BFD LS1 C5 checking in. I told my tuner I wanted it to chop. He told me chop is just a fad. Long story short, I'm looking for a new tuner 🫡
😂 chop is necessary for push rod engines that want to live in the high rpm such as roll racing but don’t always necessarily give you power in the lower bands. The chop sound is actually your motor not working efficiently starving in the low rpm at idle. Pains me to say but it’s true. Now if it’s a race car and you don’t give a crap then rock and roll brother. But I think that’s what he meant by fad but really a fad would be like burble pops and crack tunes. That’s a fad, chopping is not a fad it’s a way of life for the push rod gentleman that like to sing in the high rpm and be heard in the low rpm. People put converters in them to make them rev higher of off the line to account for the difference in shit power in the lower rpm but the street can only take so much power anyways so really it is needed. As a tuner he needs to give you what you want and advise you of the negatives. His job to make it work for you. Yes, glad you found a new tuner. That’s some un American crap if I had vet heard it 😂. @@holeshot1721 today yeah for the most part because you can advance and retard the cam but we didn’t always have the ability to do that and still today not all cars do. So not always a tune fixes it. And you can put a big a cam to where it will chop no matter what you do. This is because of mechanical lift and duration being a lot and no way to advance or retard, no amount of tuning will eliminate it fully on these cars. And even then if they do the bigger the cam then the ability to advance and retard you got typically has to be mechanically locked out case in point dodge v8 gen 3 hemi cars. So as you said smoothing it out but you’re not eliminating it. And who wants to smooth it out fully anyways. Yep don’t get that degree change on the fly with a lock out so how are you going to smooth it? Play with timing? And sure that works well for the dohc motors but not the older push rod engines and even the newer ones that decide to max out in on cam and lift deleting their advance and retard features.

My daily commute was 2 miles. So my daily was a 76 Chevy Silverado shortbed, with a "mild" 454, .30 over, flat top pistons, mild cam, iron gm performance heads from 1992, holley intake, and 750 carb,headers.......
My neighbor's hated my b18 swapped Honda, but never said anything about that bitchin thumping big block..... however I did have a fella stop by, and ask me to chill where I would pull out onto the highway. Apparently I had been setting off his alarm every time I went by. As long as I didn't floor it, usually wasn't a problem, however, at wot.....it was pretty loud.
Wiped off a cam lobe and sent shrapnel through the entire engine 3 years ago...... haven't even pulled it apart to see how much it's going to cost to put it back together.
Been debating putting a bone stock 5.3 in it, just to make it move again, but the ignition box and carb intake cost as much as it would cost to put the dang big block together. Guess it's time to sell a kidney.

If you have a dohc vtec k series its already cammed! It just doesnt switch to it until 6000rpm😂 but yes a stock k20 has a v8 sized cam that would chop at idle lol, it would definitely confuse the v8 guys if you lock it but its dangerous for the engine

Your final statement is the reason why i decided to comment lol. I want to finally cam my C7 z06 this winter because i feel like this is the last chance i'll do it. Not because you might be right that ICE could be going away 2030 or at least the modifications of it as EPA rules become more strict, and laws against modified vehicles but because i've had this car for 8 years and while it served me greatly all this time, it's sentimental where i can not sell it just yet. I think camming it is the final stage in the ownership before i do decide to sell it. I just have to experience a cam in this car.

Doooo it! I did a moderate cam when I deleted the AFM in my truck and only needed a mild stall converter. But I also wanted the little extra lift so the supercharger could force a little more air in. Even better is when I forgot to close the cut outs and cold start it early in the morning.

I live in a fairly quiet, family friendly community. We had a neighbor move into the apartment duplex across the street. He owned a current gen 392 Charger, cammed and exhaust. For 1 year, every morning at 5:30am was a glorious wakening for everyone in a 3 block radius. 😂 I think HOA kicked him out.
Daily drove a 14 Camaro SS with a TSP stage 3 cam(video on my page) and i loved it. It was even better after i had 4.10s and a Trutrac installed.

The problem with adding a big cam is that it usually requires many other expensive mods to take full advantage of it. Possibly new performance heads, bigger manifold, throttle body & injectors, headers, a programmer, and a tune. The lumpy cam just might cost you thousands for going down that rabbit hole.
I can attest. Cammed daily’s are freaking awesome.

Haha. I clicked on this expecting a breakdown of the more aggressive the cam, the more frequent you’ll be replacing valve springs, when you should switch to roller rockers, etc. But clearly there’s almost no downside, the chart says so. Guess I need to cam my 02 Z06.

I have yet to see a cam for a 5.7 V8 tundra but you definitely solidified me getting headers!! Might have to add a cutoff valve for the neighbors but we’ll see lol
