In this Baseball's 92nd World Series, it pitted the Team of the Century (Yankees) vs. the Team of the 90's (Braves). One was looking to win their 23rd title--their first in 18 years. The other looking to join the 1921-'22 NY Giants, 1907-'08 Cubs and and 1975-'76 Big Red Machine of Cincinnati as NL teams to win back-to-back titles.
Following an opening night rainout, Game 1 was played on Sunday at the House that Ruth Built, the day in which Mickey Mantle would've turned 65. But a 19-year old from Curacao--who began the year in Class A ball in Durham--grabbed the spotlight. Andruw Jones homered in his first WS at-bat in the 2nd off Andy Pettitte. Then, one inning later, Andruw hit a 3-run shot to cap a 6-run frame and become just the second player of any age to go deep in his first two WS at bats. Behind John Smoltz, the Braves cruised in Game 1, 12-1, outscoring their opponents 44-2 in the last 4 games. Then, in Game 2, Greg Maddux went 8 strong innings on just 82 pitches, and the Braves won again, 4-0, as Fred McGriff drove in three runs. Two games up, the Braves were halfway to their second straight title.
Back in Atlanta for Game 3, the Yankees had to win to stay alive. But if Cone could survive aneurysm in late May, facing the Braves down 2-0 on the road was a breeze. Cone allowed only one run in six gutsy innings. Bernie Williams drove in three runs, including a two run shot in the 8th, and the Yanks won, 5-2.
But in Game 4, the Braves got to Kenny Rogers early and often. They scored four in the second, and by the 5th inning, led, 6-0. Atlanta was on their way to a 3 games to 1 lead in the series, and then, the roof caved in. The Yanks scored three in the 6th to cut it in half. Then, two innings later, the Yanks had runners on the corners with one out, and reserve catcher Jim Leyritz up facing hard-throwing Mark Wohlers. With the count 2-and-2, Leyritz got a hanging slider, and he drilled it, just clearing the LF wall for a game-tying 3-run shot. After escaping a two-on oneout-jam in the bottom of the 9th, the Yanks loaded the bases with two outs in the 10th. Then, pinch-hitter Wade Boggs worked a full count and drew a walk to force home the go-ahead run. John Wetteland slammed the door in the bottom half and the Yanks won a classic, 8-6, and even the series at two games each.
If Game 4 was a nail-biter, the fifth game was a pitchers' duel between John Smoltz and Pettitte. Smoltz struck out 10 and allowed only one unearned run in eight innings of work. Unfortunately for the Braves, Pettitte was better, allowing no runs through 8. Then, in the 9th, the Braves threatened. Chipper Jones doubled to lead off, then moved to third on a groundout. Wetteland came on, and got Lopez to ground out--and hold Chipper at third. Following an intentional walk, pinch-hitter Luis Polonia hit a drive to right that looked to go in the gap. But Paul O'Neill, bad hamstring and all, made a great running catch to preserve the 1-0 win, and put the Yanks up in the series, 3 games to 2. Improbably, the Yankees were 8-0 on the road in the 1996 postseason.
More good news for the Yankee family as the scene shifted back to E 161st street. On Friday, Joe's brother, Frank Torre got a new heart donated by a young man from the Bronx. After this, you kinda knew Destiny was on the Yankees' side. In Game 6, the Yanks got to Greg Maddux for three runs in the third. The key hit a triple by Joe Girardi. Jimmy Key and the bullpen made it stand. And when Wetteland got Mark Lemke to foul out in the 9th with two on and two out, the Yankees won, 3-2, and capture their 23rd World Series championship. The dark days of Yankees' baseball were over. Wetteland was named the Series MVP in a series that had plenty of side stories. The celebration afterwards was spectacular, even coming from someone who is not a Yankees' fan.

That was the turning point in the series: Braves up 6 to nothing, the Yankees tie it up. All New York ever since.
If the Braves hold on & win that game, they for sure would've won back-to-back World Series championships, I don't think the Yankees would've had any shot at coming back from down 3-games-to-1 vs Atlanta. Indeed, that comeback win by the Yankees really shifted momentum in the Series on their side from that moment on.
I think that Game 3 loss affected their mentality in seasons after that. They win that game and they likely win that series and probably return the next season against the Indians. One game being the difference in a dynasty and What If?
I'm a quasi-Yankee fan, so I can say this with love. They got so lucky in this series. If the RF umpire doesn't get in Dye's way in Game 4, they don't rally to tie it. Every pop-up, line drive, and call went their way and it started a snowball rolling down the hill. Hats off to them for their performance, but the Braves will say they this one hurts the most. They were the better team, they had a 2-0 lead that felt like a 3.5-0 lead. In fact, the Yankees were outscored in the series too.

Game 4 is the difference between a new Yankees dynasty and the Braves likely having their own. The Braves were a Kevin Brown and Eric Gregg away from a third straight WS appearance against an Indians team not as good as the one they faced in '95.

The biggest WS choke ever belongs to this 1996 Atlanta team.
This 1996 Atlanta team looked like a super-team in this WS, ready to cement their spot as a non-asterisk-dynasty, since it all began in 1991.
Now, The biggest WS choke would have been the 2001 Arizona Dbacks, but the DBacks were able to hold on and beat the Yankees at the very end.
Maddux looked like a stud in that game 2, he should have completed the game, since he only threw 82 pitches. And Smoltz was sensational in games 1 and 5

That Atlanta defense was horrible in game 4, while the Yankees defense was great in game 4. And Atlantas defense was bad again in game 5 while the Yankees defense was great in game 5

Game 4 and Game 5 = Atlantas defense was HORRIBLE both games, while the Yankees defense was SENSATIONAL both games

I would know as a Blue Jays fan( 😉 ), it was Game 3 in '92 where Bobby Cox got tossed.

Interesting how this World Series, the first for this core, mirrors the 2001 Series which was the last run for many of them.
96: Braves take a 2-0 lead behind Smoltz & Maddux. 01: DBacks take a 2-0 lead behind Schilling & Johnson.
96: Yankees win game 3 fairly comfortably. 01: Yankees win game 3 a little less comfortably but never trail.
96: Yankees cap off a 6-run comeback in the 8th inning of game 4 and win in extras. 01: Yankees come back from down 2 with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th and win game 4 in extras.
96: Yankees ride the momentum for their third straight win in game 5. 01: Yankees get their second straight tying HR with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, and win game 5 in extras for their third straight win of the series.
Then the stories diverge just a tad.

To get blown out at home 12-1 and shut out at home 4-0 in first 2 games..then to be down 6-0 nothing on the road..it's like they would not just not be denied.

The crowd at the stadium in 1996 were die hard Yankee fans who had endured 15 years of mediocre to awful Yankee teams. The energy in that stadium was at a nuclear level.
I wouldnt say that every Yankee season from 1982 till 1995 was mediocre to awful baseball. Only the five seasons of 1982-1989-1990-1991-1992 were mediocre to awful. The other seasons they were good or great or elite, but just had tough luck.

1996 was both David Justice and Marquis Grissom final season with the Braves, as both players will be traded in the offseason to Cleveland for Kenny Lofton

This was John Wettland final season with the Yankees, as he will sign with the Rangers in the offseason. Yankees will make their set-up-man, Mariano Rivera, to be their new closer starting next 1997 season
This World Series was somewhat of a rematch of both the 1957 World Series and the 1958 World Series, when the Milwaukee Braves and the New York Yankees split those two World Series, both winning each WS in 7 games. Braves won in 1957 while the Yankees won in 1958

Those 90s yanks were the dynasty. So sick of hearing about that big red machine that was only good one or 2 years 1975 76. The 1998 team won 125 games. Best ever
What a comeback by the Yankees in the '96 World Series, after being embarrassed in the 1st 2 games at home, then going down to Atlanta & sweeping all 3 games there including their dramatic comeback win in Game 4. Those '96 Yankees were like a 'cinderella' team, huge underdogs vs that Braves ballclub but they got it done & won the '96 WS in dramatic style.

The umpire was an equal opportunity call blower, though. He was consistent about his strike zone, even if it was wrong.

I know Bob Costas dubbed the Braves the "team of the '90s" after the final out the previous year, but any claim to that died after this series. They were in a perfect position to win back-to-back after taking the first two in New York and then proceeded to lose ALL THREE home games, one of which involved blowing a 6-0 lead before the Yankees hammered the final nail in the coffin back home.
This series, combined with the Yankees winning two more titles in the decade as well as the Braves losing several NLCS they should have won basically means that Costas's remarks aged very poorly.
I bet Braves fans even after winning the recent title want a rematch with the Yanks for unfinished business.

The 1997 Marlins was an expansion team, but their roster was elite.
If Steinbrenner was the owner, he definitely would've been out in a heartbeat. Dude is so serious about winning that he apologized to NY fans after the Yanks lost the '81 series.
