2017 Hyundai Elantra - Review and Road Test
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 чер 2016
- As with the rest of Hyundai's lineup, the Elantra boasts stylish looks, premium amenities and a class-leading warranty that includes 10 years/100,000 miles for the powertrain. But is that enough to take down heavyweights like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla?

The 2017 design always catches me off guard. I don't realize how handsome it is until night when its body lines are shown. The front end is a masterpiece and has a very agressive stance. Good proportions for a compact sedan.
I’m assuming you personally own one. How has it been holding on?
I just got a 2017 SE, for less than $11,000. Reliability and value were my main reasons for choosing Hyundai. Very impressed with it, very nice to drive and averaging 40 miles per gallon.
Lan Anh Hoang Thi the new 2019 elantras are like 12k when their MSRP is 17-20K not sure why though
@Derrick2250 I got a used 2017 and I want to give it back not even fully loaded. I must have been high on crack when I purchased it.
@Derrick2250 well to make a long story short I traded in my 02 Chevy cause it was no longer worth fixing and I went to this used dealer and I got a basic edition without touch screen. Its not fully loaded. I was rushing cause I no longer wanted to insure my Chevy.
It's 2016, having A/C isn't something notable to mention as a standard feature
The dodge dart doesn't come with it standard if I'm not mistaken.
+jigglemankiller I used to have one the AC comes standard
+BBB BBB (codemaSTER) I know for a fact the 2013 dodge dart had a base model with out A/C.
+jigglemankiller I used to have a 2015 Dodge Dart se
+BBB BBB (codemaSTER) KBB has a video with the 2013 dart and a.c. is a added package.
I'm posting as someone who bought the Elantra Ultimate over any of the competitors. Please keep in mind I test drove the following competitors: Civic, Cruze, 3, Impreza, Corolla. I generally test drove the top trim models, since I was leaning towards a reliable daily driver.
Elantra pros:
-Good option packages for a fair price (wasn't the cheapest or most expensive)
-There's a few options not available on competitor cars (memory seats? Did not expect that)
-Looks good in a conservative way (I'm not trying to turn heads in a compact car)
-Roomy...incredibly roomy.
-Decent gas mileage
-Soft, mostly compliant ride
-Great interior design, simple and not overdone (I love the standard placement of the Navi screen, doesn't look like some tacked on iPad).
-Handsome wheels (Civic touring wheels made me sadface)
-Big discounts from dealers
Elantra cons:
-Decent power under 4k, struggles pretty mightly above that - I can forgive, this is a daily driver
-Hard plastic interior...too much of it
-Jekyll and Hyde ride quality - Very smooth on decent roads, and terribly harsh with big bumps
Evaluation of other cars
Civic - Great car, better driving dynamics than my Elantra. However, this isn't my weekend car. This car is for driving to work 3-5 times a week for 30 minutes a day. Loved the LED lights, but could do without them. I actually like the design, but I feel it draws a bit too much attention, it's polarizing for sure. Interior - what a mess. I like simple and easy interiors in cheap compacts. I wish Honda would stop overdesigning these interiors. Probably my biggest reason I did not get the Civic. Oh, and dealers are not wiling to discount very much on Civic Tourings compared to Elantra Limiteds...period. I got about 4k off my Elantra, so that's what essentially sealed the deal. But I understand that Honda doesn't need help selling Civics, so I'm okay with that. Still a great car though, would have picked the Civic with the same discount.
Mazda 3 - I loved this car...well at least the interior and driving dynamics. I used to have a Mazdaspeed 3, so it brought back some memories. Interior is nice, but I still hate that ugly tacked on Navi screen thing. Better materials than both Civic and Elantra inside. Outside, that's where I think Mazda missed the mark. These cars are a bit too ugly for me, and I loved my 5 door MS3. Drives like a sports car though. But again, not what I was looking for.
Cruze - Good, but I just hate GM's interior designs. I mean, the Civic's was just overdone, but the Cruze interior just oozed cheap GM interior feelings, man. I also did not like the exterior design. The previous generations of Cruzes were better, now they just look like Volt copies.
Bro!!! I just bought a Chevy Cruze 2017 Diesel. The interior is far nicer and better than the stupid TDI I had before that. I had the MK6 TDI and talk about cheap interior. And it wasn't even the base model. It was a highline with leather interior and the fucking car felt like a cheap ass Corolla. Got into an accident, so I went to check out that new Cruze Diesel and it's much better than what VW did. Had Many TDI Jetta before and they had very nice and comfortable interiors. The only good thing about German cars is how they handle on highways. Obviously they are designed for Autobahn use, but other than that. Very disappointing.
I was with you until you said the Mazda 3 was ugly
This is the review that made me decide to buy my Elantra. Thank you Kbb.
just got one this week, and it's a smooth ride. I was able to get a 6 speed manual, and I love it so far.
I just bought this car today. I love it.
@Bishop Wesson it’s a virus don’t go
What about now?
How’s it going now? Pros and cons from your experience with it
My 17 Elantra I bought new just turned 100.000 miles . 0 repairs 0 issues. What a great car.
How's the get up and go in it? I want one but I dont want it to take 10 years to get up to 60
I just bought a 2017 Elantra limited trim for $14605 after dealer discount and all rebates. MSRP $23755 - dealer discount $3500 - Hyundai rebate 4250 - Uber incentive $1000 - college grat $400 = 14605. Almost 40% MSRP. What a deal !
Tho Le how do you like it
Iris Kearney I really like it. Very comfortable and relaxing. Best bang for the buck. I test drove all other cars in the segment, and to be honest I love the Mazda 3 but It can be 6 to 8k more expensive than the Elantra with the same equipment level. If you have 25k to spend for a fully loaded civic or mazda3, why not consider a used 3 series or Lexus IS.
That's a really good deal you got for that model! hey what state did you get it from. I am looking forward to buying one probably soon hopefully
I've had my Elantra Sedan for four months absolutely love it. $3,000 Hyundai Rebates and my trade in for my 2004 Chevy Impala, I got another $1500 off. I was amazed that I got $1500 for that car because it had over 200,000 miles.
The exterior design is awesome !
Man this made me smile go KBB!
Chris Sorreda 자랑스러운 우리 현데이!!
I just turned 58.000 miles on my 17 Elantra. It has been flawless, no issues at all. Still on the original tires, and they still aren't quite ready to need replacement. Very pleased with this car.
My friend's mom recently bought a silver Elantra and I love it! It's so beautiful and comfortable
I got my Elantra 2017 two years ago and love it.Up where I live in Canada our winters are very cold but no problem with the battery. The heated steering wheel and heated seats are a big plus.Compared to my 2013 Elantra the 2017 is a much stiffer ride due to more steel in construction.I think that Hyundai gives you much more car for your money.
I have a 2017 Elantra SE, I've owned it about 6 months. It's a very good car. Excellent MPG's, very roomy inside for a big guy like me, and it's still very fun to drive. I would recommend anybody shopping for a car like this really needs to drive one, it has many advantages over a Nissan or Mazda, and is less expensive. And it still has all the perks of a reliable Honda or Toyota.
Heated rear seats? Thats not common in compact cars.
All those options are either on the highest trim level or at additional cost. 75% of purchases will be for the base SE so I don't know why they don't review that model.
His said it could technically be called a mid sized car
My experience with an Elantra of this generation spans all of two weeks, not even consecutively. Before you think I hated the car, nope...two separate rentals. One was with the family, the other was a solo trip, but in both cases the Elantra proved to be a decent little car. It was roomy enough for two adults, two teenage kids, a small dog and a bunch of our stuff, but I don't think the kids would have wanted to do more than a couple of hours at a time in the backseat. When my mom came onboard for a few little errands or to go out to a local restaurant, the Elantra was definitely feeling a bit tight with five of us!
Still, I liked the car. Yes, yes the steering was numb, but it was also easy to drive and the car exuded confidence on some twisty two lane roads I drove on in North Carolina. Power was acceptable; people don't buy Elantras (or Civics or Corollas in this price range) for raw speed, but I found it more than acceptable. (Twenty years ago, this type of performance in smallish car would have been a revelation!)
Overall, I liked the comfort, ride and features, as well as the pleasing dashboard layout. I could get used to the hard plastics mentioned because besides the doors, they were mostly in places where I would seldom touch, and again this would generally be a common theme in any sub-$20k vehicle. While both my Elantras were mid-level rentals, they were more than good enough for what I needed, and not just as a rental. By no means was the car exciting but it was hardly dull or laborious to live with. There was enough here that I would not hesitate to put these cars on my shopping list if I was looking for a smaller, inexpensive family car.
And to think, as I write this in March 2020, there is already a brand new Elantra on deck, which will no doubt address some of the shortcomings discussed about on the previous generation.
I bought my 17 Elantra in june of 16. Fully loaded SE. Its been flawless. 73.000. Miles now. 0 repairs, 0 issues. Southern California car, AC handles 115 to 120 degrees just fine too.
Love the front and rear lights
I have a 2016 Elantra Limited, and while I love the way it looks inside and out I'm a little jealous of some of the features they added for 2017.
One of the many thing I like about my Elantra is when it rain, the sterring weel is not affected when i drive on a puddle of water, it's the car i find to be the more stable on the road of all the one i had purchased before.
This is just a fun review video. Kudos to the video guys. Great road b-roll, too.
Great and hilarious video & the car buds moment is my favorite part this video! Lol 😂👌🏽
I bought one of these used for 2 years and sold it to get a CX-5. Love my Mazda but this car was absolutely solid. Outside of a door handle recall that was fixed under warranty, a squeaky motor mount that was fixed with a $5 bottle of silicone spray, and a new battery. I put 35k miles on it with no issues outside of the minor things I had to do. The tech was great and definitely something that took some getting used to in the Mazda with its simplicity.
I had the ultimate package which added the adaptive cruise and automatic lane centering and it pretty much drove itself. Was awesome on long trips when I could take my hands off the wheel and open a bottle or clean my glasses and the car would drive and steer itself.
I think it looks way better than the current generation.
Also, I got a 100K bumper to bumper warranty and they carried over the 100K power train warranty. So, all in all, I am very happy
I'm trying to buy Is a used car 2013 Hyundai Elantra only a 100 k miles What are your recommendations thanks 😊
Here is where the Elantra is better: NO CVT for an automatic. I hate those CVTs, they have almost zero acceleration from a stop. No direct injection (on the base model) = no carbon deposit problems on your intake valves 3 years later. Instead they use the old port injection that scrubs the intake valves clean. Some cars like the Lexus IS250 are having to have their engines replaced because of that problem = $8,000 cost ! (avoid the eco Elantra model, it has direct injection).
I've had my Elantra for almost two years and the Tucson for almost almost six months. I'm loving them both
this car is definitely comfortable. my step father traded his 2015 wrx for this (i know i was scratching my head too) and let me drive it. it is incredibly comfortable. but. i personally drive a 2004 hyundai elantra gt. the steering on that is the most communicative steering i have ever felt. i feel every single bump , loss of traction, and change in road surface clear as day. i got in this and while it was smooth as hell. there was absolutely zero feedback.which meant i had to focus more on steering than i usually do. good car.just dont expect anything sporty.
I just got mine a couple of days ago. Elantra 4 door with the Popular equipment package . I love it. It's not "typical"
compact in size. It's almost the size of the current Honda Civic. Great car. i recommend it.
@Jaboo82681 Which Elantra model did you get?
Charles allen jr lol it is definitely "typical" too typical actually
achillesxep 22 The popular equipment package (Value Edition) it's a slight step up from the base model. Mine has 16 inch wheels and 7 inch monitor
Is the car fast enough for the highway?
I've been driving a 2017 se since 2019. Best vehicle I've ever owned. Has never broke down
Thanks for the birthday present!
Just bought the 2018 Elantra SE Manual Transmission this past week. Mine came from the South Korea Plant as apposed to the Alabama Plant...It's a base model. 2.0 MPI fuel injected engine. I really like this car. Rides great, driver seat is comfortable and snug. A/C is cold and the engine is real quite. I'm getting 41 mpg right now. I can't believe I won't need to fill this thing until after 450-480 miles? Don't know yet. still on first full tank of gas. If you "baby" the gas pedal, you get great mileage. It's just a nice car with a nice warranty. The rebate was fantastic....if still on, $2500.
I just bought this car in Saturday, and it works pretty good.
That montage was 🔥🔥🔥
Just got my 2017 Elantra! It's great on gas!👍
OMG IT HAZ AIR CONDITIONING
what? you must be joking AC? that's freaking amazing
on the dodge dart its optional
On a lot of base model cars it's optional.
The Swamp that’s why i’ll never buy a base model car.
Luke Hoisington Ikr! 😮😮😲😲
Micah...are you going to do a separate review on the Eco model with the 1.4 Turbo?
Kudos Hyundai for staying away from CVTs
I second that
+guru gara it means congratulations or well done, or good job, or props to
+guru gara American slang for commending someone for doing something positive
+Elliot Sanchez that's a great answer, well said.
AltaSonata it makes me want to trade in my 2014 Honda Civic. I hate the CVT in it.
Thank you for the great review. This week we test drove 2019 Hyundai Elantra. FInd out if the CVT is good enough for you! ua-cam.com/video/YFUmGgOWA34/v-deo.html
Im planning to buy 2017 elantra and gonna live in nova scotia canada... Will this be good with winter tires during winter?
Can you please post a video of the all-new 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
I had a 2013 Elantra and i loved it so much some hit us from the back and it was totaled. Were looking to buy a 2017
that car buds moment :D
I've got a 2017 and am very happy with it
I got the 2017 Hyundai Elantra value Edition brand new the rebates for so deep I end up getting everything for $16,000 finance charges included I love this car it's one trim down from the limited but I still get a sunroof and a power seat even though the upholstery is cloth it makes me feel rich even though I'm dirt poor
katieducky23 lmao if cloth seats make you feel rich then you are definitely going something wrong in your life
alextb10 While I understand your brain is under developed from all the drugs the rich feeling I was reffering to was the power seat and other technology that came with the car. Not the material of the seats. The reason I brought up the material of the seats is because typically power seats are reserved for leather. Please use your brain (if applicable ) before making stupid comments.
@@katieducky23 lmfao
I've watched this particular several times. Love everything about the video.
Can you do a review of the Sport edition of Elantra? I've seen alot of reviews but didn't get satisfied. Thank you KBB!
That montage was awesome! :D
Nour Nachabe the fat lady topped it all off

I have mine almost a year absolutely love it bought it December of 2023 with 14k miles and I put 10k on it so it’s at 24 now the has millage is insane 45 easy on highway and about 30-35 city
Just got a 2018 absolutely love it it’s only has 14k miles which is good for a 5 year old car
KBB reviews are somehow crazy enjoyable
Will you guys do a test of the Eco trim with the turbo and DCT?
now, this is what I call a review!
The iconic Corolla and Civic were the models from the 80's and the 90's my friend. Only the 2018 models are finally getting better.
That was one sweet montage
I got mine 2017 Limited almost 2 years ago. I do almost 41 mpg in the summer and 37 mpg in the winter. I don’t drive much in the city but I live in a hilly rural area so I coast a lot. The only issue is that the screen says I’m making 3 extra miles per gallon than reality and last check up costed me $700 😣
Off all the Compacts right now, The Elantra and Jetta are the two most serious challengers to the Mazda 3 and Civic. The Elantra's cousin Kia Forte is right there with them. The Mazda3 and VW Jetta are due for a refresh or a redesign soon. Let's see what happens after that. The new 2017 Subaru Impreza will surprise a lot of people.
Awesome review
great review!
can i just ask something? how can a 2017 car be out at 2016?
I get around 41 mpg on the highway in mine.
I love this reviewer 😂😂
Can anyone tell me which is better(sporty) there are 2 types of Elantra engine here in Croatia 1.6 MPi (Petrol) 128BHP and
1.6 CRDi U2 Engine (Diesel) 136 BHP which of those two would accelerate and be faster ive read that diesel engines accelerate slower but can't decide yet
I’ve rented a 17 Elantra and it was ok for what it was but when I had to replace my old car this year I decided to get a 16 Elantra and I got a way better deal and plus mines had low miles for the year
Is it fuel efficient? Planning to buy 2nd hand 2017 model 2018 acquired will it be worth it? Pls help me decide guys ❤
My wife is going to buy one, cool car, the dude doing the review even cooler :-)
I appreciate that montage.
Hello all commentors! Im thinking of buying a used 2017 Elantra and i havent seen many recent reviews... For the people who've had this car for a while, do you still recommend purchasing one? I would use it as daily driver to work and back 5-6 days a week, Thanks!!
The best reviewer!!!
I'm about to purchase a used 2017 elantra. Was surprised how good it looked.
I hate the small windows. I find it particularly hard to get into the rear seats in this Elantra. My 2013 Mazda6 has awesome rear room and large windows even with a coupe like roof slope. I know these are 2 different car categories, but small window design is a bane of modern designs which many manufacturers now follow.
Does the engine have a chain or a belt?
lolllll a fun but tothepoint reveiw!! Nice job KBB
Did it just go airborne at 4:32?
I want this car to be a New Year's Day gift! No more calling Uber, or Lyft!
I was considering this car but since the insurance is more expensive than my VW Golf the total monthly cost would have cost me more.
Is the rear seat can recline?
I'm a college student so I was if this would be a good car for me?
Hey, KBB, please add that type of montage to every video
@1:39 lol, The pedestrian look worried you were going to hit her. Best way to demonstrate the emergency braking by almost hitting a real random pedestrian.
This is the first car I've ever purchased for myself. Have had it for a few years now, I like almost everything about it except for the front pillars - they really negatively affect the visibility for me, compared to other cars I've driven. You get used to it eventually but it's not ideal.
4:30 the elantra enjoyed that air time way too much
I’m a Subaru loyalist, but I love the looks of this car
I was gonna get a civic but I gotta check this car out too. That warranty is hard to pass up
After taking the Elantra for a test the other day, it really does feel good, especially with the new stiffer body. The engine is enough, a little slower than others, but it's really smooth and has a good gearbox.
Crunchbite I ended up getting the sonata lol I was going to get a compact but they offered me a full size car for the same price as the civic was going for they sold the sonata to me for 19810 and free oil changes as long as I have the car😀😀😀
It's going to be really hard to beat the Elantra at $2000 off and 0% APR right now where I am.
Crunchbite that's a good deal. The mark on the sonata I bought was 23205 and I got it for 19810 so they took off almost 3500 and it came with the tech package that has xm radio and apple car play and stuff. The civic was going for 19404 and they were not budgeing so for 400 dollars more I got a full size car and free oil changes is a big discount in the long run.
Kyle Rider I'm looking to buy my first car should I get the civic or the Electra?? Which would you recommend?
I have a 2016. And I love it
I would hope the entry model comes with A/C....
🙄
Gonna need a montage!
Awesome review, #carbuds 😂☠️ defs looking into getting one 🎉
Great video, But I think i'll stick with my 07 for now
i had one great car good on gas an never not started
I'm thinking on getting these next year.
Filipino Sneakers Me too, seems to be a great value.
😂😂😂. Awesome video, this guy is hilarious
I'm really confused why Hyundai went in the wrong direction with the Elantras interior. Last generations was beautiful.
the styling for the entire line up is a little more conservative this go around due to lack luster sales in Korea
Jake Martin I liked my 2013 Elantra limited better than the new 2017 limited.
The fact that in 2016 you guys threw in "AC" as a feature lmao !
Still sounds like an angry cat when you floor it. :) And still has the same key my dad's 2001 had.
Limited?
ok can we please get over this concept of "power windows" being a feature? if it DOESNT have it then point it out (which yall already do) but power windows and AC is nothing new in 2016
The problem is that AC and power features are not included on baseline models a lot of the time, so they are technically options still.
Montage music plz?
I just drove a rental one of these, and the steering was my #1 complaint. We mostly had highway driving (where it didn't matter and the Elantra just sipped fuel), but as soon as I started navigating a parking lot, it felt like a video game. I'd keep it in sport just to get some feedback. But otherwise...yeah, there's a lot to like on the Elantra. The 6-speed auto does have a manual mode (with up and down in the right directions!), the telescoping wheel is really nice to get comfortable, and now that I'm comparing prices, it seems like a solid overall value. Like KBB said, you have a lot of options in this space, but the Elantra is worth considering.
I testdrived the car it's a good car but ground clearance is not so good for indian roads
nice review1
Love it
