Ah yes the R4. To this day I never owned a single retail game for my ds, but the R4's were nice. (Also you could actually connect to nintendo's official wi-fi servers on this thing, kinda insane lol.)
Here on Latin America there's a 0.01 chances of 1,000,000 that you don't own an R4 card (even the ones that never got a ds and got a 3ds like me) i mean here on latin America everyone has bought at least 1 pirate stuff, a pirate movie, a pirate toy, or one PS2 that you bought modded (yes PS2 here every single one of those mostly was bought with a mod chip mostly matrix or toxic)
In some ways, the Nintendo DS is like the "Good Future" version of the Sega Dreamcast's story. In both cases, their creators were basically spurred into action by sheer terror of Sony's reputation. Sega hoped to reclaim a foothold in the console realm before the PS2 arrived; Nintendo feared the GBA wouldn't cut it when Sony entered the handheld arena that they had basically had to themselves for a while. They each arrived after their predecessors had been on the market for a surprisingly short amount of time (with how prominent the Game Boy Advance was, it's so weird to think it spent a little more than 3 years as Nintendo's top dog of the handheld world). While the Dreamcast was a tragedy despite genuinely impressive effort, with the DS, Nintendo took their already-thriving handheld presence to another level, in spite of tough competition from the PSP.
I got a DSi XL for Christmas when I was 9, and man I'm so glad I was able to experience such a console. It was home to my first ever Pokémon game (Pokémon Diamond), MarioKart DS, New Super Mario Bros., and a horde of Nintendogs games. I'd pay anything to relive the joy upon playing those games for the first time.
Funny you mentioned that the Phantom Hourglass was not a great game to start the Zelda series, it was the first Zelda game I ever played and got hooked instantaneously to it, taking to look for more games of the franchise, now I'm a big fan because of it
And sure I know the touch screen controls put a lot of hardcore zelda fans off but I actually kinda like it I mean sure it would've been nice to have an option to use the Dpad for basic movement but I don't mind it also I really like how you can draw maps in the game I wish more zelda games do that aside from Spirit Tracks
The nostalgia i got from this video was insane. Some of my favourite childhood memories were spending hours wondering around Pokemon Platinum and playing nintendogs with my 3 siblings and the first time I got my DS and Pokemon Black! The DS, DSi and 3DS have yet to be beat for me!
My first console was a 2ds. I remember bringing it to preschool (yes I’m that young) and I was the coolest kid there. The only game I had was Lego Batman because nobody ever got me any games. My step mom threw it away about 5 years ago and I’m still mad. I’m so sad I must put on that much nostalgia 😭
I remember sobbing when my dad told me that we were headed to the game store to get me a DS lite. Every single child in my school had one. If you didn't have a DS you missed out on most socializing. There was a solid 18 months where I spent every waking second of free time I had as a 9 year old playing/using my DS.
Love your covering the original model like it was some kind of ancient relic, but for me, it was always people's little brothers who got Lites. Me and all my friends had the fat version.
A lot Ds games just give me so much nostalgia. While for myself, we had a DS lite which my family shared, but later I got a 2ds for myself, most games I played on it were original DS games. New Super Mario Bros was one of the first ever video game I played and the first one I loved. Me and my sisters have probably spent way to much time with that games multi-player. I still remember my first time playing lego star wars the complete saga ds for the first time, completely freaking out because as a child I didn't understand how to use my lightsaber. One day my mom brought home a copy of the first professor layton game, which didn't have a case because she apparently got it from a colleague at work, and me asking her for help with almost every puzzle, being interested in the games story. And over time, I got all the rest of the games. Even though I'm younger than most people who grew up with a DS, I'm also really nostalgic for games on the DS.
Great video! One thing that wasn’t stated in this video was that by dropping the “gameboy” name Nintendo was able to advertise to girls. Nintendog and Pokemon were massive hits and I remember the girls in my elementary school class playing them a ton. It’s interesting because their gaming typically didn’t go beyond the Ds and I partly think thats because other consoles didn’t market games towards girls. Also you didn’t mention the best DS game of all time The World Ends With You!!!
I got a $20 garage sale DS lite when I was younger. It came with a few third party games and a Japanese Pokémon game, either platinum, diamond, or pearl. One day the hinge broke and then the cartridge slot stopped reading games, it was probably just dirty. I didn't appreciate the console much because I never played multiplayer with anyone, I couldn't figure out how to get the WiFi working on it, I never got any games other than what it came with, and I thought the "lite" naming meant it was a trial version or a downgraded version because I played a lot of free "lite" games on my mum's laptop. I tore it apart and it became landfill. I deeply regret that now. Half a year ago I got a $50 op shop DSi XL and now I'm playing all the games I wished I could play back then. It sucks I missed out on the peak of the console's popularity.
Can confirm the OG DS comment that no one around had it. I bought it the week of release but legit didn't see many OG DS' around until the Lite released and the floodgates opened! Great video!
I really enjoy your videos. You're putting out a lot of great content pretty quickly. To be candid, it's helpful to understand how a younger generation sees and experiences games (I say this, because the experience you're having with the DS is similar to mine on GameBoy Color and GBA). I think your articulate yourself well and have an awareness that many other creators lack. You've got that comedic timing down, too. Keep it up!
My first DS was a DSI. My mom bought it for me along with an R4 card that came with about 30 games built in. To this day, that console and the 3DS I got later are still some of my favourite consoles
And yes, flashcards were a complete gamechanger. I got myself an M3DSreal when I was about 12 and it changed EVERYTHING. It introduced me to so many games and franchises that I still love to this day
@film fan we didnt have games over here, and when we did they would cost half the cost of the ds, which was inflated to be around 500usd here around 2008-2010
loved my dsi with my whole heart, and i’m so glad you mentioned nintendogs bc that was one of my favs along with pokémon black/white, cooking mama, and other various puzzle games. i was obsessed with the princess isabella: a witch’s curse series
Mario kart ds might still be my favorite entry. I had Wii at the time too but very rarely had the tv to myself so I just played those tracks endlessly. I picked it up after 15 years and it’s still muscle memory
Growing up in the 2000s I remember owning a Nintendo DS and new Super Mario Bros DS, Super Mario 64. DS and Mario kart DS were the gods of my childhood along with Spider-Man 3, Transformers and other movie tie-in games!
Nintendo DS had some good games. Aliens Infestation and Resident Evil DS in particular were fun. Wish the other PS1 RE games got DS ports too, especially RE3 Nemesis. Maybe Dino Crisis 1&2 as well.
Christmas 2014. The DS Lite was the first console to my self. I played on my sister’s GBA SP’s and DSi’s, but this was all mine. I was confused at first, since it looked a bit different (I was 7), but I loved it could play GBA games. I need to replace my screen after my nephew dropped it.
The DS was my second handheld console, and it's safe to say I still have fun playing it today - even if it isn't popular now. This might fascinate you: someone recreated New Super Mario Bros' versus mode, and made it playable online, with about up to 8 players. It's an insane experience, I highly suggest you check it out. Other than that, thanks for taking us through a nostalgic trip on one of Nintendo's greatest selling handhelds.
2:50 actually I believe that’s a misconception, the item stat actually determines how many mushrooms you get at the start of a time trial (which is why you only see the stat be at three different levels, for 1-3 mushrooms respectively)
it is a very common misconception, the only things that affect what items you can get are your position and how many players are in the room. (and that one special item box in DK Pass where it thinks you are always in last place i guess)
Always been a DS fanboy, hell even a 3DS fanboy. I really miss how I took these things to class to trade some pokemon only to hear that fine trading tune, or be absolutely excited to see a full mario kart lobby. Then in high school playing 4 player luigi's mansion 2 was a great blast too. Knowing those times will most likely not happen again around here (unless there's people around me with just as much nostalgia who still owns those things) is kinda sad. But after all, don't cry because it's gone, smile because it happened. Or..However that quote went. I don't remember it as fondly.
Mario Kart DS was fire to me! I remember having that game when I got my ds in Christmas 2005. Crazy how a lot of people didn't see the og model in person I already knew people with the og ds model in 2005.
I remember as a kid everyone had either a r4 card or tt card for their DS consoles and the cards were everywhere and had the nickname "pirate cards" lol
i had a R4 card when i got my first ds and until know i never know really much about it one day i lost it but then i got a replacement R4 that even had more games but most were not big known games but were fun to play until it started to freeze my switch
DS definitely was my childhood. My family wasn't exactly poor growing up but I never really got gifts much so no xbox 360 or anything unfortunately. I was fortunate enough to get a DS as a birthday present from my grandfather and my mother would occasionally buy me games for it. It definitely was a huge part of my childhood and what my nostalgic video game memories consist of. I do wish I could've grown up with a 360, PS3, or Wii but I had a DS and flash games to keep me busy I suppose. I've spent more time in MKDS and NSMB than I can count. I didn't enjoy SM64 much as a kid though. Wish I played more pokemon back then. I played a bit of heartgold on a friend's DS but only started getting into pokemon in middle school once I discovered emulation. I've also been revisiting some of the DS games I've missed recently like TWEWY with a DSi LL I bought off ebay for $60. The dual IPS/larger screens make a big difference and even though as a kid I wouldn't have cared much as an adult my expectations have definitely grown. I also have a 3DS I bought off a friend in high school for $50 which I've had some good times with but not to the same level as I did with my DS as a kid. These days I'm more of a Sony guy with a PS5 and a PC and I'm not the happiest camper about Nintendo killing off the dedicated handheld line they had with the GB/DS lines. Switch lite isn't a replacement despite how much they can pretend they are. I can't put it in my pocket and bring it anywhere. Nintendo's horrendous anti consumer business practices are also very difficult for me to turn to a blind eye to these days as well. If sony came out with a Vita 2 with the major issues from the first one resolved (mostly talking about proprietary memory cards instead of SD cards) I would be ecstatic to be honest. Closest thing that exists these days to what I'm looking for is the GPD Win 4 but the price is a major turnoff even if I do at least have a heavy investment in a PC library of games at this point.
The DSi was the first console I ever owned, and Mario Kart DS was the fisrt game I ever played and I still play it to this day. I have so much nostalgia for it.
this video has me reminiscing about my 30+ hours in lego star wars:TCS, (which i still haven’t finished, because flying missions are the bane of my existence) and getting trouble for writing curse words in pictochat during study hall, glorious times
I think R4-type cartridges were a game-changer for people that had limited access to the broader selection of Nintendo games, whether due to remoteness or financial reasons. I buy a lot of games now that I can afford them, there are eShops, and there's regional pricing on platforms like Steam, but back when I was growing up, finding physical copies of very good but very niche titles just wasn't possible.
I would definitely recommend giving phantom hourglass another honest shake. Ofc the control scheme takes EVERYONE some getting used to, but you can do it and it plays just fine. Obviously they did it to give us analogue movement on the ds and thats something Ive grown to appreciate
One of the best things was in like 2011, I was at the airport and there was this other kid, he had a DS too, somehow we got talking and found out we both had Pokemon games so we battled and traded, still have some of the pokemon on my old save file! I agree 100% with never seeing the original model of the DS, I only saw it when I bought it years after. These things were the best for school trips, small enough that teachers and parents didn't immediately go "aha you took your DS" (there was always a no electronics rule) and we did exactly what you mentioned, I was the kid with Mario Party DS and my buddy was the kid with Mario Kart nothing beat spending 3 hours after bedtime playing these games. To this day the pokemon center night theme gives me chills due to how much my brother and I spent in the pokemon center trading and battling in the evening. Did anyone else get stuck really badly in pokemon ranger? I swear it took me years to get past the water part.
This is my first time watching a video from your channel and as someone who grew up with this wonderful handheld console you’ve really captured this moment in time for all of us 2000s kids. Keep it up you’ve earned a sub from a fellow Aussie
Having an older brother, I was used to “sharing” all of our consoles and games, but de DS was the first time I ever had my own console. I was one of those weirdos who had the “original” first edition of the DS, it used to be my brother’s before he got a black DS Lite for his birthday. But I think it might’ve been too great of a responsibility for a 7 year old to have, as I vividly remember the day I dropped my DS in the toilet just a few months after having it passed down to me :))) Ahh, such fond memories…
My black DS was built different. It alongside Pokémon Diamond survived sitting under a Bush for an entire winter and most of spring, and when I found it both of them still worked. Still have that Diamond cartridge today
The Nintendo DS, that thing and the Wii were my childhood, I remember my white DS lite I had, and later got a red mario anniversary addition DSiXL, alot of good memories playing with my cousin on our DS's, losts of memories, good times, nostalgia.
i was a rural kid and on my bus to school every single kid had a DS, and every single day we would play mario kart 7 to and from school, I remember the whole bus screaming and laughing, i remember when i found out about holding accelerate when the countdown hit 2 gives you a boost and how i was dominating all my games after that. it was truly some of the best memories i have, i don’t have my original pink DS lite that i got for my 6th birthday or something like that but i still do currently have a 3Dds I got for maybe my 10th or 11th birthday? crazy to think i’m turning 18 this year. I remember my mom convincing me to wait on getting a SP because when we went to GameStop they told us the DS was coming and I’m so glad I did, best handheld of all time, still play my lite 15 years later.
DPPt, HGSS, BW/B2W2, Pokemon Ranger, PMD, etc were my obsessions. I spent so many hours on them. But aside from that I have a whole storage bin filled with games I got over the years.
My favorite game of all time (Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team) is the primary reason my DS Lite's LR buttons don't work at all, and the down and B buttons are also not quite working properly. Because of this, I cannot soft-reset my DS. The LR buttons on my 3DS are also broken largely because of this lol
@film fan Yes, and the later Mystery Dungeon games use them even more (Super Mystery Dungeon is nigh unplayablt because you CAN'T use moves without the L button)
Mario Kart DS times were golden Times. Also the time where you play with complete Randoms on a trip or something. Download Game was the best thing in multiplayer history. Also Bomberman was THE Perfect Download Game.
I can't believe I just watched a whole video on the DS and the dude only got halfway through emerald. That's nutty, the ds had probably the best pokemon game lineup of any console
The Aus and European case looks like what some libraries out there DS and 3DS games in. I had no idea that was the Aus and European case until now. Yes USA libraries or at least NJ libraries let you borrow video games. It was my blockbusters but free and for longer at a time!
The DS was the first ever console I owned. I played on my brother’s DS since I was literally an infant and in 2010, I got a DSi for myself. I used to play New Super Mario Bros, Tetris DS, MK DS etc. The DS was the best handheld console imo.
I got a dsi for Christmas when I was four. Most of the games I got were those shovelware games for children, but I did have Mario 64 and new super Mario Brothers. I played Mario 64 for probably 100s of hours and it was the best thing ever to me.
I also got Spiderman 3 as my first DS game, but I didn't play DS that much as by that time we had an XBOX for the entire family (though only me and my brother played on it) which had a lot of games like Spy VS Spy, Aliens VS Predator, Lego Star Wars 1+2 (The Complete Saga was not out yet), Star Wars Battlefront 1+2, etc. Before then I had my GBA which is my true bedside companion with games like Ultimate Spiderman, Pokemon Emerald, Mario Bros 3, Ice Age 2, etc.
I still remember when me and my sister watch oír brother play cooking mama on his ds and when I was 12 I found it along Mario and Sonic in the olympic games I played it even thought my brother didnt like that I was using his things
I remember when I was a kid, I was looking at the Mario Kart DS manual, and saw that Shy Guy was playable. But because my english wasn't very good back then, I never found out how to play as him, and one of my classmates told me that to unlock Shy Guy, I had to get perfect scored and stars on every cup, on every dificulty (including Mirror CC). I gave up halfway through, thinking I would never see Shy Guy in this game, until I learned that all you need was to use the Download Play of the DS. I had never felt so stupid in my life.

Ah, the DS. Truly one of the most remarkable consoles ever.
Keep one making these great videos! I hope you end up getting the recognition you deserve!
I actually got stuck for a few years as a kid in Bowser’s Inside Story in the Flab Zone. I didn’t realize the bump/pimple thing you where supposed to hammer to learn the spin jump could be interacted with. I thought it was just a part of the environment since it was in front of a platform….
i legit shared the exact same experience, that’s so crazy
I got legit stuck for years over the giga carrot game. And got stuck a solid few months over wisdurm boss. Today I clear them both first try. Crazy
Ah yes the R4.
To this day I never owned a single retail game for my ds, but the R4's were nice. (Also you could actually connect to nintendo's official wi-fi servers on this thing, kinda insane lol.)
I never owned one but one of my classmates (still a good friend to this day) had/has one and we played alot of games together on it.
Funny you mentioned that the Phantom Hourglass was not a great game to start the Zelda series, it was the first Zelda game I ever played and got hooked instantaneously to it, taking to look for more games of the franchise, now I'm a big fan because of it
Same ahahahah
And sure I know the touch screen controls put a lot of hardcore zelda fans off but I actually kinda like it I mean sure it would've been nice to have an option to use the Dpad for basic movement but I don't mind it also I really like how you can draw maps in the game I wish more zelda games do that aside from Spirit Tracks
This, and the Wii are nostalga overload.
I still have my pink DS Lite!! Ah the memories!
Even though I have a 3DS I still love playing my DS games, it's just too good!
Pokémon Diamond and New Super Mario Bros was my childhood. I’ll always have memories playing my DS
2:16 "But unlike the pelage, this had Luigi!"
Unreal
A lot of people don't realize how risky it was to release a console with TWO screens.
I had 8 cousins. We loved to boot up Mario Kart DS together for local multiplayer at Grandma’s house. The 3DS took it up a notch with Smash 4 3DS.
Your videos continue to impress me. I found your channel only when you had two videos and your format is really nice to watch.
Thank you for the kind words! Hope you’ll be tuning in for all the vids to come
Can confirm the OG DS comment that no one around had it.
Keep it up!
homebrew and cheat cartridge's were so cool. It was like putting illegal imported parts on a car to me when i was young lol
It introduced me to so many games and franchises that I still love to this day
Getting a ds with an r4 was pretty much mandatory here in brazil
@film fan we didnt have games over here, and when we did they would cost half the cost of the ds, which was inflated to be around 500usd here around 2008-2010
@film fan for sure, nowadays i use it a lot to play romhacks too!
loved my dsi with my whole heart, and i’m so glad you mentioned nintendogs bc that was one of my favs along with pokémon black/white, cooking mama, and other various puzzle games. i was obsessed with the princess isabella: a witch’s curse series
new KoKerm video hype! also, congrats on 3k!
Mario kart ds might still be my favorite entry. I had Wii at the time too but very rarely had the tv to myself so I just played those tracks endlessly. I picked it up after 15 years and it’s still muscle memory
Not to mention that the DS and DS Lite have a freaking GameBoy Advance cartridge port!!!
Growing up in the 2000s I remember owning a Nintendo DS and new Super Mario Bros DS, Super Mario 64. DS and Mario kart DS were the gods of my childhood along with Spider-Man 3, Transformers and other movie tie-in games!
Black DS Lite + Professor Layton and the Curious Village + Pokemon Diamond = Bliss
One of my favourite memories was playing Mario Kart DS over local on coach journeys with friends.
Mario Kart DS was fire to me! I remember having that game when I got my ds in Christmas 2005. Crazy how a lot of people didn't see the og model in person I already knew people with the og ds model in 2005.
I remember as a kid everyone had either a r4 card or tt card for their DS consoles and the cards were everywhere and had the nickname "pirate cards" lol
i had a R4 card when i got my first ds and until know i never know really much about it one day i lost it but then i got a replacement R4 that even had more games
but most were not big known games but were fun to play until it started to freeze my switch
Great work on these. The videos are nothing revolutionary but you just remind me of things I'm nostalgic about. I appreciate them.
The DSi was the first console I ever owned, and Mario Kart DS was the fisrt game I ever played and I still play it to this day. I have so much nostalgia for it.
6:45 Me too! My Black DS lite broke randomly. You could definitely tell the build quality wasn't as good as the original version.
this video has me reminiscing about my 30+ hours in lego star wars:TCS, (which i still haven’t finished, because flying missions are the bane of my existence) and getting trouble for writing curse words in pictochat during study hall, glorious times
Actually it was 13 1/2 years without an original 2D Mario platformer before new super Mario bros as the last one was Super Mario Land 2 in 1992.
11:00 this was legit me with Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics last year
I remember always bringing my DS to school and just playing mario 64 those were such great times
I remember getting an action replay cartridge for my ds and bringing it to school. I was definitely one of the coolest kids in school for a while😎😎
One of the best things was in like 2011, I was at the airport and there was this other kid, he had a DS too, somehow we got talking and found out we both had Pokemon games so we battled and traded, still have some of the pokemon on my old save file!
Literally what the DS was all about, that is so awesome 🔥
My best memory of the Ds was playing mariokart Ds on the school bus using download play. We maxed out the amount of players
My black DS was built different. It alongside Pokémon Diamond survived sitting under a Bush for an entire winter and most of spring, and when I found it both of them still worked. Still have that Diamond cartridge today
Great video, just in time because I started playing again with my old DS two months ago!
5:00 creepiness aside I think it’s cool how the purple squares look like the intro for the GameCube, but two, bc two screens
The Nintendo DS, that thing and the Wii were my childhood, I remember my white DS lite I had, and later got a red mario anniversary addition DSiXL, alot of good memories playing with my cousin on our DS's, losts of memories, good times, nostalgia.
Your black Nintendo DS breaking theory actually just sparked some memories I'd forgotten about. Also Mario party DS is the best Mario party
I had AND STILL HAVE the old “clunky” ds AND it’s the limited edition red mario one! I’d love to send you a pic of it haha
i was a rural kid and on my bus to school every single kid had a DS, and every single day we would play mario kart 7 to and from school, I remember the whole bus screaming and laughing, i remember when i found out about holding accelerate when the countdown hit 2 gives you a boost and how i was dominating all my games after that.
it was truly some of the best memories i have, i don’t have my original pink DS lite that i got for my 6th birthday or something like that but i still do currently have a 3Dds I got for maybe my 10th or 11th birthday?
crazy to think i’m turning 18 this year. Time flies
I still have my lime green DS. Super princess peach and yoshi’s island DS were truly my lifeblood. if you could’ve heard my squeal when you used a clip at the beginning! Great video
I remember my mom convincing me to wait on getting a SP because when we went to GameStop they told us the DS was coming and I’m so glad I did, best handheld of all time, still play my lite 15 years later.
If it wasn't for the R4, I would have never played the Legendary Starfy
DPPt, HGSS, BW/B2W2, Pokemon Ranger, PMD, etc were my obsessions. I spent so many hours on them.
But aside from that I have a whole storage bin filled with games I got over the years.
I got a 3DS for my 7th birthday :) i still have it
My first introduction to video games was the N64, now everyone is looking at the DS the same way we did for the N64.
6:46 same, i even got the light blue as replacement as well😂
My favorite game of all time (Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team) is the primary reason my DS Lite's LR buttons don't work at all, and the down and B buttons are also not quite working properly.
Zelda minish cap is a hidden gem on the DS, I played it to over 100% completion.
My first zelda games were the DS games, and they are still my favorites.
I can't believe I just watched a whole video on the DS and the dude only got halfway through emerald. That's nutty, the ds had probably the best pokemon game lineup of any console
Black & White were the first main Pokémon games to have a fleshed out story (Colosseum was the true first, but that’s not a main series title)
@Elico 2589 how is it not a console????
@Elico 2589 Yeah, it's a portable handheld console..
3DS: Am I a joke to you?
Remembering scoring an Action Replay to catch Darkrai on the school bus.
9:50 The first guy says he's going to the store and the other two tell him to buy various snacks (two rice balls and a bun with meat inside)
R4 changed everything. Made our childhood awesome.
I remember saving up as a kid to buy the DS only for it to get stolen. SO I SAVED UP AGAIN!
This system is so special.
I remember dreaming posible Smash games for the DS and how hype they would be.
I havent played mario kart since like 2009 on my nieces ds and I just got my nintendo switch OLED and im happy with mario kart 8.
From New Zealand! I had the original DS, grey and chonky….. she lived a long life though
