  • This time on Pete And His Bus, Lord Barrington and I go back to RM843 to try to finish this job once and for all. As always it proves to be harder than we though. Will we get this poor bus running and driving? Find out now! The feature car this month is a lovely Series 2 Jaguar E type.

    A special thanks go to:
Richard, the owners of RM843 and Lord Barrington Himself!

@@charlesallanstewart-kl2opThis is a great way to scrap an RM. Burn it out, let it cool, and hose out the debris. Then get to work with the torch. All metal exposed. Pull it to pieces with the claw. Quite clean scrap

@@charlesallanstewart-kl2op Yes, this is the way they used to scrap buses and trams. Burn them out first.
At Barnsley when breaking up RMs in the 1990s the burning was frowned upon. But there was still preparatory torch work to cut the upper structure and weaken the floor before the claw went in.
Those RMs were built tough to be rebuilt. Getting them through the shredder was not as easy as other buses.

What an achievement chaps. The next installment of the RM843 saga is eagerly awaited - I do hope the owners will go the whole distance and restore it properly, or failing that sell it as a work in progress to someone who will. We've lost too many of these old girls already - we really need to keep the remaining viable examples running and in use for something.

I'm glad you didn't edit out the drama in getting it started too much, so we could share in the tension, although you had given away the outcome -not that I mind as I love the thumbnail.
That engine would have hardly run since it's 1994 reconditioning. It's almost a new engine really hence its excellent sound. It exceeded my expectations though. It sounded so healthy.

Great to know that this fine old lady will be preserved. It could so easily have gone the other way with some cretin setting fire to her, or causing yet more brainless damage. It is a shame that the number plate rapists have stolen her original plate. Not a priority at the moment, but quite a few robbed RMs have had their original VRMs restored to them, even after years with replacement numbers. I expect WLT843 is on some w#*#er's Porsche or Mercedes by now!

Did Lord Barrington explain why it took so long to start? I guess it all has to get up to temperature, sticky injectors, air locks? What else is there in such a basic engine?

Driving one of the flattest cars to visit one of the tallest vehicles got me laughing out loud right away!
This bus oozes liquids, but history as well. ❤ the future is bright.

It was a lupanar before it ended in the fields or what, what is this awful interior decoration of a coach bar lol.
At one time it was the typical souvenir from England, my cousin had brought me when i was child a red bus like this one from Corgy toys, it is wisely stored in a box, yes the miniatures are pretty but they are dust nests.
For me these buses are really iconic of your country, good vehicle restoration to you in any case =)
Have a nice day , from South France !

@@jamesfrench7299 it was looked after and garaged at Stockwell after sale to timewarp TV so the engine was doubtless supplied and fitted by London general for timewarp.

    Pete
Sorry I didnt add an encouraging comment while you did the last two episodes of hard work which could have gone nowhere at all.
I play with old motorbikes and was with you all the way.
    Probably a waste of time.
    Probably a waste of effort.
    Probably a waste of money.
    Then.
    Chuggitty chugg splitter pop.........
    Then nothing.
    Then...........
    The same.
    But then.....
    Nothing.
    But finally
    Varrrroooommchuggitychuggityytickticktick.
I was willing this to work and after you disappointed me a couple more times...
Was dancing about like an idiot who has forgotten that the Spice Girls best times are behind them.
    Sir, I salute your indifatigability.
    So, what next?

  • @danw1955

You definitely have the right people working on this old girl. I was hoping the starter didn't crap out before you actually got it started! It was dicey there for a bit until it started picking up cylinders one after the other. Those old buses must have a monster of a flywheel considering how long the engine takes to coast down to idle!😉

    • @PeteAndHisBus
      @PeteAndHisBus  Рік тому +1

The starter was actually replaced 7 years ago and because it was wired in incorrectly it had never turned so pretty much new. So with double the batteries we knew she’d do it!

I don't think one could just abandon a modern diesel for decades and it will start with just a bit of coaxing, all the electronic controls would have disintegrated years ago. A lot of work and many cans of worms to get through on her before back to her former glory.
