What a band, pack loaded with very different individual talents. Elliot Easton is the sneaky surprise package. He gives My Best Friends Girl a Country Music undertone. He has to easily be in a top 5 list of great lead guitarists from this era of music. Bye Bye Love is almost DEVO esc in sections.

My favorite era for this talented crew from the States. Their inaugural album The Cars will go down as one of thee greatest albums of ALL time. Period. Remember the date people...the end of the '70s and the music biz was looking for new directions...so of course up popped The Cars and their new genre...that totally freaked out music lovers all over the entire planet - and even over here in New Zealand where I'm from. I'd NEVER heard anything like The Cars before. I was in to Van Halen with a decent hunk of Meatloaf on the side - and I turned 15 in '78. So when Ric Ocasek came on to the stage with his Jet Pilot aviation sunglasses, pencil thin physique, all leather jacket & pants with black boots, and the coolest hair style in the music biz, well it was always going to be game OVER for other contenders. And then Benn Orr - the blonde surfie-model...what a recipe for utter success. The Cars sound during this era '78-'80 totally blew the music industry critiques minds, not to mention audiences and the good folk like me who bought their albums.

The Cars were in heavy rotation, especially the Shake It Up album that should’ve been named “Cruiser”. Heartbeat City became the first new Cars record I bought at 15 years young. That had a big wow factor. I had the thrill of discovering “Panorama” as the only one that I didn’t even know about! I’m so glad for UA-cam giving me The Cars from the start.

Greg Hawkes looks like the nerd who gets 100% on every test he takes in school but he can play keyboards like no one I've ever heard. The different sounds he gets for each song the Cars play is remarkable. When I first heard It's All I Can Do his keyboard is what made me a fan of the Cars. Then when I heard I've Got A Lot On My Head his keyboard got me hooked.

Benjamin Orr was cool as cool could be, yet humble & just "a person" when being interviewed. I would loved to have met him. I'm sure he'd have been a really fun guy to know. I see him smile often in videos, which tells me a lot about a person, right there. He had thee cutest crooked smile. I think maybe he had a couple of nervous ticks that he did with his mouth, (observed during interviews), but they were actually cutely attractive, & possibly may have contributed to some of his intonations & the way he pronounced/sang the song's words so uniquely. Love it all. I was an upper-classman when The Cars became really popular. I got one look at/listen to Benjamin Orr & I was hooked. My fav Cars songs are the ones that he sings lead on, although I like them all.
Watching him perform...has black leather EVER looked much better? He was def quite studly.😏
I was fortunate to get to see The Cars in concert in 1980. What a great performer, musician, singer, apparently a great person all around...& what a great band.

The Cars sound just as good live, if not better, than when listening to the album version of their music. Most bands when you see them in concert it barely sounds like what you're so used to hearing. But not with The Cars. Absolute league of their own and never to be replaced or duplicated. Their music was the playlist of my life in the late 70s and 80s. Still can't believe Ben and Ric are gone. Just seems too mind boggling. So thankful I got to see them a few times back in the 80s before they sadly split up. And they would open the show with "Hello..... Hello Again." I can see and hear it now. RIP Ben & Ric. 🕊🎸🎹🌹🙏
