I got my 10/22 in 1992. Sharp as a tack. I have never used a scope. In 1992 I was 25yo. My buddy Gary (RIP) and I went out to the abandoned trestle over the West Fork of the Trinity River in Arlington, Texas. We always got a brick of 500 rounds every Friday. The trestle was about 50’ above the water. I never had a problem shooting Water Moccasins right in their heads as they were swimming.
Back in the 90's using a 10/22 I would smeer Sweet Orange Marmalade on a target and wait for the YellowJackets to show up. At 15 yards Iron Sights it would be 1 shot for 1 kill.
A target model Ruger w/target barrel vs a standard Savage w/standard barrel. "Savage was more accurate & consistent". Sounds like a pretty good trigger to me!
I'm not saying that it is whiny,, but it sounds like he is trying to make excuses as to why his rifle is better. the magazines,😢, the trigger, 😢, it has a better scope, 😢, it a wash.
About 14 years ago I built a 10/22 target. It has a Clerke bull barrel, Volquartson trigger group and a Fajen full adjustable target stock. With Wolf match ammo it will consistently shoot dime sized groups at 75 yards. Find the ammo your rifle likes and the groups shrink.
Dare to be different!! The A22 is my tree rat destroyer. i as well can not stand the accu-trigger. This is my first semi-auto in 22lr and i have to say im enjoying my choice. im not a target shooter, but the bunnies' and the bushy tails dread my Savage. enjoyed the video...
I’ve owned and still own couple 10/22s, one is the all weather and the other is the Performance Center Competition, both great shooting rifles. I’ve also owned the heavy barrel target you were shooting in this video and for years I tried every ammo you could buy and couldn’t get consistent groups with it and after lots of research and talking to different shooters in the know I found out that these rifles do not like having a free floated barrel with one bolt connecting stock to frame, any heat in the barrel change point of impact, if you’ll notice when Josh was shooting it after couple groups it was wondering all over. A simple test is wrap electrical tape around barrel three inches or so from the end of stock and try it. My Performance Center Competition has two bolts connecting stock to frame, it shoots lights out with a free floated barrel. My two cents, great video Josh.
I’ve heard you aren’t supposed to free float 10/22’s because of the way the barrel mates with the receiver and it causing “barrel droop”. Something about the steel barrels especially the heavy’s and aluminum receivers not holding up.
My opinion: I'd MUCH rather see you shoot each gun with a 5 round group, with 5 DIFFERENT ammo types/ brands. Every 22 shoots/ likes different ammo, and this only proved which one liked THIS ammo best, NOT which is more accurate ;)
Having spent several years shooting small-bore competitively, I MUCH prefer the way he did this test. It illustrated how consistent and repeatable he is with each combination. I'm not saying that I wouldn't like to see this repeated with multiple types of ammo, but if he had stopped after the first group on each, they would have been 0.91 (which kinda sucks) and 0.33 which is pretty respectable. Because he did the video this way, we can see that across the entire course of fire all 25 rounds from the Ruger produced a group that was over 1" where as 19 out of the first 20 rounds from the Savage were comfortably under 1/2" (the last group was rushed and the group consequently opened up noticeably).
I used to own a Remington 597. I swapped the stock for a laminated thumbhole, used a Harris bipod, a Volquartsen trigger and a 6-24X56 scope. Shooting from a "bench" using SK rifle match I regularly shot 14mm groups at 50 meters.
I just bought an A22 Pro Varmint 22lr, and I have only ran 2 types of HP ammo through it thus far. I am going to try a few more types, but so far I'm very pleased with the accuracy!
For some of us who grew up with military surplus firearms we find the accutrigger natural since it emulates a two-stave military trigger. May take time for those who have spent little time with two stage arrangements.
That type of trigger was invented by Iver Johnson on their small revolvers. Then 80 years later Glock used it and then everyone chose that to bitch about, and it's carried on every since.
I have built a lot of 10/22 rugers there fine tuned rifles if matched with good barrels! I want a A/22 to try it out ! But hands down out all my .22 my favorite and most accurate out of the box is the Marlin bolt action with micro groove barrel, it will out shoot any of the ones I have built !
Couldn't agree more. Had one which I sometimes regret selling. Now running the Ruger 10/22 just because it's more fun to accessorize. I sold the Marlin to get the Ruger Takedown 10/22 with a Magpul backpacker stock, it's barrel of fun.
@@phil4986 I've had the same experience with the Ruger 10/22's as Jasper had. I have owned several of them, including a couple target barreled rifles, and his results mirrored mine for accuracy. I had a couple who couldn't come close to 2" at 100 yards. I finally stopped buying them. Good luck with whatever you shoot.
@@steveminer8341 I bought two older Savage Arms 22'S, both with full sized, adult configured, wood stocks on them. The bolt action is a Model 234 with a five shot detachable mag and the semi is a Model 64 with a ten shot detachable mag on it. Both mags are made of heavy gauge steel. Both rifles shoulder perfectly, feel like quality firearms on the shoulder and even though both open sights on each rifle have no adjustment ramp on them, they shoot point of aim. I wanted rifles that felt like rifles and not toys. These look to both be at least twenty years old, and after I cleaned them, they are everything I was looking for. I might invest in some scopes though because my eyes are fng toast. Those open sights, even with my age eye damage, are very easy to pick up. Great rifles, especially for what I paid for both. They are like sister guns to one another. I am pretty happy especially every time I put one of these to my shoulder and aim it. They just feel right. Up to the shoulder and instant sight alignment. Just perfect.
@@phil4986 I'm happy you found some real shooters to use. They will serve you well for as long as you choose to shoot with them. Be safe and take care of yourself. God bless you and yours.
My Ruger 10/22 would do the EXACT same thing! I even replaced the firing pin, and it still did it with a new firing pin. Finally sold it after I couldn't get it to consistently run. I won't buy another Ruger 10/22 again that's for sure.
Nice video! Good to see the side-by-side comparison. The results are pretty much what one would have suspected. Two fine rifles for day-to-day use. Good analysis and commentary!
I've had a couple of 10/22's, in my day, and an old Marlin I bought new in 1969. Neither of the 10/22s could ever shoot as well as that old Marlin does. I've been tempted to try one of these specialized 10/22's, but now my eyes aren't good enough to justify the expense.
Well Sir, you only live once. You might like building one with all the parts available now. The build will be less expensive and get a scope that will give you the eagle eye at 50 yards. shooting cans and targets is fun even if you miss. My 2 cents have a good one!
I have 3 10/22's an old Marlin 60 and a Winchester 190... target shooting with the 10/22 target is the most accurate but only really likes CCI Blazers lead. - the Marlin is my favorite squirrel rifle and prefers Winchester Wilde Cat 40's... and my Winchester sucks! and has a nasty trigger that I can't seem to smooth out... so even though I have 3 10/22's - a standard with Williams peep - a blued mannlicher with a Williams peep integrated scope rail with Simmons 4x .22 mag scope and a target mod with everything... that's way too heavy for a walk about... the Marlin is my go to for small game woods walking. Nice shooter with a great trigger and an old weaver 4x scope. Great little gun. BTW - the 10/22 target is a total tac driver! It will shoot groups that can be covered with a dime at 50 yards all day long - a little bigger than a Nickel at 75 yards and on good days 68-80° with no wind and decent light, quarter size at 100 yards... I don't really understand why, but it shoots best with standard velocity CCI Blazer lead 38gr round nose... 🤔 I would have believed that a subsonic would have performed better... but "whatever works"
FYI… I have both the 10/22 & the A22. Both are fun but dollar for dollar I shoot my A22 the most just for accuracy reasons, shooting gophers at 100 yds is just more fun when you can really reach out & touch them more often… As for loading the magazines once you get used to loading them it’s second nature. I have put a Boyd stock on the A22 & she fits like a glove, especially using the accu-trigger… I may pursue the Timney trigger in the future for the A22… That would be my only other mod I would add.
Nice Bob. We actually shot the A22 again the other day with the Jard trigger my buddy got and it was malfunctioning every other round. We put the stock trigger back in and it worked fine again. Wasnt aware timney made an A22 trigger. Will let him know. Thanks
Do you know if you can use the tactical solution trimag in the savage mags also ,I know you can use them for Ruger 1022 mags, and for Winchester wildcat mags
I've got a Ruger 10/22 Sporter stainless steel model with a BSA deerhunter scope on it and it is awesome. It patterns really well - I have a Marlin model 60 too without optics and it is another great choice.
I have a Ruger 10/22 Target like the one you shot. Stock barrel, but it is full of Kidd parts. Shot two 5-shot groups at 100 yards to check accuracy, using SK Pistol Match Special. First group was .70", second was .50". Works for me! -- The Savage B22 FV (heavy barrel) which I bought last week for $318 OTD has only gone out to 50 yards, with .25" groups pretty common at that distance, using Lapua Center-X. It seems to prefer Lapua over SK. Taking the B22 out to 100 tomorrow. I will also shoot it with a variety of less expensive CCI ammo. -- SK and Lapua are oily rounds, and hard to get into the Savage rotary mag because of that. Fingers slipping around. Other ammo is slightly more difficult than with a 10/22 mag, but not a deal breaker. Savage is the king of cheap accuracy! And finally they have a decent magazine for 22LR.
Great review.. I wonder how the A22 would stand up to the 10/22 competition… Ruger has improved cleaning by creating access to the barrel from the rear and it’s a custom shop gun so several improvements have made it extremely accurate. Also kinda surprised that on the A22’s 4th target a fly landed right next to where your rounds were landing and while it continued it’s stroll, it didn’t immediately fly off as another round hit the target. That fly had balls…
It's really hard to tell which one is the best in terms of accuracy in this test due to the windy conditions and the scope problems you experienced with the 10-22. No doubt the Savage is nice, but I agree with your dislike of the accu-trigger on the Savage. Both rifles are accurate enough for small game hunting. Nice video coverage.
Brother, appreciate your video however I disagree with your conclusion. BTW, I own both rifles so my opinion is valid. First thing I didn't like is the comparison. The Ruger clearly is a higher end model or modified with a polished bull barrel and as you say aftermarket trigger. The Savage is a basic off the shelf rifle. That said I've been thru a few 10/22s, done lots of mods, had lots of problems. Bought my Axis at Wal-Mart for 320 bucks just because I thought it looked cool, thumbhole stock, beautiful wood grain etc. Put a crap 150 buck scope on it. That SOB is a F'n tack driver and I don't recall a malfunction. Far as the accu-trigger, I don't mind it. I already know it's there. When I get my sights on target, I just take that slack out and after that it's actually a decent trigger. I also have a .308 with the accu-trigger and don't mind it at all. My Savage .308 is also a tack driver out at 300+ yrds. Both guns are great. Love them both. Problem with Savage is there arn't many upgrade parts. Problem with Ruger is there are so many upgrade parts you can spend well over double the price of the actual rifle in upgrades and still end up with the same shot group of the Savage. Newayz, dont be scared to purchase either one. Both wonderful weapons. IMO Savage for bench shooting and accuracy, Ruger takedown with threaded barrel for well, "ya know"....
Just bought the same Savage A22 as in your test. Love it. Don't love the accutrigger but it isn't bad and breaks light and clean. The trigger group I found online is the JARD Savage A17/A22 Trigger at like $250. Think I'll pass on it for now.
I have had Savages and Rugers for a long time. The only thing I don't like about savage is their magazine design.. other than that, thy usually shoot great. I am looking for a T/C R22 currently, they have great reviews and look neat for a little kayak gun.
I feel like the Savage A22 precision would have been a better match as it has a heavier barrel like this 10/22 target. I owned both the A22 in this video, the A22 precision, and shot many 10/22's. I actually like the accutrigger and the magazine loading while you are totally right was easy to get used to. I also think different ammo types and maybe 100 yards as well would have been good for the comparison.
Easy cure no matter what you let your kids shoot. They load the magazine/s for whatever they shoot. They also help cleaning the gun/s afterwards. If they won´t...they don´t shoot.
I recently bought a 10/22. For the rifle I got I felt completely ripped off. It costs almost the same as my Ruger American.308 win. The .308 win was a dead on monster right out of the box. The 10/22 was so far off target at 25 yards with the provided scope I had to start sighting at 10 yards! It took three different sighting sessions to get the ride to an acceptable level and to work out what ammo it likes. The synthetic stock was so warped that with the front stock band clamp installed it was pressuring a twist onto the barrel. I had to delete the band and float the stock off the barrel to get the barrel to float free. That fixed the windage issues. But elevation was still over 10 inches off at 25 yards. Turns out the upper receiver where the scope mount is wasn’t level. Fixed that. I re-centered the optics in the scope and now the rifle shoots as it should. Now if the bolt would hold open after the last round.
I absolutely hate the accutrigger as well. The ruger is a good accurate rifle but it benefits greatly from a quality replacement barrel and trigger. It is much better suited for speed then accuracy. For affordable accuracy I will stay with my CZ
For the 10/22 you can also get 25 rd mags and a speed loader that makes the loading of the high capacity mags much easier. Unfortunately up here in Canada high cap mags not allowed for the 10/22. Police state and all that.
1LRLRG - It's because of the Ruger Charger Pistol, being a pistol on/of the same 10/22 platform/action, these 25 rounders are not allowed in the pistol - so they banned them all, rather than going after folk who may be using the 25's in the pistol?! Which is silly as you, obviously, can't legally shoot a pistol unless you are at a range (in Canada). Yet you can still buy and use the GSG drum mags, which are 110 rounds (actually on sale at Cabela's right now for around $100.00). They are junk but you can get and use them legally. There's some good old logic, right there!! LOL, cheers...
Got to say you have to give it to Savage with such a slim barrel . Especially when you had no stoppages in the Savage at all. The way you can clean the Savage is also a plus and it comes in an aluminum stock.
Loved your video. I used to be a Ruger only guy. My experience has changed my mind and your video seems to echo it. My 10/22's are magazine and ammo picky or there will be feeding issues often. I have moded some and really like the BX trigger. I have one with a Hogue over-molded stock and a carbon fiber barrel. Super comfortable and light weight. Great for walking in the woods and pretty accurate with the right ammo. Then I got Savage Mark II used and have never shot a more accurate .22. No matter the MOD I made to my Ruger did it come close the group size for the stock Savage. I just bought another Savage and looking at a couple more. Sure there are more options for the Ruger. It is just a decision of do I want to look cooler or shoot more accurate. In my opinion the Savage feeds better, shoots better (I do not mind the Accu-Trigger) and costs less. That is tough to beat in my book.
Thank You Sir! I know butler creek makes magazines for the Savage A17. I wonder if the butler creek is easier loading. 👍🇺🇸 #22aday. I believe the BC mags are 25 rd.
7:00 i had this happen just the other day. Unfire round did not get extracted, stayed locked in place and would send itself back into the chamber, stripping a new round. I did the same thing where i pull the round out and it didn't have a firing pin mark on it.
Nice informative video, I prefer the 10/22 better. I have 2 of them, the first one started as a standard stainless 10/22 that took apart and polished the bolt and the area that the bolt slides on for SMOOTHER operation. I then installed a X-RING TACTICAL SOLUTION FLUTED aluminum steel barrel (light weight) and Volquartsen TG2000 trigger assembly. I put that in a Houge black tactical thumbhole stock and mounted a DESENT but not too expensive 6-24X-40 AO so I can see when I'm shooting at small things at up to 100 yards away. The second 10/222 I bought was already built except for the scope. It had a NICE forged aluminum receiver with the scope rail as part of the receiver, it had a fancy aftermarket bolt, bolt handle, mag release and a BX trigger assembly and a MAG-PUL HUNTER STOCK and a Ruger hammer forged heavy barreled I got that slightly used for $399.99+tax but ALSO got 30 days FREE RANGE TIME in a 75' indoor range that I can at least sight it in to start at 75'. I like having a 10/22s because I would use the first one for hunting because it was light and comfortable shooting off hand. The other one is HEAVY so it's my bench rifle. Depending on how both shoot I may swap the better parts around to make the BEST 10/22, BUT that will be about 6 months later became I had a FIRE in my BEDROOM at 3AM. A couple of my "toys" got TOASTED. The rest are at a VERY GOOD friend's HOUSE being SECURED while my house gets fixed, I'm in a APARTMENT NOW and I REALLY DON'T WANT TO ADVERTISE MY HOBBY (for politically correct reasons and SECURITY REASONS) ESPECIALLY HOW THINGS IN THIS COUNTRY IS GOING ON NOWADAYS. I had my conceal carry permit since 2000 and I'm GLAD I HAVE IT BUT DON'T RELISH THE THOUGHT THAT I MAY HAVE TO USE IT. I'M 71 and injured my left knee back in 1983 and it doesn't get better with AGE. I CAN'T RUN EVEN IF GODZILLA WAS CHASING ME. LOL 😨😩😧😂😂😂😂😂😂 KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WITH 22lrs. I've got 2 different pre-WWII Mauser single shot 22lrs (ES340N & ES340B) BUT THAT'S A DIFFERENT STORY. 😉😁😄
Good video and thanks for sharing. Going by your video, if I'm going hunting for my next meal, I'll just have to ignore all that annoying features so that I don't go to bed with an empty stomach. Therefore, I think I'm going for the one that shoots more accurate and that's would be the Savage A22. I believed, not too many guys can't disagree with that assumption.
I have a pretty modified 10-22. The single best thing you can do is the trigger. The gun is otherwise pretty cheaply made. The bolt really needs an upgrade like tactile solutions does. My 10-22 target had a good barrel but was too heavy. To get one hole Groups you need to also headspace the bolt and barrel. Ruger didn’t do that with the target version. Still if I wanted cheap I’d go with a stock rifle and a bx trigger.
There was a fly. He almost felt the wrath of the savage. Great shooting. Savage mags looked ruff. The accu-trigger doesn't bother me to much. Maybe the blade feels like an extra step in the process for each shot. I love the 10/22. I would take the ruger for ease of use. Both are accurate enough for some shooting for a $1 bets with my son and daughter. Great video!!
Both of these rifles are good and accurate. You can shoot out a man's tooth at 50 yards and hit anything at 100 yards, which is why I stick with the autoloaders vs the bolt guns. They're just more fun and accurate enough to hunt any varmint on earth.
I still have my original 10/22 I bought used in around 1994 with an old Leupold 2-7x. Also have a light-ish weight one in a Hogue stock and the BX with a little 1-6 LVPO and have a Custom Shop with a Tandemkross Ultimate trigger and an Arken EP-L4. Previously owned an even more decked out one with a lot of Volquartsen parts that I ended up selling to a buddy. Never owned a Savage auto 22 though I've owned a couple of their bolt rifles and still have one FV-SR and have a B17 FV with a Boyd's stock and an Athlon Argos that's pretty sweet. I have nothing against Savage and I like the laminate stock on this A22 but for a budget-ish 22 auto loader... CLEARLY Ruger for me!
The Savage is by far the more consistent shooter. The 10/22 can be IF you bed the barrel and button down the rear of the receiver as per rimfirecentral instructions. It's a project gun for us tinkers.
Hook Line and Chill! The manufacturers generally provide what the buyers want. I like the rotary mags myself. Not dissing on stand mags, but I honestly don't see this as an issue. At least it isn't for me. In fact I am going to be working on a hand full of CZ 452 Magnum magazines to see if I can get them feeding better.
..my wife has the same 10/22 and is shooting 5-shot, sub 1" groups @100 yards with CCI Tactical and Geco semi ammo. With 12x40 Hawke Panorama. I know, I can't believe either...but she is...
I just fixed a savage with a seized firing pin. The roll pin that retains the firing pin in the bolt bends. I’m not sure why because it was brought to me like this. But it’s a job to get it out.
Good shooting Josh. I think the savage is more accurate and better consistency but I don’t like the trigger. Love the wood laminate pattern of the Ruger10/22. Have a good day sir.
That A22 has a particularly nasty trigger. 3 lbs, but the break length and characteristics are very inconsistent from shot-to-shot. I ordered a Jard for it, so that should help.
Ive always felt Savage makes better barrels but i agree that the 10/22 is a friendlier design overall. Ive got a Built 10/22 i'd lend if you ever want to do a Built Semi Auto comparison.
I just recently purchased a Savage MK 2. The Accutrigger in the Mark 2 is nothing like the triggers in the centerfire rifles. I shoot 600 yard competition with an Accutrigger, it is set a one pound and it shoots great. 16 of 25 hits on a five inch plate at 600 yards. The BX trigger in my 10/22 is crap.
Very nice review. I think you covered it pretty well. The Savage is less expensive but does not have all the aftermarket things you can purchase for the Ruger. The Ruger had a bull barrel and I expected that an advantage. However, I had a Ruger 10-22 some time ago and had put a match barrel on it and a nice free floated stock and it was not all that accurate. I do like the accu-triggers in the Savage though. But that is a personal preference thing. I like light trigger pulls and I adjust them down a long way and the extra safety in taking that pull down is built in the accu-trigger. One thing in your review was a failure to extract on the Ruger. That most likely was due to a tighter chamber or a bad round.
A standard Savage against a heavy hammer-forged barreled target version? This, plus what you say, is unbiased? 🤔 Crowns? I've never worried about hurting them. Cleaning from the muzzle: Carbon steel crown against aluminum, brass and/or plastic cleaning devices? No damage likely. Never seen any in my 56 years of target shooting! Just my experiences. I enjoyed your rant about all the things that you didn't like about Savages before the competition ended. Very professional. Still, i appreciate your efforts, time & presentations. Sound quality is excellent. The Ruger didn't win so your own test "was a wash"?
I love 10 22,s but for a target rifle the lock time, and trigger pull leaves much to be desired. Best get a bolt gun. Not as easy to dump the mag either.
Weeellll, Here in Canada the Ruger sells around $700CDN and the A22 is about $350 - NOT much of an even field. That's like comparing a Chev Blazer and an Escalade- they're both GM SUVs with tires and stuff. The A22 Precision sells for around $700 so that should have been your basis. And then there's the scopes, prob a Simmons and a Zeiss, huh ?
I'm a Ruger 10/22 dude, but it pained me to see you have F-2-F in the sighter group. My target model has the same issues along with failure to feed. It's accurate enough to plink and have a big time with youngsters but the reliability issue for a semi-auto really hurts it in the overall grade out. I prefer an old Stevens bolt action 22LR if I'm really hungry for squirrel meat.
I have a Ruger 10/22 Target all factory w/blued hammer forged barrel cheap 1in tube 4-16x40mm Center Point scope... I don't know what the deal is with yours??? But I can shoot groups @ 50yds with CCI Blazers that I can cover with a dime... all day long!
I have a 40x Remington and a couple anschutz rifles that are great shooters never really wanted a 10/22 recently bought a 10/22 target lapped the barrel and did a trigger job surprised at its accuracy
@@PursuitofAccuracy I too have the Remington 40x a couple anschutz 1710 rifles as well as a couple old Winchester target rifles 52 and a 75 surprisingly I have two beautiful older marlin model 780’s I believe they are from the late 70’s both are great shooters that acutually rival the others. As for the 3 10/22’s I own , they are simply plinkers with the exception of one with a tac sol barrel, houge over mold stock , Kidd trigger group and a primary arms red dot sight that I use for club level steel challenge. I leave the pursuit of accuracy to the bolt guns.
I have the A22 but I can't tell you how it shoots. With virtually ZERO rounds through it, the charge handle broke off while checking the action. Savage was great to deal with and the rep said it is a very common problem. Kinda regretting my purchase....
I have owned a Ruger 10/22 target for 20 years. It has been the best 22 I have ever owned. I have several different 22. Find the ammo the gun likes and shoot it.
I know I am late to the party here... I would have liked to have seen you mount the same scope on both guns. You admittedly had problems with the scope on the 10/22. It's hard to say one rifle is more accurate than the other when all things, other than the rifle, were not the same. I do not own either gun and came across this video doing some research for a purchase. All that said, I appreciate your videos and the time and effort you put into them! I subscribed and will peruse your other content.
I do not have savage A22, I do have 10/22 with that said I must admit to being the dumbest ass around. I sighted mine in with cheap Remington thunderbolts, it would stack 10 bullets in a dime, I could actually hit a finishing nail at 50yards all with just a factory wood and factory barrel. Now here comes the stupid in me can't be satisfied with better then great, I get heavy target barrel and get nice synthetic stock at gun show now I'm lucky to keep 10 bullets in a quarter at 50yards. I wish I had did more research in the beginning the ruger 10/22 apparently were not designed to have free floating barrels that is why they have a barrel strap from factory I have not had chance to bed the stock to see if I can improve accuracy live and learn. I as an Oldman just grab my old Glenfield bolt action 22 when I go squirrel hunting that thing could careless what ammo you stick in it going to smack the head every time
I have been shooting a 10/22 since 1976. Most likely before you were born. LOL.. So I just purchased a 10/22 VTL. Will be putting it in a Victor chassis and a good optic just to see how accurate I can get it.
Never owned a 10/22 that i ever liked. Inconsistent accuracy in every one i`ve ever owned since they hit the market. Not to mention all the jamming & misfires. I`m down to owning just one 10/22. I got this one shooting halfway decent, but it ain`t no bolt gun accuracy, that`s for sure, and it never will be. That`s what my CZ457`s are for, lol. At 50yds, my wife an i take turns lighting match sticks with the 457`s.
@@daryllmroberts7958 be careful saying that. You'll find that one guy that takes that as a challenge and builds a custom semi auto .22 to dunk on the elite bolt gunners.
@@randomidiot8142 I recently worked on that 1022 that i spoke of earlier in my other comment, bought a new target barrel, a new trigger, and now it REALLY kicks ass. (SK - Match Ammo) And you`re exactly right... i`ve been the guy to beat at the club lately, as i beat up on the big dogs and their over priced bolt guns. Lots of grumbling from the big dogs.
I’m totally bias because I have a Ruger Target but I think the group average was almost negligible considering the 10/22 shot the smallest group of the day and you could get a different result on a different day, with different conditions, ammo, etc. Great video, I second another couple videos testing different ammo through each rifle. Mine likes RWS and of all things, some old Centurion that smells like crayons when you fire it lol.
With all the fly comments maybe i should put out a blank target with some soda on it and see if we can hit some flies with a 22lr
Great sport fly shooting find SK long-range match highly effective 🤣
Love to see it true pursuit of accuracy
that actually sounds like a fun saturday afternoon lol
Back in the 90's using a 10/22 I would smeer Sweet Orange Marmalade on a target and wait for the YellowJackets to show up. At 15 yards Iron Sights it would be 1 shot for 1 kill.
A target model Ruger w/target barrel vs a standard Savage w/standard barrel. "Savage was more accurate & consistent". Sounds like a pretty good trigger to me!
That’s exactly what I thought
I'm not saying that it is whiny,, but it sounds like he is trying to make excuses as to why his rifle is better. the magazines,😢, the trigger, 😢, it has a better scope, 😢, it a wash.
About 14 years ago I built a 10/22 target. It has a Clerke bull barrel, Volquartson trigger group and a Fajen full adjustable target stock. With Wolf match ammo it will consistently shoot dime sized groups at 75 yards. Find the ammo your rifle likes and the groups shrink.
I own both of these rifles and will take the Savage as my favorite every time.
I enjoyed shooting the savage. He got a new trigger for it as well so hoping i get to shoot it again
You can get an speedloader for the 10/22 though, saves your thumbs and takes less time
@@PursuitofAccuracyIt sure didn’t sound like you enjoyed it.
No ones gonna mention the fly!?! You show some super discipline not targetting that fly and staying on the group. Way to go.
I thought for sure that fly was gonna get it
That fly showed some super discipline not flying off when a rifle bullet whizzed by it.
Just bought an A22 FVSR after watching this review.
Something about the steel barrels especially the heavy’s and aluminum receivers not holding up.
thanks i have that same one and it does the same thing so i will try that
My opinion: I'd MUCH rather see you shoot each gun with a 5 round group, with 5 DIFFERENT ammo types/ brands. Every 22 shoots/ likes different ammo, and this only proved which one liked THIS ammo best, NOT which is more accurate ;)
start a site--do the tests
The only thing im interested in is a semi that shoot CCI SV well upto 100yrds. NRL22 and 200yard targets I'll use the CZ457.
Agree try different rounds, and also something unique like 60 g SSS Aguila .22 lr rounds
@@dsltruck2500 60gr SSS round do NOT like to cycle in semi auto rifles.
I used to own a Remington 597. I swapped the stock for a laminated thumbhole, used a Harris bipod, a Volquartsen trigger and a 6-24X56 scope.
Shooting from a "bench" using SK rifle match I regularly shot 14mm groups at 50 meters.
Best statement I've heard in quite awhile-"I'm not tied to ... " I'm a Savage fan, have obtained good results from them. have a 10/22 also
Thanks practical plinking. Appreciate the support 👍👍
I just bought an A22 Pro Varmint 22lr, and I have only ran 2 types of HP ammo through it thus far. I am going to try a few more types, but so far I'm very pleased with the accuracy!
I have the same model. can't wait to shoot it more when the weather warms. shoots aguila intercepters pretty well
For some of us who grew up with military surplus firearms we find the accutrigger natural since it emulates a two-stave military trigger.
My xt22 is badass with cci minimags
I have a Marlin 7000 Bull Barrel with microgroove. It's pretty accurate, a tack driver!
Couldn't agree more. Had one which I sometimes regret selling. Now running the Ruger 10/22 just because it's more fun to accessorize. I sold the Marlin to get the Ruger Takedown 10/22 with a Magpul backpacker stock, it's barrel of fun.
@@Jammaster1972
Did the exact same! I bought the A22 and it’s maybe even more accurate than my long missed Marlin 60.
Not had much luck with accuracy out of a 10/22. Owned a few over the years. 2in groups at 100 yards is about the best I have seen.
Thanks for that.
Helps me not buy one.
@@steveminer8341 Thanks. To you as well, Steve.
My Ruger 10/22 would do the EXACT same thing! I even replaced the firing pin, and it still did it with a new firing pin. Finally sold it after I couldn't get it to consistently run. I won't buy another Ruger 10/22 again that's for sure.
I had the same problem.
Nice video! Good to see the side-by-side comparison. The results are pretty much what one would have suspected. Two fine rifles for day-to-day use. Good analysis and commentary!
15:54 am I the only one hoping he would tag that fly? 😂🤣
Lmao, I should have read the comments first. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Just sold my 10/22 and yup accuracy was never it's strong point, neither was cleaning it and it's ammo sensitivity pissed me off.
@@andreawhalen4142my bx 25 only likes mini mags 10 round eats anything. My savage 64 eats anything maybe good cleaning
I'd like to see you get ahold of a Marlin 60, maybe with a trigger job of some kind.
Im sure the 10/22 custom costing double to triple will be the better gun ........... like most things price affect quality
Missed the fly. Lucky fly lol.
I like the accu-trigger on my Savage bmag it's about 2 pound pull
The scope problems was an issue for the 10/22. I agree
Sadly the results were wrong...included sight in group on the 10-22, not on the savage. Ruger won.
Yeah, the factory trigger has to be really bad to justify $250 expense.
I have had Savages and Rugers for a long time. The only thing I don't like about savage is their magazine design.. other than that, thy usually shoot great. I am looking for a T/C R22 currently, they have great reviews and look neat for a little kayak gun.
Love the Savage a 22 I have one and I just really like it
I feel like the Savage A22 precision would have been a better match as it has a heavier barrel like this 10/22 target. I owned both the A22 in this video, the A22 precision, and shot many 10/22's. I actually like the accutrigger and the magazine loading while you are totally right was easy to get used to. I also think different ammo types and maybe 100 yards as well would have been good for the comparison.
Also the buttler creeks 25rnd for the A22 work great and are easy to load
I have never had an issue with trigger blades, I'm not sure what the big deal is about them.
If i get enough time with them i am ok but just dont prefer them. I dont link having any trigger movement before the shot breaks personally
Personal preference. I learned most of my shooting in the military or on mil spec rifles so I actually prefer a 2 stage trigger
Easy cure no matter what you let your kids shoot. They load the magazine/s for whatever they shoot. They also help cleaning the gun/s afterwards. If they won´t...they don´t shoot.
Lighten the trigger all the way Down and get butler creek mags . That should help you get that group down considerably in the savage
Accutrigger is great once you remove the stupid blade. Nice crisp break and as light as I could ever want it.
I don’t have a Savage a22 but I do have a b22 and I do like itmore then my 10/22
I recently bought a 10/22.
The band on the lower priced Rugers really hampers accuracy
I absolutely hate the accutrigger as well. The ruger is a good accurate rifle but it benefits greatly from a quality replacement barrel and trigger. It is much better suited for speed then accuracy. For affordable accuracy I will stay with my CZ
You need to test with the same scopes on both rifles. The Bushnell AR223 scope is a great scope with great optics and parallax.
Would like to say thanks for the video. Much appreciated.
For the 10/22 you can also get 25 rd mags and a speed loader that makes the loading of the high capacity mags much easier. Unfortunately up here in Canada high cap mags not allowed for the 10/22. Police state and all that.
Yeah i have a few 25 round mags but dont use them often, they always seem to be in the way
@@PursuitofAccuracy For the kids they're great as you don't wear your thumb out as fast
@@1LRLRG very true haha. My oldest now likes the precision .22lr stuff a little more so been loading lots of cz 10 round mags 😁😁
@@1LRLRG completely agree on the speedloader, I've put thousands of rounds through mine since I was about 12
1LRLRG - It's because of the Ruger Charger Pistol, being a pistol on/of the same 10/22 platform/action, these 25 rounders are not allowed in the pistol - so they banned them all, rather than going after folk who may be using the 25's in the pistol?!
The way you can clean the Savage is also a plus and it comes in an aluminum stock.
bought the savage very happy
Haha no bias here. The savage kicked butt. It's ok to say it, you'll feel better after. Maybe get a hug.

My A22 outshoots my 10/22 every time. It’s become my go to small game rifle. I prefer bolt actions for target shooting.
I love bolt action 22s for squirrels or rabbits. Makes it feel more like a hunt
I had a custom 10/22 a 77/22 and a custom Mark2 pistol. 10/22 was least accurate with one constant flyer. Pistol always outshot them both !
Woiuld love to have seen the Marlin model 60 thrown in the mix!
Thank you
Both of these rifles are good and accurate.
To add to my last comment I think you did a good job with both "BORROWED" Guns.
I've got the a22 pro varmint. It shoots lights out
Hook Line and Chill!
I love the Savage
..my wife has the same 10/22 and is shooting 5-shot, sub 1" groups @100 yards with CCI Tactical and Geco semi ammo. With 12x40 Hawke Panorama. I know, I can't believe either...but she is...
Evrry rimfire barrel is gonna like what it likes. I believe it
Out of the box the 1022 has the worst trigger of all my guns
My experience mirrors yours. It's not really that hard to make a good trigger.
Depends on ammo also for the Ruger. It may tack drive with another ammo.
I just fixed a savage with a seized firing pin. The roll pin that retains the firing pin in the bolt bends. I’m not sure why because it was brought to me like this. But it’s a job to get it out.
The Savage is more accurate
As I suspected and expected.
My Savage Mark ii is more accurate than my 10/22. And I love the Savage Accutrigger.
I have a Vortex Crossfire scope on my deer hunting rifle. I hate it too. It gets the job done, but I cant wait to replace it.
Good shooting Josh. I think the savage is more accurate and better consistency but I don’t like the trigger. Love the wood laminate pattern of the Ruger10/22. Have a good day sir.
Thanks Joaquin
That A22 has a particularly nasty trigger. 3 lbs, but the break length and characteristics are very inconsistent from shot-to-shot. I ordered a Jard for it, so that should help.
@@John.VanSwearingen let me know how that new trigger works out for you. Thanks for the feedback.
My 10/22 loves Winchester supper X and federal hollow points
Since I have more tied into 10-22's that is good enough for me. But I would take either one.
Either one of those are shooting "Minute of Squirrel", they're both great rifles for the money.
He also said the one scope was giving him eye strain, be nice if he had the same scope on each gun, that plays a lot into this test
Ive always felt Savage makes better barrels but i agree that the 10/22 is a friendlier design overall. Ive got a Built 10/22 i'd lend if you ever want to do a Built Semi Auto comparison.
Might take you up on that
I think you should have used the same scope on both.
The savage a22 is more expensive than the plain 10/22.
Haha yeah i hear ya there. All my serious rimfires are bolt guns
That fly just don't know how close he came to a dirt nap 🤣
Turn eyepiece until target clears on the vortex without Ao, people say that is for cross hairs only, but it works. Kentucky
He should have used the A22 precision.

It happens for sure. Thanks for watching
Awesome. I have seen some that shoot exceptionally well out to 100 yards
My A22 actually falls apart , have had all sorts of problems with it. does shoot great when it shoots
I would say they both need to have identical optics to be a fair comparison.
I’m not a semi auto fan for accuracy, but they are a ton of fun to shoot.
Yeah you would be correct lol
Nice .
A better scope that is parallax adjustable would make the 10/22 target better 👍
Yeah it was tough shooting paper with that scope.
I like the accutrigger that’s why I buy Savage.
I have both, I bought the savage on a whim because it came with Boyds stock, savage trigger is the worst buy Ruger with tons of after-market parts
Like the real world approach....good to see this rather than cherry picked groups
Thank you sir
A surprise .22 contender is the Winchester Wildcat and it will take Ruger 10/22 magazines
The Savage seems pretty good.
Nice
ummm,,,they arent tack drivers,,,but any semi out does any bolt in the easy areas
@@daryllmroberts7958 be careful saying that. You'll find that one guy that takes that as a challenge and builds a custom semi auto .22 to dunk on the elite bolt gunners.
@@randomidiot8142
I recently worked on that 1022 that i spoke of earlier in my other comment, bought a new target barrel, a new trigger, and now it REALLY kicks ass. (SK - Match Ammo)
And you`re exactly right... i`ve been the guy to beat at the club lately, as i beat up on the big dogs and their over priced bolt guns.
I own an older model Savage and it is accurate.
