@@whatthehellcat I have 2 freezer/fridges for my RV the main one built in, and a 2nd mini one for longer camping trips, and when more family is with us, and one late fall during our normal winterizing/cleaning day before putting it in storage about 1hr 1/2 from home, I forgot to leave the doors cracked, and came back to black mold city the next spring, and it took me a full day of scrubbing to get it all out(I'm a bit of an overkill bill), and another week of airing them out with a combo of a lemon juice wipe down, and leaving baking soda trays to get the smell out before we could use them again. so now I put a wedge in the doors when not in use to keep them from closing, along with a bit of tape to keep them from from swinging open, and risk breaking the hinges, so that does not happen again hopefully.

I grew up in Japan from age 6 to 18. Went to American school in Tokyo but our parents wanted to live in traditional Japanese homes. We had 6 kids (a lot more than the traditional Japanese family!) We made the futon closets into double bed "rooms" for two kids to each closet! And yes, they were totally like our own tiny rooms with all our stuff in there! Mom and Dad put their futons in the futon closet off the main living room in the daytime and put the zabutons and small table in there at night and slept on the tatami floor of the living room at night. This brings back so many great memories!

My knowledge of a "typical" Japanese house is something small you would find in Tokyo, but here you go showing of an apartment that is more gigantic than mine! As for low ceilings or anything hanging low from ceilings they are the bane on my existence since my head seems to be attracted to hitting itself into everything.
Also I love the same clothing selection for each day, I also got a shirt and jeans combo that I liked so much that I just bought multiple of them and keep wearing the same style almost everyday!

@@canadasreallybig I think they know, their phrasing covers that. They were saying that because of the sensationalized focus on tiny Tokyo apartments they had the impression that all typical Japanese homes were around that size, not that they thought this was typical of Tokyo or even near the city at all.
Also even with the wide angle this seems to be a pretty big size. Four bedrooms with a living room, small kitchen, separate entryway and dedicated laundry nook is quite a lot, they'd have to all be closet sized for that not to be an impressive amount of space by apartment standards. There are literal houses in my suburb that might legitimately be smaller.

Nice tour, that place seems bigger than a lot of houses being built in the USA. The food costs are great. You always hear naysayers about how expensive and cramped Japan is, but it's relief to see it's possible.

    • @miki_mochi
      @miki_mochi 2 роки тому +45

I think that the "myth" of Japan being expensive is probably because it *used* to be but inflation happened everywhere else and didn't really happen in Japan so much (apart from rent). Eating out is super cheap in Japan since there's a culture for it. And the "cramped" stuff comes from the fact that most foreigners try to live in the heart of Tokyo or Osaka. Which may also contribute to the claims of it being expensive since space is at a premium and that means rent in those areas can be pricey for something nice that has substantial size. If you're willing to move a bit out of Tokyo/Osaka, then you can find larger places for decent prices. Overall, though, if you're mindful you can get by very cheaply and comfortably in Japan. :)

It never ceases to amaze me how efficiently the space is used in Japanese apartments.
I did the something similar with my house though. The master bedroom is my Home Office and workspace since it has so much room to actually work and store all my stuff. I took the small bedroom because I only sleep in there no TV and phone goes on charge on the dresser when I go inside. I found the dedicated sleep-only space separated from the rest of the house helps me get better sleep.

You could rent that closet out if you were in Tokyo, Norm! And that Dave Clark is certainly not $90… I got a great deal on mine which is a slightly newer model for like 150

Kudos to you on the Pilot's license, Norman. What a huge apartment - generally speaking. I think you could open a 3-tiered capsule hotel in only one of the rooms

12:45 That's totally me. Except i have 11 identical black t-shirts. It seems overly minimalistic, but it's really all you need if you have trousers, shoes and watches to balance it.

That's such a nice sized apartment! I'm always so amazed at the CHEAP but delicious bentos (esp on sale!) in Japan which goes against the "cooking at home is cheaper" rule. It's just more time efficient and less effort to go out and buy. Although I do think I cook pretty well!

There's a weird vibe with this place, it's like my grandmother's house built in the 1960's, but in a sorta of very traditional/modern western style. Only the odd bathroom layout and Tatami room really set it apart.

Man that was one huge apartment for Japanese standards, my Tokyo apartment was 21sqm and I still could find space that I didn't use 😄
So Norm, when can I move in? I make a awesome nutritious steel cut oatmeal 😁

I haven't seen many videos show up lately in my feed from you when I have UA-cam open, thanks to the UA-cam algorithm. Congratulations on being a flight student now! I'm not sure exactly when it will be happening, but I will be ending up becoming a missionary in Japan, I will be around the city of Osaka, when I move there. I have been a long time subscriber of yours, I think you were under 50k subscribers when I first subscribed.

Oh wow this place is huuuuge ! I understand when you say you don't need that much space. That must be a little too much for just one person... But really nice anyway ! I hope you find a nice place that suits your criteria soon ! :)

This is a pretty amazing apartment! I've found that with apartments out here, you really need to take the time to look in order to find great spots. I looked for almost 3 months and managed to find an amazing, affordable 2 bedroom apartment in Nakano which is rare. But I'll probably end up moving further outside tokyo because I know I'll want more space

Amazing place! I recently stumbled over your channel and fell in love with it instantly! Have lived in Japan myself a few times, but never managed for more than 6 month at a time, due to money. So I'm curious about how you managed to live in Japan for this long, while running a UA-cam channel, and then go to flight school! Is it all about pinching those sweet Yens? Or you can make a living out of UA-cam? Super glad to see that you get the chance to fulfill your dreams, and wish you all the best on your journey! Will be exciting to tag along, and get inspired!

The size of the apartment surprised me. It's pretty big! One of the many things I love about some japanese houses is the bathtub... An old dream of mine. Just perfect. Also the warm sit, the tatami... You get the idea. 😂
