That's where you're wrong - Aphex Twin recently revealed in an interview that this track, and several others scattered throughout his career, were actually composed by Portsmouth goalkeeper David James.
Damm, another RDJ track that kicks like hell!! I love the contrast between the GX1 arpeggio / patterns and the pad sound in the background. Richard has such a rich musical capability, he can create Ambient, Acid, DnB, Techno or a Piano track, but you can always "see" his handwriting. This man will have his place in the Musical History.
1. RDJ plays Tuss songs live at times 2. RDJ owns one of the few GX1's around 3. RDJ is the only thing capable 4. Nobody else is the Tuss 5. The Tuss comes from Warped
this comment was made two years after the release, way before anyone would ask themselves if the tuss was aphex twin. this is some good proof for the time.
+cchujnickSpam2 What if this comment reacting to your comment is actually your comment and the comment you wrote is mine? What if we are all voxels vibrating in the 12th dimension beyond space and time? What if Chris Langan is actually Deepak Chopra? What if all this is nonsense and this tune is epic and brilliant?
The Tregaskins are my neighbors. Karin is a good sister, wife and friend. And she really is 1337 in acid and electronics. Sometimes we drop acid parties with their cousin Richard. It became rare in the last years tho. The Tregaskins are currently working on an EP that will be released on 23.12.
It’s a Yamaha DX-1. Literally one of the rarest analog, 18-voice poly synth ever made. It’s basically an organ, with three rows of keys. $60,000. Stevie Wonder had one, and a few other musicians (there was 200 made)
Rich probably set up a bunch of microphones to record this old GX1 fucker. Listen how the dust from within the machine kicks in occasionally during the session. 03:44 is a good spot to hear it. 04:11 too.
I'm actually happy I'm only hearing this today and not 15 years ago, I don't think I would have been able to understand all the subtlilty ans the sound of the GX1 back in the time so it makes it even more special to me now!
Oh my sweet lord, listen to the voltage spewing through that GX1. I would give my left testicle to own a GX1. Of course, if it was Richard's GX1 I would respectfully decline. I could never imagine using a piece of hardware that RDJ has already mastered. It would be like getting sloppy seconds after John Holmes, how do you compete with that? :)
This definitely sounds like Afx to me, whatever you think abt the beat - which btw does mix up quite a bit. I like the way RDJ still tries to keep us guessing.
to me it sounds like he got the cutoff of the gx1's filter modulated in real time by a sample+hold waveform synced to the drum machine's (or master sequencer, whatever) clock, waltzy syncopation and all, but what's wild is i don't even understand how that's possible with the gx1, when to my understanding it's a completely preset synth that utilizes patch cartridges that are impossible to edit without modding the hardware. but i certainly wouldn't put it past richard
there is a sequencer on the gx1!! I haven't read about it anywhere else so now you know . And you can actually change the parameters really easily while the cartridges are plugged in! Just stick up a list of all the parameters against numbers by your gx1 Then just adjust each one as required with a screwdriver. If you select patch 10 on each of the synths then the cartridges at the front can be reached easily ,after awhile you learn the numbers easily like pwm is number 14 etc Then you are programming the presets directly and do not need the tone board or the programmer, decent. You can feed any of the drum instruments to trigger the solo synth! E.g every time the kick drum sounds or the Hihat etc the solo synth can be triggered which actually gives you untold pattern possibilities if you combine the drum pattern selectors. Then you can either manually play the key you want with it being triggered in sync. Or just let it trigger automatically. Also the same drum instrument pattern is fed into a s/h which in turn can randomly select the pitch of the solo synth and the cut off frequency of both filters, with varying amounts ,sliders for each. Instant acid and from the 70`s!
I got the sheep album on disk, searched for the Alspacka EP but gave up eventually, long live YT for second hand sounds :) Tuss sure makes excellent music, i dont care who does, good music is just that... But, and i do sound like a fanboy now, this SONG is a rdj collaboration at max.
The Tuss is a transmuted signal looped back to us through the The Triangulum Emission Garren Nebula originating form the uneasy howls of a greek when forced to drink his poison hemlock somwhere around 400 BC
anyone else notice that a lot of the synth sounds on aphex records sound like they were recorded by a mic rather than the synth being directly hooked up to a computer?
The Tuss is actually The Goalkeep for the USA team at the 1994 World Cup. he also used to be the bass player in shakatak. And if you dont believe me, then thats up to you.
I spent a good minute trying to figure out what rhythmically occured in the first 10 seconds. But it seems to just be a syncopated 6:8 with the second half changed the second time it's played. strange
This shit is tight. I wonder if it was really done with a GX1. That slide of notes at the end suggests that it may have been, since they have a ribbon controller.
A friend of his I was emailing said he is very lazy and is slow to get things done. I mean, he can almost print money with anything he releases; ie AFX ep2, so its like a brand. We love this Tuss stuff from him- a great release.
In theory, for a time signature x/y, the y just indicates the value of the notes in a score, so whether it's 3/4 or 6/8 isn't really known unless the composer actually notated the music traditionally. Usually though people speak of 6/8 to mean the sort of groove heard in this song, and 3/4 for waltzes.

Hmmm I could be way off, but maybe The Tuss is Drexciya's name on the rephlex label. Of course this is just more speculation as usual, but I've been getting subtle hints that this might be true. For instance Drexciya made an album called "Red Hills of Lardossa" and the youtube account that claims to be Brian Tregaskin is known as "Lardossa" Again this is just a guess, but I thought I should mention it. but its a solo! he's just looped that beat so he can solo on the gx1! i agree about the beat being "boring". i highly doubt he would ever release this track on a full length album and especially not under the aphex moniker but still believe its him soloing
I disagree with your first statement. But, if it were the worst, it is only because Tuss' other tracks are too damn magnificent! You're right about Alspacka though! ;)
Judging by your video, I guess you think it's Richard D. James also. If it isn't though, Brian Tregaskin is loving all the free press he's getting. lol Whoever it is, it would be nice if they came out of hiding and helped change what mainstream music has become. AFX owns a GX1 and this song is a GX1 solo, possibly could be aphex twin or "The Tuss" could use the GX1 as they are on the same record lable and the GX1 could b in the studio! or AFX said thay could use it for there songs, we will never no! unless RDJ tells us lol, which wont happen! or will it!
it all depends on the synth and what not alot of casios are super cheap and then all you need is a bunch of pedals and you can find crazy cheap pedals all over or just use the feedback of pedals

RDJ has said in interviews that Syro was basically inspired by Kanye, and that Kim Kardashian is actually Karen Tregaskin

The gx1 is a very strange beast indeed. Filter controled by a S/H circuit controlled by the hi-hat on the built in drum machine.
Now that you pointed it out, I can hear it.. hypnotically funky.

PART of the Tuss. The Tuss is Karen Tregaskin, Patrick Tregaskin, Richard D. James.
I keep coming back to this!
@4:45
if you mapped APHEX as a pitch scale with A being a low pitch, and X as a high pitch, the end spells out APHEX :)
Rephlex's co-founder, Grant Wilson-Claridge, stated in an e-mail interview that the Tuss is not Richard D. James.
Well, it's a polysynth and there's a lot of fuckery you can do with those.

No, there's just reverb on most of it in the very beginning, the stuff from the GX-1 is certainly a line recording.
definitely line recording, it's just part of his genius
e.g the reverb and EQ-ing on 'Death Fuck', similar effect except on stereoids.

Richard was born in Ireland, but he grew up in Cornwall England.
"The Tuss" is Cornish slang also btw.
This was actually made by a famous member of an old famous band, not Aphex. His name is Paul McShartny..
