  • 1965 "Wide World Of Sports" feature on the opening of the Houston Astrodome. Taped prior to the Yankees and Astros playing each other in an exhibition game that was considered the formal launching of the new facility. We get to see a young Rusty Staub and Roger Maris for a rather pointless demonstration, and Houston manager Lum Harris touches on the new facility's one problem that the designers failed to anticipate (which later necessitated the invention of artificial turf).

WOW. Awesome vintage video here. The opening of the Astrodome in 1965 just amazing. With the legendary Howard Cosell along with players like Rusty Staub and the great Roger Maris. I believe Mickey Mantle hit the first home run ever in the Astrodome. Again thx for uploading this nostalgia video. 👍👍👍

This is what UA-cam is all about, not some cat walking over piano keys, but things like this that you never knew existed until you saw it with your own 2 eyes.

Pre-toupee Cosell. The Yankee dynasty got to the Astrodome just in time to collapse. But it hadn't happened yet.

Sixty years ago the Astrodome was state of the art and the eighth wonder of the world, now it's only an empty decaying hulk.

Howard’s voice sounds just a little bit high-pitched as though the tape speed is a touch fast.
But it’s still great listening to him.

Howard Cosell is iconic. His detractors have already been forgotten.

A must-watch concerning the Astrodome is Robert Altman's Brewster McCloud. Most of the film's scenes take place there because the title character lives in the utility room in the stadium's bowels.

No, apartment is correct. Judge Hofheinz actually lived there during those early years of his ownership.

@@epaddon didn't he have a bowling alley also in the dome?

The future billion dollar mallparks were a foregone conclusion with this glaring monstrosity.
    Did Rusty call him Howie?
