I remember watching this game , live...... was on the edge of my seat...... I was pumped up! Go Mike Schmidt!! Two legends battling it out.....and yes, Harry and Ashburn , together; .....were priceless.
I don't care what his won-lost career record was, Nolan Ryan was one of the most feared and dominant pitchers of all time. I grew up in the '70s and he was one of my favorite pitchers to watch. His longevity alone and performing at a high level well into his 40s make him one of a kind, the likes of which baseball will never see again. Anyone from my era who was lucky enough to see him pitch will understand. And I hope those baseball fans who weren't able to witness his dominance will use these platforms such as UA-cam to go back and learn and watch the great Nolan Ryan.
Watching & listening to Phillie games were never the same after Richy Ashburn passed away & after Harry passed away 12 years later.
Forget a no-hitter, this was the kind of pitching performance it took for Nolan Ryan just to record a win for most of his career. One can only imagine what his w-l record would've been with just average run support. Someone should a video highlighting all of Nolan Ryan's starts from his 1987 8-16 season.
I saw Nolan's first start of the 1988 season on April 8 in Cincinnati. He was 41 at the time and still throwing 97 mph.
They might call Cal Ripken the "Iron Man". But I think Nolan Ryan was the Superman of baseball.
According to the documentary "Fastball", Nolan Ryan was the fastest pitcher of all time. Thats impressive.
But what makes him Superman is that he did it 9 innings at a time, every 4th day...FOR 27 YEARS!
Nobody will ever do that again....EVER.
...and thats why he is Superman.
Nolan Ryan was a BEAST.
He was one of those pitchers I always stopped and watched whenever he pitched.
Plus, go watch him put Robin Ventura in his place LOL!

Keep in mind that he was clocked at 100mph or so back then. For a point of reference that would equate to around 107 to 110mph on today's guns that you see flash on your screen after every pitch.
Ryan had about five no hitters broken up in the ninth inning. To think, he was eight or so outs away from having as many as 12 no hitters in his career. That's insane.
Interestingly, he lost all 5 9th-inning no-hitters with 1 out.
He had a record 12 1-hitters tied with Bob Feller.

Watching Phillie games were great because of Harry and Whitey even though they were usually out of the pennant race by Memorial Day.
I was at this game. I was sitting in the outfield next to a guy and his VERY pregnant wife. Going into the ninth, he kept saying, “If he gets it, boy or girl, we’re naming the kid Nolan.”
Only appropriate that if it had to be broken up, it was broken up by a fellow future hall of famer.
That was fun.

He had the record for 1- hitters, 2-hitters, 3-hitters, and, of course, no-hitters. Legendary.
Robin Ventura is the only player to get hit more than a half a dozen times on one at bat. The pitcher was none other than Nolan Ryan. ⚾
I remember Ventura saying afterwards, those weren't punches, those were noogies!☺

Nolan Ryan was a Pitcher that was barely over 500 in his career but did have 7 no hitters! This shows just how hard they are to get.
No, it shows what Nolan Ryan had to do just to get a win. His run support could've been the worst of any mlb pitcher with that many starts. The year before this: 1987 was possibly his best season, and at age 41. His w-l record: 8-16. He should've won the Cy Young award that year...with an 8-16 record, seriously.
@@toordal During his prime from 1972 to 1977 Ryan had 223 starts .His team scored 2 runs or less in 92 of them .That means if he allows 2 runs earned or unearned he can't win.
It's unbelievable he never won a Cy young award and a perfect game.
Unfortunately Ryan just didn't have that dominating consistency day in and day out, like a Lefty Carlton, Tom Seaver, or a Greg Maddux.
His last season with the Astros, then he went to the rangers.
Ryan throwing 95 mph heaters in the ninth. They dont make them like that anymore.

Looks like he ran out of gas. When he left the Astros and went to Texas Rangers thats when Tom House help get Nolan in bette shape. Then he threw 2 more no hitters. So at this game Nolan fastball was averaging 95 while at the rangers his fastball was average 98 to 100.
I rather him have at least one perfect game.

John Facenda was the best. But I consider him a close 2nd. Facenda's nickname was "The Voice of God". I would consider him "THE VOICE". But what was his name anyway? I always forget. Coincidentally, I was trying to think of it earlier today from another video.

Ryan threw so many 1-hitters for the Astros while some people around here were saying he was washed up. Ignorance. Obviously, they never watched the Astros like I did. Only claimed to be fans. Fairweather fans/bandwagoners is what I call them. He just didn't have much run support after '86 season which this video proves. He had several no-hitters going until the late innings. And I know he had several with the Angels too. I don't blame him for going to the Rangers after this although I was jealous as hell at the time.
Nolan Ryan was a choker. He choked this game away. Remember the 1980 NLCS? Oh I do. Up 5-2 in the 8th at home and he choked. Only time his whole career he blew a 3 run lead in the 8th inning or later and he picked the game to send his team to the world series to wet the bed.
@@robertcourson8002 He Also "choked" the next year in game 5 of the NLDS in LA. They played a division series that year because of strike in the middle of the season. But that's the only two times I've seen him so-called "choke". But I wouldn't consider him a "choker" per se. Unless you include the no-hitters he had going into the 9th and giving up a hit in the 9th as choking. One with the Angels (I think '74 or '75) where he ended up losing the game because of a mental error on the shortstop or 2nd baseman in the 9th inning and was ruled a hit because it wasn't a physical error. Ended up losing the game. But if you wanna consider his lost no-hitters as choking, then yea. But that's not choking to me.

@@robertcourson8002 Yea, they lost both those games of that series. I don't know if you remember but Game 5 against the Mets in NY was the game where umpire Fred Brocklander called Keith Hernandez safe at 1st in the 8th or 9th inning when he was out by a full step. The front page on the Houston Chronicle the next day was "WE WAZ ROBBED" and below it had a still shot of the play at the moment it was actually caught by 1st baseman and Hernandez was a full step away. Mets went on to go ahead (maybe win) with that run I think. Hernandez said later he used psychology by yelling "safe" at the time Glenn Davis (or whoever was playing 1st at that particular time) caught the ball. So Brocklander "took the bait" and called him safe.

The series that bothered me more was the 80 series against the Phillies ....if he holds on to that lead then the Astros win their first title that year and changes the whole direction of that franchise. I am kinda like you. I can't really call Ryan a choker....but on that 1 day he was. There was no excuse in blowing that 3 run lead in the 8th inning in the pitchers paradise known as the Astrodome. That to me was the worse. Game 6 in 86 is real close though. Up 3 in the 9th at home and some how lose.
