Joaquin Phoenix Reunited with Rescued Mother Cow & Calf for Earth Day

- This Earth Day, Joaquin Phoenix reflects on the calf and her mother who he helped liberate from a Los Angeles slaughterhouse (www.farmsanctu...) with the help of Los Angeles Animal Save almost a year ago and the environmental realities we're facing today. In a powerful new video directed by Earthlings Director Shaun Monson, Phoenix reunites with the pair at Farm Sanctuary, the country’s first farm animal sanctuary and advocacy organization.
At his 2020 Oscars acceptance, Phoenix spoke to the plight of mother cows and their babies. A day later, he helped liberate a calf and her mother from a Los Angeles slaughterhouse and brought them to Farm Sanctuary.
When Phoenix first met Liberty and Indigo (as they'd soon be named), he experienced them as beings in the grip of uncontrollable fear. Liberty had been trucked from a feedlot to the slaughterhouse where she gave birth. They were exhausted and dehydrated and frightened.
Almost a year later, though, Phoenix got the chance to meet them as individuals. As Liberty and Indigo: warm, intelligent beings with their own unique lives, as animals experiencing autonomy and with the freedom to exhibit their natural behavior.
Phoenix reflected on the rescue and the environmental realities we're facing today.
“We spend one day each year paying homage to our planet, Earth Day, but the other 364 days, we consume with impunity,” he said. “It's undeniable the detrimental impact that animal agriculture has on the environment. This simple act of rescuing Liberty and Indigo...in some ways, it's just as simple as sparing the lives of these creatures. But it's also an acknowledgment of not only the destruction they feel at our hands but the environment as a whole. By our actions, we either have the choice to continue to destroy other beings and the environment, or we begin the process of reversing the damage that we've done.”
With more than nine billion animals raised and slaughtered for human consumption each year in the U.S. alone, modern animal agriculture puts an incredible strain on natural resources such as land, water, and fossil fuel.
Climate change is imminent if we do not adopt a plant-based lifestyle. Every day is Earth Day.

What Joaquin didn't realize was that Indigo came right up to him specifically, out of a whole crowd of people, because he was the one that picked her up and rescued her from that hell on earth. She knew exactly who he was.

Well done! I’m also a vegetarian, I’m fifteen years old and I became one last year because I hated the taste of meat. But after hearing Phoenix’s Oscar speech I learned the true meaning of living a life without meat. My dad is a vegan.

And we are also destroying our oceans which also provides clean air. Humans are horrific and destructive creatures. I will forever say Joaquin is by far not only my favorite actor but one of the people I look up to the most. More people should be like him. I appreciate and respect Mr Phoenix for what he did. Growing up on a farm, I hated when a hog was murdered at Thanksgiving and a steer was murdered at Christmas for meat to do us all year. I couldn't run far enough to escape the sounds. My family laughed at me because I wouldn't participate. One steer I raised on a nipple bucket named Ferdinand. He'd come running as soon as he seen me. I didn't realize he would be murdered in time. It literally broke my heart. Cows are smart, they have feelings and strong emotions. Never got over it. That was almost 50 years ago. Forgive me Ferdinand, I couldn't stop it. I miss you!

I'm so sorry for all of the farm kids who had this happen. You and "Pie Rat" are not alone. When we are under our parent's care we must eat what they feed us. Ridiculing us or punishing us or forcing us to "eat it all" before leaving the table is just wrong. It isn't your fault that Ferdinand and Franni were killed. Your deep empathy and compassion have saved the lives of countless animals who would have been deliberately bred into existence and needlessly slaughtered. I love cows and like to see happy cows. They always deserve this life, dairy and meat farming are so cruel, they must be banned like egg and poultry farming, wool and fur farming, all industries who make money with animal suffering.
Unfortunately that how businesses are . Pretty sure most people do not like to make animals suffering for a living weather it’s cutting up pigs or shaving sheep’s.
I met farm animals they are the sweetest animals ever and I would especially love a pig. I don’t if a pig would be cut out though for living in an apartment

Moos are very smart, loving, curious creatures with their own individual personalities.
I befriended one on my work route. It started with me just stopping one day and petting him. Then I started bringing him fruits and veggies. Then I bought him a brush and would brush him. Sometimes I would even play guitar for him. He was so awesome. He was like a dinosaur sized dog. I loved him more than any pet I've ever had. And I've had a lot of pets. I even stopped eating beef because of him. He was sold and I don't know what happened to him. But he still fills my heart with love and happiness whenever I think of him.
The Joker movie was my first exposure to Joaquin Phoenix. I was so impressed I started to look into him more. A few months later, I went vegan 💚

My heart is bleeding when I watch this video. I cry out of impotence and shame. What are we doing to those billions of innocent animals, self-aware gentle creatures. Our planet has become a world dominated by death, exploitation, greed, violence, chemical pollution ... Is this what we want to leave our children?
Farmsanctuary, Joaquin and everyone involved: Thank you so much for being the voice for animals. We live in a hard, cruel, abusive world in regards to how we think of and treat animals. Your work is so important for shifting the weight and the focus, to see these animals as sentient beings and treat them thereafter. Our history of how we have domesticated animals and our treatment of them, fills us with shame, regret and sorrow. Lovely to know your mum is involved too. Our age group are usually slower to adjust our thinking to cruelty free, simply because our indoctrination and desensitisation has been over a long period. I had a very similar experience the first time I met a cow on a farm while I was involved in building and financing a recording studio on this farm . The penny dropped when I looked in her eyes and I felt deep remorse and impotence as I was not able to take her out of that situation . I said I was sorry to her and promised I would not hurt her kind again and do what I could for them . I felt her communicate pure love forgiveness and an almost motherly understanding towards me. She left an ever lasting impression . From that moment I stopped eating cows , that was the start of becoming Vegan

😍 Joaquin Phoenix, awesome actor and human being! I've been to 🌺Farm Sanctuary🌺 before and it's such a freeing place! The animals were free to come and go, eat, play, and sleep as they pleased without any constraints. The sanctuary was so calming and orderly, you can't even tell that it's home to *thousands* of animals! ❤
Dad was a city kid who fell in love with a young woman from Iowa. People in areas of agriculture look at animals in a different way. If they are lucky they care for them and, when ready, they slaughter these animals. It is not an easy life. When we would go to the Howard County Fair in Cresco, Iowa and someone would ask, "Where's your dad"? The inevitable answer would be, "He's in the cow barn sketching the cows. A city kid from Brooklyn and Austin, Chicago sketching the cows at the Howard County Fair in Iowa.

My mom grew up in Northeast Iowa. There were small family farms where, yes, animals were slaughtered. It was not the best for the animals but it was a small family farm business. Then came the factory farms in the late '80s and '90s. They bought out the family farms. No one seemed to notice what was happening. Now we are upset about this. It is good that you are rescuing these precious animals but at the same time I can't help thinking, where were all the movie stars when the family farms were being sold off to factory farms?
To the people commenting that they wish there were more people like Joaquin and the Farm Sanctuary people....don't wish for more people like this, BE people like this. Create your own sanctuary. There's tons of people trying to give away free animals on craigslist (livestock animals too) that need homes. Save them. Give money to saving them. Coordinate with people. Protest. Lobby. Call, write, petition....the problem is so massive and with so few people working on it. So every single one of us that cares about this needs to give out 110%! Get started tonight!
Joaquin Phoenix is an outstanding example - showing us all how to bring light and kindness into the world , his compassionate heart is inspiring . There is nothing more important than connecting the facts that how we treat animals is one and the same how we treat each other . Going vegan is the only way to save our planet and stay away from horrific cruelty and suffering .
Oh God I passed one of these livestock trucks today. It always makes me feel wretched. The animals look sad and lifeless.

First off, thank you Mr Phoenix for recuing the cows and sharing it with us. Also a big thanks to the Farmsanctuary. In these days, the way farm animals are treaded and slaughtered it is not ok for me to eat them anymore. I do like meat, but I don't eat it anymore, not do I drink milk. I replaced milk with good nut milks such as almond milk and I replaced Butter with Coconut oil which tast just as good or actually better. I still need to learn more about meet replacements. I don't want to be part of what is going on at these animal plants.

Even cows remember kind souls and the good they’ve done for them.. I’m holding back tears but I can’t. I’ve never seen cow behavior like this.
