Well Done! I just returned from 2 months on The Camino Francis started March 14th in Pomplona. I chose an early date because I cannot stand Kooks on trail and crowds! My Pancho was a total failure. Though my Frog Toggs Pants worked fantastic. I am returning to complete a section from Leon to Sarria April 10th and there WILL! be weather. I will take the weather over Kooks everytime. Great video. I will buy this now. Buen Camino. I may also consider leaving my Lanshan Pro 1 behind but I emphasize my Pro1 withstood some severe hurricane winds several nights when I thought it was going to get destroyed! So anyone reading this buy the Pro1 It was amazing! I highly recommend seam sealing it more than once, I did it 3x and it is very easy.

Cheers Dave. It's a fairly easy fix tbh if you need to have your arms out though.
If I'm going with a poncho style I'll stick with my military P/U coated rip stop nylon poncho which is bigger, not much heavier, can be pitched more ways, costs about the same. I can also hook more than 1 together to get a massive shelter if needed or hiking with someone else.
Added later: Plus, with a woobie my poncho is a light weather sleeping bag that is also a rain cover.
This does double up with another to give an enclosed tent if needed but it's a good option.
@NoviceWildCamper I guess everyone has different needs and ideas but that bit of kit seems to me not to tic the boxes as either a rain kit or a multi pitch shelter. I looked up the info on the website and can't see a lot of options but maybe they didn't list them. For example you said you can hook more than one to make a larger cover, didn't see anything like that on the site. May have missed it. 😕
I have a zelter shelter which is a fun bit of kit and has its uses.
Yeah I wouldn't go camping in it but would definitely use it for walks and temporary shelter 👍

The Gatewood Cape by Six Moon Designs is radically superior and you can couple it wtih the Serenity Net Tent for a double-walled critter-proof shelter that packs into its own pocket (tiny).
It's also 4 x the price and a much more complicated set up. This is just a chuck over your head and go and is lighter and packs smaller. I'm not saying it's better, specially as a shelter as it isn't due to the opening as the gatewood is enclosed but for a quarter of the price it's something you could buy and never use but I'd feel obliged to use the gatewood at £200
@@NoviceWildCamper I don't disagree in general, though you have a couple of things stated which aren't quite true.
The Gatewood Cape isn't any more complicated than what you have, and it's fully enclosed. You can leave the mesh tent attached which makes it even easier to set up if you only want to use it as a shelter. Is it more expensive? Sure. I'm not sure where you see weights, but the Gatewood itself (which is what we'd need to compare apples:apples) is certainly lighter, packs smaller, and is a far better shelter.
Options are good. If anyone was coming here for that sort of a shelter (and your off-the-shelf-surplus military poncho is even better than the OneWind, and likely half the cost) seeing other options might be useful. I sort of stumbled upon the Gatewood via the Lunar Solo, otherwise I'd never have heard of it. Mine lives as an option in my GHB, though I also have a feestanding tent I could select as well (terrain dictates).
According to gatewood it weighs 300g and this is 245g 🤷🏼♂️ and the strap system you have to add to put the inner up is cesibly more complicated than the simple hook that the onewind has. At the end of the day I don't think it's comparable though as it's not a full enclosed shelter like the gatewood and both have their strengths.

Great bit of kit in theory, but after thinking it through and considering how great it is to wear into camp, you'd be wearing it because it's raining so you'd have to take it off and get soaked to set it up as a shelter. Decent waterproofs and a Lanshan would be my choice but thanks for the excellent review
Yeah that's why I call it a shelter, certainly would take it as a tent to camp. This weighs less than waterproofs so could use it as well as your tent though. However if not camping and caught in a downpour and it's in your day pack could be a great option.

I had a snugpak poncho with little T rex length arms. Annoying. I now have a decathlon one which is a bit more streamlined but I need someone to pull it over my pack🤦🏻♂️. Maybe a baggier one like that would be the answer.
Another thing carefull when walking on the tops in a poncho as it can end up like a sail

If you use trekking poles there is a awesome little trick I use. First I put on the hood and sleeves and then pull the back of the poncho over my head to the front so that it basically forms a giant tube in front of me. Then I stick my trekking poles grip first into the poncho and lift them up and back over my backpack. Takes a few tries to get down but now i get it every time.
Another option is to attach the poncho to the back instead of wearing it. You basically put it over the pack like a raincover and gather all the material from the front up to the hood. You can tie this off on the carry loop by the shoulder straps by looping the hood through the carry loop. Now the shoulder steaps should be free to put the pack on and after that you simply pull the poncho on like a pullover. Bonus points for pulling the sleeves through the bottom of your shoulder straps to keep it in place when not wearing the Poncho.
It's actually a decent bit of kit and at that weight, you may as well just leave it in your bag. No good for us 6'+ guys though.
I just use a separate mesh bug head cover on my bivi camps. Better than the bivis with mesh built in as you can get out of your bivi whilst still being protected from the midges
Yeah doesn't feel as claustrophobic either with the head mesh as you hardly notice its there. Cheers for watching 👍
