That's the kind of interaction you want from the landowner. Just checking up on you.
Yeah. I mist admit I've never had anyone approach before on dartmoor so after the recent issues I was wondering how it would go but he seemed a nice chap. I reckon he was checking to make sure i wasn't having a rave in that tent as it looked like a beacon in the night 😂
Don’t be too hard on the landowners. They will be fearing a backlash now from the public thanks to their neighbour’s selfish action. Landowners who’ve never minded the wild campers have been put into a position of mistrust. It will take time for things to settle down again. All in all - it was a nice interaction 👍🏻
Yeah its really just one bad apple spoiling it for the rest and tarring them with his greedy brush. The guy was nice and polite and I reckon just checking I wasn't having a rave up on the tor. The tent did stand out like a sore thumb. It's certainly not stealthy 🤣👍
Most land owners don't mind a hiker spending a night and leaving no trace, it's the idiots that turn up for the weekend or longer leaving massive fire pits and all there rubbish behind that ruin it😞
Exactly. I think that was why he was checking. Don't blame him either. Some right idiots out there 👍
Great video, amazing time lapse and music !
Cheers buddy 👍
Decent landowner!
Yeah he was a nice guy 👌👍
Timelapse B-Roll of the rising is like icing on the cake. I do enjoy watching very much, please keep filming!
Thanks buddy 👌👍
FYI Roos Tor isn't in the Range Danger Area it is just a convenient high Tor to put a warning flag on, the Range Boundary is clearly marked on the OS Map and is several hundred meters away from Roos Tor. BTW the guy on the Quad was just doing his job and would have seen your light in the tent so came to check it out not unreasonable for livestock maintenance after all you could have been a Rustler or anything. I think once he was satisfied you were not up to anything nefarious he was happy to let you be and get on with his work. Someone else said using lights unless it is really dark just means you have no night vision so can't see anything outside the headlight beams, loads of Farmers go without lights up therewhen checking their stock, you need to keep in mind they know these areas like the back og their hands
I’ve never understood the reasoning for earplugs in wild camping. Personally I find listening to the various sounds whether they be weird animal noises or the sound of rain or the wind are part of the experience and I feel bring you closer to nature. Plus if anything untoward was outside I’d like to be aware although I’m sure my dog would alert me. Each to their own I guess
Some people can't sleep well if there's noise and sometimes I don't sleep well if there's too much so I use them occasionally 👍
The farmer up there is a nice chap, he'd never be an issue...unless you meet him when driving...
😂 yeah I'll keep out of his way when he's on that quad bike. He did seem a nice guy, I think he was just checking I wasn't someone who was having a rave in that tent that was like a beacon.
Enjoyed that… really liked the time lapse. Pillow looks good and like the idea of the strap.
Cheers Ash. Yeah the pillow was comfy. I fittted a strap to my vango pillow to keep it attached. Did you miss the word 'on' at the end of that sentence by the way?
@@NoviceWildCamper 😂😂😂😂 you wish
What a legend
Thanks. 👍
Time lapse was stunning! Beautiful spot! I keep a pair of cheap glove liners in my pack for the very reason you experienced. I like the pillow.
Cheets buddy. I normally keep my gloves in my pocket at all times. I'll just stop dog walking 🤣
Or does the dog walk you😉
I wouldn't if I didn't have one, or two 🤣
Hahaha! My dog likes if I have a few! I talk to her more in dog/baby talk....... Oh who's a good girl??? Wanna go for a walky walk?? 😁😁😁😁
I would give anything to sit around the campfire with mate. The stories this dude must have.
Yeah I bet he has 👍
I'm a side sleeper too and have tried all sorts of ear plugs. I found that the Boots brand foam ear plugs you can have in all night without discomfort and are great for blocking out sounds. Best of all they're really cheap, they're like £3 for 3 pairs. Honestly, give them a try.
Cheers buddy. I'll have a look at those 👍
Never found land owners an issue, all about how you talk to them. In the end it is their land, and as long as they see you are respecting their land and not causing any harm or damage, they should be fine. I am sure as long as we keep on top of the odd idiots like our unfriendly Dartmoor hedge fund landowner, who likes to go to court with his Dodgy Totness MP pal backing him up, we will be fine. Just got to let them know, we won't put up with their antics. Liked and Subscribed.
Cheers buddy. That's the issue, those who aren't respectful to the land and I think that's why he came over and checked I wasn't having a rave up on the tor. That thin tent does stand out like a beacon to be fair. 😂
Boots wax ear plugs are awesome - you should try those. They completely block sound
Cheers dave. I'll have a look 👍
Another great video mate👍. What quilt were you using?
Cheers Phil. It's a flames creed quilt. Works really well thorough the winter even though it's not meant for it. 👍
Love the videos mate that's a big old tent thou looks the business what's the tune towards the end off the video sounds good 👍👍👍
Cheers Andrew. Off the top of my head I don't know what the song it. It's from epidemic sounds. I'm out at the momemt hammock camping but if I remember when I get home ill let you know 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper many thanks Andrew 👍👍
It's called gelatin nature by Ooyy 🤷🏼♂️ check epidemic sounds if you have an account
@@NoviceWildCamper thank you 👍👍👍
Those earplugs look interesting. I think I'll check them out. I usually use the Bioears silicone earplugs, but they've recently given me some issues with my ears. So need to try something new.
Btw, are you making anymore of your tables soon? I would like to take one with me on the West Highland Way.
I've been so busy recently I've not had time. I will try and get some done this weekend for the website as I've got the stuff in now. 👍
I really rate the silicone ones for side sleeping, thry work very well for me.
Thank goodness for the castle doctrine is all I'm saying.
Luckily he was pleasant enough 😂 👍
Out checking on the sheep? In the dark with no especial adverse weather? Hmmmmmm……
Yeah was odd. I reckon he was just checking to make sure I wasn't having a rave up on the tor.
Yes I was wondering that I can't see anything out that open door lol and listen to the audio it's absolutely crisp and clear I can't understand how possible to hear the farmer on a quad bike do clearly when it's actually running. It's not April fools day yet lol
@Tony Hobbs Are you insinuating I'm making this up for some ridiculous reason? I would have made it a bit more interesting if I did. And I'm not that good an actor. Ask rialobran as he commented knows the land owner and hes a nice guy. He can verify with him if you really want proof ffs. And he turned the bike off you can clearly hear him start it again.
I just use cotton wool 😂 I’m a coffin dodger I can’t afford that sort of kit £800 he saw you coming😅.
Stay safe on your adventures.
I wouldn't pay £800 for it 🤣
I suppose with the material of the ten being so thin at night it was lit up like a lighthouse.
I use the silicone earplugs, got cheap ones from Amazon that are ok but the Boots own brand ones are much better.
Yeah that's what I thought. Probably thinking I was having a rave up there 🤣 I'm not sold on those earplugs but the second silicon ones were much better. 👍
Nice timelapse - what camera did you use to capture that? Not sure I'd be confident of anything I have lasting long enough on the battery for it - especially in that cold
Thanks Chris. I use the gopro 10 on night lapse. I also attached a 20,000mah battery pack while it's filming as it wouldn't last half an hour tbh. I use the anker and it can be on for 10 hours or more and still have more than half the power left. Just have to hope it's still there when i wake up 🤣👍
@@NoviceWildCamper Ahh. I have an 8. Yet to find decent settings for night time stuff. Guess you plan for a dry night if you're hooking up external batteries.
Yes definitely dry night although you can get a camera charge door with a port now which although not waterproof will help some. The 8 should work too as I had one before and did night lapses. If you search youtube for gopro 8 nightlapse settings there's loads of vids that can help. One it's set then you don't need to do anything but sometimes they come out amazing. 👌👍
Must have been fresh in the tent with it being all mesh.i use the foam earplugs I get at work there not brilliant and often fall out are those gel 1s better than the foam 1s
The second ones I used were fine. More comfy and I reckon better sound insulation than the work ones you get as thsts what I used to use.
Sadly the action of the Darwall’s has lead other landowners on the west side where I live to pull their land from the map too; Kings Tor, Drizzlecombe valley, Pew Tor are all now “out of bounds”. Now for most parts I have to travel or wait for the MOD to stop firing 😢 And it makes me 🤬 that Darwall went to court to ban camping and then said he’d allow it if DNPA paid him. What a selfish, greedy act against DNPA who can’t keep their own staff or offices open.
I just hope that DNPA don’t pay up to these landowners as I’d rather camp elsewhere than see money from them go to wealthy land owners 🤬
Well said. In fact I'd go camp on his land on purpose just to pi$$ him off
Forgetting gear … multiple redundant strategy is my go to option … as long as it isn’t too expensive, I just make rigs up with stuff that stays in it thus I can’t forget it.
I don’t need that many rigs but it’s handy when just pulling things off a shelf (often with a box or two for the paddling customers while I’m waiting) to know what is in there.
X drip … maybe take a few aeropress paper filter rounds which would slow the flow down a decent bit … just a thought. Tbh, I’m sort of ok with the weight of an aeropress and ditch something else instead
The land manager/owner guy … maybe needed something for the cold and thus forgot lights, how to drive etc but then he wasn’t obnoxious or anything so who cares.
Nice to see you out again … braver than I am to be honest, too bloody cold down here just now at about -5 overnight
Cheers Mark. Yeah I normally have my gear all together but recently took the gloves out for dog walks which I usually don't bother. At least it wasn't a life threatening forget 🤣 not sure why there wasn't lights on the actual quad though but at least he was ok. Thought I was in for a barny there but all good. I love a cold camp, just got to habe the right gear. Take it over a wet camp any day 👍
Like how u said its an 800 quid tent and he goes oh alright then and leaves u alone 🤣
Only after nearly driving into it. 🤣
@@NoviceWildCamper maybe that's why he accidentally went the wrong way 🤣
That farmer crazy driving around with no lights very dangerous…lucky you where not ran over …. Or you tile would have been almost killed by a farmer Dartmoor lol
🤣exactly. He nearly did when he got the wrong gear. Would have had to get someone else to edit it though 😂
@@NoviceWildCamper lol funny
That phantom farmer doesn’t seem real to me😂😂😂 did he really just turn up at your editing suite back home? Good tele either way😂😂😂
Yeah OK 🤦♂️
@@NoviceWildCamper did you hire him from Radio 4’s The Archers?🤷♂️
They all sound like that down here 🤣
@@NoviceWildCamper what everyone sounds like they’ve four walls around them? 🤩🤣
What the phantom raspberry blower lol
New subber
Cheers buddy 👍
And he was pleasant to you. Not all bad
Yes he was. I think he was just making sure I was a legit camper and not partying wrecking his land 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper fare enough. If I was a landowner I would too.
I saw the pillow in this video and I’m thinking about getting one, at the moment I use a thin pillow like what’s on my bed lol, it takes up a lot of room in my back pack, the one I seen is £15 would you recommend
I would highly recommend this pillow. Very comfy however I've made it even better with this hack. Best night's sleep I've had camping using this.
ua-cam.com/users/shortsTg858l8j2YM?si=dMucGhlJIe6f3Igj
@@NoviceWildCamper nice one, great idea, thanks!
@@NoviceWildCamper I upgraded a week ago from my £40 vango tent that I bought when I first started Wild camping in 2016, I got the Helm 2 compact for my 50th birthday present, can’t wait to get out in it with that new pillow too
@@stevenvitali7404 good tent that 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper I had a budget and after watching countless videos i decided it was the best tent for that price, it had really good reviews, my old vango had no room to sit up in and had fibreglass poles which broke and a front entrance only, so the Helm will be like heaven
Get the deep sleep silicone earplugs off of Amazon they mould to the inside of your ear last ages I work nights and can’t hear a thing
I used the silicon ones after and they were much better. 👍
Awesome video new sub here
Cheers buddy. Hopefully off to Wales soon for a camp 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper give us a message we would love to join bud
If I go it will be with a group of friends who have organised it so will have to check with them as I'm tagging along. 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper no worries buddy
The audio is very clear for farmer how did you manage that, the camera is further away from him than you unless you had mic on your person even then you're both same clear level of volume theyd be quieter as further away plus how did you hear him over engine noise I can't ever hear them much over engine noise. Very clever however you managed it
I was surprised it came out that well. It was just my rhode wireless mic on my jacket picking him up. 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper wow ok got that mic as well never sounds that good picking up people far wow is it the go 2
@NoviceWildCamper that is a thin cuben shelter almost see through I don't see anything moving and if he was so close to you were his brake lights not working nothing shining in at all maybe no brake lights on a quad that is dangerous. Thank goodness you were OK.
@@Bikepacking no the standard go with 1 mic
@Tony Hobbs I could even see the moon clearly through it yet zero lights on his bike. God knows how he managed it without night vision. Maybe that's what he had 🤷🏼♂️
Well, that was a great camp even if it was a bit cold. I'm glad the land owner didn't run over you. That would have not been fun at all.
Dwayne
😂 true. It wasn't even my tent and was a damn expensive one too 😬 atb 👍
Great Staple Tor is inside the permissive camping zone. He should have left you alone really. Or maybe he was just passing and wanted to say hi.
Yeah I checked first and would always camp inside. I've never been approached before so it was odd for him to come all the way over in the pitch black. Obviously the tent stood out like a sore thumb as its so light coloured and thin so I wasn't as stealthy as normal.
He seemed very friendly 👍
In fairness to the farmer it is his land i would check up on every one my land , and just to be sociable 😆
Totally agree. There's too many idiots out there ruining people's land, getting drunk and starting fires with litter and even tents left behind. I'm positive he was just making sure I wasn't one of those types on his land and I'd do the same. Didn't help that the tent lit up like a lantern with that thin wall! 🤣
What mic did you have on the camera
Was using my rhode wireless go mic on me 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper sound travel good there
@Bikepacking yeah I've noticed when I've done a collaboration if I'm facing the other person it picks then up really without being a directional mic. 👌👍
Hi what quilt are you using enjoy your video thanks 👍
Hi. It's the flames creed quilt. Available on www.outdoorgearessentials.co.uk 👍
Well to be honest he was probably expecting some lily livered pasty bellied camper on his first camp, though despite not having regional politicians on 'sit up and beg' he could assert his get orf moi land rights. He might of even heard that there was a 'novice wild camper' sleeping out, and could send him scuttling back to his corsa. Then he met the nastiest looking dweller of a small nylon nest he ever could wish to meet and probably thought, 'oh bugger, this guy may well eat my leg, so best pretend to be nice'. Seriously though, can't we just be left alone to scratch our balls and listen to the night.
🤣😂🤣😂 true. He may have got even more of a shock if I got out of the tent and stood up. He looked quite small 🤣
@Novice Wild Camper that is what I had hoped that you had just stood up and stood quietly. Overall though despite my rather narrow minded attitude, you handled it well and we're open and friendly. Best way! I had a situation about 4 years ago where fatigue and bad weather forced me to stop and camp on a busy grouse moor. The game keeper was along on his quad in the am to check the bird feeders. He did politely state that was not allowed to camp there. I apologised and said I got caught by the weather in the dark and would be on my way. The whole area though was a vast grouse shooting park. A right mess. This led to my interest and support for the Revive campaign to try and change the monoecosystem of the grouse moor. A landscape that we take as natural beauty is often just an open air breeding pen. Anyway, thanks for the content.
Cheers dave. Admittedly he was nice and just checking to see I was OK apparently but I reckon he was checking to make sure I wasn't up to anything stupid which I totally agree with. He should do and kick those off who aren't acting correctly within the environment. So many still go out and abuse the land and in all the years I've been goibg to dartmoor I've only ever seen one ranger approach me so it's great to see a Landowner checking us out too. 👍
to be fair the land owner sounder lovely. Unlike another tosser landowner on Dartmoor
Yeah he was a nice guy tbh. Apparently he's well known 👍
3rd
No 1 should own free land and beaches it's gods land
Tell that to the government 🤣 such a shame that open access in England has to be stealthy and not enjoyed as much.
how do we know he owns land might just be a farm worker
Possibly but it's normally the farmers that go out at that time checking their livestock. Either way he was an OK bloke 👍
Yay first lol
hmm 'checking sheep' with no lights on.......looking for campers with a thermal camera possibly? and why wait till after dark
Yeah it did seem odd. Never happened to me before after years of camping there but I reckon after the recent issues regarding dartmoor he's probably just making sure I'm a legit camper and not having a party. Odd that he could see in the dark though
Moon was bright enough to see without lights that ruin your night vision :)
so just came across this because YT recommended it, but seems like it's just advertising and non events so will not be back. click bait where it could have actually been interesting and showing that land owners are not all bad.
Well it does show that land owners are not all bad. And if us youtubers don't show new gear how would you know what to buy? What is good and what is useless? Just trying to help but there's always one who'll moan. 🤣🤷🏼♂️
Guy came over doing his job - meets you unexpectedly and was really nice. You give a hard time to 'explain that one away' when he doesn't do a perfectly executed manoeuvre away from your tent. Maybe it's not just the young who feel entitled.
Sorry buddy. I don't really understand that. 🤷🏼♂️
Hmm maybe you need to be less "attitude" with people whos land you are camping on. I normally find a good attitude encourages a good attitude in response.
I didn't have any attitude. Spoke to him politely and he spoke back politely. All was good.
Where was his attitude? He was polite to the farmer and the farmer polite to him. Think you were watching a different video.
The attitude from both parties amicable, just two strong men communicating, as strangers do. Nowt wrong at all with the conversation.
@@NoviceWildCamper Your comment when you heard the land owner, prior to speaking, was "attitude" I refer to. Its all good, enjoy!
I didn't know what was going to happen. Not many people are that gracious. But yes, all good 👍
May my home land Scotland never be subjecated to the tyranny of the English elites🙏🏼 you poor buggers
The twat that's caused all these issues owns a large section of land in Scotland. He now charges people there to pan for virtually non existent gold in his rivers. Multi billionaire and does pathetic things like that. Sad. But yes, we are petitioning for the same rights in England at the moment. Got to nearly 40k signatures but need 100k to get it considered by parliament. 🙄
duvall owns land there too.. charges ppl to pan for gold , but yh from a wild camping perspective you got it made up there mate
