  • Update: • Joaquin Phoenix Reunit...
Mirroring his Oscars acceptance speech in which he spoke to the plight of mother cows and their babies, Phoenix helps to liberate a cow and her newborn calf from a Los Angeles slaughterhouse and bring them to Farm Sanctuary.
Phoenix said, "I never thought I’d find friendship in a slaughterhouse, but meeting Anthony and opening my heart to his, I realize we might have more in common than we do differences. Without his act of kindness, Liberty and her baby calf, Indigo, would have met a terrible demise. Although we will continue to fight for the liberation of all animals who suffer in these oppressive systems, we must take pause to acknowledge and celebrate the victories, and the people who helped achieve them. Shaun Monson, Amy Jean Davis, and the entire LA Animal Save community, have taken their pain of bearing witness and turned it into effective, diplomatic advocacy for the voiceless. As a result, Liberty and Indigo will never experience cruelty or the touch of a rough hand.
My hope is, as we watch baby Indigo grow up with her mom Liberty at Farm Sanctuary, that we’ll always remember that friendships can emerge in the most unexpected places; and no matter our differences, kindness and compassion should rule everything around us."

A lot of people ask what the point of saving animals from the slaughterhouse is, what difference would it make. Just saving that calf and her mother made all the difference in the world for them.

I said: LOOK INTO A COW'S EYES: the way you look at your pet, scratch it's chin, rub its forehead. They are pure peace, especially if you look at the depth and stillness, utterly peace in their eyes. They may die in 60 seconds, 59 seconds too long. And those 60 seconds and the time before it happens are terror. Just terror, adrenaline, pain, confusion, agitation.

@@Xenonic2 Actors will do anything they are told - as long as they are paid enough. They strip, starve, drug themselves, humiliate themselves, go under the knife etc etc for their millions. The financially powerful Soy-farming lobby (their industry is worth more than 40 billion dollars in the US alone) needs to frighten enough human beings into surviving on soy kibble, in order to continue to afford their own wagyu beef dinners and champagne-and-caviar soirées. This is because, under the UN sustainable goals programme, soy growers, as suppliers of animal feed, are under threat by government regulation as major contributors to GMO foods and global deforestation. They thus fund 'The Impossible Burger' and 'Beyond Meat' to replace animal consumption of soy with human consumption of soy, in order to preserve their market shares, worldwide. They hire Joaquim and his drug-fuelled mental-disorder to do some sad, violin-backed soliloquies about cows and calves, riding on the unexpected popularity of his latest movie. Certain individuals like Maria Rohmer lap it up. Certain others get to afford caviar at the expense of the former. The real food chain - of the rich living off the gullibility of the non-rich- continues uninterrupted.

*"How do we know the cows perspective?"* newbies to the subject may ask. Any being with a developed nervous system feels pain. We anthropomorphise and relate what we as humans would experience with the being in question.
If a cat, dog, cow, whale, human or mouse experience their murder/death, while conscious, over 60 seconds, it's obvious, from that beings perspective, they are in discomfort/agony/fear/hell/despair/helplessness/indignity for that time period - and the being would thus prefer to not be experiencing these things.
Thus, from the beings perspective, 60 seconds is too long a period to be tortured to death.

Typically I would agree, but humans are omnivores (just like bears). There are some of us who can live purely off of fruits, veges, and grains, and some who need meat. Like my aunt for example.
She lived as a vegetarian for 15 years before her doctor told her that her body was not properly absorbing nutrients (like protein) from beans and eggplants (which are used to substitute the nutrients found in meat) and that if she didn't start eating meat, she would potentially die (or at the very least develop illnesses associated with malnutrition). Naturally, she was devastated, but she did start eating the minimum amount her doctor suggested. So no, not all humans "choose" to kill animals for food.

The less of us eat meat, the less animals will be bred for food; the more resources (land, water, technologies, etc.) will be re-channelled into producing/researching plants and plant-based alternatives to meat, and the more expensive meat is going to get for you (for the lack of economies of scale). Veganism means LESS meat for you, and more costlier meat for you.

He has reached a place where he has convinced himself. He feels maybe that he needs to do the work so the cows don't have to go to another slaughterhouse that DOES kill mothers and calves and where death takes longer than 60 seconds.
Its harrowing and ultimately the blame does lie with consumers and commercialism. They create the demand that a cow must be bred, raised and killed.
The man here is a strong example of cognitive dissonance in play and he would be correct that if he changed careers, not one cow's life would be saved.

    • @scrubjay93
      @scrubjay93 5 років тому +5

I thought the same thing, but if it is the best in the industry relative to all other slaughterhouses, the practice should still be rewarded. I know how horrible the industry is, but it won't change all at once. Encouraging good behavior, and having a video spreading that message, is a practical way to reduce cruelty and suffering. Other methods are working to change regulations, enforcing existing regulations against cruelty, and punishing factories that are blatantly breaking the law. Also trying to inform people about where their food comes from and the suffering involved. It's unfortunate that change is slow but at least it is going in the right direction and speeding up due to the power of the internet. For people who still want to eat meat, I suggest they buy only meat that comes from local, organic, pasture-raised (grass-fed) animals. Anything helps. Unfortunately there is a new industry that involves shipping livestock long distances on a global scale and that is a new form of cruelty that needs to be fought in the countries that are exporting live animals.

He's actually inspiring me to go vegan. I'm slowly starting to avoid meat and milk products overall and adjusting to a vegan lifestyle eventually. Mainly for a good conscience. It just makes me feel good to eat something with the knowledge nothing had to die for it, no matter if it was a painful death or a quick, painless one. It just doesn't feel right.
Update: I went fully vegan a day after posting this comment and now I'm vegan for over a month. I regret absolutely nothing. Sometimes I do miss the taste of certain products that are difficult to replace and accomplish the same taste, but it's super easy to get over it. There is SO much food and I'm someone who eats a lot and grabs snacks all the time. Being vegan barely requires any effort to my surprise. My body is in a good place too and, to anyone who went "You'll ruin your health", I'm perfectly healthy and I feel more energized! I'm not taking any supplements either, I can replace any vitamins that are in meat with plant based products just fine. If anything, I've been watching my body more than ever. It's funny how non-vegans suddenly turn into nutrition experts to defend their eating habits, though. 🤨
TLDR: Been vegan for over a month, I'm healthy and feeling great. No regrets whatsoever.
Update: 24th December 2020: Still vegan! Feeling fantastic. Life's good, I'm still alive and not malnurished, what a surprise! Making pizza rolls for me and my non-vegan family later today. 10/10 i recommend

I've had a lily for 5 years and it has bloomed beautiful flowers every year except last year when I moved it from my kitchen to another room that had better lighting. I always talk to my plants (don't care if you think it's crazy, it's not like a conversation, it's like a HELLO BEAUTIES) So the only difference was that I spent less time in that room, and didn't "talk" to the plant much. Didn't bloom, started to wilt a bit despite having good light and water. I figured maybe it's life cycle was just coming to and end. I moved it back to the kitchen, greet it every morning with my other kitchen plants... and this year, and it started growing earlier than ever and it's already beginning to bloom and it's not even spring. I swear plants have feelings. Just saying. They're alive too.

I think what makes Joaquin different from everyone else is that if he’s going to preach about something, he’s going to walk the walk and actually do something about it. Whether you agree with him or not, that’s worthy of some respect.

Dylan Watts what you wanted me to state the obvious. That it’s wrong to eat dairy, which I don’t, how bout you? That dairy is unnecessary for humans and causes unimaginable suffering, which it does. So I say again, the video sums up how sad the whole dairy business is and I’m thankful for him rescuing them. Hope that helps you understand. I see you’ve been trolling on here so I won’t be answering any more inane comments.

Again you morons fight for a cow when the real problem is that billions of wasteful fucks are destroying this planet. Going vegan isn't saving shit as much as possible you like to believe it will. THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!!
I heard his award show speech and I felt what he was saying. He made absolutely good and valid points. The media portrays him as this unusual earthling who's believes and opinions are influenced by mind-alternating substances or mental issues. Clearly, as you can see the dude really does have a great big heart.
The moment he accepted the award then started taking about his issues and concerns, i thought it was brilliant and genuine. I'm glad he was given a voice because he spoke his true values at the perfect time. Seeing is believing but I didn't need to see what he was talking about. As a deep thinker, I too thought the same thing. Overall, in my eyes he's a very talented actor and inspirational human being with a loving soul.
Respect Joaquin Phoenix and congratulations on your win.

What an emotional video!!!😢. Tears of joy when Joaquin Phenix brings Mother cow and calf to the sanctuary from the slaughter house. I’m raised as a vegetarian and I have seen the animals especially cows have feelings just like humans while growing up in India. I saw the tears coming out of cow’s eyes when her owner- farmer passed away and p body was ready to take for cremation. My dad was a family doctor of that farmer family and we lived nearby. It was like she was missing her owner🥲. I will never forget that image. It was a very emotional scene.
