If you want a less popular one with VERY different vocals, check out *Meshuggah - Spasm* !!! Cheers from Australia, my man.
It would probably be tedious to do this but listen to the entire album "Catch Thirtythree". It is a concept album where each song starts where the last one ended. So basically one really long meshuggah song.
Totally support Spasm being your next reaction. It's in my top 3 Meshuggah songs
PERIPHERY
@@Pfunkdabomb Catch 33 is their undisputed masterpiece and quite possibly the greatest metal record of all time ❤️ it’s not easy going though
The connective tissue gave the stone motion, and the stone came back to break the bones they were attached to. It's a really gnarly way of saying you get what you give.
The song is about revenge (and its futility). The title is in reference to a quote by 16th century English cleric Jeremy Taylor: "Revenge... is like a rolling stone, which, when a man hath forced up a hill, will return upon him with a greater violence, and break those bones whose sinews gave it motion."
@@slbstmrd ya it was in the beginning of the video
New Millenium Cyanide Christ.
Very catchy and headbang from the second it starts till the end.
Plus one of the most expensive video clip ever made.
Obviously way over budget
This!
Yeah those were pretty high quality pencils
@@zildpais they obviously blew a ton of money but those incredibly bold and creative visuals frame the song in such a striking way, I'm sure their label came around eventually
@@ReverendMeta hahaha most epic visualizations ever
Behind the Sun by Meshuggah. Very underrated, it starts off as a slow crawl and just builds and builds to this massive sounding force. Imo
Meshuggah - Future Breed Machine
Edit: I guess that's more of a popular pick but DEFINITELY do this one
finally:)
Its popular among fans but I haven't seen anyone react to it yet. I don't see a lot of reacts to their older stuff.
This is the song that got me into extreme metal, so yes please :)
“Here I am in the hand of a sterile hate, the new control, I can not wake, I am not asleep!!!”
If you want more of Jens Kidman, the "I Am Colossus" is a must. It is quite vocal focus and it makes Jens sounds so _colossal_ . When you hear him scream in that song, you would believe that _he is Colossus_ .
DANCERS TO A DISCORDANT SYSTEM PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE. THAT IS LITERALLY THE BEST MESHUGGAH SONG. (YES I ACTUALLY THINK ALL CAPS MAKES A DIFFERENCE)
This was funny lol, caps for sure made a difference 🤣🤣
Been pushing this song too!! Definitely one of their best!!
Maybe as the Orphidian Trek live version. The audio quality is great and it would also showcase Meshuggahs lighting skills and the general trance-like ambience in the crowd. I also prefer the guitar solo in the live version to the one on the album.
I dont know if is their best song, because is kind impossible to pick one lol, but its a great one!
@@DrewFortune97 Do the live version.
Dancers in a discordant system is a glorious meshuggah track
This is easily the most overlooked song by Meshuggah.
to
You'd be the first person to react to Meshuggah's whole discography on youtube, this would make me eternally happy. They have no bad songs and so much more experimental stuff from the early days to discover.
Oh and also basically anything from the criminally underrated Chaosphere. You're welcome. And fun fact Jens Kidman the singer is 52 years old or older. Haha
Alright, less popular track imo:
MESHUGGAH - BEHIND THE SUN
Definitely hits like a MOUNTAIN
Was just about to recommend this one 👌
Holy shit and it never lets up.
An underrated song and honestly an incredible one.
I suggest Perpetual black second
That was the song that popped my Meshuggah cherry. I watched their DVD and basically died.
This is a good one for the unpopular song suggestion. NEEDS to be the remastered version, way more massive
Absolutely!
I think “Car Bomb” are worth checking out. They’re a newer band, influenced by Meshuggah, but they really have their own thing going. Very unique.
Secrets within secrets GOES SO FUCKIN HARD!!!
@@gibsoadstudios648 Good idea! Fade out or Scattered Sprites would be awesome
Ahhh yes my dude. Have u seen them live?
Car bomb sound like ass hole
I'd love to see a reaction to them! I've heard them being described as "meshuggah on acid", and I think that's pretty accurate xD
"make sure to spam the comments with what I should do next"
MARROW. It's one of their less popular tracks, so a good next choice... hehe. ;)
Marrow is fucking great, but for maximum wow factor I'd suggest I am Colossus. I can already see Drew lose his mind when the breakdowns hit...
Admittedly I’m not sure of the popularity of the song but I would suggest Stifled or The Hurt That Finds You First
Marrow is so worthy
Marrow is good, I am always partial to Lethargica too.
Dancers to a Discordant System
Lyrically and musically mind blowing
Meshuggah is one of the most influential bands in the history of metal. Their importance can not be overstated. When it comes to timesignatures their songs are mostly written in the quite ordinairy 4/4, but their MASTERY make it sound like something out of this world. There are a lot of different time signatures played by the various instruments (including the vocals), but it still is 4/4 that is the «foundation» of the songs.
Anyway; as a fan since their early days I can strongly recomend pretty much anything from their epic MASTERPIECE Chaosphere. And If I got to choose; Neurotica. Sounds like something that could be released in 25 years...🤘
Absolutely true. Was just learning Dancers to a Discordant System. When the intro drops, the riff goes 7/4 + 5/4 + 8/4 then loops back around to reset with the drums while theyre doing 4/4. Really is a time signature salad with syncopations everywhere, while maintaining the 4/4 pulse.
"COMBUSTION"!!!!! ;-) Talk about the most wicked riff ever. "I Am Colossus" is really good, too.
I love Colossus
Im Really partial to Meshuggah Dancer's to a discordant system
It's their best work, arguably
@@acurseofconstantobstacle5603 it truly is, and it's so much fun to play
A lesser known but REALLY good piece of Meshuggah is Closed Eye Visuals. Complex, funky and downright brutal!
Love this song! More Meshuggah I’d recommend would be Combustion, Obzen, Dancers to a Discordant System, Behind the Sun, I am Colossus and Violent Sleep of Reason
Also, I’ve noticed you don’t have any Monuments reactions yet. I think you’ll really enjoy “I, The Creator”
The amazing thing with Meshuggah is that pretty much all their songs are in 4/4 but they use polyrhythms (i.e multiple rhythms at the same time) in a way that makes the riffs sound kinda wierd. But once you find the 4/4 groove, man then you get hooked!
Just like someone said earlier, the hi-hat is the one thing to follow in order to find the 4/4 beat!
Been a fan ever since I heard them the first time around 10 years back!
Meshuggah - Lethargica has one of the filthiest breakdowns of all time 🔥
Also not meshuggah, but essentially the same is After the burial: songs like
Cursing Akhenaten or in flux slap hard
Lethargica is one of their best songs of all time. The slower breakdowns in their live shows are even better than the recording.
Essentially the same? What the fuck?
Count it as 4/4. Snare hits on 3. That's why you can groove to it so naturally despite it seeming to be an odd time signature....but they mask it with odd accents. Kick drum more or less mimics bass and guitar riffs. Classic Meshuggah!
Follow the hi hat!! Haha.
I'm loving you getting into Meshuggah, I remember your first reaction. Haha.
I will be the sole voice asking for Rational Gaze. A firm playlist favourite of mine for years.
Awesome reaction as ever, I'm loving your journey.
❤️
Dude “Dancers to a discordant system” do either the Live or studio version!! One of Meshuggah best musical tracks. Idk why more people ain’t pushing this song!! Cheers!
If you want to hit next level Meshuggah try 'Behind the Sun'. It's an often overlooked song, but easily one of their best!
It has a bit of a Gojira sound to it, which is not a bad thing really
AGREED 100%
@@BJforthelife you mean gojira sounds a bit like behind the sun
@@gilligan80 nope, behind the sun has the Gojira-like sound from the "From Mars to Sirius" album (which kinda gave Gojira their own style, which they have evolved over the years to what we have now), which came out some years before Koloss
@@BJforthelife too bad then that it sounds like stuff they did on nothing... which came out well... you know
The Mouth Licking What You've Bled is one of Meshuggah's more underrated songs imo
Yes!
Future breed machine, Soul burn and Sane are all early (pre 8-string era) songs that you NEED to look into! Their early albums "Destroy Erase Improve" and "Chaosphere" are just legendary!
They basically spawned the entire "Djent" genre.
SOUL BURN, yesss!
If you dont get the groove, U gotta listen to it over and over and once it clicks its insane
Dancers to a Discordant System! Man, it's 10 minutes of fukn epic. And the beat during the guitar solo is my fave Meshuggah rhythm section ever
I feel like you would love the grooves in Rational Gaze and New Millenium Cyanide Christ. For a less popular track, go with Spasm.
Yeeeees please!
I would also love to see him react to allegaeon aswell!
Allegaeon is great.
Spasm is unbelievably good
Bro, their track War, on their Rare Trax album is probably their most formulaic and heaviest tracks they have in existence. You can actually head bang without trying to figure out time signatures so you can enjoy the song for what it is on the first go around.
Jens is a certified beast, his consistency is insane.
Also, Future Breed Machine, dew it.
Since you liked the vocal performance in this track, you should check out the live version of Pravus. It has one of the best screams I've heard.
This is from their most underrated album I think in Koloss. The other track where they really pull out the groove on this record is ‘Do Not Look Down’ - I’m sure you’d enjoy that one!
Do Not Look Down is so insanely heavy and groovy, I think Drew would like it a lot
Ridiculous groove! Then there’s *that solo*
I'm a musician and the secret to enjoying a Meshuggah song in time is pay attention to the high hat or cymbals, that's your 4/4 time most of the time you'll be able find your grove and actually headband amongst the chaos, lol
Hi Drew, thank you heaps on reading my comment and listening to " Break those bones whose Sinews gave it motion".
I think a very overlooked song from Meshuggah is "Lethargica".
All I'm going to say is that it a trampoline with a violent turn of events as the soft padding around you turns into serrated blade of pure power.
Hope that's enough to convince you. Have a awesome day, lots of love from Australia.
❤️
So Happy to see you getting into Meshuggah! 🔥✨ Very respectful of you to go with the music you enjoy!
For their less popular tracks I’d recommend ”Electric Red” or ”Corridor of Chameleons” next!
🤘🏻🤘🏻 their song I am Colossus has an awesome animated video. Man, seriously. These guys have the same “problem” as Jinjer, no bad songs. I have seen the future, it looks very djenty for you! 😉😅
I showed my dad Meshuggah and he specifically loves this song. He and I were getting lunch and we blasted it when driving. I mean, blasting it so loud that everyone on the streets was looking at us. Every time we’re going in a car together now I’m like, “Hey bro, play Break Those Bones!!” and we see how many people we scare and piss off 😂
Definitely one of the more obscure ones people tend to forget about is Pitch Black. The only way I could describe the feeling it gives off: cold, mechanical and precise. Definitely an interesting listen and a bit of a change from their normal sound.
I would just do Pravus. Most Meshuggah fans are going to like almost all of their songs anyway. That song will blow your mind though. love this channel. It's like showing your buddy all this cool music they've never heard before.
Exactly man, that’s what it’s all about!!
Gotta listen to Meshuggah - The mouth licking what you've bled. It's my favourite meshuggah track! It's from their 3rd album Chaosphere.
Edge of Sanity - Crimson, you will be the first on UA-cam to react to this 40 minute epic
Yes!
Neurotica is a great track by them. It's one of their older songs and it has a really unique, almost upbeat rhythm and sound to it.
Dancers!???!! Anyone?
yeah that's the exact same face when i heard it kick in. fucking epic i only discovered this track and bleed yesterday. why have i never heard of meshuggah until now? this track is why i love playing the drums.
You should check out Car Bomb, it's like Meshuggah and Deftones had a crazy child. I would say start with Gratitude!
YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO ‘DO NOT LOOK DOWN’!! one of their grooviest songs by far, makes me want to break things
Meshuggah needs their own HBO concert special. Simply badass.
Great Stuff 👀
Keep up the good work Brother 👍💥
👏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
New Millenium Cyanide Christ
Yeah but only the live version
Perpetual black second, rational gaze, or obzen, all of them are less popular and honestly I think they are their best work, if you really enjoyed I, then maybe try the catch33 album since it's 1 big song, also fredrik Thordendal (their lead guitar player) made a solo album called sol niger within which is just a masterpiece and it's similar to catch33, Thanks for the amazing content as always and I love these videos keep up the great work!
Meshuggah - Combustion
Whenever people go to the obZen album, they always go Bleed which means they overlook the album opener which is just such an explosive, energetic groove.
It's at the top of my workout mix and makes me feel like punching a dragon in the face like the Hulk.
If you want some absolute craziness, check out the last four songs of their album "catch33" they are technically 4 different songs but they flow into each other really well, and there are returning elements throughout the songs. It's honestly the best thing meshuggah has ever done in my opinion!
It's a pretty cool groove, cus a meshuggah track always hits different when you know exactly when to headbang.
The CHUN-GAH CHUN-GAH in the starting hits on the downbeat for the first 4 beats, and then on the up beat and it keeps alternating and varying in that way. Love this one.
Odd time signiture
Meshuggah: yes
React to Behind The Sun, this will blow your mind!
The best description of Meshuggah I've ever heard is that you can have three different people, all bobbing their heads differently to a Meshuggah song, and all three of them are still correct.
Another great jam is Corridor of Chameleons, highly suggest
Stengah and Perpetual Black Second are great ones. Obzen, Electric Red, By The Ton, Future Breed Machine, Behind the Sun, Marrow, Swarm... I could go on. Goddamn so much legendary stuff from them. This song is quite new and more drone-y.
Next reaction for Meshuggah could be Rational Gaze
IMO, the song ‘Spasm’ from their album Nothing is something I hardly see any requests for and to me is such an underrated deep album track that often gets overlooked! It’s definitely worth the listen alone for being such a brute de force of rhythmic manipulation and intensity, I would love to see Drew react to this hidden gem!
Love the facial expressions you're making. Cus that's exactly what I did when I first listened to this song
I love the different layers they have on the track. So technical.
This song is like waking up in a dark, deserted factory without any idea of how to get out of there and suddenly this huge mechanism starts running and it’s going to kill you if you haven’t figured out an escape plan in time.
This is what awesome sounds like. Great that you gave them a listen.
Follow the hi-hat!
This is what I came to say. Once you find that you are never lost with Meshuggah.
I dont think anyone has done In death is death
dancers to a discordant system is just ridiculous
Just do their whole discography! 🤣
Respect from The UK, 0121!🤘🏼
The way it sounds is the reason why its called "Koloss"!
Love that you’re loving Meshuggah! As others have commented, they predominantly write in 4/4 but their magic is in making it sound all over the place. It may help to listen to Haakes cymbal work he tends to keep a steady 4 on the high hat in most songs. Once I discovered that for myself I could always find the groove! Hope that helps! 😁
If you're a complete madman you'll dare to do catch 33 the entire song/ album in one go...if
Future Breed Machine soon would be great. One of the first modern style breakdowns ever made, iconic track
Meshuggah’s music just comes from somewhere else. Another fucking astral plane. It doesn’t sound like it’s made by humans at all. It’s like the music of aliens or the sound of the universe tearing itself apart in deep space
This is such a monster of a tune, one of my favourites of theirs. Next I would say do either Perpetual Black Second or Dancers To A Discordant System. They comprise the other 2 slots in my top 3 Meshuggah songs along with this one.
"I"! Best meshuggah song, a piece of art.
This Spiteful Snake. The most underrated Meshuggah song ever.
A little cheat code for getting a basic handle on what tempo they're using, Thomas himself said he always adds in something constant to give people something to nod to. Typically its a cymbal or a high hat. In the first verse parts of the song you can hear him always using one of the two to signal pretty much what the tempo is.
The thing you're talking about the elements being off sync with each other is the trademark Meshuggah polyrhythms. Most of their tracks are in simple 4/4 with various accents making it seem off, so that you can headbang to any rhythm you like and won't be wrong. I recommend checking out Bill Burr's Meshuggah praise, he explains it perfectly.
this one sounds like a 1000 ton locomotive train which no one can stop.
Check out Meshuggah Pravus live performance from Tokyo, Jens Kidmans absolute best live performance ever heard ! The raw power/energy and relentless drumming are on another level
The key to catching any meshuggah groove is to just keep bobbing your head. Everything is 4/4 so it comes around eventually. Loong riffs. Lol
"In death is life\in death is death" from the album "Catch 33"
It's all in standard 4/4 with the cymbals in a straight pattern with the snare landing on the 3 of every bar, but the feet are in sync with the guitars and bass which are doing the poly-rhythmic pattern, which is what's probably throwing you off. It's a great song, one of the first that got me into Meshuggah. Love your passion for the low end djent and your reactions say it all! You just got yourself a new sub!
This album (Koloss) is a great introductory album, and has probably the angriest, gnarliest vocals of Jens's career. I highly suggest I am Colossus from this album for the sheer mind-melting factor without it being too fast to follow.
It can be challenging to get the groove of a Meshuggah song. Try to follow the hi-hát, usually thats in 4.
No, it’s easy to get the groove of meshuggah. It’s hard to learn their songs. But just grooving to their shit is so instinctive
There are already some really good suggestions in the comments, but a song that gets overlooked very often is "Swarm". It's an insane (!) groove machine that has made even the biggest Meshuggah haters among my friends nod their head to the beat.
You might not think you hear the rhythm. But your body feels it.
It’s there and you feel it.
Thank you for watching Meshuggah videos. ❤️
Soul Burn has some of the best vocals from Jens and the riffs are sick too.
Mate Meshuggah is THE BAND. Check out Dancers to a discordant system next.
Violent sleep of reason is unbelievable
Meshuggah is just perfect. They give me goosebumps every day
One of their most underrated tracks in my opinion is The Hurt That Finds You First from the Koloss album
One of their best tracks imo, fuckin love it. You should check out "The Demon's Name Is Surveillance" as well. Oh and "Soul Burn"! Jens is a fucking beast. Nice guy too. Met him once, on his birthday actually. He was at his friends place who just happened to live next door to my friend. Both friend groups had decided to have a bbq so we all met outside. Good times.
Animals as Leaders - Tooth and Claw, Nephele, Wave of Babies are all bangers
YOB- Burning the Altar as well
Yes he would like all three of those Animals as Leaders tracks
I will add "Inamorata" by AAL in there aswell! That track has enough horsepower to gallop an advancing army off a cliff. The riffs that introduce themselves half way through that propel the track to its earthquake initiating conclusion chills the goosebumps outta me. I love the groovy heavy stomp of Wave of Babies aswell. Great recommendation!
Spasm is one of my absolute favourites, havent found a original on youtube though. Been a rabbid fan of Meshuggah since 96 or so, whaqt got me hooked instantly was the intro to Humiliative on the None album. Keep em coming :)
You say you can't find any rhythm in it and yet you're moving your head perfectly to the quarter note pulse most of the time. Meshuggah's mission accomplished. :-) For me the most joyous listening experience when listening to Meshuggah is vibing to the quarter note pulse and being surprised every few hits by the interplay between the odd patterns and that quarter note pulse. So imo you don't need to understand the odd patterns that are being played right away, just vibing with the quarter note pulse and getting to know the patterns they play over that more and more with every listen is quite the experience in itself.
'Marrow' and ' I am colossus'
