as a carpenter may i just say you did an amazing job and let me tell you that the best tip you gave was the cleaning and sanding the cabinet door and the 2 coats of primer because like you said, its laminate and paint wont stick very good on laminate
So by sanding it a little bit and doing 2 coats of primer, it really helps for the paints to stick on the cabinet
Great job
What about the streaks from the paint brush strokes? How do we avoid that from happening?
@@JimmyLaw maybe a roller? I'm sure you can use a smaller one for the inside.
michele lanni Wouldn’t it make sense to sand and prime the door before putting the frame on? I’m not a carpenter, so I’m literally asking, not being sarcastic at all....
@@JimmyLaw find a paint that sets reasonably flat.. I like Sherwin Williams pro classic. Then roll it on with a really short nap roller, or even a foam roller to get a nice finish.
@@larabellg8425 Excellent point. I hadn't realised that since this is not my line of work either.
I just got a $12,000 estimate to redo my kitchen. I am going to give this a try first.
Thanks👍
How did it go?
@@susanhenry6834 I’m curious too
Same...
Very nice work, it's nice to see someone reonvating without a sludge hammer!!! Thanks for keeping it real for those of us not made of money. R
THANK YOU FOR THIS!! I thought there was no way I’d be able to update my laminate cabinets without being able to afford new ones. This is amazing. Can’t wait to try this.
As a designer/builder, I appreciate your hard work. My suggestion would be for you to use a roller for cabinet doors. It makes for a much smoother finish and no brush marks.
was just about to say
Great job! I’m so pleased to see someone work cleverly with what they have, instead of trashing the old and buying all new.
This was EXACTLY what I looking for! Thank you! We just bought a home that the cabinets are in good shape, but they aren’t the style I like. I can’t wait to start!!!
Im doin this as soon as my plumbing gets fixed lol
Looks good.
Only suggestion is when you spread the glue when adding the trim you can get a really strong bond by spreading the glue with a brush in both the door and the back of the wood. This will hold it over time as moisture causes the wood the change shape.
That said the nails will help it stay in place.
Thanks for the video.
Nice idea! Another thing you can do with older cabinets while doing this kind of project is use bondo for patching cracks and chips, etc. it’s very strong and sandable, and since you’re painting it anyway it’s a great way to cover damage. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
I think UA-cam is sleeping on you as a creator. This is a fantastic video. I really appreciate your creativity and attention to detail! 💜
I did this once in a house I used to own, but instead of using expensive 1/4" poplar, I bought 1/4" luan plywood (basically thin mahogany plywood) and cut it into 2" strips and used that instead. The trick is that you do have to putty up the edges a lot to keep it from looking like you just glued plywood to your doors, but it sands up really nice if you have a belt sander.
After searching DIY video after video, everything I found yours to be exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you so Much!!!
Simple and easy to understand.
You're a life saver ❤
You are welcome 😊 Im glad I could help
Absolutely inspirational! We just bought an old house and I was feeling overwhelmed after watching some other videos. I'm so excited after seeing YOUR video! It finally seems doable! Much love from Wisconsin! ❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing this information...sometimes the professionals who give you tips, videotape or share is if you already have some common knowledge of this process
This by far was the BEST demonstration EVER!!! Thank you so much
I did all of my kitchen cabinets with slats from old window blinds. You can't tell they didn't come that way.
Like the 2” wood blinds?? If so did you use wood filler on the sting holes?
Genius!
Thanks so much!!! Not I’m going to be on the look out for some for free or cheap!!! I’m on a super budget. But the old is so depressing
@goofyfoot2001 Brilliant! I need to see how that turned out!
Yes I want to see!
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you! I have a house that’s needs a lot of work ... you just helped with the budget ! Thank you !!🙏
This is awesome. I've been wanting to remodel my kitchen but my husband recently passed away & it took all the money I saved to pay all those bills. This will help me so much in starting what we had wanted. Thank you, I can use all the ideas I can get.
My condolences and prayers to you and your family during this time.
Ms. Nikki, you don't know how long I been looking for something like this. My home is old and you should see the cabinets they made out of old panel wood. Well I had been trying to figure out how to redo my kitchen on a budget and this is the idea I had but men were telling me I couldn't do it. I needed to just buy an entire new kitchen which would cost almost 40,000 at lowes. I said no and kept looking and now I will transform my kitchen as you have shown me how. Thank you so much. I wish I knew people in person to teach me how to use tools, I'd be doing so much more.
Looks great. Thanks for showing this old girl how to do it herself!!
You’re welcome
You did a great job! For all you DIY’ers most cabinets are bevel or have rounded edges (mine have a big drop) I suggest to bring in wood a little to match right before it curves down (right at edge before slope). It’s what we had to do and so far looks really good! The final out come is dramatic for this video! 👍🤩
Omg this it the comment I was looking for thank you... Mine are beveled
Nice job! I will be doing mine the same way. Really like the shaker idea. Great straight to the point presentation.
I have been working on my kitchen since last summer after watching you refurbish those cabinets that’s what I will try on my cabinets. Thank you
The cabinets look brand new-a great idea in update. Btw, lovin the haircut. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for the awesome idea! I have been looking for a a way to update my outdated cabinets. This will be perfect. Thanks again!!!
I have scoured the net looking for a cheap way to update our laminate cabinets which are in perfect condition but ugly, plain and outdated. This is exactly the solution I was looking for. Thank you!
I have exacly the same doors. This looks so easy. Thank ypu for showing us how to do this project. God bless you.
This is the BEST kitchen cabinet upgrade I've found. We are buying a manufactured home new, but with an all-white kitchen, which to me is out-dated. I plan to add natural wood strips to the white faces for an earthy accent. Thanks!
Looks good. I did something similar on a mantle that I built. What looks great is finding a half-round trim of the same depth as your shaker strips. lining the inside with the half-round gives it a smoother transition into the cabinet face and bit of a fancier look. If the cabinet door is bigger you can add a center strip to break it into two trimmed "windows"
im so impressed how supposed unprofessional carpenters, handy people and creative DIYers can make and remodel most home related things and handle power tools like pros.....very impressive.
New Subscriber here. OMG!!! I am so happy that I have found your videos. I've been wanting to redo my old cabinets, but with two kids in college, money is to tight for thousands of dollar kitchen redo. Sis You are a lifesaver.
Wish we could’ve found your channel earlier before we renovated our kitchen. Good tips :). Thanks for sharing
Thank you for showing this. I now have hope for my outdated kitchen cabinets!!! Thank you for making it simple.
Amazing! What a fabulous idea to repurpose and reuse and save money in the process! Thank you for sharing your wonderful talents! ❤️
WOW! I am sooo Glad I came across this video. So beautiful and affordable. Thanks so much for sharing.
Yessssss! I’m SO GLAD I found this video (and heck yes I subscribed). I have been trying to find a solution for our awful cabinets and this is ITTTT!!! Can’t wait to surprise my hubs when he gets home from deployment ❤️🔥
Oh this hurts. Oh how I wish I had seen this video before I did my cabinets. Great job!
SAME HERE!!
Did you end up spending a lot of money? Or did not sand down properly/used primer & thus paint did not adhere properly? Just wondering. I want to update mine but haven't gotten around to it.
Neesie......thank you for sharing your expertise in an easy to understand and follow video. The cabinets came out wonderful. I am in the process of purchasing a condo to flip and this peice of brillance is sure to help put more $$$$ to the bottom line! Definately subscribing to watch more of your skills and tips. Cheers!
Thank you so much for this video, my husband and I have been wanting to change our cupboard doors to shaker style and now we can!
Fantastic transformation! Added thousands of $$ in value to your mom's house.
Love this! I think, when I do this, I’m going to bevel the corners for a bit of a better look. It’s easy to do with the miter saw she used
I’m so glad I ran across your video! I had been wanting to update my laundry room, which has the same type of cabinets that were in your mom’s kitchen, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money! Love your idea of adding stiles and turning them into a shaker style. The finished product is gorgeous! Thank you for such a great and economical way to upgrade cabinets! God bless you!!
I have the exact same cabinets and in the same condition 😬. Never thought they could be this gorgeous! So glad I found this video and am subscribing. 😁
me too the 70s were a tough time for decor
Looks amazing! Degreasing, sanding and priming is key! 👍🏽
wow! I will be doing this in a few weeks! We have laminate kitchen cabinets in our condo we're updating to resell and honestly it's been giving me a lot of stress thinking about spending all the $$ on new cabinets. But I love DIY projects and am totally willing to take this on!
Great work and technique to save the existing cabinet. Nice!
awesome. I am aboit to reno my kitchen, thank god I came across your video becasue I now have confidence to go fourth...Many thanks and a huge thumbs up
The white cabinets and beautiful granite has always been my favorites. However, lately I've been loving the look of the darker cabinets. Your mom's kitchen, from my view, looked beautiful just as it was. I think you said the cabinets were old and had some wear, though. I can understand why she would want a makeover. You did a great job of painting them. I wish I were talented like this!
Are you sure you weren't looking at her kitchen cabinets, not her mom's? The dark cabinets in the back of the video aren't her mom's.
Thanks for the tips! Have the old cabinets from 1976, real birch, but I like that Shaker look. Gonna try it! Diana (Olympia, Washington)
That was wonderful. I would have never thought of that. How to change those cabinets was one of the best ideas I have seen.
This is awesome. You made me feel ok about buying this house that’s got some seriously ugly outdated cabinets, but it’s the only house in our price range in our area. I thought I was just gonna have to live with these 1970s fake wood cabinets for at least a year until we could afford new cabinets, but now I know I can just prime them and paint over them and make them look decent!!!!!!!!! Yeah!
You did a great job! I am actually doing this in my kitchen. I was not prepared for the problem I am having finding new hardware. My old cabinets had hinges on the outside of the cabinet door and face. Well, adding the wood made the cabinet door not level with the cabinet face.....now the hunt is on for hinges but I love the way the new cabinet doors look. Thanks for the great idea.
I wanted to let you know that I did this very thing to my 70’s cabinets and my realtor said it increased my kitchen price by 15k! I did the work myself and used $500 in material. Thank you for showing me how to do this.
That is one of the nicest work benches I have ever seen. Great video.
Oh this looks great Miss Nessie… keep doin your thang. Love this love this love this… 🖤
Awesome! You just saved me buckets of money that i dont have. A genuine thank you.
thank you for your content, I have the same cabinets and my wife and I will do this soon.
Oh my gosh! I am so happy that I found you! I was just telling my husband that I wanted to do this with our kitchen cabinets. I am totally doing this!
Great job. I'll be following your example for my kitchen and main bathroom! Thanks.
Oh girl, you did what I was looking for Thank you .. you are a smart girl good luck with your mom's project because I have same project what a great video
Awesome job and you made it look to easy! Im ready to start mine now 🤗❤️
Thank you for sharing! Im looking at a potential flip property that has those same old cabinets. This gave me exactly what I needed to keep from completely replacing them.
Thanks, Neesie! I've been looking for just this video!
This is exactly what I was thinking about doing. I'm sure it turned out well.
Thank you for the video. I am remodeling my mobile home and was just about to purchase new cabinets. My husband and I have already sanded and primed the existing cabinets. We will apply paint today when they dry.
I have been planning to do this very thing! So glad I found your video cause now I know it will look good. Thank you so much!
70’s hinges are so pretty & well made!
OMGness!! This is the exact video I have been looking for!! Job well done and thanks so much for such wonderful job on this kitchen! :-)
Cleaning hard were use dish soap prefer dawn 1/4 cup salt 1/2 cup of water mix well soak hardware brush off and dry and shine then paint or no paint your preference God bless young lady outstanding job
I love this idea 💡 Thanks for saving me some big money!
Yes! You are genius! Thank you for creating this tutorial! ❤️
Girl, you are a genius! That looks fabulous!
Thanks ❤️
I have a hundred year old house and I did this. Cost me under 100.00! Thanks so much for the video!
Awesome!! You’re so welcome
@@NeesieDoesIT Does the wood over hang the cabinets or does it fit flush? Thanks for the video will be doing this soon
Oh my gosh....thank you for this video! This is exactly what I am attempting to do on my cupboards. I put the first coat on a couple of drawers tonight, to see how it will look. I bought a high gloss white paint but it doesn’t seem to be very shiny. Maybe a top coat will make it glossy? What did you use? I had already planned on doing trim of some kind around the front, just like you did. So thank you - this video saved me from probably screwing it all up!
I used sherwin William's emerald urethane. 2 coats 4 hours apart. No need for top coat. I did 1 coat of super grip primer 1st (after degreaser & denatured alcohol) hit me up if you want pics!
:) I check out your video sometimes. I do a lot of the same stuff but its just nice seeing other diy
Holy moly.....HOLY MOLY! This was exactly the kind of video I was looking for! Thanks
Thank you for making such a detailed & informative tutorial❣️
Great Job ! I will be updating my contractors cabinets with this look. Glad I found your video.
For those worried about brush marks there is a product called Flotrol that you mix into the paint so it flows smoothly. You can also have Lowes / Home Depot cut the wood for you for free. Im so worried I will screw it up, even though it looks so easy .
I bought a cheap Weber home decor sprayer & it worked great!
Great idea..Now I want have to replace all my cabinets.
Nice job. Looks great. Just a heads up, the side pieces are called stiles and the top and bottom pieces are called rails. Keep up the good work.
Nice! And so is the completed kitchen.
I would recommend changing hinges and door knobs to match. It will make a total difference. You can find cheap cabinet hardware online.
I dont own a house or have any idea why UA-cam shared this with me but you did a really nice job. Thanks for the great video.
Looks fabulous! My house was built in 1957. My kitchen has the scalloped trimming...ugh so ugly. Haha.
Very nice work, and very economical upgrade!
.
I watched your video. you did a great job. Im on a budget and this will help me update some household projects thank you so much love it. Beverley Hunter from Connecticut Your Mom has wonderful Daugther
Just what I was looking for! Cant wait to try it!!
Yah I’m glad this could help you
Great video, thank you for the post, cabinet door looks amazing !!!
I love your idea and what’s more, it’s very pretty.👍🥰
Large paint sticks cut to size work too, I did it. Try to find them without measuring tape stamped on them.
Amazing inexpensive way to update cabinets. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks for sharing this. I just bought a house and damn sure dont have the money to redo the cabinets....its veneer ..but I was told I cant paint them ..but this is great
I used JAVA Gel Stain espresso color, just cleaned and lightly sanded cabinet doors without removing them off the hinges. Quick and easy, looks good.
Thank you thank you thank you. I thought it might be that and you proved 100 percent correct. Thanks for doing this. I will start this project tmrw!!!!
Thank you for making such a straight forward video. Amazing and doing ❤️
You killed it with this video thank you
I did this in a bathroom Reno. The power grab glue and Brad nailing is a great pointer. Thanks. One suggestion I have is to fill the outside edges so the door edges look finished. Then go over the topcoat paint with a white foam roller to remove brush strokes in the paint.
If no one told you how great this is, they sleeping. i have been wanting to do this for ages.
This is exactly what I was looking for!! You did a great job and great video! They look amazing!!
I painted mine already. I am going to take them down and redo like you did here.
OMG!!This the video I have been looking for for so long. Thank you!!
