  • Who invented Sword & Sorcery? Well, the name, maybe not the concept. Who invented the thieves guild? Who brought a lot of humour into fantasy and has still sadly faded into oblivion with a lot of fantasy readers? Fritz Leiber and his tales of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser are essential reading for anyone who wants to get a better understanding of how we got where we are today in fantasy and this rambly video is trying to give an overview and entry point into this magical series of stories.

Nice intro to Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser! I have only read the Darkhorse Comics made by Mike Mignola, but I have recently acquired "The First Book of Lankhmar", so I am looking forward to read more Fritz Leiber this year.

Thanks! I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It is a very interesting bridge between pulp fantasy of the 30s and what happened in the 60s and 70s before that big fantasy explosion of the 80s and later.

Just watched Ragnarok on Netflix, which made me look at the book Dieties & Demigods and then I saw a reference to Fafhrd and so here I am!

Great video about this classic series. Yeah, the Terry Pratchett influence is so apparent.

I read the first few books as a teen... and completely forgot about them for so many years until a friend brought them up in a discussion of sci fi and fantasy favorites of our youth. First stop was a youtube search and had the pleasure of finding your commentary. So fun to rediscover this treasure... i'll be looking for new copies now. Thank you and cheers!

Thanks for the recommendation. Finally finished some stories. The bleak shore got me some K'chain Che'malle vibes with those lizard demons with sword hands coming out of the black eggs. This clearly shows some inspiration for Steven Erikson.

Fritz Leiber may also be responsible for inventing the catgirl

Have you read The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie, maybe?

Yes, I've read the first trilogy and the three stand-alone novels a while ago. I have not yet started on that second trilogy yet, it is on my tbr list though.

@@modestyblaise3435 It was years ago so I'd need to reread them to have anything meaningful to say about them, something I could definitely see myself do in the nearish future. Don't expect them to be too charitable though, at least not for the first trilogy.
