Bit of a pre warning,. The lead up to the war of the 5 kings was about a year so we got about a year in the 1st season of Game of Thrones... The lead up to the dance of the dragons was about 30 years,.. So you're going to get about 30 years crammed into one season,. They did it very well, But try to be mindful of who's who while you're watching the targaryen family growing
it seems that none of you know why daemon hates rhea so much, he was forced to marry her and they changed their age in the show, but in the book he was barely 15 years old and she was already an adult...
No Spoilers but here are some points to get some things clear: * Not all white-hairs are Targaryens. The Valaryon's (the white-haired black dude in the council) also have white hair because they have the same country of origin as Targaryens. * The narrator at the beginning was indeed Rhaenyra, the daughter of the current king. * Targaryens mostly marry to keep bloodlines pure (because their blood calls to dragons), but also for political advantage. * The Queen Who Never Was (the lady with white hair who is married with the black dude) was in competition for the throne way back when but lost because she is a woman. She is the cousin to the current King. * The Queen who died this episode was also the current King's cousin. She is from house Arryn but has Targaryen blood on her mum's side, hence the white hair.
This is exactly why people should listen instead of talking over the dialogue, they may then have some understanding of what’s going on and who is who! Great summary
@@puppetmaster8551 That wasn't the issue, the issue was the showrunners. Thankfully this show has a true fan as showrunner and also handpicked by George.
The queen was Aemma Arryn. She's half-Targaryen through her mother so that's why she has silver hair but her father was the lord of the Vale. Her mother was the sister of the king's parents so that makes them first cousins.
Viserys and Daemon are the children of King Jaehaerys second son. Rhaenys (wife of Lord Corlys) was the only child of Jaehaerys' firstborn. Viserys married his cousin Aemma Arryn, who herself was a granddaughter of the Old King (hence the white hair.) The current King's Council is Otto Hightower, Hand of the King, Corlys Velaryon, Master of Ships, Lyonel Strong, Master of Laws and Lyman Beesbury, Master of Coin. Alicent Hightower is the Hand's daughter and Rhaenyra's best friend.
@@HK-gm8pe GRRM said he purposely wrote this event in such a way that you don't know if Daemon said it or if Otto lied. Daemon is GRRMs favorite character and I'm here for it!
This isn't a spoiler but just background information. You are right. Targaryens only wed each other whenever they can to strengthen their dragonriding blood and keep it within their family. King Viserys and Queen Aemma were first cousins (Aemma's mother was a Targaryen princess and a daughter of the Old King, Jaehaerys, who was in the first scene). Viserys and Daemon's parents were brother and sister who were also children of the Old King. Rhaenys, the Queen who Never Was, was the Old King's eldest grandchild and is half Baratheon and Viserys, Daemon and Aemma's first cousin. Her father was Jaehaerys' eldest son and her mother was a Baratheon (who also happened to be Jaehaerys' half-sister and, therefore, an aunt of her husband). This is why she called the Baratheon riding during the tourney cousin. The Old King, King Jaehaerys, had been married to his sister, Queen Alysanne - grandmother of Rhaenys, Viserys, Daemon and Aemma.
My wife and I...exactly like you two in terms of how we felt about GoT and we too did not intend to dive into this. I started it a little late after hearing all the good stuff. My wife finally gave in once I started saying "yep, it's actually really good". Have fun. Great season 1
Fun fact: House Hightower is actually a rich noble house with vassals of their own sworn to House Tyrell of Highgarden(Loras and Margaery’s house). Queen Margaery and Ser Loras’s mother is actually a Hightower.
I feel the same way about Milly Alcock as I do about Emilia Clarke, they are both hauntingly beautiful, scary, and strong. The casting was perfect, this show has resparked my enthusiasm for this universe. I can't wait for more of Dos Cavazos' reactions!
Otto Hightower, Rhaenrya's biggest supporter in the small council. Salute to this man for suggesting Rhaenyra be made the king's heir, breaking all traditions! We love an ally 🥲.

Excited to watch this again with yall. This was a rare season where each episode seemed to build and build tension, making each more exciting than the last.
31:08 When Aegon the Conqueror had the Iron Throne created, he purposely wanted the seat to be barbed and uncomfortable. The reasoning behind this method was that, as Aegon himself put it (paraphrasing, as I don’t have my canon available at the time of typing this), “a ruler should never sit easy when in power.” It’s to keep the ruler humble-and, as you notice with Aegon’s dream, the Iron Throne was supposed to symbolize the uniting of the Living against the Dead in the Great War.
I can’t believe I didn’t realize that one of my favorite reaction channels hadn’t reacted to HotD before! I’m so pumped to watch you guys react to this!

There was always a fair amount of incest in the Targaryen family. The first king, Aegon, had his two sisters for wives. (The three of them had a mother from the House of Velaryon, the family with the guy in the small council named Corlys Velaryon, who was concerned about the Crab-feeder guy in the Step Stones islands. So those two families have a history of intermarriage from the beginning of the dynasty and multiple times since then.) The old king at the beginning, Jaehaerys, is the (supposed) grandson of Aegon. (There is a theory that Aegon was sterile and his sister-wives had sons with other men or via magic) Viscerys and his wife Aemma Arryn are grandchildren of the old king Jaehaerys, and are cousins of each other. The 'Queen that Never Was', Rhaenys Targaryen was the daughter of Jaehaerys's oldest child and son Aemon Targaryen and a woman named Jocelyn Baratheon. That's why Rhaenys has such a strong claim, and also why that Baratheon guy wanted her favor in the tournament. Very often there is brother-sister incest. Jaehaerys and his own sister-wife Alysanne Targaryen were brother and sister with epic amounts of successful incest resulting in nine live children. But for various misfortunes, few of their children survived to reproduce. Nonetheless, cousin marriage is also common, and completely unrelated marriage can take place.
'Aegon was sterile and his sister-wives had sons with other men or via magic' this not true Visenya was faithful she never slept with another men only Rhaenys did (rumours) and she was a fun seeker girl i mean she did that for fun not for procreate...
During this period of time the Red Keep was a new building, compared to Season 1 of GoT. It was about 75 years old by this moment in time just like the Dragonpit. Alicent is the Hand's, Otto Hightower, daughter and Rhaenyra's best friend. Also the voiceover in the beginning of the episode, Rhaenyra, was 4 when the Great Council took place, her mother was pregnant with another baby back them. Daemon is amazing and I'm sure you will love him as you watch the show. Also a little warning. This show will have some time jumps, we will have from months and up to ten years. It's different from GoT but they are needed to understand what's coming.
After the disappointment of the final season of GoT, I was a somewhat hesitant to watch HotD. That being said, this show managed to exceed far beyond my expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed this first season & am pumped for season 2!
I really don’t get the hate for the last season if you liked the rest. Personally I think after season 4 it got bad. Yet the last season was just more of seasons 6 and 7.
At the beginning I was pessimistic about this show too, but I gave it a chance, in the worst case scenario I would lose an hour of my time and not go back, but I wasn't disappointed at all. The first episode took me back to that feeling of enjoying a good episode of GOT.
YES!!! I'm so excited you guys finally reacted to this show! It's a fantastic ride so far and I can't wait for season 2! I'll be looking forward to watching all of your reactions.
Daemon’s marriage was arranged by his grandmother, Good Queen Alysanne. She was the Queen, wife and sister to the king you saw at the very beginning of this episode, King Jaehaerys, when they were trying to determine who his heir would be. She arranged a lot of marriages for her many children and grandchildren. And she had Daemon married to an important house in the Vale, House Royce. But this was not Daemon’s choice. I always recommend for anyone who really enjoyed the original series to read the books. They really add so much more to the story and the world. And there are quite a few differences from the show.
31:21 "Always forget that they can be fine in fire and stuff." THEY CAN'T! Daenerys wasn't burned in season 1 because of the blood magic ritual, George Martin himself said that it was a miraculous moment and to repeat it would take away the significance of it. No better proof that the writers ignored him after they passed the book material than them doing exactly that in season 6. Targaryens CAN burn! They do have some "resistance" to heat, though, due to their race being somewhat magical, but that's it. Like, in terms of RPG, they would have +5 to fire resistance ;p
At the time of Jaehaerys announcement that Viserys would be his heir Rhaenyra was about 7-9 (I haven’t read the beginning of the book for a while) “Kings landing has been in decline since my grandmother passed” Alysanne did so much to help everyone and I cried for like a solid 10 minutes when she died in the book :(
the pregnant woman in the beginning was Queen Aemma, the wife of King Viserys. Not Rhaenys. The narrator of the first scene of the episode in which Viserys was chosen as the next king is his daughter, Rhaenyra, who is mostly our main character. I noticed there was some confusion about that on Kacee's part.
Great to be back with you guys. Totally agree on hesitating in getting into this show. Hearing them speak old Valerian and especially Rhanyras 1st appearance in Cyrax and the music immediately got me excited haha.
"You'd think they'd sand that (throne) down." GRRM specifically wrote it to be dangerous. When Aegon forged the throne, it was with the intention that no king should sit easily on a throne, that he should always remain vigilant and uncomfortable.
Best show of the year bro. Just brilliant writing and character development. Music by Rawin is always stellar. I'm so stoked you guys are finally starting House of the dragon. Biggest show this year. Enjoy
Also buddy the reason why everything looks nicer in kings landing and around westeros at this time period is because the realm was at its peak decadence under the targaryens. Rich and thriving. In game of thrones it was in post war almost poverty
What really gave me confidence starting out was that Benioff and Weiss were nowhere near this show (and the marketing was quite amusingly insistent on getting that across).
Happy to see you two reacting to this show. I remember commenting a while back, requesting for the two of you to react to Game of Thrones, but you told me that you’d already seen it. Unfortunate as that was with GOT being my favorite show, it proved to me then that all your reactions are genuine. Looking forward to watching your reactions to House of the Dragon.
Glad you two are starting this up. Just as a fyi if it wasn't obvious, due to the way dragons were magically tethered by blood back in Valyria, having Valyrian blood (even partial) is necessary to bond with a dragon. So this keeping it all in the family isn't some weird Targaryen kink, but rather they were very careful which houses they'd share their bloodline with. Think of it like giving tactical nukes to a major house, which is why there was so much inbreeding to make sure they controlled all of the dragons.
I'm so excited to see y'all react to this, I think you'll really love it! If you watch closely you'll notice the joust and the birth parallel each other. Daemon, the heir (baby Baelon) comes down the list (birth canal) sideways, and it becomes a battle of swords (knives). It looks like Daemon (the baby) comes out on top until he gets the wind knocked out of him (baby can't breathe properly), and ultimately Daemon yields (baby Baelon dies). Just one example of the amazing writing/directing you're in for with this show, enjoy!
"Over the centuries, House Targaryen has produced both great men and monsters. Prince Daemon was both. In his day, there was not a man so admired, so beloved, and so reviled in all Westeros. He was made of light and darkness in equal parts. To some, he was a hero, to others the blackest of villains." ~Archmaester Gyldyne You're right to feel like Daemon loves his family, especially his brother. A quick backstory, for example. Daemon was only 16 years old at the time of the Great Council of Harrenhal, which chose Viserys to be king. Daemon was concerned there could be challange to Viserys ascension if chosen. So before the council took place, Daemon assembled an army of Hedge Knights and Sellswords from throughout the kingdom to defend Viserys claim, should he be chosen.
This show made me fall in love with a world I hated after GoT S8. That's quite an achievement. And Season 1 was just the prologue to the war (best parts are yet to come).
Soooo excited you guys are watching this! I think you’re going to love this show, it’s a ride! I love your reactions, can’t wait to watch it again with you!
It's often said that when a Targaryen is born the gods toss a coin to determine greatness or madness. In Daemon's case, I suspect the coin landed on its edge. He seems to show flashes of both sides. Definitely an interesting character.
Daemon doesn’t really seem to want the throne just Targaryen’s in power. He laughed when spying at the council’s assumptions and his brother knowing better. That Targaryen family bond is something else. Can’t say more without spoiling. Otto and Daemon don’t like each other. Why might that be seeing as we know Otto in more than what meets the King’s eye? 🤔
I've been following you for some time now and I don't even need to say that since then, I've simply enjoyed the channel's reactions a lot. There are videos that I rewatch many times. Amazing channel, you are amazing. #I'm from Brazil #I Love House of the dragon
Just so you're aware, actors and actresses will occasionally switch from 1 episode to the next if there's a time skip. Even major ones. Don't let it ruin your focus. :P Enjoy!
I actually missed the premier when it aired, I had no intention to watch this show after the disappointment of GoT. But the day after it aired a friend asked if I'd seen it and said it was really good. He was the one who originally convinced me to watch GoT, so I decided to give HotD a chance (tee hee). I was blown away by how good it was (tee hee). It felt like I was watching the first season of GoT for the first time all over again (like a virgin? Okay, I'll stop now). I wondered afterword how it could be so good after the disaster that was GoT, so I looked into it and learned that GRRM was, in his words, even more involved in the making of the show than he was in the making of GoT. My expectations and excitement for this show immediately skyrocketed, and season 1 did not disappoint.
Yes! I'm so excited y'all are reacting to this show. I too am a huge GoT fan and felt burned by the final season and wasn't sure I'd even watch this. But OMG I LOVED IT! Can't wait to see y'all's reactions and I can't wait for season 2!
I don’t know if you both noticed, but Viserys is carrying the weapon formally known as the Cat’s Paw Dagger, the blade that killed Littlefinger, the Night King, maimed Catelyn, and nearly killed Bran-currently with Arya going “west of Westeros.” My obsession now is learning how the CPD went from Viserys I to the cutthroat (via Littlefinger) in GoT 1x2-or-3.
I would guess the dagger was still in the Red Keep when Robert Baratheon became king. Joffrey is the one who sends the assassin to kill Bran, so it probably came from him.
I commend you for getting the birthing scene right. So many people think the king had to choose between his wife and the baby, and it gives them the wrong impression of the king. When in fact it was a choice to try to save the baby or not. The mother was going to die regardless.
So looking forward to your HotD journey! The first season of HotD stood out just as much as the first season of GoT, in some ways even surpasses it and they stick the landing spectacularly. The hype is officially real now! Unlike the GoT series HotD won't run out of sources material to pull from since the history of Westeros and the "Dance of the Dragon" civil war is described pretty well on the page. In addition to the great selection of showrunners and writers this time around GRRM is also directly involved in the writing on the show so unless he dies (Knock on wood) I feel pretty safe joining in on the hypetrain. Only 20 months or so until the the second season... yay!
There's a myth/legend in universe that the Iron Throne knows who is capable of the power it holds, and those who aren't cannot sit on it without being wounded by it.
One of the coolest things about this series imo is that unlike GoT, HBO isnt taking a chance on a new property, so they are fully invested throwing funding behind making everything look and feel the way GRRM wrote for, so we get to finally see the scale and spectacle of King’s Landing and Westeros at the height of the Targaryan empire
I cannot wait!!! TO see your reaction to this show. This is probably the best 1st season to any show I've ever seen. Cant wait! Im subbing just for this alone lol.
No Targaryens are not fine in fire. That is a mother of dragons Daenerys thing only. She was destined to bring back the dragons through blood and fire. Only her. His hand is in fire just as you or I would do it for a few seconds. As long as your hand is moving like his is doing no one spot will burn. GRRM said he regretted not explaining that better in the TV show because so many thought it was a Targaryen thing and that even John Snow would not burn but that is not the case.
The dark and handsome unknown common born Criston Cole, cutting a very Jon Snow-esque figure, unseats the Prince himself, then audaciously walks up to the princess to ask for her wreath, which she gladly indulges him, her best friend giggling beside her. Such an insignificant thing in the middle of all this tragic and impactful events : the king's wife and the heir's death, a new heir, a rogue prince. And yet...here it all begins.

It's funny watching people who don't know where this is going trying to guess ha ha, youre gonna love this show.
At the time of Jaehaerys announcement that Viserys would be his heir Rhaenyra was about 7-9 (I haven’t read the beginning of the book for a while)
“Kings landing has been in decline since my grandmother passed” Alysanne did so much to help everyone and I cried for like a solid 10 minutes when she died in the book :(
the pregnant woman in the beginning was Queen Aemma, the wife of King Viserys. Not Rhaenys. The narrator of the first scene of the episode in which Viserys was chosen as the next king is his daughter, Rhaenyra, who is mostly our main character. I noticed there was some confusion about that on Kacee's part.
So glad you're watching this!
Oh this will be great. Nice surprise for Christmas! You will not regret it. This show is brilliant and that fact itself was such a relief.
Great to be back with you guys. Totally agree on hesitating in getting into this show. Hearing them speak old Valerian and especially Rhanyras 1st appearance in Cyrax and the music immediately got me excited haha.
"You'd think they'd sand that (throne) down."
GRRM specifically wrote it to be dangerous.
It's hard to take Daemon seriously when he's smirking. He just looks so fricking adorable in those moments!
What really gave me confidence starting out was that Benioff and Weiss were nowhere near this show (and the marketing was quite amusingly insistent on getting that across).
Fun fact (if not already mentioned): The actor who portrayed King Robert Baratheon, Mark Addy, also played a role in Knight's Tale. :)
Glad to see you guys starting to watch it! It will not disappoint!
Dang, the moment you guys mention Tony Hawks pro skater, bring back so much nostalgia to my head. 🤣🤣🤣
Already uploaded, wow. I was thinking it’d be a bit of a wait. I’m so happy. Can’t wait to see. Happy holidays and love to you and your family.
Awesome show right, You guys should check out the new series Wednesday!
Think of it like giving tactical nukes to a major house, which is why there was so much inbreeding to make sure they controlled all of the dragons.
yes so happy you two are watching this show
It fills my heart with both happiness and excitement to see that you guys have started HOTD, I'm so ready!!!
Both this and game of thrones are amazing shows, no matter how it all will end
I ore ordered the 4K blu ray. It should be coming in next week!
Such a beautiful wedding entrance
To some, he was a hero, to others the blackest of villains."
~Archmaester Gyldyne
You're right to feel like Daemon loves his family, especially his brother.
I'm so excited you guys decided to watch this
This show made me fall in love with a world I hated after GoT S8. That's quite an achievement. And Season 1 was just the prologue to the war (best parts are yet to come).
14:45 u had such a good opportunity to say "knocked him on his bare-asseon (baratheon)
I’m so glad your both reacting to the show.
FUN FACT: Jon is a direct descendant of Rhaenyra.
Each episode keeps getting better and better. ✌️
Soooo excited you guys are watching this! I think you’re going to love this show, it’s a ride! I love your reactions, can’t wait to watch it again with you!
So glad you’re watching it
It's often said that when a Targaryen is born the gods toss a coin to determine greatness or madness.
#I'm from Brazil
#I Love House of the dragon
Just so you're aware, actors and actresses will occasionally switch from 1 episode to the next if there's a time skip. Even major ones. Don't let it ruin your focus. :P Enjoy!
Yea the time jumps were jarring at first
TBH, i watch this show only just for ameond ( god eye ) and daemon T. and alicent 4th son daeron targaryen
Damn you played the theme song at your wedding. You guys were definitely super fans. 😂
The Rogue Prince and caraxes ❤️
Aemma Arryn was the daughter of Princess Daella Targaryen--so she was half, and her daughter is 3/4 Targaryen.
I don’t know if you both noticed, but Viserys is carrying the weapon formally known as the Cat’s Paw Dagger, the blade that killed Littlefinger, the Night King, maimed Catelyn, and nearly killed Bran-currently with Arya going “west of Westeros.”
My obsession now is learning how the CPD went from Viserys I to the cutthroat (via Littlefinger) in GoT 1x2-or-3.
The mother was going to die regardless.
sooooo happy you are watching this!!!
You’re going to be so invested!
a few minutes ago i got your reaction to episode 7 suggested to me & I'm like umm i can't START there so i'm here
27:45 He really just said “if the seed is strong.”
When a ruler gets cut on the iron throne it's symbolizes that the iron throne is rejecting the ruler.
Only 20 months or so until the the second season... yay!
I like how you're keeping an open mind to this show, it is better enjoyed that way.
You guys are really going to enjoy this. I have been watching you long enough to know this.
Kacee would want for Daemon to blow Viserys birthday candles just for the drama. 😂
oh my god, I'm so sorry you guys watched the finale right after your wedding lmao i can't help but laugh a little bit
Love the series so much . This show is so amazing guys. Can't wait for yall reaction
There's a myth/legend in universe that the Iron Throne knows who is capable of the power it holds, and those who aren't cannot sit on it without being wounded by it.
Might be the first reaction I’ve seen where you understood she’d die either way. Finally. Congrats
Fantastic show! They really killed it
I cannot wait!!! TO see your reaction to this show. This is probably the best 1st season to any show I've ever seen. Cant wait! Im subbing just for this alone lol.
Did y’all know your episode 2 is gone?? :o was gonna watch but can’t find it
Welcome aboard guys. You’re in for an exciting ride (no pun intended).
This is the best live TV show in years,it won't disappoint you I'm sure.
