Hello Pete, just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed your videos. I found the channel last Summer in the days after my son was born and binged on them during the 3 hour feeds and sleep deprivation periods! My son was also unwell during his first few weeks and watching your videos certainly helped alleviate some of the stress so thank you for that and keep up the good work.
This lovely old bus is just down the road from me.. In fact it gave me the inspiration to convert my own double decker 10 years ago which became rather famous for being on amazing spaces. I'm so pleased its being saved!!
Hi Pete, all I can say is good luck with this latest restoration, I know you will do it real justice, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia 👍👍👍👍
What a brilliant channel!! I came here via HubNut's 100K subscribers bus drive. Who knew busses (the classic cars are great to, Oh and Compo but don't tell him) were so much fun. I have binge watched all episodes from No 1. I like the channel so much I bought both T shirts. Pete, you have made Busses both interesting and very entertaining. Thank you.
I remember when I was a kid in the 60s, this bus was in my Matchbox set. It was one of my favorites. I also remember WFIL 56 am radio in Philly had one of these busses for promo purposes. Sometimes they held a contest whereas if you spotted the bus on the road, you could call in with the time and location of the bus and if you called in first, you would win a prize.
Well, this was a gem to stumble across this morning... I lived up the road from this bus, there used to be 10's of Jaguars parked amongst it a long time ago. It seems only in the last 5 years or so vandals have targeted this old RM and is a sad site to see. Makes me happy seeing it possibly running and being fixed up.
Definitely not a fail, getting those lubricants into that engine will help while it sits. My first bike was an old Honda Z 50 J. I'm disappointed in myself for keeping the wheels and throwing the rest away years ago when the engine died.
Fantastic video and a great effort! I'm hugely looking forward to the return visit, and hopefully the festering fluids will have worked their magic. Quite a tall order - an engine of that size sitting with no oil in it for that long. Let's hope!
Like the new exhaust on the wee Grom! I have a small collection of classic Japanese bikes myself. The only Honda is a troublesome CB360G from 1973. I hope you get the RM running again, it was worrying to see so little oil in the sump. I do prefer the RM with the AEC engine. I cut my teeth on a Reliance with the 760 engine.
@Pete And His Bus The CB360G was imported from America with 4500 miles. That's the trouble. It was lying idle too long. The piston rings were seized in the right cylinder. I have had a barrel rebored and oversized pistons to suit. It has a new stator as it wouldn't charge. Hopefully it will be reliable at last, like my Yamahas.
Fantastic video as usual. It was nice to see Tim and it was a bit disappointing that she didn't start. Hopefully in the next episode you will need driving straight out that field!
It's a wise choice to leave it to soak for a few days at least, after sitting for decades. You two achieved plenty that day and got the ball rolling. You left with much more of an idea of the situation.
Honda Monkey bikes….. let the hilarity ensue! I’m quite fancying one of the Skyway Dax copies to cart about on the coach when I’m out and about. Love the Yoshi pipe. Makes the bike sound so much better. E type shopping sounds perilous….. and potentially expensive! Hope you enjoyed the jaunt to Wakey 😁.
Was along bloody way!! I’d only have one of the new monkeys rather than the originals or the DAX. Mine comes with the 5 speed and all the modern teck and it actually feels like a normal bike. The exhaust just makes me laugh all day long 😂😂
Good to see that you all are trying to save and get that bus going Roll on for the next episode. And many thanks for the black t shirt. They are fab!! You could get a red t shirt to match those buses....just saying
Brilliant episode Pete.. Lord Barrington is a Routemaster Jedi! Keep going RM843 deserves to live again! Your efforts to get that iconic AEC engine to start must have been frustrating; but I am hopeful that between the two of you .. she will eventually come to life! Look forward to the next episode. This is one Red RM that I am totally in favour of!! Just need a few more RML’s back in their intended Green livery be it LT/LCBS or NBC Green!!!
Great video again, my big regret was not buying an e-type that was for sale in a dealer in West London in the '60's once owned by Neal Cole the famous golfer, I had the money but chickened out thinking it was too flash for me.😂😂😂
Crazy idea: Put a ratchet strap around the flywheel, with the hook gripping the teeth, wrap it around a couple of times, and use a car to pull it back out. Turn it into a pull start :P You need to get the starter off first, ofcourse
Good work - a large number being restored. Would you say lend a couple to say Crick Tramway, or the transport museum in Ipswich so they can be enjoyed for periods when they aren’t needed.
That was a great video. I like the variation with the monkey bike and the E type. I'm glad you are persevering with the abandoned bus. When faced with such a mammoth task, it makes a big difference to have someone to help you with it and all know Lord Barrington is the routemaster whisperer... Keep up the good work 👍
We want more!! Cracker of an episode. Can't believe ABB got the job of overhauling an AEC In 1994! A fascinating tidbit right there. I'm guessing London Buses were sending out overhaul work by then and that 590 was considered viable for rebuild even though they had already been fitting modern engines to them. For once, an anticipated UA-cam video exceeded my expectations. Wish I was there to lend a hand. You're a lucky guy.
Great video.. loved the multiple features, really looking forward to see the E Type once restored.. You guys are pretty amazing working on the bus in that weather.. shame you couldn't get it running this time but for sure if you guys cant get it running no one can.. nice to see lord Barrington not being so camera shy.. well done guys great effort hopefully you will succeed next time. Robb Torremolinos Spain
If it’s just to start the bus putting a splash of diesel fuel in the cylinders overnight or longer, may help to help free the cylinder rings. Also disconnect the prop shaft so your not turning the gearbox that may help reduce the drag on the engine
Hi 👋🏻 Pete. That was absolutely awesome 👏🏻 Lord Barrington it a godsend 😊 Hopefully he’ll feature more on Pete & his bus lol 😆 Glad Compo was ok with your new monkey bike 👍🏻
I wouldn't have called the original exhaust quiet, for a really quiet bike one needs an ex MP LE Vellocette 'noddy' bike, the whine from the gearbox and shaft drive made more noise than the exhaust. They had a lovely smooth 200cc water cooled flat twin.
I've been following this since episode 1 with great enthusiasm and sincerely thank you for this series - it's brill!. However I have noted in recent episodes the focus on the bus restoration is shifting away, which is a shame and watching other content is of interest but not the same as as the expected restoration work in my opinion. I was looking forward to this episode (sad youtuber I am :-) ) when I received a notification this episode had been released, but disappointed no progress reported on the restoration project - don't get me wrong still an enjoyable and interesting episode but not the expected restoration content.
might be quicker to do an engine swap (even if it is one of the later IVECO etc ones for now) and rebuild the AEC in the dry, at least you will find if it needs machining. You need one of the Ford open back trucks Chiswick used to send out round the garages with spare engines in the back for those that were changed mid-overhaul.

That would be really something to see RM 843 restored from the very sorry state to a pristine condition Routemaster with original plates. If so, look very much forward to end vehicle.
