- Welcome to our reaction of House of the Dragon episode 1x1. This Game of Thrones Prequel show just started and I have to say we absolutely loved the tone, the cinematography, the action and pretty much everything. It felt so good to be back in Westeros. Loved the new characters and cannot wait to see where this juicy plot goes haha. Hope you guys enjoy our reaction and review! Unfortunately we lost the file for the outro with our conversation post watching but we will give our thoughts in the comment section. In case you didn’t know we lost our Outro file for this video that contained our review side of things. So here it goes! We absolutely loved the cinematography, the action and the introduction to all of the new Characters. But the one thing that truly stood out was how well they built tension using sutil anxiety inducing techniques. Absolutely amazing, loved this episode and cannot wait for Sunday!
the actress that played the King's wife did a great job. She made that scene hard to watch and listen to.
Oh absolutely!! It was so heart-wrenching to watch what was unfolding, even though we knew it was likely not going to end well. She still had us rooting for her, yet that tension made it almost unbearable to witness the whole thing
I loved Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen especially how he goes from seeming to be a villain to more of an honorable man as he gets older
Here's what the book Fire & Blood says about Daemon Targaryen: "In his day there was not a man so admired, so beloved, and so reviled in all Westeros. He was made of light and darkness in equal parts. To some he was a hero, to others the blackest of villains."
He is George R.R. Martin's favorite Targaryen. He's called the Rogue Prince not because he's a Menace to society, but because he does what he wants. And a lot of negative things you heard about him were said by people on the council who don't want Daemon to be king because they know he'd get rid of them because he sees through their lies for the "council of leeches" they are. Several reactors really aren't understanding Daemon Targaryen and his complexities. I hope you see it with a rewatch. He loves his brother, and some of his "asshole" moments are specifically to spite Otto Hightower, who is a cunt like Daemon said. Otto literally pimped his daughter out to the king, and Daemon sees he's a snake wanting power for himself. That's why Otto doesn't want Daemon to be king, because he knows he'd be fired as Hand.
Also, Daemon loves his family. Like, he really loves his family. He's only looking out for his brother and the reason why he got mad at the end is because he's choosing to side with Otto Hightower and send Daemon away. Like he said "to the Vale, to the City Watch, anywhere but by your side."
Also, the show didn't show this because it was cut, but the reason why Daemon wasn't there at the Council of 101 was because he was rallying troops in support of his brother's claim.
So yeah, Daemon is a lot more complex than a lot of people online have been making him out to be. I've even seen some people comparing him to Joffrey lmao, like no.
Also, don't forget some of Daemon's tender moments like when he's at the orgy, he's not even participating in said orgy. He bought it out for his men, but he's not participating. I don't know if you noticed, but there's a specific shot where he's drinking in silence and you can tell he's mourning. When Daemon said "we all mourn in our own way" that was very true. I've known several people who lose a family member and they go out drinking or on a binge. It's not necessarily healthy, and Daemon is obviously not well adjusted. He had to be pressured into a speech by Mysaria, and we never specifically hear him say "Heir For A Day."
Matt Smith the actor has said in interviews that Daemon loves his family and would never hurt them. And that when he supposedly said "Heir For A Day," that Daemon, in his own truthful blunt way, didn't exactly mean it in a bad way. He's just too honest, that's why the council of leeches don't want him. If you have an honest king with the capacity to mete out necessary punishment, they can't control him like they do Viserys.
Sorry for the essay lol, just love me some Daemon and he's been getting way too much Hate. I've read the books so I definitely came into it picking apart some of the stuff yall missed because you didn't know to look for it, but I promise if yall rewatch this episode in your own time and look for some of the details I pointed out, you'll see what I mean.

He’s going to be a fantastic character to watch and I think Matt Smith will do amazingly. @@rahmatmanurung8133 I've seen several reactions and almost all of them dislike Daemon, so yeah, he's getting a lot of hate. But I'm glad, more people really see him as what he really is.
I loved how they started the episode teasing us slowly with the theme song, and then hit us at the end with it. Let's go
Right! The motifs throughout the episode with the melody really add to the reveal of the full composition. Love when films being motifs of themes back in a way. Obviously we only really get to experience this during sagas/franchises but it’s always such a treat for movie score fans!
Matt Smith was amazing as Daemon! And really, all of the casting was good in my opinion.
Daemon Targaryen is my all time favourite character from A song of Ice and Fire especially his Dragon Caraxes the Blood wyrm
He's not a good character but at the same time he's not an evil character he's very morale grey but love's he's brother Viserys and Rhaenyra
Rhaenyra's Dragon is called Syrax a female
King Viserys only had one dragon in his life and that was Balerion the black, he only rode Balerion once and then Balerion died of old age and Viserys never took another dragon after that.
Balerion was one of the biggest dragons out there if not the biggest right? Ughh that’s amazing. I hope we get to see him at some point in live action. Through a flashback or whatever means necessary 😃 thank you for such an insightful comment!

Now at the time of King Viserys rule the biggest Dragon is Vhagar she is currently the oldest living dragon and is bonded to Laena Velaryon at the moment.
Vhagar was one of the three original dragons that allowed Aegon and his sister Wives to conquer westeros.
Aegon with Balerion, Rheanys with Meraxes and Visenya with Vhagar.
Oh dragons can be bonded to a new rider who has Velyrian blood when their old rider has died.

Daemon speaks ill of his wife because he has an unhappy marriage, she is infertile and he cannot have children, his brother Viserys could have annulled their marriage.

Two of the characters in House of Dragon are from Outlander. I thought that was cool to see.

They have to take liberty because in the books just the story is told vaguely, like for example it's just told aemma died in childbirth that's all.
It's written like a history book not from the characters perspective like got books.

I won't spoil anything but in the books this story is being told by a maester to Rhenerya's son which probably won't be in the show because the show will be over before that.
So it's not personal because the maester can only know so much. Like for example measter can tell what daemon did but he can't say what kind of a person daemon was.
That is for the show to explore

@@paroxymal7688 Actually, Archmaester Gyldayn (the writer of Fire and Blood) is alive during the events of Game of Thrones and probably is a gift to Joffrey or Tommen when they became king. (By the way, this archmaester was one of the few survivors of the tragedy of Summerhall, when almost all Targaryen died in 259 d.C, the day Rhaeghar was born).

Daemon is a great fighter and honestly loves his brother and is loyal to him (Viserys is one of the very few people Daemon loves without question); but he is not suited to be king and, I believe, wanted the Iron Throne just because he expected it. Right now, the lords are declaring for Rhaenyra as the heir because they don't trust/want Daemon as the heir, and because Viserys has no other children. Some of them will change their minds pretty quickly if Viserys marries again and fathers sons - just ask Princess Rhaenys. Also, Rhaenyra is young in the show, a teenager of 14 or 15; she is not a fool but she is a spoiled and sheltered girl who doesn't care about the needs of the people or the duties and the responsibilities that come in tandem with the power of any lord, prince, or princess. (and she wasn't made her father/king's cupbearer just because she was a girl, it's a traditional responsibility given a noble child of both genders in Westeros, to accustom them to responsibility while giving them the opportunity to hear lords discuss statecraft and strategy, etc.).
It's so funny watching people react to episode one and they all hate daemon then by episode 8 they all love him.

There’s so much coming out right now 😃😄 and yeah this show is absolutely masterful. From the acting to the score and even the costume design. Every thing is being treated with the upmost attention to detail! What a way to do it

Something I just thought of was that even if she survived and the baby still died, Viserys was bugger either way, as Aemma said she wasn’t having anymore kids after this

You noticed things many channels didn’t notice and I appreciate that as well.
One thing a lot of people seem to misunderstand is that the king had a choice to lose both the child and the wife or attempt to save the child. It was not one or the other it was let them both die or save the child. Ultimately they both died but I think despite how brutal it was trying to save the child was the right thing to do.
Thanks so much for the comment and support, it means so much!! But what you're saying is very true - at the end of the day, it is an impossible choice and honestly, there is no real 'right' answer. Either way, it'd be a devastating loss. What irked us a little was that he never clued his wife in on what was going on - therein lay the cruelty and perhaps the fear of the gravity of his decision that was, ultimately, inevitable. That's why we love this show, it presents us with so many impossible moments that force us to question morals and ethics on multiple levels!

The parallel from rheanerya and her mother convo that said childbirth is the woman's battle in this world. For them to cut back and for between men battles and woman's battles in this time are horrible.

The attempted cesarian was gruesome and just an impossible choice placed on parents way too frequently in those times, whether it was fiction or real life! Uff, hard to watch either way!! But great catch, definitely adds many layers to the scene!

I am not sure how to spell the name they use but the real-life equivalent was Court Physician and the one attending Viserys is bad it seems, his assistant was better and suggested a good idea I think for them at the time, something he should have thought of, seems very slow, and doesn't understand what he is doing with his procedure leading to a bad ending. If I were King I would have him imprisoned and replaced.
So let's talk about, Gold cloaks were way back then, let's talk about the grey scale the King may have, let's talk Darnish guy interested in the princess.
I thought the idea of the Gold cloaks was cool! They are definitely under the radical leadership of Daemon. But I can also see the point of view of purging the town from todo criminals! The thing is where does it stop when you have that kind of power? I loved the potential of how menacing Daemon can be

Oh and reason why the writing was so good in the first 5 seasons of game of thrones is because they ran out of source material from books.

One of the major things the show writers decided not to include.
But they make up a character called the Night King for the TV show anyway.

How is the fact that mothers give birth and that is especially important for a royal family in anyway political or controversial?
Don’t be so quick to judge the hand for sending his daughter to the king’s bedroom. In a medieval society the strength of your position is the only thing that can possibly keep your loved ones safe. If you don’t seek power someone else will. someone who is going to exploit or harm your family in order to strengthen their own.
Well put! To be frank, we were learning how to balance today's society's expectations and moralities vs the medieval ones. We understand why Otto did what he did - it's a ruthless game and they're all going to be playing it regardless, so pulling the punches won't get anyone what they want
