There is a class action lawsuit on this problem that GM will not acknowledge they won't even attempt to recall this part. Then they try to charge 5k for a camshaft repair

So happy i figured this out. Genuinely thought it was a sensor or at worst the booster. Glad its an easy fix. Crazy that there hasnt been anything from Chevy about this. Seems like its enough cars to warrant atleast a bulletin
Great video, thank you for the simple and easy to follow instructions! The only thing I disagree with you on is the cause of the failure. The oil screen got clogged so the part got oil starved, overheated from excess friction. That caused the vacuum rotor to shatter. It did exactly what it was supposed to do. Belter that $60 part fail vs destroying the camshaft end and causing a head rebuild or worse, complete engine failure. I don't foresee there being any recalls. Regular oil changes with high quality oil will reduce/prevent that screen from getting gunked up. Unless it is a design flaw causing the filter to clog, then you might see a TSB.

Great video helped me understand the issue. In our case, the pump seized up and broke the cam. The car went into reduced power mode and the brakes stopped having power. Would not start after shutting it off.
I thank you for this informative video it helped me a lot but I didn’t remove the battery all I did was to loosen up the hose that black hose put it a bit to the side and keep telling myself patience patience loosen the screws by hand. Of course after loosen them with wrench
Try doing a caddilac ats 2.0 l turbo!! Unbelievable !And then hope it doesn't leak after you break it in,they still make them with a steel gasket!!Unreal.

Yeah I hope this lawsuit goes through for GM All of them are doing the same thing vacuum pumps failing braking camshaft internal engine failure due to broken parts in the engine this is terrible! I just had to do the same thing on mine. Change the vacuum pump exhaust camshaft and also fished out a bunch of pieces of metal out of my oil journals luckily I did get them all. But it sucks having to do this in not even having hundred thousand miles on a car.

Mine broke the other day but oil dumped out of the side of the engine right under the pump when it happened. Thankfully it happened in town. We made it home with the hard brake pedal but all the engine oil was drained. Hopefully it’s just the pump that broke.

@@kjstarr2893 I got mine from a gm dealer , just Google and call around, just a tech tip make sure you get the one with out the screen filter in it , that's what's causing them to lock up and break because it blocks the oil passage
Just finished doing mine a couple hours ago. Try spining the side with the notches and reseating. If you stick your finger inside the engjne you should feel a rectangular hole, the two notches go inside of that. Good luck!

I have a p0556 on 2016 Buick encore. Close to same engine. I changed sensor and check hose everything looked good. Cel came back. Took it to mechanic they charged me to do the exact same thing. Still getting p0556 The brakes seem to work fine. No hard pedal. Any other ideas? Guess I could take the pump off just to open it up and check it? And put it back on if it's good ...
Any idea if I have all the symptoms you have said (I'm almost positive that's the issue) but when I put my finger on where the hose goes I can still feel suction?

I guess these have to be replaced every 50K. WTF, I hate the chevy 2012 chevy sonic I purchased last year uunder 5K for not having an analog collant temp gauge. I will never buy anohter used car with out a temperature dash gagauge. Newer cars are having less vital features. Another missing feaure in many newer cars (NO TRANSMITION DIP STICK) to check the flud level a bolt has to be removed behind the left sterring front side tire and if there is a slow drip with the car running and level it is at the proper level. THANKS GM for making everything difficult... I got 360K out of my ford focus before needing to replace the catalic convertor again then deciding to sell it because of my millage and prior maitenace. Still non the lesss I like the design better. Includes a transmition dip stick and temp gauge... ALL CARS should have this unless its electric....

Soooo this happened to my son car he has a 2018 now the car won’t turn over I’m hoping it’s a Saftey stop, but the pedal is very hard and won’t stop the car on time, there was a recall (18279) something to do with rear brakes or something but I think GM dropped the ball because no way this should happen in a 2018 car that was bought new…

What year Malibu do you have? You should just get someone to take the timing cover off and do the camshaft. Would be cheaper. An Malibu engine is almost $2000 and most are over that price.

As prevent maintenance..replace around 80k miles....it it breaks on the inside (cam side). Its not gonna be nice and Will leave u stranded....tow bills....STRESS FACTOR... PS...GM says changing oil at 3000 miles will Help this problem.....in my opinion...just a horrible Material and horrible design...they are moving to Electronic Vacuum

Great video all info is perfect. Align the drive dogs on the cam before tightening bolts would be my only suggestion.

One of the mounting bolts has a sleeve. Where does it go? I'm replacing my vacuum pump and it's leaking oil like crazy.
How did any of you guys get the broken pieces out that’s sitting in the engine without taking the cover of the engine apart?
Mine broke the other day but oil dumped out of the side of the engine right under the pump when it happened. Thankfully it happened in town. We made it home with the hard brake pedal but all the engine oil was drained. Hopefully it’s just the pump that broke.

Thanks took the vacuum pump back off and had a bad camshaft seal (torn) getting new seal for it but I alined it so it should work

You can do this job in 20 minutes… no need to remove the battery I actually just got done doing this same job earlier…

From what I can see they recalled only the 2014
So when taking the intake tube off there's a bolt on that braket what size socket do I use for that bolt?

Yes the vacuum pump is connected to the cam shaft so once the engine is turning it is turning too

Your cam shaft is damage
Probably the camshaft relucter is turned off it’s set point. Need a new camshaft or just turn the relucter to the correct set point but it’s risky

Yes it's easier to get to the filter from the top
if you move the canister at the top with the 2 10mm bolts it makes it a little easier.

Instead of a hard petal if it’s a soft pedal and the master cylinder has went bad twice recently can it still be a vacuum pump!

Stick your finger in there, you'll feel the notch in the cam, line that up

No need to bend the brakes since on this repair, the hydraulic brake system was not opened.
