Shift to park - solved - Chevy Malibu 2018

- When I parked my car I received the "Shift to park" message. This is a common problem with Chevy Malibu. Unfortunately I didn't record the process but I'm able to explain how to fix it in this video. It's a simple fix with 1 tool needed.
GM should be recalling all these shift to park issues.
Agree so much! Cheap parts that cause significant issues....
Exactly
It’s literally every Malibu. I’ve had it actually fixed under warrenty and it’s happened again. Gm just doesn’t make good products anymore.
I had mine fixed in 2020 when I bought my 17 and I had it fixed twice under warranty. Now 2023 it’s happening again and it’s literally not allowing me to shut my car off now
Can we sue them , this is insane my car only on 40k miles🤦♂️
It sure did work. I took it to Chevy yesterday and they gave me an estimate for 400$ to fix it. I am glad I came across your video. Thanks for sharing
$400? I got an estimate for nearly $600 for the same issue
Did this fix last?
Wow! I just set up the appointment and I'm set to take it in on the 7th of September. I'm not spending that much money for a simple fix. I'll do it myself and cancel the appointment!
My daughter started having this issue with her 2018 w/30k miles. She was thinking of going to dealer...i saw this video and suggested she could save $500+ and showed her this video. We just got done doing the repair per the video and after 15 mins of careful work she is very happy. Thanks for posting this!
Follow up: her car was acting up again this week. She came home tonight and asked me to pull up this video again…5 minutes of work and we did the fix again.
Follow up #2: my daughter had issue happen again yesterday and tried dealing with it herself…respected her for that. Unfortunately part of the shift mechanism apparently broke. So she took the car in to local repair shop and they fixed it. Seems the clip part this video focuses on has been redesigned per a service bulletin. Hopefully she will not experience this shift/park issue again!
@@jeffd5196 how much did she pay?
@@RuthYamin She believes it was under $200.00. By the way, the repair shop she took it to for this fix was NOT dealership but trusted Tuffy shop.
@@jeffd5196 perdón pero que es lo que hay que hacer cambiar ese sensor o darle presión a la laminita
I did it on my car, it took me around 15 minutes only to get it done, thank you
THANK YOU SO MUCH! The person that has NO IDEA about cars, fixed my car on my own!! Thank you ! 🙏🏼❤️
Thank you!!! This was driving me nuts for a month. I'm just out of warranty so of course this stupid indicator breaks and makes my car honk 4 times when I get out. Thank you so much. This worked like a charm.
Did this also cause a check engine light for you?
Amazing video! I just got off the phone with my local Chevy dealer and they estimated the repair to be over 500 and my car would sit at the shop for over a week before they could even look at the car. I bought the car brand new back in 2018 and I have 22k miles on it. I just started having this issue a few months back and they advised me to contact GM. 5 phone calls, 3 emails and two letters later and all I got from that was absolutely nothing.
There is a lawsuit for the shift to park sensor currently, it was filed in August of 2021 but GM is fighting it still and there is no indication if this will be fixed any time soon. All GM told me was that I could get a lawyer and add my case to the lawsuit and see if once it’s resolved I MAY get it fixed. This will save me a LOT of time and money because there is no way I’m going to pay for a lawyer and also pay for the repairs and ALSO submit all the receipts and invoices when it’s a fault on GMs side.
Again thank you very much for this video, 20 mins later and one broken nail but my car works like a dream and I don’t have to deal with the headache that is GM customer service 😊
Sofia pero tuviste que comprar el sensor o es solo darle precio a la laminita
You saved LIVES GOOD SIR! Wife’s car was doing this for weeks. Thank you!
Thank you Thank you Thank you as a retired senior on a fixed income you've saved me a $ 175.00 which I could not afford.. Got my neighbor watch your post & fixed it for me... Again thank you....
My 2018 Malibu just started doing this recently. I will definitely be trying this to see if it will fix it before spending hundreds at the dealership! Thanks for the video!😊
I have the same issue, but Chevrolet sent me a letter awhile back saying they know of the issue, and to present the letter if the problem arises,so I won't be charged. But thanks for the video, it shows what the problem actually is.
REPAIR NOT A BYPASS!
PROBLEM:
From my searches about the same problem, I believe I have discovered the real issue going on here. The switch itself is well made internally, the travel on the spring tab of the switch surpasses needs to activate and the activator rod of the shift lever also surpasses necessary travel limits. I manually triggered the switch dozens of times and in slow motion and quickly, same result, it worked fine. I reinstalled the switch and shift handle on the removed shift mechanism trying again to find a failure point. AH-HA moment arrived, the spring tab is where the problem lies but you have to look at the other end where it attaches to the switch. When installed and everything is in it's normal position, the spring tab is 'pivoting' the pressure to the rear of the switch causing the tab to pull slightly out of it's socket.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
With the switch removed, gently pull down on the spring tab at the rear of the switch, it will easily slip right out. The manufacturer relies on simple friction to retain the spring tab. You can see there are only 'pressure' type retaining tabs on the metal end that fits in the switch 'socket'. For the FIX to this, using a end cutter or a side cutter, make the factory tabs 'loose' on the end farthest away from the inserted end so they can 'dig in' to help retain the spring tab. Next, make two 'nips' on the very end of the inserted end so that you have three sections to that end. Be careful not to cut through it or expand it too wide while doing this. Next, reinsert the spring tab (it will e a tight fit, the tighter, the better) back into the switch housing. Make certain that you are inserted all the way to the indexing tabs. Reinstall the switch in the shift mechanism, making sure the activating lever is below the spring tab and test to make sure the activating lever and spring tab allow the switch to move it's full range. If it isn't able to make full range, just bend the spring tab accordingly. No more problems!

Thanks so much . Just called my dealership this morning about having this issue . Gonna try this before taking it in !
Saved me a lot of money. Thank you, fixed my son's car
This is the second time I needed your video. I guess I didn't push it down far enough last time. Thanks again!
Thanks for the video my wife’s car just started doing this and couldn’t figure out how to get it fixed going to work on it tomorrow thanks again for the helpful video
How did it go ?
Thanks for the video. My 2017 Malibu started doing this a few weeks ago and when I saw this I decided to try it and it seems to have solved the problem, but we will see how long it will last. So thanks again for showing it to us,
For those wondering if this is a permanent fix: It can hardly be a very permanent fix since it only lasted from manufacture to present (mine has 50,000 miles) so I would assume that by the next 50,000 (very possibly sooner) miles I will likely have to do it again. And I'm ok with that
@Rebecca Payne will that should didn't last long but I discovered that all I need to do is hit the button on the front side of shifter a couple times and it disappears so at this point that is how I deal with it.
Thanks a lot man!! I have not idea how did you figure that one out, but it worked. Genius!
I just hacked my own parking problem - LIKE A BOSS!!! Thanks for the pointers 😊
Hey man I just did exactly what you said and it worked. There was a black protector I had to pry off but great video. Thanks for sharing. Saved me money. Literally took 2 mins of that.
I got the console off by just prying a flathead around the edge in a couple places to loosen it then just basically pulling on it. there was a black metal piece in front of the lever that I basically just pulled back far enough to get the screwdriver in to push the lever. thank you for this video!!!!
To get the “fix” to work, I had to put a flat bladed screwdriver under the metal lever by the switch and use needle nose pliers to bend the end of the lever down. This puts more of a bend in the lever and results in a much more positive click when you let go of the trigger.
I followed your advice on this. So far it is working...hope it lasts
For others to know make sure to take out the phone holder first to make it much easier to pivot. There is a guard over the contact that will need removed by levering back the tabs with a small flat head. Be careful to not push too hard cause it will go flying if you arnt careful.
Could you go into more detail on taking the phone holder out?
I'm terrible at fix it jobs and break everything, but my mechanic was out of pocket for a week. I actually fixed this! Thanks bro!
Mine does it every once in a while. It's a dirty switch or something. All you have to do is just push and release the "trigger" on the shifter when it's in park and the message clears. You kinda let it snap on release...pull it in and just let go...snap. Works every time so far.
This worked for me! Thank you
i think i’ll try this before i gut my gearshift area lmao
Worked like a charm! Thank you so much.
Bro thank you for this video. Easy to follow and solved my problem! You’re the man!!
Super helpful, took me like 5 mins tops with fix this after watching the video!🎉
Working for my car so far, thanks for the video!
I just bought a 2016 malibu and it is doing this exact same thing. I will be doing this, this weekend. Thank you so much! Unfortunately my warrenty doesnt cover this.
My 2018 just started doing this. THANK YOU
My 2018 just started it as well. I currently have 45k miles on it and at times it takes me 3-5 minutes to make it stop showing the error. I set up an appointment at the dealership, but if I can save myself some money, I'll just fix it myself!
Thank you for your excellent video. I would not have known how to get the console open. Whole fix took 10 minutes. Now it is a question of how long it will last.
Hello sir.. is the reform still working well so far? Thank you
It worked. Thanks for the video. Saved me time and money.
Awesome man, thanks, perfect video.
dealing with this makes me not want to own a chevy anymore
It's not really a big deal. Easy fix.
Much better than having a shitty transmission ready to blow like a ticking bomb. This is nothing but a simple fix.
I really want to thank you for your help this stuff really work thank you ☺️
It really works! Thanks a lot man, saved an appointment 😊
Thanks you so much. You really saved me $300+. Thank you for taking your time to record and post it. By the way fixed my wife’s 2017 malibu. So I am thinking it works on 2016-present Malibu’s
Thanks Bro it's 2022 and this video is still relevant. 💪
2023 video still holding strong 💪🏽
Thanks so much! Very helpful.
Thank you for the video! Saved me $375 from the dealer. Had a good feeling it would not be worth it.
Thanks so much you saved me a lot of money
If that micro switch goes bad, and it will try this. Jumper (short) the blue and black wires for the micro switch. The shifter in park is looking for a short across the point of those 2 wires connected to it. There is no voltage but verify. You won’t have any more trouble with “Shift to Park” once you connect those two wires (black & blue) of the micro switch.
Thanks , it did worked!!!
Omg, it actually worked. Thank you! So annoying for so long
Really helpful video, I have been dealing with this issue for months!! You are a life saver! 🙏🏼
EPIC MAN u a lie
slimylinda 😳
Awesome easy fix thank you sir!
I ‘ m thinking going to dearler, but I remember watch video first, and do it.It’s true working good I very happy and save too much money.Thank you very much your videos
I'm dealing with this with my 2018 for the second time got repaired under now it's back like a bad habit so wish me luck trying it your way today
Same on 2018 Chevy Traverse. Thank you.
Thanks! Worked great on my 2017 Malibu!!
It's been 9 months... did the fix last?
@@sophiaisabelramirez1139 so far so good!!
Thanks! I just bought my used 2018 Acadia, great car, but this just started to show up. Hopefully a quick, simple fix.
Worked for me. Thank you. 🙂
Hey maaann i dont know what to say , i tried your way it did work and im so so happy right now , thank you so so much ❤god bless you
The little metal piece that needs to be bent back into place looks awfully flimsy. What are the chances of breakage? If it breaks then it’s a bigger issue than before. I have a 18 Malibu with 61,000 miles on it. It just started this recently.
Thanks tho I’m really happy this worked and that you figured it out I didn’t wanna go pay a bunch for a stupid fix either
Knew it was some sort of micro switch issue
Thanks for the info 😁
your doing God's work 💯....thank you
Wish I saw this before taking it to the dealership. Ended up paying $700! Anyone who’s dealing with this! Please follow this guys video
Wow really? Not under warranty? I’m about to take it to get it fixed tomorrow
@@Authenticfitness33 how did it go? Yeah my warranty had expired. It isn’t a long warranty for this part, my car is just below 40,000km, and I owned it for about 2-3 years when this had happened. If you have to pay, I’d say follow this guys video because $700 for a simple fix is not worth it. If they will change it under warranty then obviously have the dealership change it. But otherwise don’t waste your hard earned cash! Also make sure they change the entire shift assembly and not apply their common temporary fix of adding a harness within the current shifter assembly. It’ll just delay the problem to another day in the future at which point your warranty may expire
You don’t even need to do this. All you have to do is hold the button and then let it go, it’ll fix the issue every time. Hasnt failed once for me
I tried this but my 18 malibu has a plastic cap over the park setting. Did you remove the plastic cap. Everything looks the same as yours but the plastic cap. I tried to bend it but im still having same issues.
The switch is electrical not mechanical. So while this fix probably works, it's not for the reason you might think - the error is caused by "build-up of material on the contacts of the Park switch" aka it got dirty because Chevy didn't build it to be tightly sealed. So getting in there and pushing the switch around is essentially cleaning it, allowing the correct resistance to be registered by the BCM. I recommend gently cleaning the contact points with a thin alcohol wipe and DO NOT LOSE THAT BLACK COVER otherwise the problem will return faster!
Thank you! While I'm in there I'll be doing this!!
Amazing thank you so very much!!
I did this and it worked for a few days. Then the problem occurred again. Repeated the repair by putting a little more bend in the aluminum lever. Also sprayed a bit of electrical contact solution. Hopefully this works and I can avoid the dreaded dealership
thank you. worked for us.
Thank You My Friend I Needed to know this so I can fix it myself ♥️ Stay Safe ♥️🙌♥️ #Yarissquad
It just worked thankyouuuuuu
I ended up taking my car to the dealership I would like to know how much of the people paid to get it fixed
I just cut the wires from the switch .stripped the wires back about a half inch and twist the bare wires together and cover them with electrical tape. Problem solved forever.
Does this cause any other problems, like does it think it's in park while you are driving? Please let me know. Thanks.
@@stevero77 it doesn't cause any problems.
@@SawmillerSmith Thanks for that. It sounds like it is a safety feature to prevent people from not putting it into park when car is not running, just like an old fashioned car. I like simple fixes so this makes sense.
My car JUST started doing this!!
What a legend bc I’m getting tired of flicking my damn shift and hearing that beeping noise
My 2018 Chevy Camaro just started doing the same thing. After warranty expired. It says shift to park even though it's in park.
THANK YOU!
BTW- My car is always clean. I just had to dump all the trash and receipts from the middle compartment to move the middle part. 🙈
Dude don't worry about that. There's no problem there, and if anyone says anything so what!
Well this trick didn't work on the damn car for me. I thought when I brought it in and they fixed it, it was good. Nope. Now I'm really contemplating on selling this car back to carmax
Thank you!!!
Does this fix it long-term or does it eventually get back to that message? Just bought a used 2021 Malibu yesterday and discovered this problem after I took it home..
Have you had any issues since?
Clutch! Thank you!
If this fix doesn't work for you and you cannot get your Volt to turn off, a new connector and wring harness are free as well the install at your nearest Chevy dealer (reference GM Service Bulletin 19-NA-206, dated February 2020). Let me stress that if you cannot get your car to turn off (Chevy Blazer, Malibu, Traverse, Volt, GMC Acadia), you 12 volt battery will run low and be killed if you don't get it to a dealer ASAP. The dealer will not give you a free battery ($200) plus battery test socked me for $234. So if you cannot get it to a dealer, disconnect the 12 volt battery in order to save it. If you get it to a dealer, disconnect the battery when you get there and alert the service department that you did so. GM will reimburse them for the installation of the harness and shifter, not the battery. That's on you. Just figure I'd give you a heads up.
THANK YOU!!!🌟🌟🌟
This fix didn’t work for mine. It’s sitting dead waiting for the shifter replacement to come in.
We lost the little black cover while doing this do you happen to know the name of the part or where to buy one? Thank you so much!
Tia Perea Not sure, I lost mine too. Never put it back on but it's been fine without it.
Thank You!
Worked for me too!
have u had anymore issues after this?
Thanks!!!
When I opened mine recently, theres a cover on the area where the metal is. Any suggestions?
I just popped it open. And put it back once I was finished.
Awesome yes they need to recall on this issue I just bought one 2019 for work an this crap starting to happen smh 🤦♂️but thank you so much bro you rock 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Is this a temporary or permanent fix? Has the problem came back at all after doing this?
Selina I had to do it again a few weeks after but it hasn't done it since. So can't guarantee it won't do it again.
What is plus minus button on top of gear stick.
My Chevy Malibu is a 2022. And just started having this problem. Any solutions?
Is there a recall for these problem?
Is this a permanent fix?
Is there a recall yet?
how far should i bend it should i make bend in the metal piece
GM needs to recall this
Will this work on an 18 Impala?
Can someone make a video showing how to get that console up?
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Great same here will let you know
Got to try it on my girls car. Dealership wants to charge $280 to fix and order a part...
Buying a Chevy was THE biggest mistake I've made in life. This car is nothing but a lemon. So many issues. First the broken piston, oil pans issues, sensor issues and now this. Fuck this, I'm never buying from them again.
I opened it up but I didn’t see the silver piece you pushed down
That is some hokey designed shit. Have this issue on my 17' with 86k miles on day one After getting it home from dealer. Supposedly a 1k miles 30 day warranty so I hope I can get them to fix it more solidly than just bending some metal and hoping that stays. Btw, once you bend metal you weaken it. If this keeps resorting back and you do it a handful of times I would guess it would break. 10 cars, never heard or seen anything as dumb as this....
Happened to my wife and myselkf today. Just brought our 2019 chevy impala LT home yesterday, all was good. Today, we go and try to shift into park in our driveway and nothing. When it started the instrument panel she said was even slightly dim for a second then went to normal. Just our luck. Thankfully we have a decent warranty and they better honor it. Now my question is im disabkled and its probably gonna need to be towed to the delership. How in the hell will it be able to get on the back of a flatbed or whatever without being dragged cuz it wont shift. Murphys law.
