I watch these videos because I love the UNSC warships from Halo. But also for the swearing. "Take that to the bank and shit on it!" and "Go piss on a cactus!" are truly noteworthy phrases.
I love the "we are the giants now" clip, at the end, before I didn't know those were actually not Halcyons, and were Autumn class, and I love at the start the closest Autumn class is "Song of the East" you can see it written on the side!
The usage of carriers may have been good against near-peer enemies as you could swarm them with your fighters squadrons, but the Covenant heavy shields made many of their ships untouchable against the UNSC fighters weaponry.
I do agree the fighters should have been kept for fleet defence and scouting except on nuclear attack runs, though given how outclassed the unsc was in space I wonder if swarming corvettes was a plan to remove any firepower they could but that sounds wasteful given corvettes are typically designed to counter such swarms.
I'm more surprised that they haven't just fire at the covenant ship thrusters, giving UNSC some time to reload another MAC shot.
@@Gotnothingatall because covenant shielding and structural durability was pretty good so it's not as easy as it sounds. Coupled with most common covenant ship weapons having a pretty good firing arc means you aren't getting into a dead spot easily, to say nothing of overlapping ships and other fleet support.
I always called the epoch class as the epoch class. I never heard anyone call it the epic class because if you were to break the name out into sylables it wouldn't sound like epic. Anyways

I think I heard my very southern geology teacher back in high school say "Epic". But as an American I can say I don't say it like that.
American here, Texan ontop of it. Maybe I'm abit more well read then the next guy, but I have always viewed the two words as two separate and distinct words. They are spelled different, with two very different phoenic pronounciations. Epic bares more of a context of 'greatness/very/extremely' in modern language and a base in originating from the epic poetry of ancient mythology. Epoch, in my mind has always been in reference to vast periods of time in the ancient past. Like I said, two very different words. Anyone saying Epoch as Epic in my mind is lazy and well, just being careless.
I like that all UNSC Super Carriers seem closer to a battle carriers than what I'd imagine a Super Carrier to be. Instead of a massive, thinly armoured and armed brick made for carrying as many space craft as possible they have massive guns like the Series MAC's and Breakwaters, an ungodly amount of missiles, and enough armour to ram a small moon and win. Its nicely unique as in most settings Carriers are weak and defenceless hulks that are defensless once seperated from their fleet.
The Punic is so underrepresented in Halo (the games) This class represented humanity at its best pre war although like all of the UNSC in terms of equipment and weapons the Punic is woefully equipped for the 24th-26th Century but still held its own. I wouldn't mind seeing a few prequel games or dlc dealing with the Insurrectionist wars that was fought with "Spartan" 1's and other factions being the protagonists, to include a Punic Strike Group. In an idea world a crossover game featuring Halo Section 8 Starship Troopers (Invasion Universe) AVP Mass Effect Anthem COD: Infinite Warfare Star Craft Fall Out Gears of War,whew! Talking about a lot,lol did I miss any 😅
Honestly I love this class of ship, probably evident by the several comments I left about it (if that was annoying I apologize by the way). I simply adore the idea of a ship just plain big enough to slug it out with Covenant Capital Ships. Their scarcity and cost obviously were not sustainable during the war but Post-War I hope they made a similar class of ship like you mentioned...or maybe just gave the Punic Class a technological facelift and started producing them again. A smaller, cheaper, and still deadly pseudo Infinity with a long history (which i pray they expand on) is a neat idea.

For the Trafalgar it was destroyed by the first covenant flagship encountered by humanity. They meant it in the way that it was the first ship made to be a flagship, its a special ship, not a general one like a CSS, CAS or CPV.
That ship was a supercruiser, what Sins of the prophets represented as the DOS class.
It is equiped with a very long range plasma lance. It is the only ship that can outrange the ODP super mac.

Funny enough at certain points we debated making the DOS a titan for the mod because by its canon it's a pretty devastating large ship unlike the battleship which is only 2 kilometers but loaded with weapons.
If you want to think about a covenant "flagship" as not just a CAS being the flagship of a fleet but a ship that's a super capital and essentially unique and overwhelmingly powerful then it fits.
Despite "only" being 3.6 km long, less than the CAS and otger carriers, it had 12 high powered plasma lances, that could cut a 10 m wide hole through a ship at a range of 100,000 km

Just to be clear the two spinal macs on this carrier are super macs as in the orbital defense platform macs in halo 2 that can one shot even CAS class assault carriers fully shielded so the fact it could go toe to toe with most covenant ships Isn’t surprising
Where'd you get the idea that super MACs can one shot CAS carriers? There were only two OAS carriers in Regret's fleet and they both made it past the defense network despite being the largest targets there. One was even body shielding the other one and only notably had its shields depleted.
The super MACs are credited with being able to one shot _most_ covenant vessels, not all.
The OAS class is a fannon design and even if it was cannon I did say CAS class sergeant Johnson says quote “ that Mac gun can put a round clean through a covenant capital ship” this could many anything from fully shielded CAS carrier, CCS cruiser, or CPV destroyer. Do keep in mind that super macs shoot 3000 ton shells at 4% the speed of light or 12,000 kilometers a second that is roughly equal to 51 gigatons of kinetic energy every shot and there were 300 super Macs around earth the only reason regrets fleet made it to the surface at all OAS class or not was plot armor and convenience
@@ethanbussen8506 what's said and what's shown are wildly different. No, they wouldn't have survived long in the kill zone. But both carriers made it through by making a run for it despite smart AIs gunning them down.
The CCS class battlecruiser has comparable dimensions to the Valiant super-heavy cruiser, being thinner and less massive. Those CAS carriers are much more massive targets and there's no way in hell those human AI are missing the mark. So why aren't they scrap by the time they're passing Cairo?
I have theorized in the past but I have no proof that regret used his position as one of the high prophets to get access to the most advanced forerunner technology the covenant had access too and used it to supe up his carriers and the rest of his fleet which is how they survived the onslaught which means they were not normal covenant ships which the odps would have no problems with of course this is just my fan theory for this part of halo lore
@@ethanbussen8506 So the reason why the the 2 carriers did not get one shotted is simply because they stayed out of the Kill zone that Cortana mentions in the beginning of the clip in halo 2 and used the other 11 covey ships as well as fighters/boarding crafts to weaken the Earths defenses. Even though Earth had 300 ODP's in orbit; Regret's Fleet only had to deal with a small portion of it they are also most likely take evasive actions so as to not a take Super Mac round center mass. Once they had weaken that section of the Defense perimeter and the battle was favoring the UNSC; both CAS Carriers went full speed towards Earth with one providing itself as a shield to Regret Carrier. Also don't forget that there is a pitched battle taking place while they are making a break for earth with now limited ODP's capable of one shooting them in that area. Both Ships take damage while breaking through with chief Tasking one out himself in cool but not realistic manner for space combat.
I've got a video where i've got a 3D printed fleet built around a Punic class, all to scale, and folks, this ship is really big... You rarely see all these big ships next to the small ones to get a good sense of scale. The Punic's main engine cone is about the length of a frigate, and the supercarrier so much bulkier and taller than even most cruisers

Series may refer to Ship Mounted SMACs, which only the Infinity, Vindication, and Punic possessed.

Id like the idea of the post war punic will be like a smaller infinity. Even making it carry couple of frigates or even a few destroyers instead. Same with post war phoenix-class, those looke like they can dock a few frigates or even crusers
i like to think the Punic herself, that being the ship, was most likely kept near earth as a "just in case" thing. allowing her to survive till the very end of the war.
Seriously human engineers in Halo are the absolute goat to evolve technology that goddamn fast and apply it to ships and such, with scientists giving understanding of these tech so we can apply it.
IRL I can see how humans if we found foreign advanced technology, we'd all jump aboard to study it and learn as much as possible from it, rapidly evolving our tech and improving technical fields at an outrageous pace.
For anyone that has doubts for if us humans are fast on the technological development side, a few historical facts:
The first rocket NASA launched was in 1958. Sputnik, the first orbiting device to transmit data back to Earth, was launched in 1957. We are in 2023, this stuff was *66 years ago, yes 66.* Now we can predict radiation events and mitigate their effects on hardware, simulate thermal and structural behavior, and so much more.
A few noteworthy achievements:
-We can send probes to other planets or the fukin Sun (still $$$ tho).
-Track debris, centimeters in size, in orbit around Earth.
-Safely delegate manned LEO transport to the private sector.
-Keep operating a crewed orbiting laboratory since 2000.
-On my side, I can confirm we are doing the robotic arm for the lunar orbital station Gateway. ITS HAPPENING.
Going back to the surface of the Moon will still take a while, that's what I'm seeing with the call for lunar landers by NASA. But still, an orbiting station will take us wayyy closer to that :D
I have also loved the punic class it was like a legendary ship that should be in the lore more.
If you get around to it maybe consider taking a look at RDM Battlestar Galactica ships

Love your videos. My only issue with the punic is that humanity had such a large vessel before the war with the covenant. Adding to that it was a CMA vessel because they were supposed to be underfunded. I do like the vessel but my point is that it takes away from the infinity's scale. Still would love more mentions in the lore about them and even an in-game appearance

Do Baldur's gate video's man. I'm balls deep myself right now and it's so hard to find playthroughs. Largely because it seems to be impossible to have the same playthrough and most folk have only just got into act 3. A lot of content there mate.
As someone that grew up with Buldur's Gate 1, 2 and Shadows of Amn this game finally does the series justice. It's worth covering man.

What's interesting is that? The putics were used by the CMA as well as the UNSC (Colonial Military Administration, basically the Coast Guard as they were a second less well funded navy meant to patrol all the outer colonies) just imagine if your Coast Guard had supercarriers....

Like a lot of updates to come out of the 22' Encyclopedia, I find myself at odds with the stated weaponry of the Punic. The incorpation of Fortess and Scythe point defense guns is in bad taste considering that these weapons were supposedly introduced from Infinity onwards (2553-Present). Retroactively incorperating them into a decades old ship makes it look like the UNSC was cutting corners on Infinity's design and build. Not to mention the addition of the over-powered Howler missiles to the Punic. The Howlers make more sense as a wartime or postwar development to defeat Covenant shielding or point-defense, not a pre-war assembly that is capable of downing a Covenant destroyer with *only* 100 missiles. If that's the logic we're going with, why wasn't the UNSC deploying the Howlers on every ship that could carry them? It doesn't make sense why someone at 343 decided to adapt postwar weaponry onto a prewar design.
Just a quick note here, I'm not ranting about the quality of your videos Mark. They are quite good and I'm glad someone in the community is covering the lore behind the fleets featured in Halo. Basically, I'm just ranting about some the lore entries for the series made by 343. Some of them seem inane, or slapped into the lore without any finesse. Just wanted to clear it up if my comment ranting was sending some sort of negative impression towards your videos.

That is indeed the Eion class in SotP. We do know that its 2900 meters long, a crew of 2100, and has at least 1 MAC, 300 Archer missiles, 2 Fusion rockets, and carries pelicans, longswords, and SOEIVs. That's pretty much all we know, though.
Question - does anyone here remember, in Halo custom edition, there were many modders who built Prowler class hips on RPG Beta maps? Any idea of what resulted in the lore change from them being smaller Autumn Class/Marathon ships to the weirdly sickle cell shaped one we see in Halo 5?
Great video! The Punic was always great for being able to stand up to covenant ships before the integration of covenant and forerunner tech, i personally believe that each of its two MACs are around the strength of a ODP MAC. Good luck with the infinity breakdown man.

When we hear "Covenant Flagship", I think we're assuming that it's a CAS given that's the most common flagship type, but you know what else is considered a Covenant Flagship? The CSO! As such, and given how rarely the UNSC encountered them, I have taken to believing that UNSC Trafalgar was destroyed not by a CAS, but by the single known CSO known to have been above Reach, The Long Night of Solace. The wording of the reference book would make 10 times more sense if Trafalgar met its end courtesy of the Solace rather than one of the many thousands of CAS Carriers in the Covenant fleet.
I love Punic Class, I'm planning to write a crossover fanfic involving, Halo, Mass effect, 40k, Warframe, Destiny, Star wars etc.
A Punic class is one of the main Halo ships in the story alongside the Infinity and Spirit of Fire, the UNSC Waterloo a Punic Class that survived the Human Covenant war and names after the Battle of Waterloo.

@@gono4806 planning to post it on Fanfiction but it's gonna take some time plan out because there are alot of characters and factions from different franchises I might add a few more like Crysis, Metroid, Starcraft, Aliens/Xenomorphs.
The most obvious characters are Master Chief and Commander Shepard (defaut Red hair Femshep) one of my OC is a Primaris Ultramarine named Darius.
Plus I'm also doing my Godzilla crossover fic too.

I'm sure others have already said it in this comment, but yes they are 2 very different words. Epic, meaning long narrative of legendary or hero acts. Epoch, meaning a particular period of time or history. But then again Americans simply aren't that good at grasping the depths of the English language
