I...actually could live here, after some getting used to. I have lived in a small Japanese apartment during my 2nd trip to Tokyo. It was uncomfotable at first, but after a few days it became fine.
For sure. This is my favourite timeline. I feel she was right about the phantom extra two points though. It doesn't matter how perfect a space is, until it's your space you'll never completely understand it. The difference between book smart and street smart.

Okazaki-san in Europe? Now that sounds like a fun adventure. Her reactions to things in Japan is already so wholesome. Imagine seeing the crazy architecture and sheer size difference in Europe😂
Especially the centuries old traditional homes. In France, Germany, The Netherland, UK, Ireland etc you can find still lived in houses that date back 400-500+ years. That's not even mentioning the castles and religious buildings that can be over a millennia old.
tiny house with queen size bed with sky view, indoor AND outdoor bath/shower, a garden, open space to read books, and even cats and butterflies? That's a famous architect for ya, it's more fun, lovely and functional than many spacious houses out there
I think its safe to say we all love Ayaka-san, to be honest, if she made a YT channel, blog, or newsletter where we could get her insights on cool architecture I'd 1000% follow. I'm a super amateur lover of architecture so Norm visiting all these uniquely designed places absolutely warms my heart!
I mean, I could honestly just sit there watching her drink tea all day. Even if she were to be silent, I could easily just sit there, watching 16 hours per day with ease. Even with her cute bubbly personality, she exudes an aura of calmness, and as a lover of peace and quiet, I mean it truly, that people like Okazaki-san, are a rare treasure, especially here in the west.
I love how she walks in and immediately: "it's like pure happiness." Fascinating. With the grey walls and the vaulted ceiling, there are definitely those out there who would say it feels cold and distant. Absolutely fascinating. Personally I love the outdoor bath the most. My favorite space in this house.
I think its the character of the place? If it was empty with no greenery and well though out decorations, I think it would perhaps feel a lot more depressing. But the design is so well thought out, and the decoration and plants give it a level of character which makes it an awesome home.
@@jonson856 I have found the same thing. The high ceiling and interesting shapes make the difference between brutalist and "blank canvas". The difference being that the latter gives you some creative freedom when it comes to decoration (or lack thereof).
for me its the contrast between concrete and natural elements such as wood, greens, wind, i can even imagine water as one of the elements well incorporated in the design if it rains. when you see concrete it feels "doomed" as if nature's been defeated by humankind's ginormous engineering might. but with nature contrasting the concrete you get the sense that peace between nature and man made buildings has been reached. its almost as if the plants doesn't mind with concrete slabs being there, the grey makes the greens of the leaves and browns of the woods pop a lot more vibrantly! natural sunlight is free to enter through the roof, the wind have no restrictions in flowing through the structure, the open bath feels like water is actually much welcomed there. its definitely a space designed by a respected designer that's well in tune with his senses and feelings. you can tell by his manners too!
I wish I had Ayaka's outlook. She finds positivity in everything, no matter how small. I love her insight. It's like she is seeing everything for the first time. I wish she had her own channel on architecture. Oh and love you too Norm. 😉
Okazaki-san, honestly, radiates the vibes of someone who is really chill and fun to be around. Can totally see her being friends with absolutely everyone with her joyful spirit.
The couple appears so content and appreciative of every aspect of their living space. It really feels like the architect designed the perfect home for them.
A trip to Europe?! Sounds like that would be fun series. I hope you two could actually plan such a fun trip together. Love the videos with Okazaki-san.
I'm surprised more people aren't talking about how a famous architect lives in this house. I suppose he designed it himself, and it makes me appreciate it more. A famous architect probably has other options, but he chose an intimate and cosy set up for him and his wife
Ugh Okazaki-san’s insight on everything is just so good and interesting. I’m in love with how she sees the world and sees the use in every little thing 🥰 She’s always a delight to see in your videos Norm! ❤ PS: Petition to being Okazaki Ayaka to Europe to check out architecture!!!
Thirded! My folks travel in Europe a lot, and they came back with a bunch of interesting ideas that influenced how I renovated my own house. For example, some interior styles place the light switch outside of the room instead of you having to fumble around the doorway to find the switch. My bathroom is set up that way, and while it took a little while to adjust, it is SO much more convenient than fumbling for a switch that I need to click on and off multiple times throughout the day.
Ayaka is so amazingly creative. I love everything she points out about things. It really makes me look forward to every video with her. Honestly, she seems so fun to hang around with.
I love it when Japanese people give tours of their houses. They explain everything they put there and why they put it there in such detail it really shows how much thought goes into interior design when they furnish their home. Resourcefulness and ingenuity are part of the Japanese charm for me, and most times when they talk about things they made or designed they seem very proud but always humble about it, it puts a smile on my face to see them talk about small passions like ingenuous home design like that, I might even covet their peace of mind.
Okazaki-san is such a fun person, I really love the unique insights she offers into living spaces and her views on very tiny flats that people would otherwhise dismiss. And she has such a positivity to her too. I probably still wouldnt want to live there myself, but its still quite nice.
I love the way she kept her mom's sewing machine as a memory and that table looks so well made. My mum passed away last year and she owned a machine too, I'm gonna do the same thing with it
I love how they've embraced a more minimalist life to live in a space they love, but they don't sacrifice the things that bring them happiness. A place for everything and everything in its place.
I actually have a hard time imagining myself living comfortably in such a small space but this house is so brilliantly put together I could see myself happy in a house like this. Also, my profession is in tailoring and I love seeing people make creative uses out of old treadle machines. Also I would LOVE to see Okazaki-san in Europe!
I could see myself living in that space, but not with someone else and I would probably have different items in there because I have different needs for my living space. I studied fashion and still make a lot of stuff at home so I would probably devote a big % of that space to storage of materials, patterns, books and clothes. And a large table, perhaps one that can be extended when it's time to cut fabric or draw large patterns.
Yeah it's really cute and all, but as a disabled person, this house is not accessible at all. I hope this couple will age well and be able to live there for a long time!
This is amazing. Just like a magical spot in the middle of the city... I'm truly envious how secure Japan is, to allow people living so freely and without fear to being robbed or invaded. I feel happy for this happy couple!
I don't think I could ever give up living in the country side, but I'm always taken aback by how appealing and simple these tiny apartments are. Such a vibe 😌
Huge respect to the home owners for making the absolute most out of their “small space”, it’s mind blowing how much is possible when you build to maximize every centimeter rather than just building in conventional practices Also Ayaka’s personality is so infectious 😊
I've been greedily following these types of videos. My husband and I became Empty Nesters last year, and we live in a 5bd/3ba house. We are realizing that it makes no sense for the two of us to have such a large space. We don't plan on selling it, because we know here in the SF Bay Area that housing prices will never drop down to what we purchased it for. $125,000 twenty seven years ago, and now worth $957,000+. We do want to find a smaller place to retire in not limited to the US.
I'm so in love with Ayaka. Something about her vibe gives me so much peace and I bet she's the type of person you can just chill in silence with without it being uncomfortable.
Wow, it’s nice to see Ayaka again, I remember watching the video touring her house when I was looking at studying abroad. I also think simple living like this can be the best for keeping everything clean and organized since you don’t have a lot of room for junk or collecting random items! Plus the way the light shines in gives the house such a warm feel.
Ooooh YES! I live for these apartment tour videos. The ingenuity in the architecture of the places you find is always mindblowing. Getting to see Okazaki-san come back again is always a treat! Thanks!!
I am amazed by how much thought and love can be condensed into such a small space and that there are people that will go out of their way to make such a space truly theirs. Great video and please make more of these with Ayaka - san
I actually really love this space. It is very well done and the ceilings make it feel much bigger than it is. I would live there and I would enjoy every minute of it too.
I imagine it is wonderful to take a bath when it rains. Also, Ayaka really brightens everything up with her presence. An European tour with her I would really really love to see. 😊
It's always nice to see Norm and Ayaka having fun just touring various tiny houses across Japan. Especially as Norm provides the commentary while Ayaka has the architectural insight on the subject really helps provide a different insight into tiny living spaces
Ayaka-san's energy is immaculate and comfortable. I re-watched the tour of her home because the way she speaks and her mannerisms are so enjoyable to watch. We're all glad that she's come along and look forward to seeing her perspective on other builds again :)
this video was good on so many levels! I love that you have made a friend and take her along to these different houses. the owner of this space seems delightful as well. I love everything they did here to make the space feel open and large despite looking no bigger than a shipping container.
Skylights are so perfect for a tiny house! Just less need to even have to turn on the light! Also, it's really amazing what small encounters can turn into large things on UA-cam! I'm sure Ayaka never thought she'd meet Hosaka! Love to continue seeing this series with Ayaka!
I'm so happy you actually discovered this beautiful gem of a house! I instantly recognized it from Never too small channel that also covered it, but it's so nice to see it under your lens and your insight about it alongside Okazaki-san. She's a breath of fresh air, and her comments always capture the essence of the place very well! Of which congratulations to Okazaki-san on graduating!
just started watching this channel, Okazaki-san is so cute, I love her reactions! All the videos I've seen so far have been really relaxing! Thank you for posting :)
Okazaki-san has the best personality. Joyful, curious, humble, and very respectful. The whole thing about this house having so many undiscovered points that you can only discover by living there is so insightful.
I really like this house! It's got an industrial feel to it with the concrete and pegs, but there's a lot of love in it too and everything has been thought about so carefully to utilise every millimetre of space. It's great! And I love Okazaki-san's reaction to it all too. You two could make such a brilliant Euro apartment series and I'd love to see her in it! She comes across as such a lovely young woman.
One of the best unexpected things about this channel's history was the Norm and Ayaka friendship that bloomed from a chance meeting for a video. May you both continue to enjoy finding tiny homes together in the future haha.
I cannot get over this house and it's shower and bath. The concrete with the greenery, the vinyl collection, the high ceilings, it all looks so fresh and will inspire my dream house. Thank you Norm for covering this house, modern Japanese architecture truly fascinates me.
I absolutely love that Okazaki-san returns for these kinds of videos! Her enthusiasm is so contagious and seeing her perspective for different design choices and how they're sometimes a total 180° flip to how I'd look at it is so interesting. I REALLY need to see more of that record collection! I've got my own and I'm really interested in seeing the differences between record collections and music tastes between different cultures.
Morning Norm, Thanks for bringing us along on another interesting adventure. I'm happy this couple was very open to sharing their home with us. Enjoy your stay and hope your meet up is a blast! Stay safe and stay healthy, eh?
Well Norm, this is it; my final comment on your (as of now) newest video! This has been nearly 300 videos, nearly 300 comments, and so much Norm time in the last month, I couldn’t have asked for a better journey. Watching your life unfold over the years has been one of the biggest joys of my entire time on the internet. Seeing your transition from new UA-camr and vlogger to full on filmmaker and documentarian is astounding. You’ve worked so hard to bring us all so much content; you’ve truly put your heart and soul into this channel and it shows. The passion, excitement, and overall joy you’ve encapsulated over the years never fails to bring a smile to my face, and I know you’ve touched so many lives with your videos. Through the highs, and the lows, your journey has been an inspiration and you’ve really captured some incredibly unique and informative aspects of, not only Japan, but the world at large. Thank you, Norm, for all you’ve done, and all you’love undoubtedly do going forward; you are truly inimitable.
You scared me for a second there Matt. I'm so glad this comment was written with future tense because your last though beautiful and spot on, had me worried because it felt like somebody wanting another to know how they've impacted them because they're leaving to go drill a whole in an asteroid and may not make it back home.
I love when Ayaka is in these videos. She has the most lovely personality. She just seems to notice and appreciate the world and she makes me do that more too.
I really love the design of this home. All the little details are amazing. I always love Ayaka's reactions to different tiny homes. She notices different things I would never think anything about.
I'm scandinavian, and I would love to see Akaya's reaction to our traditional wood cabins. They're usually quite remote, old ones are handmade and is the quintessential definition of a "cozy place". And of course I would love to see her react to gothic architecture.
I love that the skylights and big windows allow you to have living plants in all parts of the building, not just near the exterior walls. I think that definitely helps carry that sense of being connected to the outdoors, even in a house that's majority concrete. And since there are so many plants just outside and across the walkway, it kind of feels like little bits of them are sneaking in over time. It's super whimsical, which I love. The airline cabinet is genius, too.
Ayaka congrats on your graduation! ❤️ This house warmed up my heart. It has such a charm. It's the best and I loved the idea of sewing machine used as a table. Concrete creates an amazing ambience.
This house is like a work of art. Beautifully crafted, super efficient and open with a connection to nature as well as tons of natural light. I love the use of the airline cart for storage it holds so much and the table was a beautiful repurpose. I would love a house like this. One of, if not the best I've seen so far.
I’m not really into interior design or architecture, but this house just makes me appreciate it so much more. From the outside, I assumed it would be so cramped on the inside, but it feels more spacious than my house even though it’s so much smaller! I wish that I could go there to look at all the little details.
As always Okazaki-san is an absolute delight to watch explore a space. This is definitely one of the coolest small spaces you've explored so far, I love the use of every little nook and bolt. As Okazaki-san said It's clear everything was chosen and placed with love. My Favorite part has to be the old sewing machine table. I just adore vintage and inventive things, so neat!
Such a lovely place! And thank you for bringing Okazaki-san along as well - it's always a delight to see her enthusiastic, wholesome reactions. And congrats to her for graduating!
You showcase great spaces and homes for the world to see and always highlight their charm, and Ayaka is always offering such an optimistic perspective of every place you show her.
Thank you for providing us with another tiny home video. Ayaka is so cute here ❤ As she said, every item in their home seems to be chosen with love. Love how they decided to furnish their home 🏠
It’s so interesting how you inevitably live a more minimal type of lifestyle in these sorts of smaller homes. Definitely made me think it helps you enjoy the smaller things in life. Thanks again for another great video Norm!
This reminds me of when I used to live in a tiny apartment as a child, really comforting, everything was in place, neat and close XD. Also, we need so lil to lead a good and peaceful life~ Thank you for the series ✨ Also, would love to have you in Europe! If you're thinking about Romania, let me know. It would be my pleasure to show you around~
The sheer attention to detail of many Japanese artists is both admirable and thought-provoking. It is what makes is so incredibly special and impressive.
Aw that's awesome that Ayaka got the chance to talk to the owner! Watching these tiny house videos always make me feel shameful for how inefficient I use my own spaces lol. but seeing how creative people can get with their living space is fun!
Huge congrats to Okazaki-san for graduating!! I'm always so happy to see her in your videos, she's got such a fun outlook on things that I've really learnt a lot from. Plus, she loves cats like I do!
This is such a wholesome video. The way they use those small spaces is sooo cool. Also the idea of you and Ayaka checking out wacky architecture in Europe is also very interesting
That apartment is beautiful and beautifully, tranquil and serene!!! The extremely high ceilings is the best point of the apartment!!!! Absolutely gorgeous and I love it ❤️
I'm impressed that the design of the house allows them to use the space so efficiently. My apartment is probably twice the size of their home and I'm still trying to figure out where to put everything. My favorite part of the house is the table. I love learning about family history, and I feel like that table is the perfect way to take something that was so important to her mother and fit it into their space.
i live in a house with 1 room, two half rooms, a whole ass bathroom, a living room, a dining room and a kitchen, and a sorts of patio (its the entry hallway as it is several appartments in one place but its not many people and we all know each other so we use the hallway for plants and others) and also a small personal patio, and still, there are things on the floor on every room and its a mess and i feel claustrophobic like i need somthing bigger, i need this architect to redo my house :')
This space is very impressive. I love all the little details and how they utilize everything so efficiently. Great to see Okazaki-san as well! Was so awesome that she got to chat with the architect/homeowner! Must have been special
Oooh it's always fun when Okazaki-san joins! Congratulations on graduating! The tiny houses are always so inspiring and always make me look at my own home in a new light, I nearly always end up having a bit of a clear out after watching these lol
I'm always excited to see another 'tiny home' episode pop up on the channel. Always fascinating to see how people maximise space and make it their own, and Okazaki-san is always such a burst of life to boot. One of these days you need to get someone tall and big to join you and Okazaki on one of these visits just for the contrast haha!
This is quite cool. I feel like this would be good for a single person or couples that are just starting. And seeing Ayaka again, her energy is on another level.
I LOVE this series. Okazaki-san is so insightful and adorable. As always so appreciate your content Norm! (And yes, Tokyo Lens European tour with Okazaki-san!)
I honestly really love this... It's amazing to see how "big" some of us countries live... So much empty space. These homes feel lived in, comfortable and just so light.
Love these tiny house/apartment videos, because they’re all so unique. I’d love to see and hear Ayaka her reactions to tiny western houses/apartments. Also congratulations to Ayaka for graduating! Now she can design tiny places herself, hope she gets to do so anyway. 😊
I love these videos of the two of you going around and checking out places, they're nice and relaxing and you guys have such great ideas on where to put stuff and utilize space that it's mind blowing to me. Love your videos :)
Aw man I love the vids with Ayaka so much! Her pure joy and enthusiasm always shines through, its so heartwarming 🥲 Much love as always Norm! Thanks so much for showing us the amazing parts and stories of Japan we’d probably never get to see as tourists ❤
Yay Okazaki san Small Apartment series again, Thank you very much for making this series i love it, Can't wait to see Okazaki san going to Europe, please make it, we will be very happy to watching it ❤️❤️❤️
I love watching the reactions of of Ayaka! She is fascinating to watch. Please do more colab with her! Why doesn't she have her own channel? I'd watch her!
While they definitely do, this is a way more usable amount of space and actually has everything. There are many apartments of this size, even in the US, being split by people (like I did in college). It's even easier if you are sharing a bed.

"No matter how small"
Insert joke about how she likes to squeeze into little nooks and crannies to relax. 😄

In EU tiny houses will be those Trailer & Container Houses. Also the Shed Houses.

Exactly,I think he specifically designed it for the two of them only, but very livable ❤
He did design it himself
Is he famous?
I think he lives somewhere in the middle of Tokyo and the land here is vvvvery expensive so he chose to live tiny
I just love how they're so happy to have cats and butterflies passing by. That's just so wholesome.

Okazaki-san is so wholesome and i love her view on architecture, i really hope she gets to see Europe and how vastly different the architecture is
Yes, take this girl to Europe! May she be blessed to travel the world.
Huge respect to the home owners for making the absolute most out of their “small space”, it’s mind blowing how much is possible when you build to maximize every centimeter rather than just building in conventional practices
Also Ayaka’s personality is so infectious 😊
Well he designed the house so it was made deliberately.
If i had that house, I would make it real simple. Just a bedroom, computer area, keep the bathroom and all that and a dedicated spot for my cat
Congrats to Ayaka for graduating!! 🎉 Always love seeing her in videos. Now I want to see her reacting to European architecture so bad!!!
I imagine it is wonderful to take a bath when it rains. Also, Ayaka really brightens everything up with her presence. An European tour with her I would really really love to see. 😊
i really like the readaptive use of old sewing machine as a dining table/work space 😭🥰. It makes me wanna save my grandmother sewing machine as well ❤
It's always nice to see Norm and Ayaka having fun just touring various tiny houses across Japan.
I really enjoy seeing her expressions and hearing her thoughts on these tiny places. It is a joy to see.
I love Ayaka so much. Her presence is so comforting and genuine.
Morning Norm,
Thanks for bringing us along on another interesting adventure. I'm happy this couple was very open to sharing their home with us.
Enjoy your stay and hope your meet up is a blast!
Stay safe and stay healthy, eh?
It's a really beautiful house. I'm really grateful that this family were willing to share their home with all of us.
Also, once I make it to Japan, if I come across you, it would be my honor to buy you a drink or something
God I always love seeing these Tiny Houses. Seriously makes me wish I could experience one in Japan myself.
Also, notification squad, let's goooo!
I love how happy they are and how happy he is talking about his "porch"
Another great video Norm. Ayaka is always a delight to watch, with the kind of enthusiasm she brings to your architecture videos.
The fact that he keeps his house so open until 3 am says a lot about Japanese culture
As a Newyorkers, I can relate to this
I have walked dark streets of Tokyo at 2am and felt absolutely safe.
Also the climate. Weather and bugs+ animals would make that a really bad idea here
Here in Mexico its the same what are you talking about
This is so cool, I can't imagine the vibe during summer time. So awesome
i love how he checks to see if its still sturdy and in place when she complements his work its kinda wholesome
Ayaka's energy is very contagious the positivity and joy. I am excited what her designs would be.
Also, we need so lil to lead a good and peaceful life~ Thank you for the series ✨
Also, would love to have you in Europe! If you're thinking about Romania, let me know. It would be my pleasure to show you around~
It's just so mind blowing how well they can make use of small places, and also make them feel cosy and give them a touch of their personality!
Ayaka is so much fun! She is so positive and seems so sweet!
Great to re-watch some of your older videos. I could definitely see myself living in such a place, it's simply perfect!
Absolutely gorgeous and I love it ❤️
The airline trolley for storage is amazing!!! such an amazing idea!
Congrats Okazaki San! Very well done on graduating
I love seeing how incredible these tiny houses are and Okazaki San’s perspective on them! That outdoor bath was 🔥
I'm impressed that the design of the house allows them to use the space so efficiently.
100% time for the European architecture tour! ❤❤❤ And this is absolutely incredible use of the space he has. Truly loved this one, Norm!
Absolutely amazing tiny house and use of space. Really loving the use of concrete contrasted with wood and decorations. Mind-blowing, really.
I love this space, it has heart and you can see the love that the couple put into it, too.
I LOVE this series. Okazaki-san is so insightful and adorable. As always so appreciate your content Norm! (And yes, Tokyo Lens European tour with Okazaki-san!)
Love the way they communicate, even using their own language, they still understand each other.
Why wouldn’t they understand each other? 😂
Oh idl love to see what she has to say about the tiny houses popping up all over the place now
I love these videos of the two of you going around and checking out places, they're nice and relaxing and you guys have such great ideas on where to put stuff and utilize space that it's mind blowing to me. Love your videos :)
I want to come here and be on the record to say this IS my favorite video on the internet.
Aw man I love the vids with Ayaka so much! Her pure joy and enthusiasm always shines through, its so heartwarming 🥲
Much love as always Norm!
It’s crazy how they can utilise such small space so effectively and it’s always a pleasure to see Ayaka in these small space videos.
While they definitely do, this is a way more usable amount of space and actually has everything. There are many apartments of this size, even in the US, being split by people (like I did in college). It's even easier if you are sharing a bed.
