Good for Lady Somerset! Gave her wealth to good works! So what if all the unearned wealth goes back to the common hands that built it?

Super interesting history. Side note: I love the name Imogen 🙂

I guess the new heiress didn't learn a single thing from her relative Lady Somerset. 'It's too expensive supporting battered women, so I'll just maintain this ridiculous castle instead.'

well you could step up and sell your home, kids, wife/husband and all your assets to fill in that gap you think she vacated.. betcha you wont though

Just like most people you seem to be free spending other people's money or are you just a politician?

@@bmedlin00 Large estates made their money off taxes and rents. They were responsible for their people. If you are a working-class person, paying taxes is how you pay your part of the dues.

@@bigbulk688 I don't disagree, but in that vein it should be entirely acceptable for this lady to pay her taxes as well. If I am understanding m jagusch s/he seems to be suggesting that she sell off her rightful inheritance to care for battered women. If the lady chooses to do so, well then fine for her, but to suggest that she should just seems absurd to me.

I had the same thought. In a lot of ways she meant well, but took it upon herself to impose her beliefs on others and gave no thought, it would seem, to the generations of her own family to come.
