    Greetings from California from your Montagu cousin. Being an American, I had to Google an Aga stove. I imagine having a stove that's always on is a real plus in England where the weather is so much colder. I could've used one in Bavaria where I lived while in the Army Medical Corps. I looked at new Aga's and I nearly had a stroke! The price is nearly as much as an economy automobile in this States. You've got a real treasure in your lovely kitchen 💖

      Coastal California, at least middle and north, are great for Agas also. I loved the one I had in the house I built there. Unfortunately I decided I needed to buy a farm in coastal Oregon, so someone else is enjoying that Aga now...

    Whew, what an intro! I started watching the pool cleaning video, because I just happened to catch a glimpse on UA-cam, and it was such an interesting story, culminating in bottles of beer and cider, that I immediately made a beeline for your first episode, which I've just watched. There are so many highlights, but I'll just mention those letters kept by a former countess. They must be so fascinating to read. Then there was a brief shot of the Earl perusing a very old book in what appeared to be the library. It would take months to read through just that one from start to finish. Luke asked what we would like to see and there's no limit of topics you could cover, but the one thing that rang a bell with me, as a foodie, was the mention of the cafe and its (then) impending reopening. As I am always thinking of my next meal, let us look around the cafe when it opens and see what the menu will have on it! Good luck with your enormous challenge and I shall now start watching the other episodes so far.

    Julie the warm air rises in every house so the best place to dry washing is up near the ceiling. I have a 'pulley' like that in my utility room in my 1980's built house even tho the ceilings are a lot lower, and it's amazing - not only does it keep everything up off the floor (unlike a standing airer) but things dry so fast I never need to use a tumble drier so it saves a lot of money!
    It's kind of funny to see you and Luke hanging out in what used to be the 'servant's quarters' of the house - changed days indeed!
    Btw the difference between the gong and the bell system is that the bell system was used by the family of the house to summon a servant to their rooms whereas the gong was used by the servants to let the family know meals were ready and to come to the dining room.

    • @d.annejohnson5631
      @d.annejohnson5631 5 місяців тому

      Yes indeed. That is especially true if the ceilings are high. I have had a dry rack for clothes hangers or draping damp sheets in a high ceilinged kitchen that was warm because of an Aga, or in reasonably high ceiling in a basement utility room warmed by nearby house furnice and hot water heater. Shaking out then smoothing cotton percale sheets hanging over a high pole means very little ironing....

    • @sallyannc3176
      @sallyannc3176 5 місяців тому

      @@d.annejohnson5631 it actually doesn't matter the height of the ceiling - whatever the warmth of the room the maximum warmth is always up at the top.

      @@sallyannc3176 Of course Sally...but as I loved being able to put danp things on hangers, and large sheets lengthwise draped over a pole...it was nice to be able move under things! Sheets are ever so much nice laundered this way....drier heat kills them..and even if you have someone who will touch them up with an iron they are freshers and crisper hung up damp.
      I love my washing machine,,,,but avoid drier...

    I'm so glad I found this channel. Have you ever thought of putting those letters into a book? Lots of historical buffs would enjoy reading the letters of a member of English Aristocracy. If you need work done, could you get University students that would work there to get credits. I think there was a place in Italy doing that, they would get students to come and stay in exchange for doing work and learning a skill specific to a point in time. I would find that fascinating and would do that for a holiday if I wasn't sick. I look forward to more videos, you both are very charming people.

      Dear Jonathan, Hope you feel supported. Hope you feel a shift.Your reminder has been timely. Not the dating advice...
      The sync of your Memorial week to Connor. During this time, I heartily relocated to NY from California. My Dad is in a hospital bed, dozing, but hearing a special program on Powerful by Faith. Even if he doesn't focus, subliminally he is aware of flowers,
      Moms pic in gala days, and a working voice of the speaker, who he knows, and worked with years ago. Bottom line,
      He feels supported. I wish the same sensation for you.
      Have Faith in God's love. It's eternal. Nothing comes from nothing. Connor left his spot vacant,and it will be filled again, not by a replacement. By the living breathing health restored unique young man. God's creation.
      All vestiges of this bizarre imperfect world will be wiped away.
      Our Loving Father, perfect memory,goes beyond beyond.
      No expiration date on his love, or power to restore his Creation, all in due time.
      We are in such upheaval.
      Thank you for encouraging all to look before leaping, and quit seeking validation through bed hopping. You are doing something that is protecting and raising awareness.
      👍👏🤗🙏

    Its always been a fantasy of mine to stay in an old English house like yours, to be able to see all the fixtures and details and run my fingers over the old, intricate designs and windowsills. Also to walk outside and sit in the yard and take it all in.
    I never would have put the idea together to mix that experience with yoga, but when you mentioned that idea it just works SO well, the calm beauty of the environment there with Yoga, it'd be the ultimate relaxing escape from this busy world.
    I can just imagine spending a few days at a yoga retreat there, with my phone turned off, the outside world at bay.
    Beautiful idea.
    I can't afford it, I live on the West Coast if the USA and it would take a lot to even get there, but I know many people who can that I am definitely going to tell about this!
    Best of luck to you both!

    Lovely, thank you for sharing! So special in this day and age of wifi instant everything. Plus, I'm in America also and while I can't actually speak for everyone, I do believe we are starved for real culture here. When I was a child in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, a little friend of mine when I was 8, who had recently moved there from England after being raised there from birth, moved with her family to an authentic English Tudor mansion in a famous area of that city known for it's provincial real estate, going back to the industrial tycoons that initially built them from the late 1800's on in the area. Her's was supposedly built from the exact blueprints of a dutchess' home in England. What I remember is how old and amazing it was, and also needing lots of work. But it was very special. Even though the historical homes need lots of work, they are worth it, if the funds and willingness is there.

    Thank you very much for the tour of your home. Its an amazing property. Im American also and I understand this is a problem that several of the stately homes in England are having now because of all the restrictions. I couldn't imagine the cost of upkeep? I am wishing you both the best luck. You two are positively charming......and if I may say Sir...Good show landing an American. The Viscountess is a breath of fresh air, Sir.

    I live in a listed building and have one of those Airer’s in my bathroom (10ft high ceiling) and all my washing is dried in there. It’s heated with one radiator and dries overnight. I have a tumble dryer and it’s been years since I used it last.

    I have just seen this for the first time! Great filming! Can you show how you keep your home in order/organised? Do you have a china room? Does everyone have their own 'things to do' on a routine basis? Have you had a great throw out during lockdown? Do you do the vacuum cleaning/dusting? Full of admiration!

    I love the enthusiasm you both have and the humor. I’m an American too Julie, and have always loved Britain. In fact both sides of my ancestry is British. I’ve always loved learning anything I can about the art, the architecture, the history, etc. of Britain. So glad too that you are so concerned with the wildlife on the estate. Everything you were talking about sounds like this will be a most exciting vlog to follow. I wish you both a lot of luck and good craftsman to help guide you through all that needs to be done. Believe me, as I recently went through here in the states, if you don’t have quality, honorable craftsmen it can get even more complicated.

    Hello Julie from NY!!! I was watching your video about the many leaks you have. I don’t know if this will help you or not...but, you need to do the whole entire piping system with PVC piping. The reason why you have so many leaks is because when it’s being fixed, the other pipes are being moved around as well. With the PVC piping you won’t have the erosion cast iron pipes cause, which means the erosion is in your drinking water! Have your drinking water checked for all chemicals! Also, there is insulation available for you to wrap around your pipes so they don’t freeze. If you need to keep the cast iron piping because of the heritage rules, then run the new piping next to the cast iron. Another thing that will help you keep the home warm is... there is insulation which is installed by cutting a small circular hole in the wall and it blows the installation into the walls! All of this will keep your home warm, which will lower your heating costs & most importantly it will keep all of your many beautiful rooms and a antiques safe from leaks. I hope this helps! Much love from your homeland across the pond!
