unit first, then check the flywheel if that doesn't work

K. Thanks. I did change the fluid several times and it didn't help.

video is good for future reference. i'll still keep this guy's flywheel info in mind because i got over 170,000 miles. but still not a problem yet.

Hey did you experience the loud grinding noise on acceleration from 0-15mph before your transmission failed as well?
I have a 2004 and been trying to figure out this same grinding noise that seems to be progressing. did you ever figure it out?

hey I was wondering where did you purchase a flywheel
jimmy black Hondaautomotiveparts.com (I think it’s the same site as majestic Honda’s)
Also, the site was in the video description

IT'SME the transmission started slipping then ultimately failed
a new flywheel from hondaautomotiveparts . com costs $356.94...it was in the description btw lol

Where did you buy the flywheel? What website? Store? Etc. Please

elvin valladares try flushing your transmission and see if it improves
Yes I have a 2003 hch and flushing worked
+jaye smith That's great! Did you use the Honda CVT fluid, Honda's ATF DW-1 fluid or some other?

yea, only $356.94 to repair...hopefully that's all we need cause this car is costing us a lot to repair

I second this question: have something similar
Change the CVT fluid. The shudder vibration will be significantly reduced. However, it won’t go away entirely. At least in my experience it hasn’t.
Could the flywheel be the problem.?
It very well may be, but before you check that I'd try checking or replacing the transmission ECU as it is cheaper and easier to change than a flywheel
But I lifted the car up with a jack and the front wheels moved when I started rotated them even tho the transmission is on park(and its fwd)

not bad.
Haha Honda calls it the fly wheel
poor guy probably got sold a transmission with 200k miles and was told it only had 7k miles.
Nancy Gordon No, that did not happen. Our new flywheel wore out on the original transmission

Hey did you experience the loud grinding noise on acceleration from 0-15mph before your transmission failed as well?
I have that noise right now, did anything end up happening
