There is a class action lawsuit on this problem that GM will not acknowledge they won't even attempt to recall this part. Then they try to charge 5k for a camshaft repair

Great video, thank you for the simple and easy to follow instructions! The only thing I disagree with you on is the cause of the failure. The oil screen got clogged so the part got oil starved, overheated from excess friction. That caused the vacuum rotor to shatter. It did exactly what it was supposed to do. Belter that $60 part fail vs destroying the camshaft end and causing a head rebuild or worse, complete engine failure. I don't foresee there being any recalls.
Regular oil changes with high quality oil will reduce/prevent that screen from getting gunked up. Unless it is a design flaw causing the filter to clog, then you might see a TSB.

Yeah I hope this lawsuit goes through for GM All of them are doing the same thing vacuum pumps failing braking camshaft internal engine failure due to broken parts in the engine this is terrible! I just had to do the same thing on mine. Change the vacuum pump exhaust camshaft and also fished out a bunch of pieces of metal out of my oil journals luckily I did get them all. But it sucks having to do this in not even having hundred thousand miles on a car.

Thank you for the instuction video!!! I just bought a used malibu with only 68K and has the same issue. I notice oil underneeth the pump. Kind of wish I bought another ford again or honda/toyoda. I guess these have to be replaced every 50K. WTF, I hate the chevy 2012 chevy sonic I purchased last year uunder 5K for not having an analog collant temp gauge. I will never buy anohter used car with out a temperature dash gagauge. Newer cars are having less vital features. Another missing feaure in many newer cars (NO TRANSMITION DIP STICK) to check the flud level a bolt has to be removed behind the left sterring front side tire and if there is a slow drip with the car running and level it is at the proper level. THANKS GM for making everything difficult... I got 360K out of my ford focus before needing to replace the catalic convertor again then deciding to sell it because of my millage and prior maitenace. Still non the lesss I like the design better. Includes a transmition dip stick and temp gauge... ALL CARS should have this unless its electric....

Hope them metal pieces ain’t get into engine. This happened to me sat night, on i285 in rush hour brake went hard and engine shut off. Mech saying camshaft has metal in it from this and now they talking about replacing engine smh

What year Malibu do you have? You should just get someone to take the timing cover off and do the camshaft. Would be cheaper. An Malibu engine is almost $2000 and most are over that price.

No need to bend the brakes since on this repair, the hydraulic brake system was not opened.

Pathetic what GM has been doing. A measly shear pin design on the pump shaft could at least prevent a 70 dollar part from destroying an entire engine.

As prevent maintenance..replace around 80k miles....it it breaks on the inside (cam side). Its not gonna be nice and Will leave u stranded....tow bills....STRESS FACTOR...
PS...GM says changing oil at 3000 miles will Help this problem.....in my opinion...just a horrible Material and horrible design...they are moving to Electronic Vacuum
