    Who manufactured the barrel? What cartridge are you thinking about chambering? lol forward to project! Thanks

    HELLUVA deal on that powder. Wish I had access to that! I’ve had great results with Superformance in several different cartridges. I’ve got a pretty good 30.06 hunting load using the tried and true Hornady 150 grain Interlock, and I’ve also loaded it up for my 6 and 6.5 creedmoor target loads. Several people I’ve talked to don’t like it, and say it’s too temperature sensitive, but I guess I’ve never really had to shoot in conditions that varied enough to affect it that much. I’ve never tried it in my .270, and if I didn’t have such a tack driver of a load using IMR4350 and 145 grain ELD-X, I might have had to try it out.

    Just did a rebarrel project myself. Took a 300 WSM to a 7mm SAUM. Good luck bro!

      I'm on the 300WSM wagon now. Got a reamer made by JGS based on my dummy round using a 210 Berger VLD seated long like the PRC cartridges. Also opened up the chamber 0.002 to obviate early clickers. It's a Brux 8 twist barrel and so far it's been greatly impressive

    Great meeting and talking with you too. And, as you know, Superformance is outstanding in 270 Win, 280 Rem, 280AI, 300WSM. Best velocities and accuracy for me in all of those with certain bullets, especially the lighter weight Barnes. By the way, I was wrong on my 280AI velocity. I told you 3200fps with that 139 LRX and Superformance. I checked my data. It's 3300fps. I'm well satisfied with that and the 3/8" groups. I've got 150 ballistic tips over superformance in my 280 Rem, 150 TSX over that powder in my 300WSM. And as I was telling you when we met, I loaded the 136 Federal TLR (basically the terminal ascent) over a full case of superformance in those Federal primed pulled cases I got from American Reloading based on your recommendation. That's the load at 3200fps that shot two half inch 3 shot groups about an hour before we met. This is one of my stainless T3x Tikka Lite rifles in 270 Win.
    Today I shot my first hand loads in 708, a Tikka T3x compact with the 20" barrel. I loaded the 140 Nosler ballistic tips in 1x fired Norma brass, Fiocchi large rifle primers and Vihtavuouri N540:
    41.0 grains - 2680fps
    41.5 - 2744
    42.0 - 2761
    42.5 - 2787
    43.0 - 2837
    VV web page indicated 42.7 grains max with COL at 2.740. I seated the bullets at 2.800 as Nosler's manual showed. I don't have dies for 708 yet so I just used my 308 neck bushing die with the 310 busing, then over a 7mm turn mandrel. Test chambered them and all did fine, no need to full length size. I used the RCBS match master 308 die to seat the bullets. Worked out fine. Hardly any runout. I did order an RCBS matchmaster 708 seater die today though. I'll just keep using my 308 bushing dies for sizing, either neck or FL, whatever the brass needs.
    Your barrel is a #3 or #4 contour K&P 4 groove 9 twist, steel comes from Germany. There's a youtube channel, I think, long range shooters of utah or similar. I was talking to either one of them or one of their rifle builders and they were telling me that someone had a record at a mile or so and won it with a K&P barrel. The owner's name is Ken. He made barrels for HS Precision for 3 or 4 decades. The man knows what he's doing. My proof is my first experience with a K&P cut-rifled barrel which is on my cartridge design - my 270-7PRC (yea baby). Same contour as your barrel, 8 twist, 24" long, 4 groove. 170 Berger VLD at 3230fps. Nothing over an inch and I've yet to test any groups yet. These are all different charge weights with 3 powders. I'm waiting on my McMillan stock to complete the rifle before I go any further. Currently sits in an MDT chassis system. This 270-7PRC beats a 7PRC with a 180 Berger VLD at 3000fps and the 195 EOL at 2900fps drift, drop, energy (if I did the Berger website entries correctly, pretty sure I did).
    I ordered the barrel you have specifically for a 280AI to finish at 24". I have already sent an email ordering more. Out of all the cartridges I've loaded for the past 34 years, there are 2 that have made me say WOW - the 270-7PRC and the 280AI. That said, the 270 Winchester was my first, 2nd, 3rd deer rifle and will likely always remain my favorite. I've had at least 10; factory, and special built. Currently own 5 made by Tikka, and one built. I sold a couple last year I had built. Tagged 20+ whitetail, mule deer, and 1 pronghorn with them. Time for someone else to enjoy them.

      Where are you getting Superformance load data for 270 and 280AI? I have both but don't see any load data.

    • @derekmcmurry
      @derekmcmurry 3 місяці тому +2

      @@texpatriot8462 Barnes data for 270 and the 129 LRX. That's a starting point for any bullet in 270 regardless of make, mostly due to the monolithics taking less powder than cup core bullets so adjust accordingly
      For the 280AI, I started with my 280 Remington. I didn't see any load data for this but for a few decades now and developing loads on my own using reference points it's nearly a perfect parallel. If a 270 Win has a 130 grain bullet I've used that data for the 280 Remington with a 140 grain bullet with a lower starting point. I use same bullet make when I do this. For example, I tested Superformance with a 130 Nosler ballistic tip in 270 Win. It can take quite a bit of powder. I'd have to check my book but I think it got to 62.0+ grains with no pressure in new brass. I then used a 140 Nosler ballistic tip in 280 Rem and started 1 grain less powder and worked up. Turned out max charge was nearly identical as the 270/130 combo but slightly more powder.
      I then used the 280 Rem data and converted to 280AI. As you know, it takes more powder. BUT, since I was using the 139 LRX, a monolithic, I expected max charge to take place sooner. Curiously I don't think it did. My current 280AI load with the 139 LRX is 1x fired Norma brass, 210M primer, 63.0 grains of Superformance at 3300fps. And I'm not at max charge but extremely satisfied with the ES, SD, groups.
      For what it's worth, I did begin handloading in the 80s. I worked at Jensen's Custom Ammunition in the early 90s and they taught me handloading techniques for competition shooting which is overkill for hunting. They also taught me conversions and ratios cartridge to similar cartridge when there was no load data available. Then, the long range hunting craze started, that I saw, about 20 or so years ago, not that this was my goal, but I knew these guys took their handloading seriously as well as their rifles.
      Respectfully, if you are in a camp that will only use what a load book or website indicates to use I recommend you stick with that. What i have learned is all of these bullet and powder and equipment books and webpages are GUIDES. I don't use them as absolutes. If I did I would have never found MOST of my best handloads in MOST of my rifles - which are over and sometimes well over published max data because my barrel and chamber and brass and primers in many cases are different but obviously my chamber and barrel are for sure. Load data that is published is what THAT company found in THEIR components during their testing. I will always use their guides but that's all they are to me, just starting points. I have also found that in 2 of my rifles, published max data was well over what my rifles could take. Example, in one of my 270s with a 130 Barnes TSX my max load was a full 2 grains under Barnes' manual for Reloder 19. Thus, I do stick with low starting charges

      Hey I just heard of Fin Fur and Feather a week ago. Oddly, I ran in to a couple guys AT VANCE OUTDOORS, and they drove up from WV looking for large rifle primers. We struck up a conversation. Turns out I had some Fiocchi on hand so I sold him 3000. He was thrilled. He'd been looking for half a year or more. They were the ones that told me about Fin Fur and feather

    I’ve had good luck with 130gr Tipped Gameking 6.5 Creedmoor Superformance loads. Not as fast as book but not far off…accuracy was outstanding though. I’ve never seen published load data (other than Barnes) using Superformance in 270 win.

    • @derekmcmurry
      @derekmcmurry 3 місяці тому +2

      If I recall correctly, that's where I got it for my 270 Win. I think they had it for the 129LRX but I found best success in MULTIPLE 270s - all Tikkas, with the 130 TTSX. I settled on 59.5 grains, Winchester or Starline brass, 210M primers. All of the Tikkas have around a 22" barrel and get 3320fps or close. I had a 270 with a 24" Krieger barrel that was at 3360, and I sold my 25.5" Hart barreled Ruger M77 Mark II 270 Win. I was shocked but the fastest clocked in it was 3396. Still have the chrono pic and 2 range workers saw it. I think I tested up to 61.5 grains, all safe, but accuracy really dropped substantially once I got to 60.0 grains.
      As far as using it in a 280 Rem and the 280AI, I adjusted charges accordingly with a SWAG technique I'm fond of with the 140 grain bullet weight and it worked out extremely well.

    I put a new barrel on a old 721 Remington action it was a 30-06 and the barrel wasn’t any good now I has a 280 AI barrel on it in a Shilens with 1-8 twist and 26” long I loaded some shells and shot it about month ago with some 154 grain sst to break it in and it is shooting good for not being broken in yet

      It looks like a barrel blank to me. It will have to be threaded and chambered.

    • @derekmcmurry
      @derekmcmurry 3 місяці тому +1

      No. It's a pre-turned blank. That's how they typically come. It has to be cut, crowned, chambered, threaded for whatever Alabama Reloader chooses but I strongly encouraged him to go 280AI.
