These ships remind me of an Airstream Camper with an 80s vibe. How I would fix them... remove the bulkhead next to the cargo area, make it a two person ship by removing a set of beds and chairs, use the freed up space for lockers and living space upgrades. Make the turret in the back a remote turret for copilot.
The Freelancer Max is one of those ships of my many ships that I will never get rid of although I can see some stiff competition coming with the Zues. When the Freelancers finally get their rework I hope it includes: * A larger windshield (more on par with the Hull series) * Remove the bulkhead and door and combine the area between the main cargo bay and forward cargo bay in the Base and Max. * The DUR and the MIS retain their refinery and missile bays. * Remove two passenger seats and two beds to allow for gally, crew quarters, and component access. * Slightly widen the cargo bay to allow easier access for vehicles. * Make the rear turret more flush with the overhead (basically remove the two beams that come down).
I'm in the same boat with my Max. It was my first "big" ship back in the day so the nostalgia is strong with that one. I recently did my first hauling mission with it. Definitely needs some love, but the Freelancer is what sparked my dream of being a hauler.
@@Boss-zo4lw Actually they were planned as both. The pilot can use it as forward guns, but they also can be controlled by those two seats to cover a bigger area.
Originally I was ecstatic when I bought a Freelancer MIS back in 2015 or something. BUT, about 2 years ago when I really got back into the game to find they totally rebuilt the interior I melted it and got a Connie Andromeda.
You can get max 2scu crates through it which is all youre putting back there you just have to line it up perfectly but i say the same thing it needs a real cargo door
The Mis needs size 4 turrets for the pilot that can also be remote controlled by passengers, with the other turret receiving a size 3 also remote. Military grade components without Military grade capabilities beyond missile deployment is unacceptable. I've held onto it for years, with my only other ship being a tana... they will both one day significantly outperform their brother's in combat... I think their implementation of alien technology is false advertisement.
The Freelancer were good ships for the original design of SC. They have been feature and power crept over the last 10 years and there has been no attempt to update them to keep up with the changing game.
I like the freelancers, not more than the Spirit, but the Max is definitely a proper cargo hauler. But they definitely need more love. Aside from a golden pass, things like the mid session on the Max, that actually limits cargo loading should be revisited.
i remember when the freelancer was on par with the cutlass long long ago when it was tankier and had more hull hp the guns worked and the Mis was a great combat ship now a day there no reason to own any of them sins the cutlass is just flat out better for years now thanks to cig being drake fanboys all I need to say 21 300 hp vs 45 750 hp the freelancer use to have the advantage of haveing 4 size 3 guns gimbaled du to them being on turrets vs 4 size 3 fixed a benefit that got removed whit master mode
You missed 1 critical thing about the DUR and ES compression regarding fuel. The ES has a larger fuel tank, but the DUR can create its own hydro fuel and different hydro fuel grades with its onboard refinery. I think many players run through the DUR and see the room with the refinery. They think it's just something there, but that's its refinery.
I love the recent updates to components on the Freelancers. Three medium shields and another power plant, too. In addition to the two computers that will be useful some day. Emphasizes that blend of sturdiness and high-tech that MISC typically is displayed. I have the MIS & DUR, and can't wait for them to get a Gold Pass.
I love my MAX. I *really* love my MAX. The look and feel of this beast appeals so much that I've been happy to regard its faults as ... idiosyncracies 🙂 That said, I must admit I'm thinking of trading it in for the Zeus CL - despite that limitation you raised on what vehicle each can fit. Why? Because of that central, separated cargo hold which has become a major hassle since cargo handling got physicalised. Sad but true.
I agree with your marks and comments. I would add a few things on the rework. It just needs the interior fixed. move the pilot's seat up closer to the window. the mailbox slot does no favors when flying it. The small room with the docking collar needs the rear door removed or widened, maybe a double door to allow manual loading/unloading of the space, The turret should be replaced with a remote controlled by the co-pilot seat. This gives one of the 3 extra seats a purpose and removes the tracks for the rear turret from getting in the way of the cargo area. I debate whether 2 of the 4 beds should be removed to make better use of the internal space. Outside of that the ship needs a hull hp bump and the vtol added. For the variants performance values and armor should change based on each. Base should have lighter armor and higher performance. The dur should be slower than base but slightly better armor. The Max would be slower than the base with the same armor. The MIS should have much heavier armor making it the slowest of the series and 1 extra cooler, a larger capacitor for all guns and maybe 1 extra remote turret.
Back in 2017, the DUR was my first love of SC because I saw it, not as an explorer, but as an industrial ship for making fuel. Then it was announced than Quantanium was a rock. After a recent rework of my CCU chains, the DUR is back in my fleet because I’m into crafting and the DUR can still make racing thruster fuel. In case I’m interested, it can even fit a hover bike in the back to do some racing of my own. And it has four beds.
I hate to say it but yeah, I've owned every version of the freelancer several dozen times and never kept any. Used to have a soft spot for the MIS, as it came with the Transport - Combo pack back in the old days basically for free. Sadly I think it currently exists as a crucible or something.
A current big with the freelancer series is that if you have crew and if they sit in any of the seats in the cockpit then the pilot loses control of half their functions like moving in and out of navigation mode, jumping into quantum and setting map destinations.
It's my most ancient ship, both because my MIS is my upgraded Kickstarter ship, and because it's been an age since the Freelancer got much of an update. Both I love my tanky little brawler. It's a great ship after a wipe. Especially now with a STV in back. I think when all systems are online the MIS is going to be a great ship. The pilot on main guns, the co-pilot on missiles (especially fun if the pilot and co-pilot have Tobii and can target more than just the front cone), I like to put a mix of Pioneer Is and Rattler IIs on the wings, third seat for the rear turret gunner (now up-gunned to a pair of S3s), and the fourth seat for the Engineer. If you don't need the cargo, put a couple of STVs/UTVs (Soon™) in back, or one with a pair of Pulse hoverbikes.
of the freelancers, the MIS is probably the best option unless you're strictly looking for cargo then go with the MAX. lod it up with all quarrelers, higher capacitor and same range/dmg/speed as omnisky 13:10 sorry, MAX wins by default as the ZEUS-CL doesn't exist.
These are great for early game rentals for making money if you don't buy anything larger than a starter. That central wall between the two cargo spots really sucks now though, with physical loading.
All the way back in 2014, the Freelancer DUR was the first ship I loved. Nowadays, my starter explorer ship has become the Zeus as living quarters seem a lot better but I still keep a Freelancer MAX in my fleet as I love the Freelancer cockpit. I agree that it really needs a rework and hopefully it will bring out better use of the hull or tweak it slightly to make the ships more useable. As others have pointed out, the Freelancers were supposed to be better Cutlasses but, as time went on, the Cutlasses have gone and become a lot better.
I had a Freelancer Max that I exchanged for a C1 Spirit for the best-in-show event, since they fill a similar role for my purposes. I prefer the Max's larger cargo bay door/ramp entry and easy ladder entry near the cockpit. I may swap back to the Max after best-in-show concludes or buy one in-game.
Without that cockpit it would've been a tough pick between my Connie Black and this back in the day. Either way, it really needs a rework for the whole series
Freelancer's should all look like the max. The max advantage should be that it has the cargo space. With Titan suits, there is finally a cool reason for four crew. If only we had military, science, etc. The max can take a Fury and all the other ground vehicles making it a great trailer platform.
Kinda a harsh rating and a tiny bit unfair comparing to the Zeus series when it hasn't been released yet, but the basics are all accurate. It really should shine after a major rework. I will say that the Max is a ship that always makes me smile somehow when I open that massive cargo bay.
So, the cutlass series, freelancer series, spirit series, zeus series are all competors in a similar tier when comparing their similarly priced variants. But component balancing across all them seems off at times. Like the zeus es having the lowest weapon point total, and cargo space. Or the spirit having only 1 size 2 shield, who is supposed to compensate by being the fastest in its class is slower than the cutlass black who also has way more firepower.
I always buy the max and without fail they do an update that resets your home planet and because I log out in and live in the ship it is deleted every single time as its not stowed anywhere, extremely annoying. I have a MIS as my game package ship and I dont use it anymore, hasnt been useful since about 3.5, total waste. I do steal the parts off it and use them on my cutlass though :)
Well, freelancers are bugged (for example, co pilot sitting in his seat locks acces to some options for pilot like mode change or engine/systems switch). Its one of my fav ship, but it has to be fixed.

16:29 VTOL on a Freelancer?? Was that ever a thing or just part of an early teaser video and never implemented? Heck you can easily throw in an URSA and have room to spare for more cargo. The MIS has some serious competition, and you may have forgotten one more big one... the upcoming Zeus MR.
I disagree about the DUR, should end up the best explorer for planets or belts. With the refinery you get infinite HYD, meaning you can explore a location for hours on end without ever needing to refuel, something none of the other explorers can do atm.

For real It needs a real cargo door for the smaller cargo bay inside and just 2 beds to fit something usefull on the other side otherwise i love the ship
You can only see the join button on androids and on desktop or laptop computers. Apple Blocks the join button on youtube because of their beef with google
The only thing I can think is zeus will be a brick to fly but freelancer isn't a heck of a lot better. Now having 4x size 3 guns is effectively better than a dual size 4 in terms of damage ( and maybe variety?) And those cheek turrets can be useful when you gimbal as it "extends" your ability to hit more maneuverable targets. Sadly they are so outdated and poorly designed for 4 people that it needs a serious redesign.
So expectations point to full redesign of the ship to update it? A released ship? Sounds unlikely. I think given recent releases, most we can hope for is increased shield generators, and maybe gun sizes. Then an increase in maneuvering. But, if they increased the size of the missiles, that could go a long long way. A medium size missile boat is missing in game, though the MIS sounds to be down that ally, it needs bigger, 1 size could help a lot, 2 would make it worthwhile.
They have already said the Freelancers will get a rework at some point as they know the AI can not navigate the ship esp if it has cargo and where the modules are located. BUT Remember the guns are meant to actually be turrets, controlled by the two back seats hence why it has 4 seats, youll need a pilots and engineer too, so they are actually a minimum 4-5 man ships one day, you may even want a co pilot and a turreteer, game is getting silly one day lol
These ships remind me of an Airstream Camper with an 80s vibe. How I would fix them... remove the bulkhead next to the cargo area, make it a two person ship by removing a set of beds and chairs, use the freed up space for lockers and living space upgrades. They arent passenger seats, they are to remote control the two side turrets one day, they are turrets not pilot guns, what you see now is temporary.

Freelancers either need a serious discount (the MIS!) or serious upgrading.

Thank you! What does drop a pin mean? I think whatever it is I might call it something else lol
The Zeus will be a problem for a lot of ships! 😅👌🏾
I want to love the freelancers they just look so dated rn
:) I'm sorry, but no, no freelancers for me
So expectations point to full redesign of the ship to update it?
